Professional Fitness is a company that is headquartered in Raleigh but they contract with Gold's Gym. Recently I signed up for a membership with Gold's Gym and also signed up for a trainer with Professional Fitness. In the contract with Professional Fitness it says that due to medical issues I can cancel. Unfortunately working with the trainer increased my asthma attacks and I was using my inhaler more and more. The customer service rep told me that with a letter from my doctor I could cancel the contract. I got the letter and sent it to them only to be told they lost it. I sent it twice after that -- return receipt requested -- both times they lost the letter along with the check for $100 which they requested to bring the contract current and then cancel it.
I then finally was able to speak to a woman by the name of Tiffany who explained to me that my illness was not serious enough to warrant a cancelation. No where on their contract is a list of serious illnesses. So now this supervisor was playing doctor. I have tried the to get this contract canceled for months but to no avail. You can very rarely talk to someone there they transfer you when you ask for the cancelation department which gives you a voice mail.

fraudulant charges
I signed up for a free trial for golds gym. I canceled the membership within the time period because my husband was leaving for iraq and I was going back to WI. They kept taking money out of my account and I actually had to cancel my creidit card so they coudn't steal more money from me. Everytime I would call them I would either gat a ansewing machine or they would transfer me from one person to another where no one knew anything.

never cancelled membership!
Signed up for membership in 2003. Moved a couple months later to a city that didn' t have a Golds anywhere near it. I was told to fax proof that the nearest gym was over 30 miles away and they would let me cancel my membership that was being charged to my credit card. I did fax proof and they told me my memb. was cancelled after being so rude. My card was not being charged any longer. THEN... 3 years later I got a collection notice for back payment of $400 and on my credit report! I still have the same credit card used then and they never tried to charge it or send any letter notifying me of any wrong doing! They did this to a friend of mine as well. Horrible company! I'm with 24 hr. and have not had any problems.

Feb 2014 I am having a similar experience with golds gym. Pressured into signing a contract . I moved to Calgary and all but one golds had been sold to another fitness club. They would not let me out of contract I rode out contract which has no auto Renew written on it as requested at time of signing. After the 26 payments as agreed payments have increases and are still being withdrawn. I am seeking legal action against golds. And will be making public all information discovered about golds including the fact the contract cancellation is handled by a third party in the states. Golds gym is the pinnacle if corrupt contracts.

I am appalled with the service I have received from Gold's. Our contract had expired and yet they still were charging us when we weren't even using the gym anymore. When I inquired about the charges I was told you had to give 30 days notice. This is on ONE of the contracts we signed, yet absent on another part of the contract. AND the amount we were paying INCREASED and no where on our contracts was this new price included.
My advice to people looking to join a gym is to forget about Gold's. They will entice you with all their equipment but we found it was always busy, and in general, not worth what they charge you. And what's more, they will charge you even though your contract has expired.

I have had the exact same experience as the posted comment. My contract ended 2 years ago yet I'm suddenly getting charged again monthly. Also when signing up for the contract I was under the understanding that it was only a one year contract, the sales representative assured me this was all it would be. Well after the year was over I continued to get charged, upon inquiry they said that I had actually signed up for a two year contract. The sales representative completely lied to me in order to make more on his sale. I am completely appalled by Gold's Gym and dissuade everyone to join.
Just because you sign a contract for one year does not mean your services should end after one year. The contract you signed with golds gym is for an agreement stating that you will pay a certain $ amount for a certain period of time. After that period of time is up, the rate ($) is subject to change. If you were a satisfied, active member at the gym and they cancelled your gym services after your contract was up, how would you feel? I guess you never thought about that because you are one of those lazy people who didn't really use the gym and couldn't wait for the day your contract end date was to give you more excuse.
jeremy's comment i agreed 100%. i sign a 12 month contract in march with getting a month free plus i freeze it for dece 2 months. next min i know i had a letter send to me for £135 in may. which my contract expired end of feb. no free month plus they gave me alot of ### on the phone. if i don't pay them i will be put on a list of bad credit. when i want and see them they gave more ### and another story. i join many gym never one like this.

