In the month of September I was charged overdraft fees for a 57cent item on my account and a $3.55 item on my account. This came to a total of $70 in overdraft fees. That also led to us being charged another overdraft a few days later. I spoke with a Christina Owens in customer service and explained the minor situation and asked her what the chances were that she could help me out. Her response, "zero to none" I was lit up and let this person have a piece of my mind. I then spoke with a customer service manager after many tries to explain how poor their customer service was. She was wonderful and apologetic and seemed to be the only person that had any sympathy with my situation. This was not resolved but I was satisfied that at least I had someone that understood my situation.
BB&T has changed their policy on overdrafts effective Jan. 1st. I showed up at the local branch to discuss the issue. The branch manager Amy Hildebrandt was rude and disrespectful and would not even admit that their was a change in policy and kept referring to the current policy but wouldn't admit that the policy had changed.
She stated she knew nothing about it. I was insulted by her demeanor.
I then ask for the number of a supervisor and she stated that person was Mildred Elliot, the branch operations manager. I asked for her phone number but Amy stated that she was in and out of branches all week. I explained that if she was a person to get hold of she must have a phone number where I could leave a message. Amy finally conceded there was a phone number and she gave it to me.
I then came home and called Mildred Elliot to leave a message. I also looked up the article I found online that was in a Winston-Salem newspaper. Being a lover of sarcasm and feeling that I was being lied to by Ms. Hildebrandt I called and left her a message as to where she could find the article as I thought she should be informed of her banks policies.
I received a phone message from Ms. Elliot returning my call but I am a teacher and I was unable to get to the phone. I gave her some available times that she could contact me. That was a Tuesday and I had not heard from her all week after that. I called on Friday afternoon and she was available. I asked her why her own branch manager wouldn't know about a new policy change and got a round about way of being told that the policy was not in effect yet and they have all kinds of policies. This didn't answer my question and I then asked her to answer my question. She said it's obvious that I wasn't happy. I stated that I really get tired of the double talk and passing the buck when it comes to discussing the resolution of these fees. She ended up hanging up on me when I insisted on getting an answer to the questions that I was asking. She stated that she had answered the questions to the best of her ability. She then stated that she was ending the conversation. I kept her on stating I had not been rude and expected some customer service. She just hung up.
I then got home to receive the kicker. A letter from a person who I spent 20 min. on the phone with stating that my accounts were being closed with absolutely no explanation as to why they were being closed. I went to the branch manager Amy Hildebrandt who just played dumb and stated that the letter was from the operations manager. I said, "yes, the same person I asked you about the other day. It is obvious that you are aware for the reason for this letter. You really shouldn't play dumb with customers, it's disrespectful." She stated, "well maybe it's because you keep asking about the overdraft policy." She was no help at all and I just realized she was a monster ### and I wasn't going to get anywhere speaking with her.
So here I sit with bank accounts that are being closed against my will. Probably the best thing that has happened so far. I feel like the mob has come in and run this bank. This is well beyond loan sharking but I bet a guy named Vinnie from Brooklyn would treat you with more respect.

Credit card payment options
In reading all of the posts here regarding BB&T bank, I am glad I'm not alone in the troubles I have gone through with this terrible bank. For the same reasons many people have shared here, I have closed my checking and savings accounts with BB&T...but not my Credit Card! What a mistake, I'm finding now. I can't get away from their money-making schemes. I'll explain:
First things first, they call relentlessly if you're 5-days past due. No trouble, I can appreciate the reminder! I'd be much less likely to mention that part if it didn't make them out to be greedy pirates. I was just called 3 times in the last 6 hours! I also asked them not to call my work number, and low and behold that's where the first voicemail was left!
On the phone, the nice North Carolinian gentleman explained that I was overdue and asked if I could pay. No problem, I let him know I was at a computer and can pay online as I know it is free to do so. I'm paying a little more than is due at this time, he appreciated that and informed me there is a $2 fee for payment from a BB&T account, and $5 from a non-BB&T account (over the phone. Not necessary information at the time, but important later). After hanging up, going online, struggling to find a way to input my bank information for the payment, and finally calling customer service in frustration, I WAS TOLD BB&T NO LONGER ACCEPTS ONLINE PAYMENT FROM NON-BB&T ACCOUNTS. THUS, forcing me to pay the $5 fee over the phone. I asked "why", to which her response was "BB&T changed its policy regarding bill payments from outside accounts in April of this year". Thank you CS Rep, my feelings of confusion have been assuaged! Brings me back to when mom said: "because I'm your mother, that's why!".
Do I really have to be COMPLETELY done with you BB&T?! I thought you'd have changed by now! You just got 3.1 B from the government! You've almost made that much money on your patrons alone!

Let somebody withdraw my money without proper id
The bank let somebody (Tony Jones and probably an accomplist) withdraw my money 400.00 dollars at a time until it was gone. They stole checks out of my check book, wrote the checks out to themselves by either by forging my name and or having my stolen ID. They cashed my stimuls check too, either at the bank or at a pawn shop. Tony was the only one in my room while I was gone, When I came in he was in my room, I realized later that my check was missing. anyway I had over 20, 000.00 dollars taken from my account and the bank would not help because I did not have ID, I TOLD THEM what happen, they should have checked regardless of me having ID or not, I presented my checking account and my personal information. I just did not have picture ID. WANT my moeny back, after I got my ID, They told me it has been past 90 days and they could not help me, they close my account because it was not only emplied, it was overdrawn. I had given up after the police could not help, somebody told me to use this approach. All my money from ft bragg ITT was direct deposited there for 5 years.

I know about this person Tony, he left NC because of people started to ask questions about the money he had, and the things he was buying, He asked Mario have he reported them yet, At the time Mario did not know the money was missing until he went to withdraw money only to find that it was all gone. Tony was Mario child hood friend that went bad, Mario could not believe it was Tony because tony kept coming by picking him up and keeping him close.

