I wish there was a way to give no stars. This is a bs app and bank. They say you can get paid up to 2 days early but it is not one day before my pay day and I still don’t have my money. Then they give this bs generic response about how it depends on when the job sends it. Well I’ve been at this job for three years and had two other banks. One was two days early and the other was one day early and both paid when they said they would which means that my job definitely sends it early enough. Three years and the only time I don’t get paid early is when I go to this bank. I call bs. Then it has a message saying that it has 24/7 help but then I try to get help and they aren’t available. Then when I finally get to them, no one knows anything but the generic answer. I’ve worked in customer service and they have no personality, knowledge, and empathy. The app says something about getting paid 4 days before benefits day with government checks (I’m a vet). I asked the rep and they had no idea what I was talking about but ITS YOUR JOB TO KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT. Seriously? I had three jobs that I set up direct deposit for with this bank. I haven’t even gotten one check and I have already changed to Chime. I’m not gonna play these games cuz you don’t play with my money. It’s unbelievable. They do nothing to help you and know nothing but have the nerve to want to charge $10 for doing nothing...which is more than some banks that actually make an effort to help and don’t lie. I will be reporting this scam factory.

So I was very happy to start using them but that was quickly dashed when I got on their app, activated my card and tried to deposit a check and they said that I COULD NOT DEPOSIT A CHECK OR ANY MONEY UNTIL MY ACCOUNT WAS 30 DAYS OLD... tf is even the point of having them then if I can't even use my account for 30 days?! I just wasted over a week of my time waiting for the Green Dot card and got my hopes up for nothing and now I have to go to the bank/another location that cashes checks anyways because i'm not about to wait a month to get my money. We're still in the middle of a pandemic and millions of people are hurting for money (myself included) and you really expect people to wait 30 days to be able to get it? Heartless. My two checks from Paypal that I was wanting to cash aren't even for much- ones $29 and some change and the other is $4 and some change so it's not like i'm trying to deposit a million dollars... ♀️ Thanks for wasting my time Green Dot and oh by the way if you're gonna do that to people at least have the decency to let them know before they sign up with you and get your card. If you would've told me beforehand that I wouldn't be able to do anything for 30 days I wouldn't of even signed up.
Too long waiting on bank transfers
I made mistake without reading all the fine print but shouldn’t have had to. Last week ran into a problem with a government issued Debit card. Don’t even get me started on that one. Ran into car repair issues. Was trying to order groceries on line & get to work & around town on Uber. The government issued card worked on none of this. Amazingly Green Dot saved the day or at least I thought so. Was instantly able to transfer funds over onto my green dot card from the government issued card. Thought GREAT, now I can take care of business. To my horror the funds did not show in my GD balance. Had to search on the app & online to get some help. Eventually found info that told me the funds not available for 3 business days. Are you kidding me. In todays world of quick internet searches & transfers so it should never taken 3 business days. Still don’t have the large amount I transferred to GD. I know GD got it because it indicates the immediate Transfer was completed on the government issued card. So now, still waiting to get food, medicine, take more Uber rides to work, pay bills etc… I will not be doing that again. Makes me wonder how long it would take if I had my payroll check deposited.
The app itself is good. I appreciate the quick ability to slide the bar for quick assess balance. Without logging in every time. I sure hope my money transfer shows up today but doubt it. Did it last Wednesday night & still waiting. I’m sure whoever the administrators & CEOs at GD would have their money show up by now. You don’t mess with people’s money!

Green dot is such a farce. I bought my card and put a sum of money on it, thinking I could be using it in a few days. I bought it on 10/18. Here it is 10/24 and I still don’t have the new card and the card I bought won’t go thru yet. Costumer service is nice as long as you can keep the on the line long enough to read what you say. A “supervisor” did call me and told me I could use the card I bought until I got the new card. I used it and it didn’t go thru. It says you will your card in 3 business days, that would have been yesterday. So I talk to customer service and they said if I would have pd a $15 fee it would have been expedited and I would have gotten it in the three days. They said I would receive the card on Oct 29.
So don’t be stupid like me and put one of these cards especially if it is the only money you can spend!
If I could Iwould give them NO STARS! I am surprised you have the nerve to ask me to change my review after today. 10/28 now I give them no stars I still haven’t got a balance my , still have no money, and they told me I had $50.00. When I said that’s not right either, they said 7.95 was took out for service fee (what service, I haven’t received any service yet, $70 bucks is still not there) and that Amazon had sent some items thru! I HAVE NOT EVEN GIVEN AMAZON THIS NUMBER! So Amazon couldn’t have sent anything thru. So as it stands now after talking with who knows who on the phone, that says I only have 50 bucks and I can’t even get it because it still don’t work. So BEWARE THEY RIP YOU OFF THEN LIE ABOUT IT.
What Is Going On????
Tried using the app to fix my billing info because my Amazon order keeps getting declined for conflicting address details. Before anything else, the fact that all I can do anything but check transactions from the mobile site (idk about desktop— don’t have a pc currently) and am required to download the app is simply idiotic.
So I enter my login and the app tells me I need to log in to my account on the internet. I thought this was weird because I had already multiple times, was literally logged in RIGHT THEN, and had already made valid purchases with my card, but ok why not? I re-log in online, go back and log in on the app, it says the same exact thing... I close out the app and try again, same message, repeat in however many various orders/combos and still “You need to log in to GreenDot.com to access your account”.
