Between 12/11/23-12/19/23, I have requested a shingles vax 3x from my doctor and have been declined each time. According to the doctor, I am a healthy 33 year old so I do not fit the CDC's criteria to receive the vax. However, I am a nursing mother. My baby was 3 months old when I got the shingles. He is 8 months now and is still primarily breastfed. My baby who has an underdeveloped immune system is at risk for an infection and any other potential health complications. During my bout of the shingles,
when I was in and out of appointments, one of the Kaiser staff informed me that I would be able to receive a vax, solely on the basis of having got the shingles under 50 years old. But now I'm being repeatedly rejected and told by my doctor that that doesn't fit the criteria. The inconsistency is misleading and infuriating. In addition to getting the shingles vaccination, I need someone to explain the scientific rationale as well as the health care policy reasoning behind not getting the vaccination unless over 50 years or are immunocompromised.
