I am not at all happy with North star alarm company. North star alarm make it so hard to cancel there service no one will help you they just keep billing me. I had northstar alarm service for years I am still being billed after after I cancel my north star alarm service. and north star alarm keep renewing my contract every year without my knowledge.
Desired outcome: cancellation of alarm service and stop my billing.
Contract cancellation - acct # [protected]
We have completed our 5 year contract with northstar and notified the company more than 90 days ago that we wished to cancel. They claim we have not contacted them and are trying to auto-renew for an additional 18 months. I am reporting their charges as fraud to our credit card company. Do not do business with these people. Read the hundreds of complaint...

I opened the door to a Northstar Alarm Salesman. BIG mistake. I listened and fell into the trap purchasing a security system from him.
I wanted to protect myself from thieves breaking into my home. What I found that the thieves I should have protected myself from were those running Northstar Alarm in the amount 0f $67.71 per month for 5 years. No upfront cost of materials and installation seemed to be a good deal.
At first I thought I had a neat system. I was impressed by the doorbell replacement which had a camera with the ability to record and converse with anyone at my front door on my cell phone. My deadlock key was replaced by a touch key lock. I started setting my new system, but stoped setting it because of false alarms. Police started billing me for false alarms. I started getting motion sensed alarms from my doorbell camera when the wind blew and moved the branches on my bushes. I attempted to fix this but as a result lost this due to changes I made to settings. Notices were setoff by system for low battery and lock door sensor in my workshop. These were set off in the middle of the night. After complaining to Northstar, I got information needed to silence the system. After putting up with this I spoke to company representatives describing what was going on. I was sent a battery pack and another door sensor for me to do the replacement. This is not covered by them. The battery pack was not the same as the battery on the system. The replacement sensor was also different than that was on door.
I asked them to cancel their services. I was told that I have a five year contract which I am obligated to complete.
$67.71 x 12 = $812.52 per year. $812.52 x 5 = $4, 062.60. This is the cost of listening to this Northstar Alarm salesman.
I finally found this place where I can complain and hope that others will not fall into the same predicament I find myself in. If there is a way I can sue Northstar Alarm, I would in a minute.
Response from tech support
We've been with NorthStar for several years. Recently I had smoke coming out of my oven, no fire. The alarm went off and they called my cell phone which was on mute. They confirmed that they did not follow protocol which was to contact me over the intercom. They deployed the fire department and now I have a bill for $850 from the city. If they had followed protocol and simply called me over the intercom, I would have told them not to deploy them. I've contact them at least 3 times via phone and 4 emails requesting them to handle the bill and they won't respond to any of my requests, not even a NO.
If they don't handle this bill, I will cancel.

They will not allow you to cancel. I signed up over 5 years ago, called to cancel last year and they told me I had a 5 year contract, fine. Sold the house and called back at 63 months and they said it automatically renews for an 18 month extension and I need to send a letter 60 days prior in order to cancel so I owe for 5 more months. Would not put a manager on the phone, then told me I threatened them so they would not talk to me. I asked what I threatened them with and they hung up on me. Avoid this scam company using predarory contracts!
Cancellation of Service
Unlike other people on this site I did know that I had signed a 5 year contract however given that I don't have a crystal ball I didn't know that life would change in 18 months.
We sold our house and I called them to tell them that I would not be using their service anymore and wanted to cancel. In response I was given three different options
Relocate the service to my new residence . Not an option as we are staying with family who already have a system
Try to get friends or neighbors or the new owners to take it over . No chance, I don't work for Northstar.
Pay out the entirety of the contract .
It seems that if you sell your house and have no further need of their system you have no choice but to continue to pay for something you no longer have or want. I had no such problems when cancelling my power, my water, my gas but it seems I do have it when it comes to a redundant and worthless security system. To be frank any company that believes they can tie people to a contract for something they don't have a use for nor live in the property is delinquent on a host of levels
The word Charlatan comes to mind
My immediate response was to cancel my payment to them, I have not done that yet for fear of these people attacking my credit rating but it is still in the forefront of my mind. Any advice would be helpful
Thank you
Sorry for late comment, however...If you want to cancel your contract do it WELL in advance of the 60 day WRITTEN notice they require. If you don't do it within 60 days they will automatically extend your contract for another 18 months without your approval other than a initials you did when they went over that section on your contract as fast as they could. (It's also in very small print so very easy to miss). But as you said charlatan is a wonderful word for this company. Good luck and hope all worked out well for you.