They will try to get away with just about anything. My experience with Gold's has left me incredulous as to how they stay in business when they do some of these things. Their customer service is virtually non-existent, and their sales tstaff will tell you bold faced lies to suck you into a contract which is nearly impossible to break. I am normally not someone who complains about bad experiences with a business, but this is just absurd. My advice to anyone considering Gold's is to realize that there are many gyms in every city in North America where you will never experience these issues.
They are known far and wide for this. The only suggestion I can make to prospective members is do your homework. Check the Better Business Bureau reviews, check web postings, talk to people, and see if you uncover anything that concerns you. And if you do get screwed over, know this: the contract is NOT their only obligation. There are laws in every state/province/terrirory that govern market transactions, KNOW YOUR RIGHTS AS THEY PERTAIN TO THESE LAWS. Every promise they make to you, oral or written, is subject to these laws.

I was a member of Gold's Gym in Fort Lauderdale, but once my membership was up I joined Mainstreet Gym in Wilton Manors. Mainstreet closed overnight, with NO prior notice. I choose Mainstreet because it was within walking distance of my home; I got exercise and was saving gas. I didn't even hear that Mainstreet had closed until a friend who also was a member informed me. Only a few weeks ago, I looked in my bank account and saw there charges from Golds Gym. I can't get satisfaction from the gym manager or franchise owner...even the corporate office. What do we do?

I was a member of Golds gym Fort Lauderdale for almost 8 years. When the ownership changed so did their attitude on the gays. Last year when I went to renew. They said my renewal rate would be 650 dollar. I asked why, from the sales manager and they said we are getting new equipment. Well they were presently selling new and renewals at 450 for many other members at this time. After questioning the management several times they said that, "We have had complaints from members that you have been staring at them". I left. I train now at Ballys and joining a new gym this week. I talked with other members that were training at Golds and now at Ballys and find out that they have been "discriminated" in some form or another for being gay. Their attitude has been deceitful and unfair. I would not recommend them to anyone.

I went into a gold's gym with my sister and we both opted for the "$1" initial payment on the one-year contract. After a few visits, I got over the whole thing, but continued to pay my monthly dues because I signed a contract for a year and wanted to do the right thing. A few months before the end of the year I relocated from illinois to new york. Still in keeping with honoring my end of the contract, I payed every month until the end of the term, even calculating the amount of money to leave in my old account when I started local accounts so that I could cover it.
The end of the contract came and I closed the account thinking all was well. Two months later, I get a collection notice from the old bank saying that gold's had attempted two more payments and that I owed them almost two hundred dollars in attempted transactions and overdraft fees. I called the bank to explain the situation. They said they were sorry for the confusion, but they were still holding me responsible for the "overdue amount". Whatever - I paid it to get it over with.
I contacted gold's to find out why they were still trying to collect on an expired contract, explaining that I now lived five states away and I had ensured that the twelve month contract was satisfied. They told me that somewhere in the contract is an assumptive clause that presumes a continued month-to-month extension of the contract until some paperwork is submitted officially ending the contract. I again explained that I was living in an entirely different region of the country, and the guy on the phone said "no problem. Just send a fax to our member services supervisor stating that you've moved along with proof of new address, and we'll accept that in lieu of an in-person cancellation." so that's what I did.
I didn't hear anything more on the issue until eight weeks later when I got another letter from the old bank saying that I now owed them almost five hundred dollars, and that I had been "blacklisted" for failure to pay. Again the phone calls. I tell bank that I don't have the money they want this time around, so they're just going to have to go after gold's for continuing to seek payments they are no longer owed. When I called gold's to ask what was going on, they told me that my cancellation fax was invalid since I did not remit payment in full for the amount they said I owed them. Fighting back the urge to let fly with both barrels on the associate, I suggested resubmitting the fax along with an agreement to make monthly payments. I was told that the best I could hope for was sending at least half of the payment, and continuing to be charged monthly dues along with the balance until I got the whole thing paid off and then re-sending the fax. No ifs, ands, or buts. Then I did lose it. I told the guy no dice; that I thought this behavior was scandalous and considered the company he worked for just another federally-licensed group of pirates and thieves.
So now, I can't get any new accounts, and I have collection agencies coming after me for both the bank and gold's... A grand total of almost a thousand dollars.
I am having the same issue with Golds Gym. I will be reaching out to the attorney general to get help. I suggest you do the same. Thanks!
I had almost the same exact thing happen to me except it was four years before collections called me to tell me that I had a bill. I tried to cancel my membership doing everything they told me to do to cancel and four years later after I thought it was canceled I get a notice form collections! What am I supposed to do now?

