3 lemons on my vacation time
I work for United Airlines and I rented an SUV from the OKC airport for a vacation trip to Destin Florida. I had my mom and my two small kids with me. Along the way I was stranded in Memphis, TN with major transmission problems. I called their road side assistance and it took them 2 hrs to send me a wrecker with another SUV that had bald tires. I followed the wrecker back to AVIS and returned both cars. Then after waisting 3 hrs of my vacation time they gave me a third SUV. When I made it to Destin after the 4th day of being there, a light came on my drive mode. Once again I called and told them they had given me another car with transmission problems. I ended up speaking with someone that spoke very bad english from their Tallahasse road side assistance who didn't know how to use a GPS to track me down and find me. The worst part was this person lived in Florida but didn't now where Destin was so he tried to find me and with no success was unable to locate where I was staying because he was 700 Miles away from me! I called the Fort Walton road side assistance and at this point this had turned into a nightmare for me and I was becoming more and more agitated that I wasn't getting the proper assistance I needed to replace the bad car with something else that would get me and my family home safe. After serveral hours later, I received a phone call that someone from road side assistance in Fort Walton, Florida was finally coming to rescue me and take their lemon back. When I returned home and presented my complaint to the OKC Airport check out counter along with all the paper work I had acquired from each bad car and what I had gone through just to get a safe car to take me home, they only deducted 2 days worth of rent. I felt very cheated after I had paid over 800.00 just to go through 3 bad cars and my vacation time very interrupted with something that should have never happened in the first place had they kept up the maintenance on their cars. As I mentioned before, I work for United Airlines and I assist 100's of custmers day in and out, but the one thing I always do is make good on a bad situation.

stained seats &cigarette smoke
I rented a car on May l4th. At the time of pick up I saw that the seats of the car had numerous stains. I could also decect a strong smell of cigarette smoke. I wanted
to get another car but was told that there was no other available at the time. I thought that Avis "tried harder." Evidentally, this was not the case.

Rip off artists
I reserved and pre-paid for a rental on priceline.com. The price I agreed to and paid was $155.06. When I returned the car, I had a charge for an 'upgrade fee' of $36.80. I did not upgrade my car, in fact, I rented the exact same car from Avis about 2 weeks prior to this experience.
I was running late for my flight, and did not have time to fight with them at that time. I called Customer Service, and they are unwilling to reverse the $36 charge. I have initiated a dispute with American Express for the extra $36. I hope they will initiate a chargeback.
I only rent cars about 5 times a year, and I have never had an experience like this. I will never use AVIS again.