Alarm system
The company is awful and DO NOT care at all about their customers! I have been a loyal customer for 7 years and have gotten treated like crap by The employees. I went 7 months with the company having the wrong address down on my file, so in the case of an emergency they would have sent emergency responders to my old address, which could have been tragic!!...

fcc#[protected] tech aren't skilled. service never worked correctly cameras never online. tech made us uncomfortable. told us he come out later no charge. called later was a 99 charge in July. if error on company side no charge. charged applyed 3month later unauthorize keep threating to place on credit. bank reverse charge, they charge it again Dec.
customer service, application, overall system
I have moved to a different state and have call numerous times to have my service moved. This company will not call you back. We have done the web chat and called and left messages. When I did finally talk to someone weeks later they can not help me, they just transfer me to another department which goes to voicemail. Does a follow up call ever come, NO. I could get no answer as to whether I would take my system with me when I moved, finally over a week after I moved they said you are suppose to take it with you, since you didn't you have to sign another 5 year contract. I said nope not happening, you all can not call me back or follow through with anything. You app doesn't work half the time, you doorbell camera doesn't work and you can't talk to anyone that is at your door. I wanted to talk to a supervisor, manager or even the CEO. They said that they are trained to answer any questions, I then repeated I wanted to talk to a supervisor or manager. Nothing happened except she transferred me to another department which went to voicemail. I am still waiting for them to call me back 24 hours later, which I know they will not.
I will not pay any cancellation fees to this company. I even fold them I could get access to the house for one day, they said it will take weeks before they can get a Technician there to remove the old system. I said you have one day as the house is being sold and closing is the following day. After this they transferred me and that guy said he would help bit then he transferred me to another department again which, you guessed it, it went to voicemail. No call back still.
I do not recommend this company to anyone that wants an alarm or security system.
home alarm system
The issues started when the tech did the install. Apparently he tripped over a gas line in my attic and caused a leak. They refused to pay for it even though I insisted the tech call and let them know what happened.
The sales person told me I didn't need to register my alarm system with the city. Well, he was wrong and I got a $250 fine when the alarm malfunctioned while I was out of town.
Later, my thermostat malfunctioned and they refused to replace it unless I paid to have an hvac inspection proving it wasn't a system issue.
Then, for several reasons I was told that I could cancel. I called and emailed in feb. They came to my home and uninstalled the system. So I assumed everything was fine. I get a new system and then several months later they call and say I actually can't cancel unless I pay like $12, 000 or some crazy amount. I've gone back and forth with them. They did agree to waive the monthly fees accumulated from the time of cancellation until they reached out to me but they have not stopped harrasing me. And are threatening to report me to collections.
contract
My mother recently died and I am moving to her house because it is in a better town and neighborhood and the house was left to me and paid for. My home I was purchasing as a single mom. I called North Star to cancel my service, I was informed I'm in a 60 month contract till 2023 and an adendum since Feb. 2017, I was not aware of that the tech came by and said he needed to replace a box and add a carbon monoxide detector. I was not told that I was extending anything. The lady I spoke to today said I could move my service which I do not need where I moved to or pay early termination fee of 3, 035.00! I called the bank to stop drafts immediately! I have other family and friends that experienced the same thing with these contracts, its wrong!
northstar alarm security system fail
During a storm in my hometown on July 21, 2018, we experienced a power outage. For various reasons, I had to break into my house through a window to gain access. Between 8:00-9:00 p.m. CDT I called the Tech Support line to alert them that it was me breaking in and to ask them to notify the police or fire department not to show up. No one answered the Tech line.
When we struck the window and the glass shattered no NorthStar Alarm bells or whistles sounded. There was a weak beep beep beep from the alarm system panel at the opposite end of the house. NorthStar didn't call me to verify a breech or to guarantee my safety.
I called to complain, my first complaint in the eight years I've been with the company. I questioned whether I had been monitored at all over the years. The supervisor, Julianna, explained that the back-up battery only lasts 6-8 hours. I told her that was unacceptable because it would be a prime opportunity for someone to break into my home and the alarm company needed to do something different.