So now I’m going to have to call customer support, where more likely than not I’ll just be told that they don’t know what the issue is and that they’ll just change my info for me, which is creepy and annoying to say the very least, and the issue won’t even be fixed. I can’t even begin to express how infuriating this is, especially during this pandemic when people are relying on online transactions more than ever to get what they need or want.
I know this probably won’t amount to anything because it seems that this has been an issue for a year or more and there has been no fix or even official response to the dozen (at least) people I’ve seen saying they have the same issue. So I guess all I have for you in the end is one star and a big middle finger.
THEY ALLOW ACCTS TO BE HACKED
If you value your money put it anywhere but with Greendot! Between 9/23 & 9/25 they allowed OVER $8k thru 700+ transactions to be hacked & stolen from my acct. Help is basically non-existent & forget ever being able to speak to someone in the US. Even reaching out on socials has proved inconsequential as they do not give relevant answers to anything.
There is a poser acct on IG pretending to be Greendot & even though they have been made aware of this weeks (maybe longer) ago- the scam acct is still up. In fact, they are who is responsible for stealing my money. They watch the IG acct like hawks & msg ppl having trouble to try & get your info. They even have the same profile pic
You cannot dispute transactions until they’re out of the pending stage & they want YOU to do a ridiculous amnt of work & jumping through hoops to get your money back even though THEY DO NOTHING to make sure your money is safe & protected.
The only phone number is to a call center overseas & the reps are not knowledgable of how banking works so they only copy/paste.
They tell you your acct cannot overdraft which is the main reason I went with them but here my acct sits -$3329.xx. When I asked how that happened I was told ‘Google pushed it through’. My acct should have been flagged for suspicious activity after the first 20 transactions made back to back from the same place but even after 700+ & a balance of $0, they allowed the thieves to continue. There are horror stories all over the web of instances just like this. It is now Oct 3 & I have not been helped nor has my money been replaced- NOTHING!
A ripoff!
I was looking for a VISA prepaid card for my young son and was recommended a Green Dot card by an associate at CVS. I put $50 on it for him and not seeing any real explanation on the card, I went ahead and got it from CVS. I made one purchase of $15.90 with the card that I got. I then went to check the available balance on the card, and it made me open a Green Dot account. I noticed the card had immediately taken a $7.95 fee, which then said they were mailing a debit card to me and would transfer the balance of the money to the debit card. Thinking it would only charge a one-time fee, I put the card aside. A couple of months later when my son wanted to spend some of the money I put on there for him, I logged into the account and noticed it had been taking $7.95 per month. All that was left was $12.16 of the $50. I was livid! I immediately tried closing the account and forwarded the remaining funds to my own email account to at least keep the last bit of money that there was left. Well, little did I know that you can only retrieve the money by having a Green Dot account, a Walmart money card or a Gobank account, in which all three charge fees. So, basically I am stuck now to give another fee to one of these cards to get my money. Out of the $50 that I put of MY OWN MONEY on this card, I have only been able to use $15.90 of it. The rest went entirely to fees. I consider this a BIG scam of a card. The explanation on this card is terrible! I would have never have gotten it from CVS if I would have known this. No fees should have been used of the $50 of my OWN money at all! VERY UPSET!
Do not use this service
I began using Green Dot in the fall of 2019, and by January , I already knew I wanted out. Monthly fees of $7.95 no matter how you use the account just weren’t for me. So I began the process of requesting the account be closed, and to receive a refund for the remaining money in that account.
It is now May 21st, and I’m sorry to say I am STILL in the process of receiving a refund check. Each time I call the customer support line, I am forced to wait an average of one and half hours, sometimes more to speak with anyone.
Every time I do get to speak with someone, they instruct me of the same, seemingly simple process to receive a refund check. They are asking for a picture of the front and back of my drivers license, and a bill with my address to be emailed to their refund request address.
They instruct that I must wait 2 weeks for the check to be mailed. They will not simply send a reply stating if the email has been received, so I have to wait and then retry calling customer support when nothing arrives. I have been stuck in this loop for 5 months, each time getting either the response that: No inquiry has been filed on their side, or that the pictures sent are insufficient. I’ve heard everything from “the pictures are too blurry.” to “it can’t just be any bill with your address, it must be a utility, phone, or other such bill.”
I can assure you the photos were taken on an IPhone X and were not at all blurry. I sent my vehicle registration bill for the DMV, and I can’t see how that wasn’t sufficient.
Please, do not use this service. I wouldn’t wish this hell on anyone.
Very bad
I filed my taxes about a month ago and got direct deposit through green dot, I’ve been using them for years now to pay bills and whatever I need. Right now during this pandemic is the most essential time to speak to a representative or customer at green dot and they took that down from the customer service number everyone has been calling, Green Dot sent my direct deposit check back to the IRS because they said it didn’t match something on my card info but didn’t tell me exactly what, my tax return was deposited April 22nd it’s now May 1st and I still haven’t been able to speak to a representative at Green Dot to fix this issue nor the IRS but that’s a different story, Bills are do today,I haven’t worked in more then a month my stimulus check was also scheduled for a direct deposit through Green Dot but I still haven’t received it. I’m very very disappointed and upset. Once all this is over and hopefully I can get this issue fixed soon, I will be canceling my Green dot account, this is the worst customer service I ever experienced in my life, can’t get any customer service at all.
This is ridiculous, I don’t know what to do and you guys just made it worse for me.
