To Whom It May Concern,
Subject: Formal Complaint Against Green Motion Car Rental – Unethical Business Practices & Fraudulent Charges
I am writing to formally file a complaint regarding my recent experience with Green Motion Car Rental at their Fort Lauderdale FL Location. My experience was not only financially exploitative but also distressing, leading to irreparable harm during my trip. Below is a detailed account of the unacceptable business practices I encountered.
Deceptive Practices and Unethical Behavior
1. Off-Site Location & Transportation Issues
o Upon arrival, I faced significant travel delays, including a long flight, delayed baggage, and multiple transfers (bus and van) to reach Green Motion’s off-site rental location.
o Once there, I immediately noticed dissatisfied customers leaving the premises, warning of a terrible experience.
2. Discriminatory Practices
o While waiting in line, I overheard an individual with a service guide dog being denied a rental vehicle, which is a clear violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
3. Exorbitant Deposits & Hidden Fees
o Customers ahead of me in line were charged a shocking $2,000 security deposit and had been waiting for well over an hour without resolution.
o Upon reaching the counter, I was informed I must purchase additional insurance for liability at $135, along with a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) charge and a deposit fee.
o I had already purchased a protection plan through Expedia, yet Green Motion refused to honor it.
o Despite having full coverage through my personal Travelers auto insurance policy and credit card benefits, the company denied all external coverage options, forcing me into their overpriced policies under duress.
4. Hostage-Like Conditions & Intimidation
o I was explicitly told that if I refused to pay the additional charges, I would have to find my own way back to the airport because their shuttle service was only available for renting customers.
o This left me with no viable alternative but to comply with their excessive fees in order to avoid being stranded.
o My partner was so intimidated by the aggressive demeanor of the staff that she was fearful to return to the loction, even suspecting ties to organized crime.
5. Forced Toll Pass Rental & Overcharges
o I was forced to use Green Motion’s SunPass/E-ZPass at $20 per day plus tolls, despite having my own valid transponder.
o This charge was never disclosed prior to arrival and was not optional.
6. Failure to Provide Reliable Service & Retaliation Concerns
o Upon returning the vehicle on Sunday morning at 8:15 AM, the rental office was closed, leaving me stranded and forced to take an Uber to the airport to avoid missing my flight.
o Due to the ongoing dispute with my credit card company over fraudulent charges, my partner now fears potential retaliation from Green Motion.
Resolution Sought
I am requesting the following actions be taken immediately:
1. Full Refund of all additional and fraudulent charges, including forced insurance, deposit fees, and toll transponder fees.
2. Investigation into Green Motion’s predatory practices, particularly their refusal to honor third-party protection plans, exorbitant security deposits, and ADA violations.
3. Expedia’s Accountability in promoting a deceptive business without proper vetting. I requested a full refund from Expedia for misrepresentation and failure to ensure consumer protection.
4. Public Awareness & Further Action – If no resolution was reached, I have escalated this complaint to the Better Business Bureau (BBB), the Florida Attorney General’s Office, and relevant consumer advocacy organizations.
This experience caused significant distress and financial harm, and I urge you to take immediate action to rectify the situation.
Sincerely,
NEVER RENTING FROM GREEN MOTION AGAIN