We rented electrical car from AVIS for one month.
The car was promissed to be able to pass 200 km before each charging. It was only 90km.We went to talk with them and they changed the car. The new car could pass only120km.
Then the charger stopped charging the car and they wanted it back and they said they will give a new one.
They didn't have new charger for us one week. And we couldn't use the car.
Then they wanted the car again back again to give another one because they wanted to fix that one for something that we weren't told about, neither when they gave it to us, neither when they took it back.
We asked what can be done about this that we paid for whole month but we couldn't use it for a week.
and their manager was extremely rude, that made me cry.
We are a U.S.expatriate family so we have been using AVIS for years in the UK and US.
Over our families SPring Break we rented from AVIS at Frankfurt Airport. We drove to Saas-Fee and parked the vehicle in the garage for the week since it is a carless village. We then drove it back to the airport and parked it. The man working at the AVIS desk in the garage waved us off without checking the car.
We however had looked over the vehicle and it was in perfect condition. Later we were charge 1500 Euros for imaginary damage that absolutely wasn't there. We now realize looking back it was a scam because they purposely waved us away without inspection. AVIS says we can get a lawyer!
Seriously ! How much would that cost ?!?! You can read about the other Avis Frankfurt scams on Trip Advisor.
I will be posting on all travel sites and blogs to let everyone know that AVIS has an office that will scam families and take money from hard working teachers and government servants.
I PURCHASED MY AGREEMENT THROUGH PRICELINE.COM, UNFORTUNATLLY I FORGOT MY ITINERARY AT HOME, WHEN I ARRIVED AT THE AIRPORT THEY HAD NO RECORD OF MY SCHEDULED CAR. SO THE GUY AT THE COUNTER MADE UP A NEW AGREEMENT AND WAS NICE AND SAID HE WOULD GIVE ME AN UPGRADE FOR NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE. I INFORMED HIM THAT MY INSURANCE COVERED RENTAL CARS. MY TOTAL RENTAL CHARGES FOR THE CAR WAS TO BE $171.81. THAT WAS WHAT BOTH RECEIPTS STATE, GAS TANK WAS FULL AT RETURN AND I HAD UNLIMITED MILEAGE. WHEN I RETURNED HOME I CHECKED MY STATEMENT AND I WAS CHARGED $171.81 AND WAS ALSO CHARGED $195.93. THE AGENT THAT WAS GIVING ME SUCH A GREAT DEAL SAID HE WAS GIVING ME AN UPGRADE AT NO EXTRA CHARGE FLAT OUT LIED. AVIS NEEDS TO MONITOR THEIR AGENTS BECAUSE THE ARE NOT HONEST WITH THEIR CUSTOMERS. THE CORPORATE OFFICE DOESNT SEEM TO MIND THAT THE HAVE DISHONEST PEOPLE WORKING FOR THEM EITHER. I CALLED CORPORATE OFFICE THEY TOLD ME TO CALL ARIZONA WHERE I RENTED THE CAR, AND I STILL DID NOT GET ANYWHERE.
DO NOT RENT FROM AVIS
I hired an Avis car a few months ago and returned it to San Francisco airport. The bill had been prepared by Avis in expectation of me using my Australian credit card, the card i used to book the vehicle. The amount in US dollars was converted to Australian dollars at a rate of its own choosing (gouge #1, no hotel or other place in California did this to me). But i didn't pay with that card, I specifically told the clerk I was paying in US dollars (a debit card). He then did another currency conversion and put that against my US debit card. This round-robin cost me $60. Avis has stonewalled me and my bank (because I lodged a complaint). But I am telling everyone I know. My travel agent said"they do stinky things over there.'' I only experienced this one "stinky thing'', although it was generally irritating that hotels and so forth would only accept payment of accounts from the card used to make the booking. Avis was a sour note to an otherwise fantastic trip.
I used the AVIS offer that AA sells at your web site (Save up to 35% with every Avis rental plus earn up to 3000 bonus miles, using American Airlines Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) number K817165 and the coupon numberMUAA022) and made a reservation at AVIS. Now AVIS and AA are refusing to give me the DISCOUNT that they offered me! I'm trying to solve this problem with both, but no one cares!
I rented a car from Avis on September 1st and returned it on September 3rd in Houston at the airport. From the time I dropped off the car till 14 days later Avis lost there own car I received a letter in the mail after 14 days have gone by stating that Avis was going to have me arrested for not returning there car to Houston.I call customer service that was very rude and had no knowledge of there own employees doings. Avis told me that they just found the car and that I was doing to be charged $700.00 for keeping the car past the return date.I told them I returned the car on the 3rd like I said, and why should I be charged for there incompetent employees.I was given 5 different numbers to call and nobody was willing to help Avis stated that there was nothing that they could do.I ask Avis why did they let 14 days go by and not call me when Avis had all the information to get in touch with me.Avis said that they called one time and didn't get answer so I ask why didn't you leave a message and Avis stated that they couldn't. I believe that Avis is a scam company if they were so worried about there car they could have picked up the phone or sent a email message but instead they let 14 days go by and Avis wants me to pay for there mistake I'm not going to let that happen.
DON'T EVER RENT FROM AVIS!
I HAD A CAR FOR 3 DAYS AND 6 WEEKS LATER I CAME TO FIND MY BANK ACC 1300 POUNDS OVERDRAWN.
WHEN I TOLD MY BANK ABOUT IT, THEY IVESTEGATED ONLY TO DISCOVER THAT THEY HAD FRAUDULENTLY TAKEN AN ADDITIONAL 1200.00 POUNDS 4 WEEKS LATER LEAVING ME OVERDRAWN AGAIN WITH NO PROOF THAT I HAD THIS VEHICAL AFTER THE 3 DAYS.
THEY ARE LEAGLE THIEFS AND ADVISE THE WHOLE WORLD TO STAY CLEAR OF THIS ROUGE RENTAL COMPANY!
avis is a terrible and stupid company. they rip people off and overcharge them and their employees worknig there are so rude and treat customers like ###. I hate avis beware renting from them if you don't want to get scammed or screwed over. this is an unethical company with schmucks and idiots running it
If both receipts state 171.81 then that is what you were charged, it is not plausible that an amount greater than your receipt was added on top, odds are it was a debit hold, that the bank had not removed in time for the statement.
Terrible service
First of all, I rented a car from AVIS and not until when I returned the car that I realized that it was on a "re-call" list and should have never been rented out without a proper service first. Then, AVIS LAX office couldn't locate the car just 5 mins after being returned.
Here is the story:
5 mins after I returned the car, I realized that I left a bag in the car and then went back to the agent who checked me in. The car was gone and he couldn't find it anywhere in the LAX parking lot (not in the cleaning or maintenance area).
No one at that office knew what happened to that car. They thought some other agents (from other locations) must have driven it to their location. Apparently, no one recorded that activity. The car just vanished 5 minutes after being returned.
I waited for two hours and they still couldn't find it but the manager assured me that he will put a "hold" on that car so when the car turns up in the system, it will not be rented again. It was at this time, that I realized that I have been driving a car that needs service. It was on a "recall list" and the LAX manager was surprised that car was rented to me.
After I came home, I called them everyday and being told repeatedly "don't know where the car is" then 5 days later, I was told "oh, that car was rented by the Budget office next door to us". I then sent a lengthy email to the customer_service department asking for explanation. And after sending my email twice, 10 days later, I got the reply in below. I even sent the same email to the AVIS VP and a customer relationship manager in the corporate office but no reply.
How can such a poorly managed company, AVIS car rental, can survive in the US market?
Here are my questions and the reply from AVIS:
> I would like to get an explanation from your company that:
> 1) How can a car disappear from Avis car 5 minutes after being returned
(there were at least 10 cars in front of my car, my car was not even the first
in line) and no one knew who took it?
>
> 2) How can a car that needs service
being rented to me in San Louis Obispo
and then again in LAX without being properly serviced?
>
> 3) How can a car that was on a "Hold" list can be rented?
> 4) Why the manager not returning my calls to apologize or let me know the status of my search?
Reply from Avis:
Avis is not responsible for
any loss or damage to personal property left or carried in a rental
vehicle, therefore lack of planning, organization, or responsibility on your part
In regards to the manager's actions and the vehicle being rented out, I unfortunately do not have access to that information; hence I can not provide an answer on this.
As far as the vehicle being rented
while on 'HOLD' again I do not have access to this information and would be something that only the manager of the Los Angeles Intl Airport location.