Debt my account
I checked my account online today and discovered a debt amount of $331.00 to BB&T telephone payment? I never called and gave anyone permission to take that money out of my account. When I called I was passed around and then finally got a lady named Renee from the Recovery Department and she told me that it was for an overdraft from the year 2002! Seven years ago! I did't have an account with BB&T in 2002 I closed my account with them in 2000 which I even got a check for and opened a new account with another bank which to my bad luck BB&T bought in 2006. They have never tried to reach me and rude Renee said that they didn't have to that I signed a contract. Then she gave me another phone number to call which of course I got someones voice mail and won't be holding my breath for them to return my call. As far as I'm concerned THEY STOLE MY MONEY I called customer service again and that person told me that I would have to go to one of the branch offices which means taking time off from work because BB&T is not open past 5pm or on the weekends. I am shocked that they think they can steal the money that you have put in their bank, good thing I had enough in there or they would be getting more money for overdrafts fees that they caused. Once I get this taken care of I will close my account with BB&T again...now I know why I had a bad feeling about them the first time around.

they are all crooks. Close your accounts and go somewhere else. BBT is the worse bank in the world. With the help from a bank employee crook she help my son steal my Mother's cds after she passed away. It won't do any good to try to sue them. They are all crooks. They need to be closed down. I hate them. I don't wish BBT on anyone but the devil. I hope they all pay one day for what they do and done to people. I went threw hell with this bank. I hope they close down. I would love to see that happen. I would make a special trip to laugh in there faces like they did me. I would laugh at that women and the manager and hope they lose everything they have.
You guys are idiots. If you owe money when you close an account they are of course going to get it back. Pay your debts before they have to pay them for you. Just because you close that account before all transactions posted to that account doesn't mean you got away with it. If you OVERDRAFT your account that is your fault and not the bank's. Be more responsible and I would suggest you get a chexsystem report.
I had the same thing happen to me. On 9/22/09 I opened my account to see that $300.61 was taken out of my account in the form of a telephone payment! I called got the runaround by 6 people and finally found out that I had an account with First VA back in 2004 and when I closed my acct I still had a balance and they just decided to take it out here on 9/22/09! I never received no phone call nor a letter! The women from Recovery name June stated that they sent a letter to me in April of 2004 but they were not required to contact me about it! I feel the same as LCLARKE does, they STOLE my MONEY! If I owed it I would have made payments to them. And why after 5 years did they just fine this, why not when I set back up with BBT a year ago? Why was I not contacted? My # is not the same but my PO Box has been the same since 2002! I swear I did not owe them money, I want them to prove it, but when I asked for my contract they said that the time frame had elapsed and they did not have it anymore, ok then HOW CAN YOU PROVED I OWE IT THEN!? I want my DAMN $300.61 back! BBT will SCREW you everytime they can, they are the worst bank and can GO TO HELL! Right of offset my ###!
Account freezing
BB&T, without any good reason, froze my account and refuses to release it.
I sublet an apartment I had in Pennsylvania to a longtime friend. He paid his rent with an automatic online payment system. The account was with an institution based in Utah, which sent a check every week and automatically deducted the amount from his account.
Since April, I have been depositing these checks in my BB&T checking account with no problem. On Aug. 27, a teller placed a five-day hold on two of those checks, totaling $200. Later that afternoon, the branch manager called me, informing me BB&T was placing a freeze on my entire account. The bank security department believed all the checks were fraudulent and would be returned, even though they had cleared and been paid to my account. Today, Sept. 1, with my friend on the line with me, we verified with a representative of his bank that his account is in good standing, that each check was valid, and that each check was paid to BB&T.
The branch manager at BB&T said her security department was more advanced and was going through their own channels. My account will have a hold on it for at least 30 days so thier advanced department can verify what I verified in 20 minutes. Meanwhile, I have no checking account with which to pay my bills.
My friend warned me that he stopped doing business with BB&T because of their arcane rules and disregard to the need of their customers.

I have been used by this bank enough and today i'm finally going to put an end to it. Im closing everything with this bank today and to me it's just not enough. I want to tell my story and maybe help someone else not even start an account with these thieves. Which they truly are, if you have money in a bb&t bank please watch it closely and never I repeat never make the smallest mistake. Because this is their scam, they wait till their customers make a small error in any of their records the second this happens bb&t swoops in and takes as much as they can. It is soooo disguisting. All their employess are trash can # that will have karma hitting them in the back for as long as they continue to work for this bank. It's very serious, these people should get another job. After all this I still haven't told my own story here goes... I overdrafted (Yes I know thats my fault) by less than $2.00... All the sudden i'm in debt to this bank for $108.00. I know how it all works the last time this happened to me I overdrafted by $78.00 (It was a dr. S office and something about holds, more bb&t crazy circle talk) and was in debt for over $300.00. Anyway this last time I overdrew by $2.00 and they stole the rest of money and they the big kicker they blocked my card without contacting me. So I was trying to buy groceries for my family at walmart. Standing there having just got paid with my $105.00 dollar bill. My card is denied... I call the 1-800 number first they hang up on me, then I 'm told that I have togo the branch bank to get the block off... Are you kidding me I could have lost it right there... Is that what they are trying to do? Make people lose it? Thats scary I don"t want anything to do with this bank for as long as I live... So in the end I have to leave my whole cart of food at the register and drive to bank, when I get there they don't give half a # and they only have one lady who can take the block off my card and she's mysteriously disappeared in their 2 room bank... Hahahahahahahaa. Suffice to say I didn't get to close my account or take the block off that day... Truly a horror story I should have gotten out the first time I found out they where such cheats... I also told the branch manager that there were all kinds of bad things about the bank on the internet,, and she said what where?.. I said google it... She said hahaha well thats just the customers, we're number 1... I could have died right there... You don"t mean a thing to bb&t they just wait around till they can get their hands on your money and I hate to say it, but eventually they will get it.. They do not care about you at all...
Amen. BB&T has less than 5% of their employees in Charlotte NC that have been with their organization as long as I have been. After having the worst customer service and longest wait times in making deposits at the poorly managed Woodlawn Rd Branch for months and zero response to my complaints, I decided to use my cell phone camera to document the lack of effort by the staff nor concern of it's customers I found myself banned from coming back to that BB&T location. Stephanie Walker the branch manager would rather run off customers that are concerned enough about improving the banks performance than actually listening to her customers and trying to make her branch better for the consumer. Poor management made banks fail and need tax dollars to survive and this is one piece of management, Stephanie Walker, that illustrates how BB&T doesn't give a hoot about their customer base,
Scam charges
I have been with BB&T for over 10 years...They charged me the $35.00 fee for paying my home loan down below $25, 000.00... The people at the local branch took the charges off because I knew them, but I was told because I had such a low banking relationship with them I had to pay the fee... I then started paying an extra monthly payment for my home loan in addition to my regular payment and they charged me a late fee for my regular payment because they did not take out my regular payment because of the overpayment I made… My payment is and was set up as automatic… I hate this bank and as soon as I get my home loan paid I will NEVER, NEVER… bank with them again...