In June 2006 I had made a call to Golden Gym stating that I would be moving out of the city and inquired if I could cancel my contract. I was advised that if I mailed in proof of re-location that I could cancel my contract free of charge. All was sent- I was under the impression that the cancellation took place in June 2006.
I received a call in 2007 from ABC financial advising that I had an unpaid balance due to Golden Gym. At this time, I contacted the manager of Golden Gym and advised of the situation. I was advised to re-fax my proof of relocation and the situation would be taken off of my account.
On 7-10-08 I received another call from Vision Financial advising that legal action was being taken against me because I have an unpaid balance to Pure Fitness for $240. I do not feel that this is fair treatment to the consumer nor should I be responsible for making these payments as I have not been to this location in over 2 years and have cancelled twice. I feel that now I am being harassed by this collection agency when I should not be since I made the proper steps to cancel on more than one occasion; I have also not utilized any services at this gym prior to June 2006.

I was excited when I was living with roommates and we all decided to join a gym together. Strength in numbers, you know.
We went in to a Gold's Gym and told the man (let's call him "Brady") that we were thinking about joining. He got excited. You know they get paid for commission. Almost like a cartoon, his pupils turned to green dollar bill signs... $^$
There were so many papers and he rushed them by all of us. We were reluctant to join because to get the deal we wanted, we had to join for 2 years.
Us: Well we are just roommates and won't be living together for that long. Perhaps we shouldn't join.
Brady: That will be fine. I'll sign this paper saying that upon termination, your cancellation fee will be $0 when one of you ladies decides to move out.
Well, as predicted, our rental lease ended, and we all headed our different ways. I had forgotten about the gym membership until the auto-withdrawal hit my bank account.
I called to cancel.
Golds Gym: Well we are sorry, but you can't just cancel like that. In the contract it states (*in very fine writing I might add*) that you have to move at least 25 miles away from the nearest Golds Gym.
Me: You're kidding. Brady never told us anything about us. In fact, the opposite. He told us that for sure once we left we could cancel.
Golds Gym: Well I'm sorry if someone told you something. I wasn't there. You signed the contract.
Fine.
My old roommate and I decided that she would make a "rental agreement" for her parents house (at least 25 miles away from the nearest Gold's!) to cancel the membership.
So today I called Gold's Gym just to get an update on the situation...
Me: My old roommate is working on faxing me her new lease agreement to void out the contract.
Golds Lady: "Well that doesn't matter. The only one that can cancel the contract is you, since you are the one that the contract is under. You have to be the one that moves over 25 miles away from the nearest gold's gym."
Me: "Well that's not what I was told when I signed it. In fact, I was told the opposite. Brady understood that we were all going to be staying around, just not living together in the future, and proceeded to sign us up for this contract."
Lady: "Well, I can't do anything about what anybody TOLD you. You signed the contract, and that's what it says. You're obligated to abide by it".
Me: "You know what. Just forget it. How much does it cost to just cancel the membership all together?"
Lady: "You can't".
Me: Pardon? I believe I can. How much does it cost?
Lady: No. You cannot cancel a contract. You may only transfer it to someone else's name. But there is no cancelling. Period.
Me: You've got to be kidding me.
Lady: No.
Me: Well I can't accept this. There's got to be something we can do.
Lady: no.
Me: I don't believe you. I need to be transferred to someone else.
Lady: Ok.
Proceeds to transfer me to someone else that doesn't answer, and I have to leave a voicemail.
No one called back.
I call again 6 hours later and talk to a different girl (surprise, surprise). I tell her I've looked over the contract I sign, and I see where it says that a member has to move 25 miles away for the contract to be void. However, it doesn’t say ANYWHERE that it has to be the "Primary" member. Just member.
More arguing continues.
ME: Does this seem like good customer service to you? I mean, do you think I'm going to come away feeling treated with respect? Do you think I for one second would recommend this gym to ANYONE?
Lady: (no answer)
Me: I mean, honestly, how many argumentative conversations like this do you have a day?
Lady: I'm not sure.
Me: Ok. Never mind. So if I'm going to stay with my sister in Oregon this summer for a few days, can I have her write up a lease agreement for me to sign, and cancel the membership?
Lady: If it's 25 miles away, and if it's official-looking.
Me: Official-LOOKING?
Lady: Yes.