As someone who has rented cars for years, I understand that sometimes you have to wait for the car you requested. They always offer you another type of car. It is up to you whether you take their offer or not. Most of the time, they will upgrade you for free if they have an upgrade available. Your 'friend' needs to learn patience. And you need to learn to stop posting for your 'friend'.
Like I said, ignorance.
LONG WAITS FOR CARS ALREADY RESERVED .
I had reserved a car 1 month prior- on arriving at the AIrport Avis LAX at 2.30 pm, - they did not have a car .
Car was only ready at 5.30 pm
3 HOURS WAIT
RACIST STAFF.
The gentleman standing next to me who was also waiting for his car . His AVIS agent asked him " where are you from ?"- he replied " Pakistan"
The AVIS agents reply was - " There are a lot of your kind here now days "
Well you ### pill dispenser - it was my friend who was the recipient of the racist comment .
He also has written to the director of Budget / Avis about the service .
Do you really think that a 3 hour wait for a car already reserved car is ACCEPTABLE ?
Grow up please ignoramus
You know what they say when you assume. I do not work for any car rental. I work in a pharmacy. But thanks for proving your ignorance.
It is you who is mistaken ! But you are an Avis staff I assume .
Do you think they hold the cars for you? No, they rent them out. You wait until the next car comes in. Remember, when you have the car, the person waiting on your car will have to wait for you to return it.
I think you mistook the comment as racist. That is what happens when people eavesdrop on other people's conversations.
avis rent a car are fraudulent theives they overcharged me $600 . They have 430 complaints at rip off google. including an ex employee confessing to their scams that he was part of and a you tube video complaining. why doesn't the government intervene and stop these con artists from ripping more and more people off.
nice comment, clearly relevant to the initial complaint. I am truly sorry you had a bad experience with Avis, but in a high demand market vehicles are sometimes stationary for a limited amount of time, It is possible that the vehicle went on recall when you had it out rented, or that the recall is not a major safety issue that would have allowed you to have a vehicle, would you rather them be out of cars at checkout? or provide you with a recall for a heated wiper module shorting out (lost of Chevy's have this)?
As for leaving your bags in the car, that unfortuneatly is your problem, as an ex-employee, sometimes vehicles are rented with stuff in them, there is high turnover, i have had customers call back on lost jewelry, garage door openers, militray orders etc.. and the vehicle is no longer anywhere near the location the rented from, it is bad luck but do not blame avis for you forgetting your bag, its irresponsible.
Beware, buying a insurance at Avis that they wont tell you that your being charge a day, they will only tell you that how much the insurance is, misleading you to think that you are charge only for what they tell you, when you return the car and get the bill, , , surprise! then they tell you that you initial the contract, , , they also wont ask you if you have insurance for your personal vehicle that you can use for rental cars so you dont have to buy theres becouse they get commision for selling it. they will also lie to you about insurance if you ask question, and if you dont believe me! go to Avis at Midland, Texas airport if you live close by.
they say we never returned car
We have been on the telephone for hours over the past two days with Avis in the US and Panama and am getting nowhere.
We rented a car in Panama last Tuesday, 24 March at 1045 in the morning. We returned the car Friday, 27 March at 1600, at the same location: Marcos A Gelabert Airport (PT2).
When requesting a receipt on the Avis web site we were advised on the website that the car was never returned!
We were supposed to pick up the car at 0815. When we went to the Avis rental counter at the airport there was no one at the counter, no telephone at the counter, and they did not answer their posted telephone numbers. Another rental car company finally helped us contact Avis. They kept promising to be there in a few minutes. We waited from 0815 until 1030 for a man to show up with the car. He spoke no English and had a Spanish-only rental agreement to sign. With the help of a bilingual passerby we finally signed the paperwork and received the car keys. The airport office was supposed to be open from 0800 to 1700 daily. There was NEVER anyone there and no one to contact.
Per the Avis Panamanian representative's instructions (via the volunteer translator) we left the car in the airport parking lot and dropped the keys into the "drop box" (hole) in the Avis counter.
Avis still continues to charge us a daily/hourly rate for a car we turned in. We also pre-ordered a GPS unit and it was not delivered with the car. We are apparently being charged for it, too.
We returned the car with a full tank of gas. The mileage was 89729.4 kilometers. The time was 1600 local time on Friday, 27 March.
I suspect the car is still sitting in the parking lot, or by now has been stolen. I am curious and apprehensive as to how long before the arrest warrant for us is issued.
It is particularly frustrating that we cannot contact anyone with Avis in Panama City, Panama. It took many calls and hours on hold before we finally reached someone at Avis Customer Service that was even willing to take some ownership of the issues. While Avis USA customer support has rendered some assistance, they also were unable to contact anyone in Panama who could speak English. Finally, Avis USA supposedly sent a fax and asked us to wait another 48 hours. Avis has not replied to any of our emails.
I personally feel that the Avis operation in Panama City needs a complete evaluation of its operational and management practices. As a long-time Preferred Avis customer this has been a terrible experience; and still has not been resolved!
The worst financial impact is that we are still being charged for the rental of a car that we turned in last week. Additional costs are in fruitless telephone calls to Panama and much wasted time on hold on the telephone.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Question: Where are/were the car keys?
Didn't mention anything about them.
avis ripped us off
We made a reservation 6 months in advance to get the best deal, as we always do. We reserved a full size car for $181.30 and had a $20.00 off coupon that was to be taken off at the counter. All was well until we returned the car and found that out bill was $355.41 when we asked why they said that they had up graded us to a larger car. We went to speak to a manager ( W.L. Butler ) and he said I had initialed it so therefore I knew about it. He said his manager would call me in the morning. The girl went over everything that I signed for and the only mention that I signed for was that I was denying the insurance and that I would bring the car back with a full tank of gas, there was absolutely no mention of any upgrade. Nobody called us and after two days of telephoning I finally got to talk to a manager (Michel Wu ). He told us unfortunately there was nothing he could do since I had initialed it. I explained to him that if I wanted to upgrade I would of used my upgrade coupon instead of my $20.00 off coupon. I had no need for a upgrade and did not want an upgrade. The car we rented was no bigger or better than most mid size cars that we rent. This is shear trickery what they did, and they know it. It may of been that they were out of full size cars. I don't know. We waited in a very long line about 45 minutes and there was still a very long line when we left. I know that they were very busy that day. A fellow that I spoke to at Avis named Jerry Mc Clunky told me that they will upgrade you if they are out of you size car and in that case it should of been a complimentary upgrade. My question is why was I upgraded? I have called my credit card company and disputed the charges, but the manager at Avis said they had a signed contract so it would do us no good. I am sick about this, This sure put a nasty finish to our wonderful vacation.