This isn't a "scam". It's the type of account you have that required a loan or deposit balance over a certain amount.
The only "complaint" I'd have is that they didn't offer to switch your account type to one with lower balance requirements.
Overdraft fees and posting times
I have been with BB&T for almost 10 years now and I will be closing my account by the end of the week. I typically get paid every other Thursday seeing that my depost hits the pending transaction on Wednesday and then posts on Thursday morning. But over the last 3 pay periods, I've noticed that my direct depost hits the pending transaction on Thursday and then posts now on Friday. Is this illegal? On just this last go-around, they slammed me with overdraft fees because of the way they lined up my debts and credits in conjunction with moving the pending transaction and posting forward by 24 hours. When I went to the bank to reconcile, the teller first said that I didn't need to see anyone in charge and that she could answer my questions as to why this time-table has been moved forward by 24 hours. Her reply back was that it's on my organization's side and not BB&T. After further investigation, my organization has nothing to do this. This lady lied through her teeth to me. Thanks Kennesaw, GA branch - you just lost another customer.

I am repeatedly charged overdraft fees by BB&T and have complained directly to my branch. Their response, the system cannot credit deposits in the same process and a debit. This means they are quick to debit your account but very very slow in making credits to your account. End result - if you make a deposit and a debit on the same day, the debit will be charged to your account but for some reason BB&T cannot apply the credit. This results in an overdraft fee. Profits for BB&T.
BB&T needs to explain this.

Absolutely, it is infuriating... the way they re-arrange things is absolutely fraudulent. I had one $8 charge that overdrafted my account by $7 or so. OK, so $35 overdraft charge, big deal, right?
Wrong! They took my last 12 purchases and rearranged them so that the $8 overdraft encompasses 4 charges instead of 1. Now I'm -$180- freaking dollars in the hole in NSF and account balance fees. Now I'm gonna have to drop a week of pay to get my account out of the red.

Overcharged
I opened a new account online at bbt.com. I had overlooked the rule that they only allow the first $100 of a check for deposit available on the same day. So, I deposited my dad's SSI check and wrote him a check for it because it was HIS money. Well, his check beat my availability of funds and I was charged $35 NSF fees along with $70.00 NSF fees for 2 other checks it caused to bounce because they force paid it anyway. They would not give me a courtesy refund even though I was a new customer. So, they lost this customer and I want people to know they are not easy to work with. I have never heard of such crazy rules at a financial institution before.