If I were you I wouldn’t deal with Green Dot, look what happened to me, now I have late fees and have to pay extra money out of my pocket that I don’t even have, hopefully I get my money soon but it doesn’t look like it, and F&Q’s doesn’t help at all, what if they don’t have an answer for your question? Then what, you can’t even speak to a human being. Everything is automated and only automated YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SPEAK TO A HUMAN BEING IF YOU NEED HELP.
They don’t care about you or your money
I had the un pleases the experience of having then back our Apple Pay in the wallet system. My account was compromised and was charged by a transport company named bird, which I did not use. This was one of 3 accounts that were fraudulently charged and green dot happens to be the bank behind apples wallet. I called and made a dispute and let them know I didn’t make these charges. They’re response was that I allowed someone else to have my password and they used my account therefore I’m liable. NO ONE knows my account info and I had to replace all my cards to secure my funds. They take no accountability nor do they assist us in being able to do a charge back for fraudulent charges.
BEWARE THEY WILL BEND YOU OVER AND SCREW YOU OUT OF YOUR MONEY! They pretend to be professional like the lads named Jules a supervisor that works for green dot, but they don’t care. I asked for her manager she doesn’t want to give it. Doesn’t matter because I instantly lost all trust in the wallet, and transferred my funds back over to my bank. I seriously hope that Apple does better research with the companies they decide to do business with, and change them out to a better bank, perhaps one that cares about the customers and consumers that use them. Your money is not protected like they claim. I’m just glad it was 30 bucks and not like the $110 they hit on my other card. At least from them I was able to dispute it and my bank recognized that was fraudulent since I don’t use that. Super disappointed that Apple uses this bank behind their wallet system and I will not use them going forward until that changes. Poor customer service and lack of understanding. Good luck if you do decide to use this.
Face ID no longer working
I’ve been a huge fan of both Green Dot Bank and the Green Dot App until today! A few days ago the Apple iPhone Face ID stopped working on the Green Dot App. I logged onto the App manually and toggled on the Face ID switch. It requested my password (of course) and I typed it in. But the return message said “The information you entered does not match our records. Try again.” So I tried again. Same result. I tried several times over three days with the same result.
So naturally I called Green Dot for assistance. The representative was polite but claimed, very forcefully, the The Green Dot App doesn’t have the Face ID feature and never has! She told me that someday, maybe, in the future, they might add that feature. I told her I used it for the entire last year and she basically called me a liar. I requested to speak to a supervisor. She assured me that was unnecessary as she told me everything there is to know. After I requested several times to speak to a supervisor, she told me one would have to call me back.
About 6 hours later a supervisor called. He was also polite but also assured me that The Green Dot App doesn’t offer the Apple Face ID feature. I asked him if he happened to have the App on his phone. He told me he did not and had, in fact, never seen the App in person but that he had all the technical specs in front of him and there was no option to access the Apple Face ID. Wow! He put me on hold for several minutes and said he spoke to “everyone” in the Help Call Center and absolutely no one had ever heard of the Face ID and Green Dot didn’t offer that feature. No one there had the App on their phone (I assume this is a non-USA located center).
Now I’m certain you will actually correct this bug. But some serious training needs to happen in the Green Dot Bank call center. I am embarrassed for you.
STAY AWAY! Cannot deposit checks
UPDATESee "developer response" to the below complaint. Green Dot actually told me to try making the check more VISIBLE! The ignorance here is insane. I complained about Certegy and mobile check deposits being declined, and was told by Green Dot to "take better pictures"... which has nothing to do with Certegy denying the deposit... STAY AWAY FROM GREEN DOT AT ALL COSTS!
Original review/complaint- Green Dot uses an ultra-sketchy third party company to screen check deposits. The company is called Certegy and I highly recommend any one considering Green Dot look up Certegy on ComplaintsBoard.com. They're an AWFUL company and thick as thieves. Twice Certegy has denied a mobile check deposit without ANY reason. Family members have written me personal checks and when I attempt to deposit them into my account through Green Dot, this Certegy company steps in and says no. Take into consideration this is a DEPOSIT into my account, and in no way an outgoing transfer. They won't even bother to hold the ACH until it clears, they just deny the deposit and ask you to call an 800 number where you get the run around from an automated system.
This is not an insufficient funds issue, this is just Green Dot and Certegy saying "we don't feel like giving you a chance" after twenty seconds. My wife and I have spent hours on the phone trying to reach someone from Green Dot or Certegy and both are simply Indian call centers that put you on hold and transfer you around until you hang up.
AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL. Can't wait to cut up this card and go with another prepaid card company.
In Green Dots defense though, this "Certegy" will not be in business long. Fascinating ComplaintsBoard.com reviews, never seen anything like it, they're garbage and customers who encounter them always run in the opposite direction, away from anyone who is foolish enough to hire them
PLS FIX OT REVERT BACK ASAP!
Let me preface this by stating that if this app is not fixed PROMPTLY, it is problematic enough for me to take steps to discontinue my direct deposits to the account and quickly migrate to a more reliable option...AMEX Serve for example. This IMPORTANT app was never "great" on it's best & least buggy day, but this new version is borderline unusable. Prior to the update one could expect to at LEAST log in somewhat quickly for a balance update on the fly. There were no bells and whistles, but it worked. NOW, post update, I am lucky to get ANY account info in 5+ mins, and that's while connected to a strong high speed wifi connection. Half of that time is spent waiting for the LOG-IN screen to LOAD! And after the login info is entered, it takes MINUTES to load any account info. Let's be reasonable here...there is no possible way that ANY developer could be satisfied with this end product. I can only assume that the developer was either selected based on the lowest contract price (& likely the least experienced skill set) resulting in an end product goal that exceeded ability, or the developer was rushed to release this new app to appease some corporate entity that failed to consider the negative ramifications of pushing for the release of an app that shouldn't have even been released for beta testing.