I had to rent a car in a hurry for a one-way rental in a small town. I had no internet so I had to call the reservations center. I got a rate of $117.00, which I thought was high but assumed it was because it was a one-way rental. Once I got to my destination I found I needed the car for 2 more days. When I called to extend the reservation I was told the rate would be the same, $117 a day! I got online and found the exact same car for $30 on Avis' website! The reservation agent's excuse for charging 4 times that rate for my extension? Rates are subject to change.
I asked for a supervisor and he hung up oon me. I called back and got a supervisor. She said there was nothing she could do and transferred me to someone else. That person was curt and had a horrible attitude from the start. This is a supervisors superevisor? She accused me of trying to change my original rental rate, which I was not. I explained that I simply wanted a more reasonable rate, something closer to what I could get at any other rental company AND at their website. She suggested that I return the car and then book a separate reservation because there was no way to change the rate on an extention. I told her it was a horrible business practice and that if I drove all the way to the airport to return the car I sure wasn't going to re-rent from them! Her response was "I can't help you anymore". What's their motto? We try Harder? Whatever. I will never rent from them again. There are too many other companies that deserve my business.
so you are blaming someone else because you didnt read what you were signing? if that were the case, then everyone would get an upgrade then ask for it to be removed when they returned it.
I currently am an employee Avis Car Rental in the Northeast US. I apologize for the lack of customer service you were given by both the agent and supervisor you spoke with. When you rent a vehicle one-way (with any rental car company), and the city-pairs are not in the same market area, they rates will be higher. If you 1 day rental (24 hours period) has to be extended or you return later, the rate cannot be changed and the same daily one-way rate will apply for the each of the additional days. While that contract is open, it is still considered a one-way rental. What we suggest to customers, who rent one-way from or to our location and they think there might be a chance, or even if they do need to extend, is this...
Say you are renting from Washington, DC to New York City, NY and it's a one day one-way rental. You tell the agent in DC, that you might need to keep the vehicle a few days longer. We suggest to the customer if they are just driving straight to the destination city and need the car locally there, to go to the location, close the one-way contract with the 24 hour period, and re-rent the same car at the local rates (which are generally lower than one-way rates). The same thing goes for us being the return location. Customer comes in from a one-way, comes in or calls inquiring about extending. We ask them to come in, close out the contract and re-rent locally at our local rates to save them money.
You will get some agents at some locations (but not all), that seem to not be not interested in helping out the customer, by suggesting small helpful tips as this one. Please don't judge the whole company for these few agents lacking customer service skills.
awful company
I rented a car in Stockholm, Sweden for two weeks last spring. I told them I did not want their extra insurance, as I pay $25 to my credit card company each time I rent a car with their card, for their premium coverage.
The agent printed out a rental contract in Swedish ( I don't understand Swedish ) and told me to initial it to decline the insurance---he had actually filled in the contract to indicate that I accepted the insurance. My wife was standing next to me and heard me decline the insurance.
My credit card company has disputed the $350 charge with Avis and I have contacted Avis customer service---they refuse to correct this fraudulent charge because they have a contract with my initials on it.
I have contacted Christopher Elliott ( the ombudsman at National Geographic Traveler magazine )---He says this is known as the 'sign here scam' for foreign tourists.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
It's the " sign here cam " for ANYONE in ANY COUNTRY OR STATE
bad service
Rented a car, have confirmation. Plane was delayed so budget closed and left me stranded in ALBANY Airport during a snowstorm!
Phone # given on confirmation out of service! Manager Laura Young NOT on duty.
It took 3 phone calls to [protected] (reservations) as customer service was also conveniently closed!
NOE (supervisor) from reservations refused to help, said to wait until they reopened at 6am. I asked if they were going to apy for hotel, they refused. Said there was NOTHING" they could do!
Their confirmation isn't worth the papers its printed on as they won't honor it or compensate you in any way. If you want to actually get your car rent from AVIS.