BB&T preys on its customers. They purposely post debits before credits although they are aware that there are credits to be posted to create overdrafts. My payroll check is deposited every other Thursday night, and the are aware of the amount before I am. It is nothing less than criminal to charge overdrafts just for the sake of fattening their pockets.
I originally banked with Bank of Louisville before it was bought out by BB&T. I loved the customer-friendly service I received at Bank of Louisville. Since bought out by BB&T, I've had nothing but trouble. I spoke with an officer the local BB&T after completing a survey and complaining about the unethical overdraft practices. She basically said to get over it because that was the policy.
I informed her that I would be closing my accounts with BB&T, and all she could do was warn me that all banks were implementing the same policy. That let me know that she knew that it was unethical, but because others were doing it, right or wrong, BB&T would follow suit.
Cash is always good...right?! Not according to BB&T! I intentionally went to Suntrust to cash my paycheck so that I could make a cash deposit at BB&T to cover bills, etc. I made the deposit on 8/29/08 at 2:05 p.m. thinking all would be fine...the deposit would be credited to my account since there was no 'wait' time on cash. WRONG! The deposit was not credited to my account until September 2, 2008 causing an INITIAL overdraft charge of $420.00!
I immediately called the branch and was told the same old speech about 'deposits made after 2:00 p.m. would not be credited until the next business day'. I understand that with a check, but CASH! I was told that the Manager could not do anything and would get with the Regional Manager for authorization, if any, to refund the fees.
I never heard from anyone that day and low and behold...you guessed it...when I check my account on September 3, 2008 there had been an additional overdraft charge of $385.00 added to the already withdrawn $420.00!
I again called the branch, spoke to the manager, this time in tears. Got the same speech..he was waiting to get a call back and would let me know when he heard something. Never heard anything that day either.
Sooo, I check my balance the NEXT day, September 4, 2008 and OMG! another $315.00 had been deducted for overdraft fees! My husband's entire pay check that had been direct deposited into the account had been totally eaten up! I called the branch again, same story, never heard so I went to the branch. Unbelievably, I got the same story.
Long and short, I sit here right this minute STILL waiting to hear whether or not my life can go on, if I can eat, pay my rent and just have gas to get to work on Monday. I am with ANYBODY and EVERYBODY who would like to start some type of legislation to stop this type of thing from happening to the citizens of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!
Okay, I have banked with BB&T for about a year now. I seem to get an over draft fee or non sufficient fund fee for anything. Today was the last straw! On Monday, November 17th after 2pm I realized that a direct deposit had not shown up in my available balance. I called my local branch to find out more information. I explained I was concerned since I has several checks to go through. I rushed home and deposited a small check from my part time job into the atm to get the $100.00 applied to my balance. I did not get the 100.00. I was worried the entire night. I called phone 24 and the branch and asked if the certain checks had attempted to post or debits. I was told no and I had time before 2pm to deposit money in my account to cover anything that was outstanding. I had a certified check deposited into my account for $2000.00 before 2pm.. There was not a hold. I got a courtesy $100.00. The next morning I found out I was charged $175.00 in over draft fees and $70.00 in nsf fees! I was so angry! I printed out from my online banking where it showed the $2000.00 was credited on November 18th. I was informed only 100.00 was applied to my account since certified checks that are not from BB&T are treating like checks and not considered cash. I asked why the funds were not verified if there were issues regarding certified checks. I was in the bank for 1 1/2 hours and basically was told I would not get my fees back. It seems their system changes to suit how many fees they can charge you. I had the money in my account that would have covered all my checks including the ones I was charged NSF fees. BB&T should be ashamed to state a proud member of the community since 1892. I closed my account and moved to Wachovia. Hopefully it will be a little better.
My husband had to pay for a rental car, and the company put a $300 hold on his BB & T account. He returned the car the next day, and though this was a Friday, the hold should have been released in a timely manner, right? No more than a day or two. Instead the bank held the hold for who knows how long, our laptop cord broke and I was unable to check the account to see the hold released. In the meantime, the bank was busily bouncing checks left and right, because this "hold" on the account wasn't released, and this set up more bounce fees, because the fees totaled $380 the first go round.
Then, because we live paycheck to paycheck, especially this month, because the aforesaid rental was due to brake work that ended up costing $650, and then the transmission went out on the same car, and my husband missed 4 days of work with no way to get there, so of course each and every $10 or $20 debit that we made on the account ended up costing us more in OD fees, so basically we are in a vicious cycle, because yes, we have no money, because we have been fee'd to death, and we still have to put gas in the car so that he can go to work, so that he can pay more in fees.
Yes it is our fault that we didn't stop living as soon as we realized we had paid $945 in fees, but I challenge you to live with no money, having all of your money going to pay the $945 in OD fees, I suppose we should have just sat at home with no food, money or diapers, no gas to get to work, yep, we are total wastrels, and yes we understand that the banks policy is that OD fees discourage OD's, but when the bank charges you a $35 fee each incident, totaling $945 in one month, greatly because it is bank policy to take the largest amount out first, and then down from there, some of these OD fees were on non bank ATM charges of $2.50, so we paid $35 on a $2.50 fee. Some of these fees were the result of automatic payments, I did try to call the company to ask that the automatic payments not be taken out, but they basically told me to go stuff it.
I called the branch manager several times, leaving messages on her machine, and never got a call back. I also wrote to the bank website, basically begging them to please help me break this cycle, and they told me that I was out of luck. They said that they only refund fees if the bank makes a mistake, and as far as they are concerned the hold on the account in the amount of $300 was not a mistake, and the fact that they did not release the hold in a timely manner was not a mistake.
SO yes, to all you out there who feel we got what we deserved due to our reckless spending, and to BB & T who was so understanding of our plight, THANKS! We have $10 in our account to make it through the week, and no money for rent, or utilities, because as soon as we get the next paycheck it needs to go to rent, which means we will have no money AGAIN for the gas and food for the week, which means that maybe we will have to "bounce" something to get through the week, which will mean more fees, and the cycle continues. Yes, I understand it is my fault that I did not check to make sure the $300 hold was released. But if you honestly believe that these practices are fair and balanced, then you have never REALLY lived paycheck to paycheck. I have read some of the less than sympathetic responses to these types of posts, and understand that there are many who take the stance "if you don't have it, don't spend it" but I challenge you to make it through a week with absolutely no money, because the bank fees just ate it all.
Yep, we certainly learned our lesson. My husbands company only does payroll through direct deposit, but I am closing this account and moving to a local credit union, hoping that we will never be stuck in a cycle like this again. I feel that the practice of OD fees and high to low debits does target those of us with lower incomes, because we are the only jerks that ever end up in situations like this. And I remind you, this whole cycle started because of a hold on the account that was not released in a timely manner, and the cycle begets the cycle, because once you have paid a couple hundred dollars in fees, it sets you up for the next week to be that much short, and if you live paycheck to paycheck, you are pretty much out of luck. We have been stuck in a cycle of financial distress anyway, two of the houses we were renting last year ended up in foreclosure due to nonpayment of mortgages by the owners, so three times we have had to come up with first, last and security deposits, eating up whatever savings we had managed to accumulate plus putting a big dent in any future savings, and my husbands company of 5 years went broke, causing a month of unemployment, so our financial situation was tenuous anyway. Reading posts on this and other sites, and reading the replies to some of these posts, I understand that many feel that people in our situation are there because of our own reckless spending practices, but I assure you that we are not spending money simply to be spending it. The vast majority of our money goes to basic household expenses, we do not shop for the sake of shopping, we have not taken a vacation for 7 years, we do not have parties for the kids birthdays, etc etc. I am still wearing socks I bought 17 months ago. I wish that more people would understand that sometimes the people who have the least aren't there because they recklessly spend money, but because it costs money to live.
I recently had around $86 in my account. During the week I made about $84 in purchases on my debit card. Friday I went into my local branch around 4:45 and deposited a check for about $144. The teller told me that a $100 account credit would IMMEDIATELY go through, and then the rest of the check would clear on Monday. Well, apparently "immediately" in the BBT handbook means the next day, because I made a couple purchases over the weekend, then find that my account is being shown overdrawn over $240. Unlike most banks, instead of denying anything that exceeds your account balance, they approve the debit, then charge you an overdraft fee. I went in to my local branch and attempted to resolve this, even telling them that if they would adjust the overdraft due to their telling me the wrong thing, I would gladly pay the resulting overdraft, if there was one. They said that they couldn't refund it. I then get a notice saying that if my account remains negative for over 7 days, a $30 fee will be charged to my account. WHAT!?!? So I called and told them I just received the notice today, and am currently unemployed (I do some work on the side, but am not formerly employed, and have no continuous income). They again told me it was bank policy that they can't do refunds. I already reported them to the BBB, and as soon as this is resolved, I will close my account and never again do business with BBT.
yes i know what you mean bb&t just did the same thing to me and my wife online payment took 7 days they charged my acc and over darft the first day and when we called we were told get over it they stold over 475.00 from uu
BBandT has been increasingly harder to work with and is extremely abusive on there charges and policies. Part of the problem with BB and T is they offer all these free "customer service" tools to help you but they do not tell you the full story. For instance, they offer a daily balance alert, which emails the acct holder their balance. But this info is not correct. They also offer online services where you can see pending transaction. These aren't correct either. Gas is not included in pending and certain debits, like an insurance payment auto debit, are not shown there. If you ever do make a mistake the BB and T policies will really get you. Let's say you use you have $100 in the bank and use your debit card for $10 in gas, $10 meal, and a $10 bill payment. That is all out of your account and you are showing everywhere (at the atm, online, ABD on bbt phone service) a balance of $70. But then that evening a check you forgot, an autodraft, whatever, is taken out for $105. You are now overdrawn, your mistake, 1 overdraft charge as a penalty...wrong! BB &T actually will take that draft and place it in front of the debits of that previous day and overdraft the lot of them! There reasoning is they feel that was a pending payment BEFORE you made those other transactions, so instead of a $39 charge you have a $160 charge. This is FACT, I can unfortunately show it. Other practices you may not know: withdrawing money from an ATM will result in a $39 charge if you are overdrawn. They will not alert you to the issue, they will give you the money and receipt and then charge an overdraft (yes, even at a BBT ATM). Have an issue and need help?, BB and T gives you 2 phone calls a month, free, if you call again you will be charged $2, and yes, that push you to overdraw also. Do you want to have them stop your debit card if you don't have funds, they will not do that either (ask your local manager, company line is: We don't want to return someones mortgage payment and have them lose there house). Best of luck dealing with these guys, but they should be brought up on charges for what they do.

