We bought a new car on 03/15/2025. The car was from out of state so it was never inspected. The car was very nice. Like brand new. A Mercedes Benz. I had ten days to get the car inspected, and was going to be working 7 days a week 16 hours a day for a couple months starting a week after we bought it. Mavis in Towanda PA 18848, was the only inspection shop we could get in before the outage started. My wife scheduled the first appointment she could get. 03/22/2025 at 11:00 hrs. Only 1 1/2 days before I needed it road ready. So I inspected the car myself to make sure all they would have to do is put the sticker on it, after looking at it. At 12:30 hrs on 03/22/2025 I asked my wife if they were done inspecting it. She said "no, they had been working on it for over an hour." Then around 13:00 hours she said they were done. I told her that the inspection was $27 plus taxes. She replied that they were charging her $138.84. I said no thats wrong, don't pay that. I asked what the charges were and she said the inspection, shop supplies, Labor, and $50 dollars apiece for 2 windshiled wiper blades. I told her that the wiper blades on it were new Mercedes Benz wipers. They worked great, better than anything Mavis sells, and are only $22 each. So I asked her to bring my old wiper blades home with her. When she got home I inspected my original blades again and they still looked like new. Not wanting to jump to conclusions since I am not licensed in Pennsylvania inspection laws, I went to my neighbors who is licenced and has an active business. (He did not have any openings before I needed the car or I would not be writing this now.) I asked him to inspect the wipers for me to see if there was something I missed. He said they looked good, but had to clear any water from the windshield in 3 strokes. He said that was probably the reason they replaced them. So I asked him to reinstall my original Wipers on the car and see if they worked good enough to pass inspection. Since it was his day off I paid him $50 for his labor and time. He changed the wipers and sprayed the windshield turned the wipers on and they cleared the glass in one pass. Just like they did two days previous when it was raining on my way to work. He said the wipers work just like new, as they always had. So armed with this information I drove back to Mavis on the golden mile in Wysox. I thought after showing the manager that my old wipers were like new, and I never used the ones thay installed he would take them back and refund the money he charged me for them. Boy was I wrong. He must have seen me pull in with the car, because before I could even say anything he was very aggressive and defesive. Stating he knew who I was and the wipers did not clear the window in more than 5 passes. I tried to expain to him that The old wipers were on the car, and if he would just walk outside he would see that they clear the window completely in one pass. But instead he cut me of and loudly proclaimed that there was no need for him to look at them, because he already did. (The inspectors name on the sticker was not his, so I am not sure why the manager would be looking at the wipers while someone else inspects the car.) But I again tried to ask him if he would let me return the wipers, and once again he cut me off raising his voice and threatening to call the police on me. I again tried to explain to him that i just got off the phone with my cousin who had his car there at the same time with the same results. My cousin stated that he would never ever do business there again. I was hoping not to go that route. Then the manager once again cut me off and started yelling at me as he got his phone out. "Thats it I am calling the cops right now!" So i got in my car and left. Like my cousin. I will never step inside a Mavis store again. I told my neighbor if that happens again I will just drive illegal until he can get me in. It's cheaper even if I get caught. This inspection cost me $200 and 3 hours of driving plus not getting my chores done that I needed to do before I start the crazy long hours. Plus the insults and accusations on top of that. By far the most expensive and aggravating, harrassing state inspection I have ever had. I have had much more pleasant audits with the dept of Revenue. Never Again.
Recommendation: avoid at all costs