Regardless of the root cause of the problem (my assumptions could be way off base), the fact that any company would so blindly release such an inferior yet VITAL product nearly, if not completely, destroys my faith in this company's ability to safeguard my money, and in turn my day to day livelihood. Very scary indeed.
I apologize for typos, I'm frustrated and don't feel like proofing. If my point isn't clear to you, you clearly have not attempted to use this app & stopped to consider the message that it sends about the company as a whole. I suggest you do exactly that ASAP.
My #1 mobile banking app experience
If I had done a review 18 months ago I would have probably rated it as a bad app, but the app developers have done a great job with bug fixes and all around quality of the app I use 6-7 mobile banking apps and Green Dot has the most user friendly app I’ve had so far it’s so easy to navigate and use all of the free features inside the app and I love the slide for balance it keeps me from having to open the entire app when I want to check my account balance and I almost forgot to send a bill out to be paid once so I opened my account in the app and one push I was sending out a check for my bill payment no late fees thanks to bill pay in the app that’s totally free to setup recurring bill payment if u want it or order checks in the app to send out yourself there’s also a free send money feature, mobile check deposit, a high yield interest savings account available for free, cash back on approved online purchases and other approved purchases you can always look at your transactions and lock your debit card whenever you need to ten just open the app and one push of a button unlock your debit card or cash in on your cash back rewards just about anything you want to do can be done inside this banking app there is just one complaint I have and it’s just a personal hang up around 2 years ago this wonderful app was completely free not a penny but a few months ago a monthly fee was added to the account holders of a green dot checking account this (small monthly fee )is nothing compared to the features that are available in the app and there all free (to order checks fees may apply) I would add one feature though then it would be the best hands down mobile banking app that is make it available for an account holder to speak to a live customer service agent so HARD to do right now I’m currently trying to get a issue for my other account I have with Green Dot resolved and I have tried everything there is to try that’s available on the app or on the site so Green Dot definitely worth a try and referral to friends and family
Scamm they will rob you!
I wish I would’ve never did business with this company they put a block on my card told me I had to go to the website and submit a pic of my Id which I did 40 minutes later I was able to use it again at that point I wish I’d pulled all my money out and put a stop to my direct deposit from because the next day less than 24 hrs they blocked my card again saying the same thing which I did but this time an hr later they closed my account for apparent reason with all my money to my name on the card now when I call the number on the back of the card it ask me to put in my card info n ssn then tells me my account is closed and I can no longer open any other cards with bank then simply hangs up on me I had to call a number with direct deposit they told me that they put on a call back from corporate the next day she guaranteed it but like thought it was a lie no one called I sent a email stating what was goin on they replied back next morning saying login on the website and email us which I thought I did lol since your (green dot) sending a email back or to call number on card when u guys no if the account is closed calling the number on the back of the card is pointless cause you’ll get nowhere but hung up on . Now I’m broke with a nine year old son that I can’t buy groceries for or pay my rent next week let alone get gas to get back n forth t work like really green dot I doubt you really care but that’s the position you have me n my son in I’m a single father struggling to take care of my son by myself. I doubt you’ll even respond back on my email cause you guys know you’re in the wrong it’s always easy to ignore someone when you have the power in the situation n you probably won’t respond to this review either cause I’m not lying to everyone saying how good this bank/app is cause this a scam . I’m pretty sure I’m gonna have to get a lawyer and go to court to get my money back! SMFH don’t waste your time with these guys they’ll rob you blind . Like really how do close a person account for no reason then no give them an option or away to get their money off the card or send a check
Functional but mostly useless
Only good thing about this bank is that you get paid early which is a good bonus to have with this bank. Problems start with customer service when speaking with them regarding withdrawals via bank tellers they will tell you the exact same thing and say try again. I attempted to make a withdrawal from a bank teller at a financial institution where YOU HAVE TO VERIFY YOUR IDENTITY to do so. All said and done I was denied tellers couldn’t give a reason why. I spoke to support and they said that their system flagged it as suspicious. I tell them I’m at a bank where I verify my identity so how is that suspicious. They come up with the usual “they’ll submit a ticket to resolve this and it would take an hour.” One hour later, I go to a different bank and go through the same procedure as the previous bank. Guess what? Same thing. I speak to support and they, ONCE AGAIN tell me the SAME THING. Have to wait for them to submit a ticket and try again. I went through 5 different banks and they all denied me and I spoke to 5 DIFFERENT support reps and they said THE SAME EXACT THING, word for word.
With Apple Pay I have the same issue with support. On my end Apple needs me to call my bank and have them send me some sort of code. So I follow those instructions, simple right? Nope, I spend countless hours on the phone trying to get my Apple Pay set up which support tells me they send me an email link or text message, I didn’t get either one and I called them every day for a week just to make sure that I’m doing everything on my end right. Still haven’t gotten a response from them. From there on Green Dot is pretty much useless and support is just not living up to its name. Even when they leave you on hold for an extended amount of time just to find some piece of useful information that would be rendered moot.