Unauthorized charges
Due to one transaction which to took me over the limit. Each time I used my debit card it was $35.00 with a grand total of $1, 0000.00. Never happen before. They are dragging their feet return the fees. Who has $1, 000 they want to give to a bank like bb&t alpharetta ga, thats rude, racist and lacks coustomer service.
Do not bank with the alpharetta, ga, cumming or suwanne branches... They only favor their golfing friends. Wait until the media gets a hold of this... What bank charges $1, 0000 in nsf fees. What about a courtesy call to the customer? Not bb&t-ripp off — oh, I have also contacted the federal authorities.

I am currently having the same exact problem in Birmingham, AL branches. I even took it to the corporate office and filed a formal complaint with them. I was told I would be contacted within 48 hours with a response. I did not receive a call until 5 days later. Furthermore, the call I received was very short and unfriendly from a secretary of a corporate head who had the nerve to inform me that he had a post it note on his desk when he arrived a the office that morning asking to give me a call and explain the situation.
Before all of this took place, I was forced to visit 2 branches and even then my problem still could not be resolved. The first rep at the branch told me she could not explain the charges because they did not make sense to her and that I needed to visit my opening branch. What is the point of branch banking then? I did not have time, as I do have a job, to drive 45 minutes to my hometown, so I went to another branch in the next city. The rep there told me he did not know how to "simplify it into terms [I] would understand" regarding why they continually charged me overdraft item fees to a positive balance. Then he proceeded to tell me I would not be able "to talk my way out it" so not even to try. I guess that because I am young they believe they can treat me however they wish and assume I am unintelligent. Little did he know I am a student of law who works at one of the southeast's most prestigious plaintiff firms. Better believe I put that rep in his place.
I recently opened another bank account at America's First where the representatives are extremely nice and very helpful. I am closing my account with BB&T tomorrow. As it turns out, there is nothing I can do to get my lost money back. The least they could have done was apologized for the inconvenience of the ignorant, disrespectful representatives. I guess this company is too busy pleasing their prized customers to accomodate the needs of us small-town and apparently dim-witted folks.
I'm am being ripped off every week by BB&T and this is a shame.
I think the Government doesn't intervene when they are benefiting from the fraudulent transactions.
So, lets find out what the Government should be enforcing and sue them for ignoring the facts and allowing the banks to take advantage of us.
If all else fails...lets remove the money from BB&T until we can find a honest institution.