Avis Frankfurt airport: unauthorized charges to credit card
Dear all,
2 weeks ago I rented a car at AVIS Frankfurt airport; if you know that horrible airport, you will know you need to walk about 3 km's to get to the area where the rental cars can be picked up. After getting the administration sorted out and picking up the keys, we walked all the way to the car pickup for about 20mins. Upon arrrival we found the right car, but found no AVIS representative. We gave the car a quick (but incomplete) checkup by ourselves and found nothing wrong that was not already described in the contract (or so we thought).
Ater 3 days of work related travelling without incident, we returned the car to the same location, where the AVIS subcontractor (SAL service GmbH) found the following damages and missing items:
1. There was supposedly a dent in the side of the car that we mistakenly thought was described in the contract. Our misunderstanding of German made us believe this was described in the contract.
2. This person found that the jack and jack-fluid refill unit was missing. We had found the spare tyre on arrival and assumed the jack was underneath as with most cars of this make. How is one supposed to know where to find the jack and this never-seen-before refill fluid for every different car/make?
The resulting discussion nearly caused me to miss my flight. Despite my refusal to sign the authorization or approval, AVIS subsequently charged an additional 1130S$ to my credit card for up to now unspecified reasons. I am currently taking legal action based on some precendents and the credit card company is also preparing to take legal action against them as they charged unspecified items to my credit card without authorization.
One thing I have learnt; despite renting with AVIS for the last 10 years, this was the last time for me and anyone within my company. I hope that everyone will realise the unprofessional way AVIS handles their business and can spread the word about these practises.
Rented an Audi A6 from Avis in Frankfurt for 3 days. Mostly Auto Bahn driving, totally eventless in terms of accidents, crashes etc. Upon return they had an inspection guy whose job it is to find damage. We were very concerned about this of course. He immediately put is hand under the front air dam and identify some scratched in the plastic on both sides. It had to happen on earlier rental but they didn't care. At this lousy location there is nobody to evaluate the vehicle with you as you just drive away after waiting an hour for the slow counter people to process your rental. He then found smudges in the back trunk. Honestly this car was perfect but they engineered $1000 Euro of damage and place on my bill. Thankfully I bought the insurance so mitigated the risk. I don't know what the German version of a class action law suit is but it is coming their way. This is a total scam and I feel sorry for people who are victimized and have to pay out of pocket for this money scam.
very bad employees of lufthansa on frankfurt airport i think airport custumer help department must take legal action against them because they not coperative with those who remain their due to fault in aeroplane
Rented a car from Indianapolis Airport. I later went to return in there but their GPS gave me directions to the old airport that hasn't existed in 4 0r 5 years. I missed my flight, had to spend another night on the road, drive 6 hours to Cleveland and than return the car. They twice told me that they were going to remove the the added charge of returning car to different airport. I finally called a 3rd time and they said the removal of charges was overruled. ARE YOU KIDDING ME! Anytime I've had an issue with Avis, this is the kind of treatment I get.
AVIS = HORRIBLE!
I travel all the time, even though my company wants me to rent through Avis, no more, EVER!
The same happene to me. They claimed the car had a scratch. Basically robbery.
Avis offers to fill your tank with gas at approximately the going rate $3.20 (in sf) when you return their rentals. Sounds like a convenience, but beware! The contract states that you will be charged for a FULL tank of gas regardless of how much is in the tank when you return it! in my case with a chevy impala the cost was over $60, even though i returned it with more than 1/2 tank of gas in the car. Heavy taxes are also applied to the gas fee. Forego this one and fill up at a nearby gas station before returning the car.
I made a reservation online for a vehicle to be picked up on Monday, 3/23/09. I had confirmation with a base rate of $198.54 per day, with a total rental charge of 255.38 per day, including taxes and fees. When I got to the Milwaukee airport, Pam, at the rental counter, informed me that the car that I rented was not available, but that they did have a grand marquis available for $255.38. Since that was the same price I was quoted, I agreed. I circled the price on the rental agreement and initialed that price. I made clear to Pam that was the only amount I was agreeing to pay, and I would pay no more than I was originally quoted. She assured me that was the case, and that my original price would be honored. When I got to the Toledo airport to return the vehicle, my total bill was $331.11, which is significantly higher than my original quote. I contacted the customer service number, and they were unwilling or unable to resolve this issue. While the car I reserved was not available, the quote should have been honored, regardless of the vehicle provided, as the vehicle reserved was not available. The same thing happened to the woman ahead of me in line. This smells of a bait-and-switch scheme. I have never had a car rental company not honor the original quote in good faith when the vehicle that was reserved was not available. This is the first time I have used Avis, and it will be my last.
Renting from avis was a nightmare. The branch that we rented the car from was at the orlando international airport. We specifically asked the representative was there a hold on the credit card. She assured me that there wasn't. I asked her four times to be clear that there wasn't a mistake. Of course, she was wrong and it held $600 the credit card. There site doesnt say anything about holds either. We didn't get our money from the hold until 3 weeks later. Battling to get a supervisor to return calls and someone at the front desk to answer.
Rental Agreement #: [protected].
2 Day Unlimited Miles SUV Rental returned with a full tank and 1 hour late.
I was charged $1, 196.02 ... that's unconscionable enough.
There has also been a "Hold" on my bank account for the amounts of $429.12 and $430.00 since March 27th.
That brings the total charge to $2, 055.14; for a 2 day car rental.
Rest assured, not only will this will pursued to the fullest extent allowable by law, but I will post this information on every message board I can find on the Internet.
I had a prepaid vehicle reserved on Avis, all seemed well, till I went up to the counter and the lady refused to give me a vehicle under claims that I have bad credit (I don't have bad credit). I promptly went to Hertz who didn't seem to have a problem giving me a vehicle.
Meanwhile Avis wants to charge me a $50 cancellation fee for this claiming it was my fault for not passing their crappy credit check system. Small claims here I come. I'm sure they'll enjoy the $5000 bill they have to charge for their lawyer to fly into my crappy small town court.
My advise, stay away from Avis, they seem to have mood swings where they'll either give you a car or not as this is not the first time this has happened to me with Avis.
I got ripped off by AVIS Frankfurt, Germany. Charging me $668, the same day I dropped off the car, which was a Sunday, for a scratch on the rim. What a rip off! I cannot remember ever hitting a curb. The pictures sent also looks suspicious. They sent a close-up of a scratched rim. Couldn't tell if it came from the car I was driving. The picture taken showing the car fender and rim does not have any evidence of scratches. This is how they make their money. Not from the cost to rent, but from charging extra for so-called damages. Next time I rent in Germany, I'm marking every little scuff mark. They will not make me pay extra again.
Endangers single women in the dark
Avis requires that receipts be presented when cars are returned, showing that the gas tank was filled within five miles from the return location.
Returning a car from a distance of more than five miles away at 5:30 a.m. in a strange city where gas station locations and hours are not known means driving around hoping to be safe, finding an open station, and finding the way back to the airport car rental location.

yes avis is a HUGE scam. their rental agents make BIG money off upgrades and insurance and scam customers by just adding it. the things they do are SO bad. they rip consumers off and management encourages it. yes avis rips you off its because the management and sales reps make big bucks off the upgrade money. this is how they get their sales commission and they hide it from the customers. their sales reps make a lot of money by doing this and the company makes lots of money. avis are only cheaters and liars watch out for them never trust them at all! also file a complaint because even though its a signed contract most avis will take the charges off...
yes I agree.
100% true I believe it.