I also told her that I want to cancel my service this Fall when my contract is up. She then told me that I had signed on until 2021. I denied that claim and went on to detail my reasons why my contract is up this year. She said she would look into the matter and call me back. She did not. I called for her again. She was off that day but the woman, Kirsten, who answered the phone said she would personally email Julianna and ask her to call me. Julianna did not return my call. I called yet again, only to be told that she couldn't take my call and that she would call me the next day, Saturday, August 18, 2018. Once again, she did not.
The alarm service was an epic fail on July 21, 2018, and I want to talk to someone with authority to cancel my service at the end of my contract in Fall 2018. Julianna needs to be fired for ignoring and arguing with a customer, especially one who has contracts and emails to document her claims.
NorthStar is obviously not the same company that I once trusted.
unethical sales tactic
This sale was accomplished through aggressive sales tactics on June 13, 2018 by salespersons Mark Kristopherson and Nick Larson. The salespersons presented at the residence late evening on June 13, 2018 without prior notice, invitation or an appointment. They provided a sales pitch to an elderly person even though she informed them that she already had a security system. They remained in her residence until approximately 11:00pm; at which time she felt pressured by the salespersons to sign a contract and purchase their security system. They also installed the equipment before she was ready.
product and services
I am a new homeowner and I made the biggest mistake when I open my door to a salemen who pressure me to signing a 60month contract for NORTHSTAR ALARM. so far the only biggest mistake i have made when it comes to purchasing my home is my Alarm service please do not make the same mistake. I was offered free equipment which include 2 panel, camera, sky-bell camera, glass breaker sensor and alot more. The sales rep tried to pressure me into doing a review 2-7 days after installation by text messages and phone call, begging and pleading for a 5 star review. I told him that I can not do a review on something I have not used. My question is that what is the purpose of having all this equipment If i have to keep calling for it to be fixed. I have had tech come out to my please more than 10times in he past 9 months. I have to call may be 4 time just to get one visit and when they come issue is not fix. I get tired of calling sometimes because i feel like it is a waste of time. Because When you contact them, you will have to wait 2 business days for a tech to call you back to schedule to come out to your home. Please do not get stuck like be I did not do my research and just went with the artist they sent to my door. Do not get stuck with crappy equipment and terrilble customer service. This company is not worth it, and if you get great service or not, if you equiment works or not they automatially take money out of you account and if you cancel they charge you for the lenght of time your contract is. If I really have the money I will love to pay them off so I can go with a better sercurty sytem because I really need it. I work night's and have having a secure home that you are paying monthly service to is a just a nightmare. this is my first time ever doing a review on BBB and I will make sure I spread this reveiw to any and all website i can find.
didn't pay the early termination bill from my contract with adt
Mike Long representative with North star came to my home and i signed up to receive their service. Mike wrote in my contract to pay me out of my contract with ADT which he has not. I have caught him in the neighborhood several times and he always promises to bring the payment back but he never does. The bill is only $25.97. Now if they lie about a bill so small you know they will not pay anything larger. I received a call from [protected] and spoke with a man that say he was with north star with a British accent. He was so rude and arrogant. I had to hang up on him. One of his coworker called back from the same number and he was also rude. I told him i would cancel my contract with them due to them not honoring their own contract znd he told me to go ahead that he would charge my account for an early termination amount. I told him if he charge my account i will take legal action against them. This is written in my contract that they would pay me out of my old contract with ADT. I will not reccomend northstar to anyone because they say one thing and do another. To anyone reading this, do not get into contract with north star. They are very nasty to their customers and very rude. Im telling everybody not to do business with them. I cant believe their customer service.
mike long was my representative with your company
Mike Long came and signed me up for your service. He promised to pay my early termination agreement I had with Adt. This is also in my contract that he would pay my early termination agreement with Adt. The first time I contacted him about the amount due were 05/8/18 and I also sent him copy of the bill. Each time he would say he will pay it but as of today he has not payed anything The second time I texted him and sent copy of the bill was 05/17/18. He has been back out dropping off signs that goes in the yard and again he states he will bring me a check back and again, he hasn't done it. Im gonna cancel my service because he has not honered the contract. He put this In the contract that he will bay my early termination payment. I need this taken care of as soon as possible and I need for him to honor the contract. I would appreciate it if he w ould go ahead and pay this bill as soon as possible as it already pass due. The bill is only $25.79. If I have to pay this I will can my contract with you due to breach of contract. Sincerely Bonnie Williams [protected]. Mike number is [protected]. Thanks.