Overdraft fees/posting procedures
I have been unemployed since july of 2008 and have my unemployment check direct deposited into my account. I usually receive this every wednesday, and when I use the phone access to listen to my account balance, it says the amount of the direct deposit will be deposited on that date (Which is usually always a wednesday). This past wednesday, lo and behold the money was in my available balance as usual, and yes there was a negative balance prior to that because I did have overdraft fees previous to the check going in, but it said my available balance was a positive amount. I had heard horrible things about bb&t before, but I thought since my balance was positive I could go ahead with paying bills. Wrong! There were 3 pending transactions that had not gone through even though they had already been taken out of my available balance that posted on the 10th (Last wednesday) that miraculously went through before my check was credited even though that direct deposit should have posted before 2pm that day! Of course I used my card to pay bills, go to the grocery store, etc. And when I checked my balance on thursday the 11th my account was negative -$81. That is because they charged me $105 in overdraft which cost me after paying bills, etc a total of $433! I talked to the bank manager and she said that with that amount of overdraft fees she would have to talk to a "second level manager" because she didn't have the authority to remove such a high amount of fees, even though I told her it was not my fault (But of course in the end they blamed it on me). She told me that if they did take off any fees she would have to block my debit card for at least a month to show me how to "properly manage" my account. That way I would only be able to use checks or cash. I told her it was the banks' fault for allowing customer's to use funds that were not readily available on debit cards, and she told me she could set up my card so it would decline it if the funds were not there immediately, but that would be a hassle because the bank's system would still look at the balance of the previous night, and if it posted anytime on the weekend it would still be the same predicament. Ok, let's fast forward to when she called me back with the "good news" from her second level manager. She told me that they looked at my account, and since I have had overdraft fees at some point during the time I have had the account (Over 2 years), they could refund me $150 in fees but I would still have to pay the remaining $286 in fees, and they would have to close my account! I could not believe it! I have the same thing with bank of america and wachovia, and what I want to say to everyone is beware. Our banking system is hurting so bad that they are teaching their employees to lie and deceive people about how these banks' processing systems work. Not only do I have to pay back these ridiculous exorbitant fees but I have to get a new bank account. My previous overdraft fees were my fault, trying to juggle bills while making $350 a week on unemployment while taking care of a 4 year old. Doesn't anyone out there think this is cause for a lawsuit? Or does this just seem par for the course in this lousy economy and we all (The poor people) just have to eat it while the rich get richer?

omg...seems like all of us are having the same problems..i had no idea.i thought i was getting old and forgot how to add and subtract. turns out i am not the one making mistakes(except for banking with Bandit Banking and Tricks).i think its time to put a stop to them taking our money away from us.
Nock nock, you forget one litle thing, there delivering a service, and they do a damn bad job at that.
Other bills you pay ones a month, thats easy to keep track off, but to keep track of every litle purchase you make a day with the delay that the banks bring in, is something totally different, and there for your compairing makes no sence at all.
Nobody denies it's there own fold, but the bank could implement technicall solutions to solve this by denying overdrafts or at least use reasonable ways of dealing with overdrafts when they happen. (like a x% yearly intrest on the money you overdrawn)
Bottom line there is no justification for charging a 35 fee on fee on fee over a few small purchaces, for me it's unacceptable.
The bank is to store and loan money from, but they act like there the mofo sherif in town with there fees.
You people do not need checking accounts! Since i have had a checking account at the age of 16, i have always been told anything after (insert your banks cut-off time here)on Friday gets processed Monday night, , because banks don't work saturday and sunday nights! duh! Hopefully one day they will, , but if you don't know this simple piece of info then you really don't need an account. Take some "personal responsibility" here. Oh yeah i forgot we live in a world where it's always someone else's fault. Never could be that you don't write anything down. That would be like me forgetting to pay my light bill, and they shut my power off and then I get mad at them for not calling me to remind me to pay my bill? Come on its my responsibility to pay my light bill, If they shut my power off and charge $75 to have it turned back on, , you know what? i shouldn't have been so dumb in the first place. It was MY fault the power got shut off and now my tough lesson is learned and i'm gonna make darn sure to pay my light bill next time.

i had the same thing happen to me recently. when i call them up to complain they said it was my fault because when i transfered funds, it was after 9pm on friday... i transfer 50 dollars on friday but it didnt post til tuesday. The women then proceeded to say bb&t does not despot anything until monday night. ok yeah right. But the funny thing is the item that i bought that caused me to over draft the second time, was bought way before the date that it posted. why was that... when you overdraft sometimes they hold you checks from going through just to see if your going to do it again. does that sound right, no, but its true. So I asked her if i deposited money on Saturday in the actually bank, going inside and physically depositing cash, then I should be fine, right. Wrong! She said you can withdrawn the cash or make a purchase but it wont go through until tuesday morning once again. Does that seem right?

But with the timeframe this bank proceses money transfers it is getting a blury mess, we are consumers, not pro bankers, so why can't the damn BB&T bank make money transfers instant (at least trough there own office) ? why can't they protect my account for overdrafts and block the payments ?
There are technical solutions for it, BB&T chooses to not use them, so what can be the reason ? they make big money by making it difficult for people ?

Online banking fee
Bb&t has a $5. 95 monthly fee if you use any kind of accounting software that automatically updates from their website attached to their "free" checking. They do not tell you upfront about the fee; you will only find it if you carefully read their "online banking disclosure" they give you in the "welcome" pack after you sign up for the account. It may not be fraud legally, but i think it's just dirty. They know that most people are not going to go home and sit down to read that legalese but fail to disclose that their free service is not actually free if you really use it. The fee applies even if you do only online banking (I had no ordered checks, only online transactions except deposits, online statements) . They have a right to charge for whatever services they want; it's the way they go about doing it that's dirty. Will be leaving them as soon as possible and advising others to do the same.

i too have had the surprise of the on line service fee and I only have thank heavens a health savings account with them! Now when I am transferring my HSA to Suncoast Credit Uninion - they charged a $50. transfer fee! And it will take 4 to 6 weeks to get there! Oh my and they wonder why I did not stay with them when they took over Colonial which was my previous bank for years!