Avis Rent a Car
Seattle, Washington

I reserved a Avis rental car through CarRentals.com. The reservation was for 2 days @ $25.99/day. When I arrived the pickup location, Avis representative over the counter offered me an upgrade from a compact to a median size car for a “couple of more bucks” (quoted his word). I assumed he meant $2 more than the $25.99 in the reservation. I agreed. I also explained to him that my credit card covered the insurance and I did not need extra insurance. He completed the paper work and handled to me said, “sign here, initiate here. I trusted his word and did not go through rental agreement line by line before signing. I was shocked to find out the rate actually went up from $25.99 a day to $42.99 a day. That is not a couple of bucks more! The insurance was also added without my consent. My credit card was charged by $160, 100 more than in my reservation.

Our experience, we are sharing for all our friends, who book thru internet companies.
We rented a premium car from AVIS, MCI (Kansas City International Airport) thru Hotwire.com
When we went to pickup the Car, they didn't give us two choices 2 different types of cadillac,
without any explanation or clarity they gave the papers to sign. We are in a hurry and we believed
AVIS company we initialed, thinking that we are getting the car we booked.
When we returned the car after six days and they gave an additional bill for $240 saying that,
that is for the upgrade and charged on the credit card. We said we never asked for an upgrade and they said we put initial for the upgrade.
Later we get to know from our friends that by hiding and misleading us they make money from the
customers who booked thru internet companies like hotwire, priceline etc.. We complaint about this and
got an as usual "regretting letter" from the manager.
This is a daylight white collar cheating. Don't be cheated with this types
of frauds. Double check and ask before you put initial. Make sure if there is
any additional charges, before you pickup a car.
BEWARE and AVOID AVIS MCI(Kansas City International Airport)
A ripped off customer.
overcharge and misrepresentation
Prior to my recent trip to Italy, I contacted and booked most of my trip on Expedia. As far as a car rental was concerned I asked Expedia what it would cost, approx, for a car rental for two weeks. They sent me an example of a econ. car at $34.00 per day. I reserved a car over the phone. When I arrived in Rome, Italy I took the reserved car at a total price of $750.00 for that time period. During the process of filing out the contract, I asked the woman who helped me, "is this price that you are quoting me in dollars or euros. I asked that question three different times at different stages in the contract. Each time she answered me she confirmed that the contract was in American dollars and not Euros. I rented the car and had a wonderful time driving all over Italy. It was beautiful. Returned the car, signed a hand held computer and it said that I would be charged on my credit card 704.50. I looked at my wife and said, "they charged us less because we returned the car one day early. Off I went to the airport. Several weeks later I got my credit card statement. It said that I charged 1143.50 at Avis. I went crazy. I have been lied to and overcharged by $450.00. What do I have to do to get my money back?
I agree. My neighbor who barely speaks English came to me after she received her credit card statement which had charges on it for a car she rented from Avis in Texas while visiting her daughter. Her and her husband (an elderly couple) were overcharged $500.00 for insurance even after telling the agent that they did not need insurance because their car insurance covered them anywhere in the U.S. She said she told the agent this several times and trusted him when he gave here the agreement to sign. They live on a fixed income and this was really a rip off. I can't believe that Avis has so little concern for their customers. It infuriates me that Avis has not even responded to their complaint. I am going to try to help them resolve this but I feel that they are up against a brick wall. Any adivce would be helpful.
bad service
On [protected] i flew to Houston and rent a car from AVIS. First they gave me a Honda Accord with a dead battery, then they gave me a Chevrolet Impala with two front tires that are worn to the bone, and i did not see it. The car vibrated uncomfortably above 60 mph and i was so scared because the two front tires can blow anytime. I was so mad at myself because i did not check the tires and i was also mad at AVIS and wonder why they dare to give customer that kind of car with two worn-out front tires(two rear tires are good), why their stupid mechanic put two bad tires in the front? they do not care about customer safety?..so be carefull folks.