Transferring money from your Green Dot bank Account should be easy right? But they don’t even support it! You can send money to your Green Dot bank account but not from it. What sense does that make?! Only way to do is by that text link you send them which can only be used by either A, another Green Dot Bank account(Don’t know why they’d use it in the first place) or B, Walmart prepaid/refillable debit card. You can’t use your own card with a different bank.
Worthless feature
I don’t know what took so long to write a review, but here we go...
The the mobile deposit feature was great a couple years ago when it was first introduced. Enter the check amount, sign and date, snap a picture, and decide whether you want you money now- for a fee, of course- or if you’d like to wait a couple days for a deposit, for free. So it had been a year and a half since I last used the feature, so imagine my shock when I used it and they told me the money wouldn’t be available for a week. I was confused that it didn’t ask me when I wanted the money and it just went through. There was no warning message asking “are you sure you want to make this deposit”, nor was there any clear understanding on the deposit page stating that there were updates made and that the money would take a week to become available. However, it did ask me to snap a pickoff my id again so I was like maybe it was for security purposes and everything would go back to normal after this one deposit and don’t think more of it. Fast forward a month or so later and I have a new job that doesn’t offer direct deposit. Bummer. But wait, I have the GreenDot mobile deposit. Maybe they will deposit it right away now since I’ve updated everything. WRONG! I did everything like usual and still, no warning, nothing saying this will not be deposited for a week. Nothing. I would see my check for at least 5 business days. Worst part is, July 4 was the following week, which means I wouldn’t see the deposit til July 9th. So I called customer service and I’ve never been in a situation where I wanted to yell at a person who was SUPPOSED to help me. She was very rude, super nasty attitude, just not helpful at all. You would think she knew and disliked me personally the way that she was speaking to me. She never did anything to help resolve the issue, but she did give me the number to corporate and I called and never heard from from them or got a callback. It was enough to make me want to cancel my account. I love my GreenDot card, but between customer service and an app that defeats its own purpose, I just keep it basic until the card expires. I call it worthless because I don’t drive so I use ride-share or public transportation to commute. The feature was super convenient because I can just snap a picture of the check and have it available immediately. No extra travel or fees to have it cashed at a currency exchange, just deposit and carry on. If I have to wait a week, I may as well just spend the extra money for travel, a fee to cash it, and another fee to add it to my GreenDot card. There’s no convenience in that.
Total nightmare
I got this card, “Reloadable, pay as you go, Visa debit card, operated by Green Dot,” as a gift, but, as it happened, it never got that far. Bought it at Ralphs in LA, California. Got the card, which said clearly on the package, “no monthly fees,” and loaded $160 cash in it. The fee for the card was about $4.
I followed the instructions to activate the card, both on the website GreenDot.com as well as this app, TENS OF TIMES, let me repeat, tens of times, unsuccessfully. After researching online, I found their customer support number (not on their website, or app). I called and they told me it was up to the seller to help me. I know, it makes no sense, but here I go back to the store, ask for the general manager, and I’m given the corporate number who deals with cards like this. Please keep EVERY receipt, especially a separate one that tells you how much money you initially put on the card, etc. With that information, they found the transaction and gave me a case number and told me to call GreenDot customer service again. Please note that there is NO REFUND, all prepaid card sales being final. This time I was more aggressive, and got them to activate it for me. They kept on complaining that they’re only allowed TWO minutes per customer call, but I wouldn’t let him go until they activated it for me. He started reading me the small print and telling me there’ll be a monthly FEE— I lost it. I yelled at him that the package says no fees, and he responded that it’s my duty to contest the fees! After that, I quickly went to see if it worked, because although I went through the process tens of times, a process which asked for your name, address, cellphone number, full social security number AND date of birth (with that information ANYONE can open bank accounts in your name, buy cars or houses, etc., and ruin your credit), it never got through so I didn’t know if the PIN number I was trying to set was registered. Well, it seems it was...
So here I look for a cash machine on their map and try to take my money out. The machine only dispensed $100, changed me $4 to use it, and GreenDot charged another $3. So I was left with $53, which I used at a retailer. NOT to my surprise, GreenDot knocked another $3 for that transaction, as well.
So, including the $3.95 which is the price to buy this crap, I was out of pocket $13.95 to use $150 of my own money. Total scam, very unprofessional and unfriendly.
Lesson learned: NEVER, EVER use them again, and share my experience. I wasted several hours on the phone and online. If you MUST use a prepaid card, USE ANOTHER.

For what it is, It’s Good to Great
Let’s be honest, it’s an app for a prepaid visa/MasterCard and therein lies the root of where expectations need to me focused on. My wife and I each keep a GreenDot for emergencies, for very specific usages as we deem necessary and, when I was without income waiting on my disability to finally ‘kick in’c this was useful for the times that family helped us out financially as - regardless of where they were in the country versus our location - if there were no bank branches in common around either party, simply doing a MoneyPak was cheaper, easier and quicker than Western Union/MoneyGram/Walmart2Walmart, etc. especially when I couldn’t get out of the house. It’s also helpful to let our daughter have a card since she lives across the country and we can assist her too.
But, if anyone expects this to fully replace a bank account and have the exact level of benefits or feature sets, I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed. It certainly can be used as such - especially if you find yourself unable to obtain an account for awhile - as it does have Direct Deposit ability and you can order checks for this account too. However, there are just certain things you can’t do with it but that’s ok.
It’s perfect for what it is intended to be.