BB&T bank refuses to cash a check drawn on their bank without a $5.00 fee if you do not have an account with them. When I complained, the teller had the nerve to ask me if I wanted to open an account with them in order to avoid the fee with a smile on her face. Doesn't this constitute blackmail? money scam
I recently cancelled a transaction that never should have taken place. The money was then refunded to my account by the company, but the bank will not refund my money for the $35 overdraft fee. I do not understand why it is that a mistake was made by another company, and therefore, I have to pay for it. My bank told me that they will not refund my money, because they gave me a loan, even though this never should have happened. I am very upset over this, as I do not have the money to throw away.

Overdraft fees
BB&T on-line banking software is not accurate and is very misleading.
The software BB&T uses on line does NOT display an ending balance. You have a Debit column and a Credit column ~ you do not have an Ending balance column. Instead you have a small window that displays “Available Balance". But this window is NOT accurate.
I also have recently experienced seeing a "Posted Transaction" {which by BB&T description is a paid item} completely disappear from the posted transaction window and then 2 weeks later show up in the "Pending Transaction" window to be paid again.
Not sure how a transaction can be displayed as paid for and funds be deducted from the available balance and then reappear to be paid out again. This software screw up has just cost me $420.00 in overdraft fees. BB&T accepts no blame for this issue and refuses to work with me {their customer} to rectify this issue.
I would suggest that if you are a BB&T consumer that when you bank on line or check your account you take and save screen shots of your on line bank statements. Press Ctrl and Print Screen keys on your key board and save to a Word document with the date. It may save you $420.00.
I will be paying BB&T their overdraft fees and closing my account and they will never ever earn my business again.

Two complaints. A few months ago my acct was compromised. They stole my ATM card and checkbook. The people took checks from someones closed account and deposited them into my account at the teller window. The people took a deposit slip, deposited the check and got cash back from the tellers at two branches. Overdrew my account by $400.00. Now BB&T has declined my theft report and says that I am at fault because my checkbook was NOT SECURED. In my home in my pocketbook as always--not secured? I guess there is no problem with the fact that someone gave cash back to somebody they had to know was not me. I have a senior acct and the thief was like 30 years old.
2. Overdrafts. BB&T is the absolute worst bunch of scammers I have ever seen. Here is how there last scam worked on my acct. I have about $100.00 in my acct. I deposit cash ($300.00) to my account on Friday at 10 a.m. It posts immediately (cash) and reflects in my balance. I go grocery shopping and use my debit card, then go make a few pmts. Monday am I start getting overdraft fees. It seems that my money is NOT in my acct until they post it on their system which took until Weds morning. This cash deposit took three business days to post and here I am collecting overdraft charges the whole time. I want to know how to complain also
They chared me $33.00 for a .26 cent overdrafed. and then said ther was nothing they could do about it.
This bank is the worst they will find away to charge you overdraft fees stay away from bbt, , they put me trough hell they add transactions when it suits them to charge you, , they need a good class actions
They charged me $70 (2x$35), or $0.38 overdraft. They charged me one $35 fee for every week that the account remained negative and since I was out of town, it took me 10 days to go put in the $0.38, well $70.38 by the time they were finished reaching their dirty hands into my pocket. Get your account out of there and advise anyone who has an account there to do the same. They're simply thieves.
I have had the same problem with this issue. My online available balance was $65 so i thought hey i can get some food gas and stuff to last me until my next paycheck. Then i check my online statement the next day and i was charged $340 in overdraft fees...WTF! called the 1-800 number and the branch manager and apparently what i see on my online banking statement is completely different from what they see on their computer. Ummm well no offense i said to the manager but why the hell would the online banking tell me i have $65 when i really dont, and if its not accurate then how is that my problem, maybe it should be more clear. and what really doesnt make any sense is that after they charged me an overdraft fee of $70 the first time my balance only went down to -$9 and some change meaning that they charged me the fee even though i didnt even overdraft. im soooo pissed now my paycheck that gets directly deposited into my account is gone because they charged me $340, and when i did the math on my own i should have only gotten charged 2 overdraft fees, all for like $15 and some change. This bank sucks! I never had this problem with capitol one
I had a similar experience. I deposited a check, bought a sackful of groceries, got slapped with overdraft fee. Coincidentally, I saw a flyer taped to the wall of the drive thru window that mentioned something about increasing revenue from fees. BB&T has left a bad taste in my mouth. What exactly are inactivity fees? It's ridiculous.

I am very familiar with posting direct deposits as i have done this in previous work. First of all when your employer says they "send" your check to the bank of Tuesday, what they are really doing is keying it into the computer. When your employer does this, the reason they "send" it on Tuesday is because its just like a check card purchase in that it takes 2 business days to post. It is a "transaction". Your payroll HAS to know this because you said you get paid on Thursdays. Your employer fully expects you to not get your pay even ONE day early. You are suppose to get paid on Thursday and you do. Your funds are posted and available to you Thursday morning.
Second, , , if you are getting overdraft fees, , i can assure you it is not on anything you initiate on Thursday morning. More likely, its items done prior to Thursday morning, meaning you spent more money than you had prior to Thursday. Go ask your bank to show you actual posting order not just your history transaction list and you'll see.
You cannot go Wed. night to Wal-mart and use your check card, thinking "Oh I get paid in the morning". It use to be credits would always post before debits, , but we are in the 21st century now. Banks know what time you use your card and what time your deposit comes in . And contrary to popular believe, , when you use your check card, it does not immediately "post" to your acct. The merchant only puts a temporary hold on those funds. The hold is released after the first processing night. Meaning that if your trying to use the ATM instead of your check register to keep up with your balance, , your probably goin to have Overdrafts.
Most people who complain about overdrafts, probably 90%, either (a) don't know what a check register is. ( b) have one but do not write everything down, and do not keep a running balance. or (c) Round up and think thats gonna keep them okay.
By the way, , , all banks post at night, , , they all only do it once.