Avis Rent a Car in Fullerton (1105 N Harbor Blvd, Fullerton, CA) rents out a car that was flagged for recall due to faulty brakes. I only found out about this when I got figured in an accident (luckily no one was injured) when the brakes failed. The towing service guy told me that the Dodge Avenger (the rented out to me) was actually flagged for recall.
Beware of Avis if you value your life!
Also, when they hold you responsible when you cannot return the car on time. Which actually, I was at the specified location at the appropriate date/time; but there was no one from Avis at that location for hours! And they were threatening to charge me for extra days and/or towing services.
It was a mistake to rent from Avis!
Tina R.
I am not going to say that Avis cars or tires, or any rental for that matter are in pristine
condition. In fact I will say that often times tires are slightly worn. However I ask why you chose Avis in the first place? was it the price? part of paying a lower cost means the cost has to come from somewhere, All Avis cars are rented lower than 35, 000 miles, the average tire life is 40, 000. Now with missed rotations and such wear can most certainly exist. The operator at your location however has no ability to purchase new tires, short of actually paying for them out of pocket.
Now is it like playing a game of roulette? perhaps that is a fair analogy
but the fact is the tire did blow when you were operating the car, and you had declined to pay
for coverages on that tire.
pretty open and shut case. your signature was on file, exactly. read what you sign before you sign it, ask questions, look over the vehicle and raise any concerns and get responses in writing if neccessary. they have damage report slips that you could have notated a worn tire on. If you didn't see the worn tire, then perhaps it was not wear that caused the tire to blow.
to the OP, most locations do not have their own mechanic and have a central location ie. an airport where they send their fleet to be maintained, if a limited fleet is available they agency probably had little choice with the car they provided you. and you could have always reviewed the car and declined to take it.
your complaint was posted quite a while back, but had to comment just incase you still might catch these.
I too had the same sort of situation with my last Avis Rental. I actually didn't realize the tires were bad until one blew on me, as I was pulling out of my driveway, and slowly (5mp most!) turning the vehicle to go. I put it into Drive, and within 2 seconds the tire blew, throwing me practically into the ditch. i was basically right in front of my home, so very thankful about that. it was pouring down raining too, so I would have been in a huge mess had I gone very far. Long story short, they blamed me for causing the tire to blow, being so rude, not caring that i was hurt physically, and telling me if i had purchased the insurance they tried to tell me about, i wouldn't be in this position.
I have never been treated so horribly in my life. To make it even worse, they charged my credit card about $800 too much and b/c they had a signature on file (not for that amount!), my bank re-issued the charge after i denied it. They need to be shut down.
Sincerely,
Tina R.
Dallas, tx
fraudulently overcharged my credit car
We rented a car from Avis from 3/29/2008 to 4/14/08. The agreeable rental total was $531.00.
Unfortunately, when we received the credit statement, we were billed for $696.55. We were very frustrated and immediately went through the a seris of events of contacting the local place, the fleet/district manager and the Corporate Office.
The AVIS TEAM took side of one another and quickly turned our case now. They said that the extra charges were for clearning but when we returned the car, we were told that everything ws OK.
The recent rental experience with Avis was very terrible and unacceptable. When we brought the car, we returned it to the branch manager's husband. Upon inspecting the car, he informed us that everything was fine and we were free to go. We asked him twice to give me some form of paper indicating the car was OK. Twice, he said it was OK and we could leave. We both left after the second verbal OK. This means this is the termination of our contract between us and Avis. At that point, we are no longer held responsible or liable with the car.
If there were issues, we should have been informed back then. A claim should have been filed at the moment when we returned the car. We brought the car back four hours before it was due and we even cleaned it beforehand. If the condition was not acceptable, we could have done something to work it out. The extra cleaning fee charged on the credit card is excessive. A car cleaning usually costs from $15.00 - $50.00 at the max. The price charged appears to be synonymous to a detailing fee.
Teresa (the manager) and her husband do not run the rental car agency in a professional manner. They are very dishonest, unethical and irresponsible in this matter. Teresa was out of the country when we returned the car so she had no idea of the cars condition. When a car is discharged, this should be the end of the rental. Adding extra fees after the car is signed off leads to bogus charges which I have no way of verifying. The car is no longer in my possession. There is no way for me to dispute the claim. False claims can be fabricated.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Agreed, this complaint is spot on, especially when compared to other ones on this site.
The verbal ok places, all of the solace now on the agency. If they had an issue and you were on location at the time of return, then correct, the release of you being told all was ok is in fact
a termination of your contract.
We rented a car from Avis at Melpase Airport. We hired it for three days. Unfortunately having given ourselves 2 hours to get to Melpase Airport the clutch went on the car it just stuck in. We tried many many times to contact Avis who continually said put the phone down we will ring you back with an English speaking person. They did not. We were in a very vuneralble position having just come through at lest a six lane toll leading to another road. There was anoter road to the right of the car and barrier with a 15' drop so we could go nowhere for safety! Eventually we rang UK Avis who tried to be helpful but were unable to find us for another twenty minutes. When finally they tracked us down they sent a protective vehicle to protect the car. Ten minutes later the tow truck arrived and took us to a village - I have no idea where - they arranged for a taxi which took us to the airport but unfortunately as my husband was in a wheel chair and we had no idea where to go we missed the checkin for our flight by a matter of minutes. We then had to book another flight with another airline and fly to Heathrow instead of Birmingham! We had also to pay 99 Euros for the taxi to the airport. When we checked our bank statement Avis had charged not only for the hire of the car but the accident/breakdown plus petrol and airport charges. In total we are now nearly £2, 500 out of pocket. Anyone any suggestions as to how we get our money back. The smallprint printed on the reverse in Italian is not much help!

I went to the Avis website directly. In my small town we have 2 rental car companies. Comparing Enterprise with Avis, Avis was remarkably cheaper for the same vehicle. I called and asked if their price included unlimited miles, he said yes. I asked if the price included all fees, he said yes. I proceeded to reserve a vehicle and he gave me a total $100 over what their internet site was showing. I told him this, he stammered a reason. I told him that the two companies charged the same with Avis hidden charges and I was not ready to reserve and I had not given him my credit card number yet, glad I hadn't. Also, be cautious of their website. When I was simply comparing the two companies, I clicked on a vehicle to get details and I was instantly given a confirmation number. I quickly cancelled the devious schemed confirmation. Avis should not have to play tricks using employees and computers to turn a profit. They provide a service people want, so why run a thievery business?

customer service issue
I recently rented a car from avis and they authorize my insurance company these to do direct billing, i still had to put a 100 hold on my credit card only for security, reasons. They informed me that 7/18/08 will be the return date at that time my insurance will stop billing i returned the vehicle as stated when i got there they claim they didn't have authorization but they forgot they contacted me to make me aware every time it was extended, they were suppose to take a hold off my card but haven't and they don't have reason why i stopped by to speak with them about this issue and told the worker what i thought about them making excuses to hold my 100. The worker became angry with me and ran up on me yelling at me stating hes going to charge everything on my card and that i am going to pay for calling him out i contact the police due to his aggression and he got out of my face the police did nothing at call stated he didn't hit me, so i should be ok. They were rude and he was a man the way he ran up in my face made me intimidated what can i do
I cannot pay my bill
I have received 4 letters collections department in the past months. I attempted to pay with an American Express in April which did not go through. We received more letters and I have attempted to pay with a Mastercard as told to by a Collections Department representative on June 28 and today, July 9, we received a fourth letter informing me I cannot rent...