Personally, we keep everything with Navy Federal Credit Union - including a reloadable card for our daughter now - and that way (besides our 1 American Express Platinum each, 1 Discover Card each, 1 VISA from Unify Credit Union each, 1 MasterCard from a Delta credit union each, 1 VISA from Justice Department CU each, and 1 MasterCard from AirForce Credit Union each) we keep everything with Navy Federal; each of our car loans, home mortgage, 2 Personal lines of Credit each, 4 Checking Account Lines of Credit each, auto/homeowners/life/etc. Insurance(s) each, 2 VISA Credit Cards, 2 MasterCards, 2 American Express Cards from with Navy along with 25 checking accounts and 25 savings accounts all with Navy Federal Credit Union. (We basically only use the AMEX Platinum to literally auto-pay 100% of our monthly bills with that card to earn the points and then pay off the AMEX Platinum every month. All the other cards sit in our safe at home for emergencies only (and to keep our revolving credit limits extraordinarily high versus our credit usage). It’s just easier that way.
However, for certain needs or for those of us that have been in - or are still experiencing - tough financial times, GreenDot is EXCELLENT and I can’t recommend it enough.
They certainly were a huge help to us as we navigated our personal downturn and then back out of it.
Much more recommended than the likes of Netspend, 7-11, PayPal or the others.
App works. Company as a whole is a joke
First off the app works fine and loads quickly and is pretty much up to speed with all your transactions. The problem itself lies with the GreenDot company as a whole. I’ve had a card with them for about two months now, and every single time I put money on it I get blocked out of my account and then have to call customer service just to be treated like I’m an idiot and a criminal. The first day I activated the card and loaded my paycheck onto it I had issues. It didn’t show my money having been deposited. I called and questioned why. They responded by telling me that they were having technical difficulties and that I should continue to monitor my account. So I asked what they were doing to resolve these issues and what they might happen to be. I was given run around answers and given the Same line repeatedly, “we are having technical difficulties you need to monitor your account”. I became frustrated and asked to speak to a supervisor and was told they had no supervisors and was hung up on, and again upon calling back. A few hours later my money finally arrives.
Two weeks later I have my check being direct deposited onto my card. It arrives I get the notification from the app (nice touch) then I go to sign into the app and it tells me my account has been suspended and blocked. I call customer service. Am asked for all info regarding my account; name, address, phone number... after “verifying” it was my account they ask what I need help with. I state I’ve been blocked from my account and would like to know why. They inform me that the deposit from my employer had fraudulent information and I need to send verification to them and it will take two days before my account is unblocked. I ask what was fraudulent about it considering I used the app to email my employer directly so all information exchange was directly sent to and from both ends, no human errors to account for. They proceed to treat me as a child and tell me they don’t know why it was flagged or what was fraudulent about it that their risk assessment department handles that. I ask to be transferred to that department, I am told they do not receive calls. I ask if their is a supervisor or someone I can talk to who can give me a straight answer. I am denied and told again they do not have access to the information that is fraudulent only that my account has been suspended. This goes back and forth for ten minutes or so, me asking for information, and me being given the same non answers. I eventually get hung up on and rush to my work to get the information they said I need to send them. Hurry and send it, call back and once again go through the entire process again. This time I being to become frustrated, I’ve done everything they have asked I’ve proven I am me and that the money belongs to me. They continue to treat me as a child or like I’m an imposter, I begin to get loud and use a couple of swear words and in the end am hung up on. Imagine my surprise when i get off the phone that my account has been reopened.
Two weeks go by again and today the same thing has happened. I check my account money has been deposited, I make a transaction it goes through. I make an appointment to get a haircut, as I go to leave I go to check my balance again and am met with the app saying that I have been blocked from my account and it is under review.
Oh great, I’m thinking, here we go again. I’m oreganos foolishly hopeful that this time it will be much simpler being as I have already proven that it is me and my account and that the employer is my employer, right? Wrong. I call customer service, play 21 questions to prove it’s my account and I’m me, I wait on hold for 20 minutes. I again am told my account is blocked and that it is under review and that if I call the automated number it has all the latest up to date information. I question as to why it’s been put under review, am informed that I have been given enough information and that I should call the customer service number for up to date information. I state that this exact thing happened two weeks ago. Stated why and how it was resolved. Asked for a supervisor, this time I’m put on hold briefly, and then told all supervisors are either busy or on a call already but that I could make an appointment and would be called back within the next 24 hours. I’m starting to become quite fed up at this point, yet I remain civil, no raising my voice or use of any foul language. Again I question if we can skip all of the unnecessary steps and just get to the part where they unlock my account and let me have my money. I am then given the most ridiculous answer I’ve ever heard. I am told that their computer system is what flagged my account and that there was no way that anyone could change it or do anything to fix the problem, now I may not be a computer engineer or be able to hack my way into the government buildings, but I know enough to know that when you have a system responsible for... well anything, that there is always a way for human input to override or alter something if need be. Especially if dealing with peoples money. Computers and electronic systems like this make errors, quite frequently, and even if no error has been made certainly human judgment should be able to out weigh computed logic. All in all this is the worst company I have ever had the displeasure of having to work with. The customer should be treated at least with respect and made into a villain. On 9/19/2023 I bought a Green Dot debit Visa pay as you go card, and paid cash from Walgreens located at 9458 Helena Road Pelham Alabama 35124. The time was 2:55 p.m. The advection number is [protected]. the valid through date is 01/25. The cvv is 125. I put $100.00 dollars on the card when I paid for it as you can see from the receipt. I tried many times to register and to activate this card and I am told the card is invalid every time. I called the help line and was told the card was no good. I in good faith bought this card thinking it was good. It is not. At this time, I want either a refund (check) of $103.95, or a new card with my $100.00 dollars on it that is good sent to P.O. My daughter selected greendot as a payment from the i.R. S. However, when she transferred 1000 to my account, tha, allowed it deducted it and then blocked my account claiming possible fraud. I emailed verifying documents over 7 times but immediately I get a response that it's wrong without explanation. They have blocked any possibilities of me calling or emailing and has said they will close it permanently and not just refund it tomy daughter or the irs. Prepaid cards
Green Dot has placed a block on my account. Asking me to send in ID to verify my identity. Which I did, and they told me that I wasn’t who I said I was, and that I needed to contact the bank where the transfer originated from. Which I also did, and gathered all of that information. Green Dot assumed the funds were from a tax return because the transfer was initiated by Intuit. However, the funds are not from the IRS. They are funds from a loan I agreed to pay back in installments. Now not only can I not access the money, but I am still required to pay back the loan. I have called numerous times. Once I was waiting on the phone 3 hours only to speak briefly to an agent who said she needed to transfer me to the correct department. However, the call was then disconnected. Green Dot is still charging their monthly fee, and claiming I am not the Green Dot account owner. So, basically they are stealing my money and not working with me to resolve the issue with the account.