Bottom-line: After having the time to read the contract OVER and OVER, it says in at least 2 different places that "No oral promises or statements are part of this contract".
Translation: We will tell you whatever we feel like to get you to join and don't have to honour it.

Gold's Gym, Malden MA. It appears just like all other Gold's Gyms this one is in on the "contract" scam. We were given a very long talk by the Gold's Gym "operative" who told us that we would be able to cancel, and we stupidly signed a contract. Now, as we can't stand the Gym with all it's noise and posers we can't get out of the contract. So are we going to end up paying the full 24 months!?! I joined golds gym and signed a 1 year contract for $40 a month. I paid up to 10 months and called telling them i moved and the lady said that i just have two payments left. I said ok i'll pay the $80 since i did sign the contract. My contract was up and they billed me yet again the next month. I called and asked why and they said I have to give a thirty day written notice so i did. I then call billing and 20 days later and they said they had no request for my cancellation. I called up my gym and they said billing doesn't take care of it but a company out of state does. I call billing back and they said that they didn't know there was an out of state headquarters. My last draft date is December 1st. Once I am billed I will change my debit card number. If they have the audacity to seNd me a bill in the mail and a have my cancellation contract i will take them to court. IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT JOINING GOLDS GYM JUST RUN HOME, ITS FREE ANYWAY. THIS GOLDS GYM IS IN THE INNER CITY AND THERE ARE JUST TOO MANY BLACK PEOPLE. health club membership dues/contracts
Golds Gym bills additional months of dues prior to joining and after your resignation: I paid 1st and last months dues on joining the club prior to using a treadmill. I have been billed two months after my resignation as the company stated I must give 60 days notice of resignation. That is 4 months of dues or $189.72 paid to Golds prior to and after I resigned my membership.

I joined tis gym mainly for the free day care and they claimed they would freeze my membership fees while I was deployed. First mistake is they lied about the savings and they are just like a car dealer ship when it comes to gouging peoples pocket. Second they only froze the member ship for a year which, in a perfect world would have been fine but its not perfect and I am in the Army and as my orders stated when I got the account frozen 12- 15 months or completion of mission. So when i got the word i would be extended i called them up. They told me they needed proof that I would be gone longer um ok, there is this small thing called OPSEC and unfortunately I cant get the dates because of it and they already had proof called deployment orders. The biggest thing I don't understand is while the account is frozen I couldn't use any facilities anyways so its not like i would be able to lie and then get free months and when it is unfrozen i have the remainder of my contract so when They said they wouldn't well the lost my business and more.
If you want to get your moneys worth out of a gym don't let the big name fool you they only want your money and half there trainers are fat idiots anyways
My experience with Gold's gym in Dagenham isn't by far better than the lots I have been reading from.
I joined Gold's gym Dagenham(Mistake) in September 2015 for one year, in January 2017, I decided I had enough, bad service, breaking down facilities, failing equipment and, when I complained, I FELT LUCKY TO GET REPLY AFTER A WHILE, all it had is some apology and bla bla bla.
when I decided to leave then they had to remind me of their t's and c's which are [censored] as far as I as concerned. for Gold's gym, t's and c's only apply to customers, not to them providing a service and charging substantial amount of money for it. I also got letter from CRS, but to hell, when it goes to court then and only then we can talk. Thank God I have a good solicitor.