They did the same thing to me
scammed
Upon returning the rental car, An Avis representative advised me he would call me a taxi to the airport. I told him I lived in Costa Rica and needed a taxi less than 3 miles up the road. He told me that would be $10.00. Because I live in CR I know that the meter at most would be less than $5.00 (2500.00 colones). So I declined his taxi and said I would get my own. He then without looking at the car that I drove in said to me "Your antenna is broken and your going to have to pay for that". - what a scam! I couldnt believe he was going to break my antennia or charge me because I wouldnt take his friends overpriced taxi. He then refused to give me any receipts for my credit cards - I used a different one for the GPS rental. Im waiting to see how much they bill my credit cards- since they wouldnt even give me a receipt.

Attention: John Barrows, Vice President
Corporate Communication & Public Affairs
Reference: Budget Contract Nr. [protected] (3/3/08 El Paso)
Dear Mr. Barrows:
Events in your El Paso Airport facility are reflecting a very negative light on the good name of Avis / Budget.
March 3rd, I rented a car at the El Paso Airport terminal. I was given a 2008 Nissan, along with your standard Vehicle Condition Report that has a diagram of the vehicle’s condition. (Attachment #1). As described in the report that was handed to me, the vehicle was severely scratched and marred from one end to the other. I did my traditional walk around and saw the dozen of scrapes and scratches they noted, along with the caveat, “No Roof Damage”, which led me to believe they were quite aware of the severity of damage to the vehicle prior to my rental.
Two weeks later, out of the blue, I received a phone call from Angelica Lopez, of the Suborgation Management Team in San Antonio Texas. She stated she received a Budget damage report pertaining to the vehicle I rented. I asked her what kind of damage? She stated that the front had been damaged and the bumper was missing. I immediately sent my rebuttal to those allegations. (Attachment #2)
Let me state categorically, I caused no damage to the vehicle.
Through several phone calls to Ms. Lopez, I requested an itemized estimate, the photos, and more details. Finally, on April 7th, I received a letter that should have had the estimates, photos and details. I received nothing but a letter requesting $1, 185.66. (Attachment #3 ) Again, I asked for the details. My insurance company USAA has informed me that they have been uncooperative and evasive.
They finally faxed me over the incident report that says “ft. bumper rt side middle scrape” (Attachment #4)
Still, this is not enough information. More phone calls were made. I finally got a copy of the itemized damage estimate. This list includes, the front bumper, front fenders, front door, rear view mirror, door moldings, panels, and get this door handles. Hey, why not the Alamo? I hear it’s damaged too.. (Attachment #5)
This is a blatant act on behalf of Budget El Paso to blame another customer, and attempt to get them to pay for the damages.. This is a scam.. Pure and simple.
I know armed with this knowledge you will investigate the practices of this office and bring the El Paso team back to good ethical business practices that you at Avis/Budget strive for. I have already contacted the Better Business Bureau and will peruse this matter fervently.
I look forward to a resolution to this situation.
Sincerely,

overcharged!
I rented a car from Avis for a 1 way trip to Florida from Louisville International Airport, however I wound up returning the car in Memphis, TN. to take a flight home to Florida. Avis car rentals staff at this Memphis Airport location where not only the rudest people and un trained employees I have ever encountered. The manager over charger my checking account $300 plus dollars. Being a single mom on a short vacation my funds where very limited. By Avis overcharging me, it caused my account to go into the minus. Also, the rude people there took over 2 hours to process my return which in turn caused me to miss my flight. Now no flight for 2 days to Florida I go back to Avis to try and get a car. Not knowing they over charged my account, now my bank card won't work and I am stranded. Not only stranded for two days no flight going out, I was not able to rent a hotel room or even get any money to buy food. Needless to say Avis has not trained their employees on ethics. I am still trying to get my money back from them as well as all the overdraft fees my account has been charged. And in the mean time try and figure out how to put food on the table for my two children and pay for there supplies of life. I have sent many emails and now a hard copy to their corporate office and here hoping for some results. If anyone has any advise I would love to hear it Thank you for this website. I please don't rent from AVIS.
Has anyone found out how/who to contact at Avis about problems? I know now not to EVER AGAIn book a car with this company. "Avis Tries Harder" to mess with your head and get more money.
AVIS at Zurich Airport, Switzerland got me two weeks ago by inappropriately charging my VISA account directly in Canadian Dollars, rather than in Swiss Francs. The exchange rate they applied was much more unfavorable than the exchange rate applied by VISA directly. Unfortunately, they had covered their behinds with a fine print clause in the contract that I had overlooked.
If you are unlucky enough to rent from AVIS: Buyer beware!
It happened the same to me in Puerto Rico, the rudest people ever met!
The Agengy Operator was WALDY RAMIREZ
and the office was in 1050 ASHFORD AVENUE, CONDADO (PUERTO RICO)
Don't rent AVIS!