I am moving to a retirement home and they won't cancel my contract
I am moving to a retirement center because i am 80 years old and need to be where i can get help if i need it and northstar won't let me cancel my contract. My retirement center has sent two different sources explaining me moving there as of today i turned this company into the attorney general. This incident happened 11/24/17. I have had this service for two years and i need to go to this retirement center for my health. My name is rose austin. My e-mail address is; [protected]@att.Net. My phone number is [protected]. When i signed up with this service they told me if i moved to a retirement home it would not be a problem to cancel my contract. If i have to i will get an attorney. I would appreciate your feedback.
Hi Rose.
Instead of relying upon what you remember being said, you want to rely what is in the signed contract. As for a copy of said contract, signed by you. Then read the details for yourself.
Please let us know what you find out.
alarm cancellation
NorthStar Alarm Company based in Utah- Is a prejudice, discriminate against black people, I have never been treated this badly by a company, stay away please! This is a horrible company to do business with, this country is going through hell right now to fight prejudice and bigotry, this company is embracing it by defrauding an older black woman, I know if I was white I wouldn't be treated this way. How can you people sleep at night knowing you people trained your sales people to be shady and deceitful and especially rip off vulnerable black woman. I went through the internet, google your company found out I was not the first one your company was deceitful to. This is wrong, where is your conscience, where is your integrity, I understand you have a business to run, you don't have to rip off old black women to get rich, God will judge your company.
On June 11, 2017 Aaron Wagstaff and his crew was in my neighborhood, selling Alarm Service, I invited him into my home, heard the presentation, I like what I was told about the company, he ran my credit told me he could offer this service only if I had A1 credit. I was told I can sign up for 12 months, I need to call prior to 12 months or the contract would be renewed automatically. I did as I was advised by the sales person (Aaron Wagstaff [protected] that's his phone number). When I informed the customer service rep I want to discontinue my service with the company, because I was not pleased with the service I am receiving, I was told I had to pay$4200.00 to get out of the contract, because I signed the contract for 42 months, I do remember signing the electronic contract, I trusted Aaron, he told me the documents I was signing electronically is the same as the paper ones I signed. I believed him, because I was looking at the documents I signed.
I had no reason not to believe the sales person, I was shocked, upset to learn I was duped into signing contract for an alarm company for 42 months. Who does that, this is unethethical, not good business practice, and This Company should be upfront and transparent.
EBERIGA
Northstar Alarms- Poor service, cancel contract.
When I agreed to sign up with Northstar I had agreed to a 36 month contract.
During that time I had many issues with the service, the Skybell camera wouldn't work many times, it effected my
doorbell where it was hard to hear.
I ca;;ed to cancel after 30 months of service and they informed me that I had a 60 month contract and I would have to pay $2, 100.00.
Customer service is terrible and equipment is inadequate!
alarm system
On June 2016 I moved to a new house and since them I am calling their customer service line to schedule the move of the system. Nobody from the local installation team ever calls me and I get no system (but I get a bill).
I tried to cancel the contract but they want to charge me more than 2000 for it. But if they can't install the system in my new place why should I stay with this company? They are not serious on their business.
home security service
Northstar alarm has recently been cited in the Indianapolis area by the Indiana Attorney Generals office for taking advantage of senior citizens. Unfortunately I am a victim. I paid as agreed on my contract until 8 months before it ended when a company rep apparently watched me come home from work then banged on my door before it could close completely saying there was a problem needing discussion. He told me Northstar decided to upgrade to 4G and unless I paid half the cost to upgrade my house Northstar would no longer monitor my home. I refused to pay for their upgrade and stopped payments to them since they were breeching the contract. Now they have the nerve to try and collect the payments when they did not provide servicesagreed upon. WARNING WARNING WARNING ABOUT DOING ANY BUSINESS WITH THEM! I found out about them 3 yrs into it but they still got me.
2-2-21
I cancelled my contract in July, 2020 thru their website. The rep Tanner Williams Confirmed they had my cancellation email. They figured what I ordered and I paid $223.96. Authorization #03026c. I believed matter ended. Now receiving calls and texts harassing overdue charges.
Last week mailed copies of my notes taken during call to North star and BBB. Still receiving calls.
With any company one assumes the rep is accurately entering conversation into records. I now question if this happened. Otherwise there would be no question I had cancelled and paid.
North star is thoroughly disreputable and they operate like a mafia shakedown organization.