This is perhaps the most ridiculous gym ever. They dont put soap in the bathrooms, they say it is because "the health department forbids it." The gym is filthy, the staff is rude, and the manager, Mark Seagreaves, is an idiot. I dont know how he keeps his job. Clearly the owners do not care. The water fountain, they have only one, has been broken for 4 years, which, coincidently is how long they have been open. "The parts are on backorder" is the standard line. My advice is to avoid this place, if you do have any complaints, dont bother telling the manager, because he does not give a damn, and he will let you know that rather bluntly.

They do not pay any attention and keep on advising to go for personal traing consultants. They sometimes make fun of us, which is really not acceptable. I should have gone to other normal gyms because I think their services would have been much better than yours.
I therefore request you to please talk to your branch head in Surat and take some actions about this and redress my problem as soon as possible. Also please ensure that such problems never occur with any of your clients as it results in a poor image of your gym in the city..

Golds Gym are quite frankly the most disgraceful example of how to run a buisiness. I was a member for 6 months and was promised two free months in the joining package. When my six months were up no free months big surprise so I asked them what happened. They said you have to write a letter so I wrote a letter. Next month no free months big surprise. They said you have to write a letter one month in advance. So by this time ive paid for two extra months
Anyway I start my free months and hand in my letter saying i wish to leave the gym. I then moved away from the area for a new job. One year later CRS contact me saying I owe £450 in gym fees.
I disputed this over and over and as it turned out the actual fee was £45 and CRS decided they could justify a 1000% increase.
I negotiated it down because i couldnt risk a court appearance.
What pisses me off is that at any point I was a phone call away .
Golds gym had my number but knew they would make more by not telling me and letting the debt roll on.
Heres my favorite bit. After threatening be with debt collection and a court summons Golds Gym continue to phone me onece every two weeks to offer me exiting new membership packages. Luckly it lets me indulge my love of using the C word on the phone.

I had that exact same experence with Gold's Gym Dagenham. They never contacted me about any outstanding amount from the cancellation and passed it on to CRS debt collectors who I now have to pay an additional £50 fee! How can Ibe made to pay for an outstanding amount that I was never told about?

I agree with you dont let the big name full you, Golds Gym are only after your money they will do whatever they can to get you tied up to a contract, once youre tied up theres no getting out. As i have experienced with Golds Gym in Dagenham, Essex. I signed up to a 6 months contract, used 3 months and then froze the membership for further 3 months - as cause of exam revisions. Just before the 6 moths was over i gave them i call to give them notice to cancel, they said no problem and as far as i was concerned my account was cancelled, no contact thereafter. Now this is where it gets interesting, they get in touch with me 6 moths later after my cancellation request, and guess who the letter came from CRS>some debt collectors £102 (£52 golds gym - £50 CRS's charge) £52 FINE for not complying with there membership cancellation procedure, wait a minute where you (Gold Gym) not suppose to tell me if there was anyting that i had to pay or any form that i had to complete prior to my notice. I recieved absouloutly no phone call or letter from GOLDS GYM to tell me that i owed them some money, what they decided to do is send it to a third party debt collection people (CRS) to retrive the money they slammed on their fees £50. Shouldent they have called me to let me know of the situation rather than get in touch with a third party 6 months later with added fees. CRAZY- and guss what the fees dont even make sence, as far as iam concerned i own them zilch. i dont want to go on any more you get the concept, they are conning us out of our pockets, they think people are fools when they are the ones who really are the ###s, they dont know who to dial numbers or type up letters, they send to third party- maybe they think we can make some money and you (CRS) can also, so lets work together and rip people off. I would reccomend people to get the cancellation procedure cleared out well before they sign the dotted lines. WOULDENT RECOMMEND GOLDS GYM TO ANYONE, SERVICE IS GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS!