Desired outcome: I would like my account unblocked and my funds available.

My significant other and I have a green dot account with quite a bit money for our living expenses. Green dot has locked our account ,and I have given them the ID verification they asked for ,and clearly where they can see it ,but it was denied. I've talked to the customer service person,and they said the only way to get it unlocked is to purchase 3 new green dot cards and load them with 500 dollars each so our funds could be transferred to them. On June 1, 2023 I had my back pay directly deposited into my green dot account, in the amount of 47,000 before I even had a chance to withdrawal anything it was permanently locked. I called green dot where I sent in my ID card and they said they won't accept it as it was a permanent resident card they needed a state ID or Driver's license so I had to go to DNV and get one, after I did that I have mailed in my ID over 10-15x and they keep telling me they are waiting for review. So it's been almost 2 months and my account is still locked I get absolutely no where when I call just the same thing over and over again that it's under review it will be unlocked ked in 2 days I'm told this over and over again, I don't know what to do any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Like other reviewer said, support is unable to help you and does not give you direct answers. When I was more specific in questions, support staff said to check agreement and told me to have a nice day and cut off the chat.
Once you register your card, there is a7.95 monthly fee you have to pay. My gift card had a balance of 50.00 dollars when I received it. I’m down to the last $10.00 in the card and still unable to access the money on the card. The app crashes when you try to register card and sends you to the same screen over and over. It’s an endless process that makes it impossible to retrieve the balance on the card. Therefore, frustrating you enough to give up trying.
Never again will I use this to gift to others as I really loved gifting these. Will ask any friends family members to please not gift this to me as the company merely takes all your info name, SS, address and suddenly an account is created to apply for a green dot debit card and unable to use the money. It’s set up great to keep your money! Steer clear.

Some helpful info when you get this card download the money card app from Walmart. I am telling you this cause it will save you a lot of trouble with customer support. if you have any problems with the card or you find that they are not giving you your money as they usually do you simply need to go on the app and cancel or close your account and they will send it to you via check or allow you to pick it up at Walmart I suggest picking it up at Walmart. they made multiple attempts to keep me out of my account and away from my funds, claiming fraud, which was really just an excuse for them to try to swindle me out of my money, hoping I would give up. horrible horrible customer support, the worst I have ever dealt with. I have no idea why Walmart is associated with them. You will regret banking with them so just don’t. I do apologize for this being so long so I would leave you all on this please report them to the ComplaintsBoard.com like I did if you guys really want to see them held accountable because these people do not care.

Very frustrating, very disappointed & I lost my money
I just buy a “Load and go” prepaid card to make a online purchase. I put 206 dollars on it and I can’t use it because doesn’t go through in the verification process. It is a visa card, I had to call a visa because the green dot customer support numbers are terrible and nonexistent for this card, that is, they create a product for which they do not have service to the consumer. There is no way to communicate with a representative of green dot. Important information: VISA RECOMMENDED ME NOT TO BUY GREEN DOT CARDS.
On visa they tried to communicate me with a green dot representative in different ways but nevertheless they did not get any response, they even transferred me with MasterCard to see if they could help me contact a representative and still, nothing.
I needed to make a purchase urgently and what was supposed to be "instant use" became a terrible headache. Now I have money that I can not use.
PS: I have never written a review but the truth is that they really deserve a drastic improvement they can not scam people like that. At least return my money!

THE. WORST
i bought this card so i could temporarily make online purchases while i was getting a bank account.
i signed up and i have my money on my account, but as soon as i enter my information anywhere the card is declined. i called the customer service number & they say my personal information wasn’t correct. so i try to log in on the app to change it and i can’t get in. constantly a notice pops up and says “ you need to log on to green dot to access your account “. completely worthless app.
anyways, i log on to my account on the browser and all it shows is my balance, reload, transactions, atm & reload map, fee waiver and log out. there’s no settings for me to edit or even see.
i go into card help on the green dot website and find a question “ how to manage my green dot account “ and when i click on it, 3 BLANK bullet points are there with no information.
i have completely wasted my time and money for a completely worthless card.