I have dealt with several banks in the past but BB&T has got to be the worse bank I ever had the pleasure of dealing with. I get paid on Thursday's and my payroll department sends them my direct deposit on Tuesday. I need someone to tell my how and why they add the money to my account at 6:00a.m. on Thursday but do not post it to my account until 12:00 midnight Thursday going into Friday. So if I happen to use my debit card anytime on Thursday (which is my actual payday) I automatically get hit with a $35.00 overdraft fee. When I questioned them about this they said they post money to accounts once a day and that is at midnight. So I asked why don't they post my money on Wednesday night at midnight going into Thursday. That way I can access all my money on my actual payday. Because the way BB&T is handling it...it's almost like they have changed my payday until Friday. BB&T bank told me that my payroll deptartment says don't add the money to the account until 6:00a.m. Thursday but when I called my Human Resource Department they told me they never stated that. They told me my money is sent to my bank on Tuesday and they never sent them anything saying don't add to account until Thursday. They also told me this must be a really small bank if they only post once a day and maybe I should consider changing banks. She also told me that some of our other employees that deal with other banks and credit unions have access to there money on Wednesday's after 9:00p.m. Now what kind of mess is this.
Bizar overdraft fees
I just moved from the Netherlands to the US, i opend a checkings account at BB&T, very plesent personal in the office that for sure, this is a big reason to open a account there, but there policy for overdraft fees is unacceptable and i think near criminal.
I deposit some money in the checkins acount and started to use my bank card, i didn't give enough thought about the money in my account so i did 2 transactions of a total $150 over the money i had on my account.
It is my own fault i tride to charge more money then i had on my account, that i will admit instantlly, that i would have to pay intrest on this $150 (couse basiclly it's a loan) that i also understand.
But they dare to charge me $70 over this $150 overdraft, in times where the banks loan money for 0% they dare to charge me near 50% intrest on a couple of days loan (altho they call intrest a fee)
The personal at the local office was very nice again when i confronted them with this and they told me they can do nothing about this, couse this is policy, i think it's near criminal, that 70 dollars is in no way a compairing for this 150 overdraft.
Was looking on the internet to find where i can complain about this and stumbled on this site, had to write of the frustration, i have very lilte patience with big companies that should deliver honest service and not try to bend you over with policies that in no way are fair.
Ok, i've had another one on my sleeves (20 dollars over, 35 fee, mofo) i've canceld my account, i dont understand people accept this kind off mess, do they realize what kindoff yearly intrest they pay with a few mistakes like that. (and i'm not a pro banker, i'm just a consumer living from paycheck to paycheck)
I have to start to look for another bank, I can not imagen all banks are stealing money from there customers this way, if all banks here in the USA act like this then i understand why we are in a mess now that put people all over the world in troubles. (and who can save the mofo ?)
Coming from the Netherlands it is a big suprise to see banking here, the USA is the strongest economic nation for decades, but the banking goes like we did 25 years ago.
Cheques i havent seen in 25 years, money transfers and payments go all electronic and for the most part instant, if you have a overdraft you pay a x% yearly intrest over that, if your overdraft get higher then the limit you set on your account your account get blocked till you put money back in.
Starting my search for a new bank now, but might end up with a old sock or shoe box as a better alternative.
Man, just checking the specs, i was even only 63 dollars over, charging me 70 for it.
So not 50% profit on a loan of, but more then 100%, how to double your money in just a few days ? ask BB&T

i agree with what you both are saying, im just sticking up for the banking side. i manage a bank so i know how most of them run. i must add that i dont always agree with how other banks run and add that my bank charges 15 per item and has a max of 60 no matter how many items. so when you say all banks suck and that they are crooks, just remember that its mostly the big banks that treat their customers like crap.
I agree the problem is with the banks in our country. Those greedy snobs are the ones responsible for the economic mess. I say they should come up with a more logical and reasonable means for implementing fees on overdrafts.
To guy10782: I think the poster understands the system as he admitted his own fault, ergo your post is irrelevant. The fact that this overdraft charge is very common is a slap on the face of every American. When do the banks decide to raise the price of the overdraft fee...it occurs when their ### are on the chopping block.
It is time that our financial instutions ceased their extortion of the everyday little man.
it has nothing to do with percentages, it was a certain charge per overdraft item (prob around 30-35 bucks) which is very common. and might i add was prob in a disclosure you signed when you opened your account.

I had a credit of 216 in my bank account and spent here and there. One day i check my balance on my bank account and it had said I over drafted four times, I went and calculated my purchases and it shouldn't have charged me four times but only once.I decided to call BB&T and they said for me to go to the bank so I'd understand it clearly. I calculated over 10 times and still got the same number, and i shouldnt have gotten charged 4 over draft fee, but only one. I purchased the amounts of $71.41, $20.43, $29.07, $27.00, $15.25, $11.92 $6.26, $3.78, $3.20, $19.69 which should not have equaled to more then 216 spent, I would have 7.99 left on my card. My last transaction was a purchase of 14.99 then it should have charged me the over draft fee. BB&T is a total rip off! they'll end up charging you when you shouldnt be charged, dont bank with them!

Bank reps overstepping the boundaries of their authorities
BB&T has made many manual errors that have caused horrific situations. They have frozen my account many times in error and all they do is apologize. This is the last time for me. I will now blow this incicident up to warn other to file a legal complaint and relocate to another bank. I have witnessessed many others experience much more harsh treaments. i.e. loans not based just on your credit score more on who you know and how well you are known by the small town employees in that bank. Deposits were made and they held the funds but not only that they froze the existing funds that were there and put my account in the negative and all they said in the call center is, "I understand, you may have to go to your branch in the morning to get it cleared if it isn't correct by 6:00 a.m. in the morning. Now if you need the funds then, how is that explained. We are talking about funds that were in your account and was of no concern to the next deposit. This is not the first time this has happened to me. I will make sure this one is persued.