The Gold's gym in Spanish Fork, UT and Provo, UT have bullies for some of their employees as well as many incredibly rude gym members! I have a slight facial defect that I cannot do anything about and because of this I have been ridiculed, called ugly, dog, etc. ad nauseum... numerous times by the vain and mannerless people who are at thess gyms. I have complained to the supervisors at both gyms but nothing seems to change. What ever happened to civility, and living by the Golden Rule? Sorry people even if you are "beautiful" on the outside if your ugly in the way you treat others you are just a plain unattractive human being.
The only thing you have to do to get your money back is go the other route call your credit card company and dispute the payment and they will take the money out of their account and all you have to do is listen to the person on the dispute dept. of your credit card. Ask them what procedure you should follow.
I had a similar problem, where, besides charging $500 for cancelling (which is in the contract), they kept the $650 deposit I gave, wanting to keep a total of $1, 150. My suggestion: IF YOU THINK YOU ARE BEING RIPPED OFF, YOU CAN FILE A CLAIM TRHOUGH THIS WEBSITE: http://www.ncdoj.gov/Consumer/2-2-12-File-a-Complaint.aspx My understanding is that many people are being affected by them, so there is no point in wasting your time leaving messages or asking to talk to a manager (THERE IS NEVER ONE!). So file complaints to get these people in the right place!
They work with Peak and Gold's. I think we should organize and have a riot out front on six forks road! I just want my money back! I do not need all of the aggravation and running around...it's my money and they owe me!
I also agree! I signed up with Peak Fitness in August of 2008. I signed up with a trainer in the beginning of July. They told me I received 3 free consultations with a trainer when I signed up at Peak. Well a trainer from Professional Fitness approached me while I was at the gym. He told me that there was no contract length and I could cancel at any time and I had to pay my first month and last month up front and just had to give a 30 day notice. When I cancelled my gym membership in August 2009 (the following month) after Professional Fitness already drafted another $100 from my account, when I called to cancel with Professional Fitness, they said I needed to pay almost $300. I never paid it and I got a letter in a mail from National Fitness (which is an outsourced agency) saying I needed to pay $1400 and it's only October. The worst part about it was that I paid Professional Fitness $300 in those two months and only received 2 weeks of training, because my trainer went on vacation for 3 weeks and when she came back I was gone for 2 weeks.
What Gold Gym does should be criminal I think everyone should ban together and make it known what crooks they are!
I agree! I am no longer a member of Peak Fitness but am still getting charged for Professional Training. It's impossible to use their services if you are not a member of the gym! First and most irritating is that I had to hunt down the number to cancel my contract with them only for them to tell me I had to send a certified letter, which I did in October. Side note, I voiced this concern when I originally signed up and was assured it was NO BIG DEAL, the salesperson even chuckled as he showed me how unofficial the contract was! They drafted a payment from my card on 11/24/08 and sent me a letter on 11/28 telling me I needed to send a cashiers check or money order for $80. I tried to tell them that they got their $80 on 11/24 from my draft and that since no services were rendered and $80 is $80 no matter what form! I only got the run around. They are like trained monkeys just repeating the contract. A real service provider would not have to use tactics as this to make money! Surprisingly, I never heard another word until I recieved a collections call in MAY telling me I owed $460! Surely, I thought I could straighten it out... so I called the collections office who gave me the number to their " CORPORATE OFFICE" real CORPORATE... LET ME TELL YOU! The rep I spoke with even agreed with me that the charges were ludicrous but couldn't help.From what it seems, his superiors care NOTHING at all about doing the right thing by their customers. I have added my experience to the countless complaints reported to the Attorney Generals office and recommend any and all to do the same. I know this is their livlihood but its a terrible business practice that needs to be called out.

I AGREE WITH HER. I HAVE MOVED OVER 50 MILES FROM THE GYM AND STILL THEY WILL NOT CANCELL THE MEMBERSHIP I HAVE WRITTEN AND E-MAILED WITHOUT ANY RESPONSE. POOR BUSINESS RELATIONS.
This post is WRONG. Professional Fitness is the outsourced Personal Training Department for Peak Fitnss not Gold's Gym. Professional Fitness has never been a part of the Gold's Gym's in Raleigh. If the person making the post can't even remember the name of the gym she signed up at, how can she remember any of the details. haha