HOPEFULLY it works on in-person purchases and i can take all the money back off the card; if not, i don’t know what i’ll do.
i wish i could give 0 stars honestly.

Wouldn’t Recommend
Recently there was a transaction on my card that I did not authorize through PayPal, I called to report it and was told that I would have to have my card blocked and wait 7-10 business days for a new card and also wait for green dot to investigate to receive my funds back. I then received an email that I was unable to receive my funds and I also got charged a $5.00 fee for having to get a new card. I felt that was very unfair to lose out on money and get charged for a card that I did not lose or damage the card was in my position the whole time which I don’t understand how it was charged on PayPal, however, why charge me for a new card that fee should have been waived. I ended up losing out on $55.00 in total. Companies these days do not understand the definition of good customer service or basic common sense, why charge a fee for a card that was not lost or damaged. Good customer service is not charging the customer more money after they have already lost out. Going further I will definitely be opting out of using Green Dot and try another company to use with more common sense customer service.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT CHOOSING THIS CARD AS A DEBIT NOR CREDIT CARD
Day One: This app doesn’t reset itself, it takes a long time to receive verifications, and it bumps you out when you leave the app to receive their verification codes via email, & text. I’m currently locked out of this app. Hopefully the developers will fix these glitches. Also, this card is not accepted at a lot of places, mainly the purpose for purchasing this card was not met. At this point in time, I wouldn’t recommend this card, nor app to anyone.
*Day Two: Tried to reset my password, & I’m locked out of the app, again. These are pretty basic programming issues. I’m surprised this app went live before they had these basic functions covered. You must leave an app to check your text message, or email to receive the codes they send to reset your account. Each time I was bumped out of the verification process, & was asked to sign in again. After trying three times, I’m locked out of my account, again. This is absurd! I will not use this card again after the initial balance is gone. This is the worst debit card in the world, & the app is absurd! I DON’T RECOMMEND THIS CARD AS A DEBIT NOR CREDIT CARD.

It’s July 13,2018 and (1) I have been waiting to speak to a “specialist” for OVER 3 and A HALF HOURS! (2) I got money transferred to my account by routing and account number which you would think it would go through automatically since it’s being transferred by GoBank which is APART OF GREEN DOT. (3) I went online to speak to someone live and it’s “closed” (4)it’s a flipping Friday and ive been on the phone since 1:30 pm and no one can tell me where my money is or how to retrieve it. (5)I NOT ONLY WASTED MY DAY WAITING TO GET HELP...(6) There’s no one to Help.(7) I’m stranded in the middle of no where, no gas and haven’t ate in hours and there’s money in limbo that I have no access to. Waste of money
This is the most regrettable purchase I have ever made. After I received confirmation that “This card and pin are now ready to use, but can only be used for purchase transactions. You cannot add money to the card or use it for ATM or cash access.” “The first $7.95 Monthly Charge will be deducted tomorrow or after the first transaction - whichever comes first.”
When I attempted to use this waste of plastic and funds, the card was declined, although it clearly said it’s ready to use, (I still have the screen shot). The total amount for my purchase was below the balance on the card, yet it still declined.
Do yourself a favor and DON’T EVER BECOME A GREEN DOT REGRETFUL CUSTOMER.
Furthermore calling customer service proved to be useless, even after three tries, you can not speak to an actual human, pressing 0, which usually gets you to a human, gets the call disconnected with this waste of a company.
One more thing, this waste of plastic can not be used for online purchases, in person only. Their terms indicate that this card can not be used for online gambling, but does not mention online baby product purchases. So forget convenience, this was definitely not designed for that purpose.

I still haven’t received my money
It’s now going onto a year since I lost my money through the online bank. In March I received a payment into my online banking and the money vanished out of my account to someone else’s account. I went ahead and called the online bank to file a dispute. I explained to them what happened as soon as i noticed my money was gone. They file the dispute and contact me throw mail saying they are reviewing the dispute. It takes about a month and I hear back from them in May throw mail once again. Stated that it was granted my money would be given back. Since then I hear nothing, I call and I have been given the run around multiple times leading me to be frustrated. I even asked to talk to supervisors and once I’m contacted to them, the phone has complications for some odd reason and the call fails. I myself still have access to my personal online account and the money is literally being taken out monthly for the service charge even though I was told I can’t access the money. I am over it and don’t want anyone else to go through the nonsense. I would like to definitely report this incident to Corporate. I need answers and my money and I will no longer be in contact with this bank.

I’ve had a GreenDot card for awhile but never decided to use them until recently♀️ Strike one May 16 there was a charge made on my account that I didn’t authorize called the customer service specialist and was told my card would be canceled & I’d have to wait & receive a new one which would take 7 to 10 business days & my paycheck was to be deposited that week so I cancel the dispute. Strike 2 June 2 I’m at breakfast with my family, we enjoy our meal then it’s time to pay the server informs me that my card was declined which was odd because I just got paid. Go next door to Royal Farms to use the Atm & it’s says card unauthorized call GreenDot again and I’m informed my card has been cancelled from the May 16 incident which I was told it wouldn’t be. So again I call GreenDot and I’m allowed to transfer my funds to an old card until the new one comes smooth sailing finally Fast forward to today the new card comes I call and I’m now told I can’t transfer the funds from the old card to the new one because my address doesn’t match like if I was told this from the beginning I wouldn’t have an issue but it seems like the company just does what it wants I wouldn’t recommend using GreenDot
