terrible service
I have previously shopped at Plato’s Closet in the Woodlands and I have been able to leave as a happy buyer. However, when I went in to sell my nice clothing, accessories, and bags, I am sad to say that I left knowing that I won’t go back to there ever again. Like I said, I had never sold my clothing to the Plato’s Closet in The Woodlands before, so I was unaware of the process. I walked in the store, went to the counter, and was greeted by a not-so-friendly employee. She had brown hair, a frumpy dress with her bra hanging out, a dermal piercing in her chest and her right hand, and eye makeup that looked like she just threw on.
terrible staff - terrible customer service
I have previously shopped at Plato's Closet in the Woodlands and I have been able to leave as a happy buyer. However, when I went in to sell my nice clothing, accessories, and bags, I am sad to say that I left knowing that I won't go back to there ever again.
Like I said, I had never sold my clothing to the Plato's Closet in The Woodlands before, so I was unaware of the process. I walked in the store, went to the counter, and was greeted by a not-so-friendly employee. She had brown hair, a frumpy dress with her bra hanging out, a dermal piercing in her chest and her right hand, and eye makeup that looked like she just threw on. She didn't even care to look at me. She didn't even care to talk loud enough to make sure I heard her. She just didn't care. When I asked her what the process would be, she didn't even want to answer my question, and pretty much shooed me away like a bug. She said that I would get a call letting me know when I could come back in and get my money, which she said would be an hour. However, I never received a call.
When I went in later today to get my money and clothing that they didn't want, I went to the register, and the cashier gave me what looked like all of my clothing back! They only took 10 of my items and gave me $19 for it all. I had some very good looking American Eagle jeans, Nine West belts, Abercrombie bag (with real leather trim and handles), Victoria Secret bags, Hollister bags, and Anthropologie tights. I asked them if they wanted to take any of the bags, and they hadn't even looked at them! The employees (and what I assume was the manager or owner with short blonde spiky hair) had to 'deliberate' about whether they could sell any of the bags and the cashier said that they were too used! They clearly were not and they are in great condition.
I went back to my car and looked at what they didn't take. I was surprised that out of my 4 bags, they didn't even look through 2 of them! I know that they didn't look through them because the clothing was still as perfect as I put them in the bag!
To conclude:
- don't go to the Plato's Closet in The Woodlands if you want to sell clothing.
- don't go to the Plato's Closet in The Woodlands because the employees will treat you like a pest.
- don't waste your time at the Plato's Closet in The Woodlands.

You are absolutely wrong platos closet has to be the #1 best store in my opinion. when i went there the staff was very nice. And they only say they couldn't take your clothes because they were to used as a way to saw i don't want that stuff. I don't think people will buy.
I get you had a bad time but telling people not to shop there is wrong.
unfair
I've taken my daughters to shop a Platos closet a couple of times and I thought it was a great deal. Well when it came time to clean out their closets I thought well let's take your items to Plato's Closet, you can make a little money, and maybe purchase some more items. Make a "little money" was absolutely correct. They gave me under $15.00 dollars. I was shocked. My daughters had clothes that were brand new (7 jeans never worn, guess, gap, hollister, etc.). I took the money, and vowed not to ever bring them anything else. I ended up spending more. It is a great place to shop, but do not take your items. You are better off selling them on ebay, rummage, or a regular consignment store.
I've read all the comments, and is it a requirment to be rude, and disrespectful to work there. I did not put this in my first comment, but the staff with the exception of 1 person was rude, not helpful, and I overheard them making fun of the stuff that was brought in. Human nature I understand, but there is a time and a place. NOT IN FRONT OF CUSTOMERS.

THEY HAVE TO MAKE A PROFIT! if you want more money...sell them yourself. it costs them money to have someone go through your clothes, cash you out, tag them, put them on the floor, and then resell them to someone else. not to mention general operating costs like rent and utilities.
it is a business... you said yourself that it is good to shop...so they can't give you much for something they aren't going to sell for much.
Seems like the main concern should be how spoiled your kids are, 7 jeans that were never worn.
refusal of service
went into the langhorne store to buy a few things. they had a purse on the wall. i was told it was display it is not for sale.. marcus i believe was the employee and lee was the other employee.. it was a dooney and bourke.. withe the tags.. marked 22.00.. about 20 minutes went by and iwas coming out of a beauty supply store and the purse was sol to another customer. i wanted to file a complaint with the better business bureau and file a police report that i was refused service. but i did not i just left. i intend to do something about the business practices at the langhorne pa store.. i blame ownership... i wish i knew what to do i would do it.. this has happened to me several times and other people as well friends of mine that i know.. we just stopped going there..

pretty penny and pennywise...quit talking to yourself, you're gonna get locked up for that.
this is true i saw one of the employees at columbus flea market with 3 large trash bags with platos closet tags.. all coah fendi and juicy.. a short spanish lady i do not know her name but she does have a regular spot at columbus flea market every sunday..
the langhorne that store needs to be investigated you have no idea what is actually going on in there.. it use to be okay and now it is horrible.. the employees are selling the purchased merchandise at columbus flea market in new jersey. coach bags and designer hand bags are still being purchased without receipts. and sold at area flea markets.. i thought about reporting them to coach royalty infringement..
a complete dissapointment!
I heard there was a Plato's Closet, cosignment shop opening about an hour from me so I was excited to check it out when it opened! They were taking clothes months before so I went a few weeks before it opened to try to sell some clothes. I didnt really know where it was so when I got closer I called to see which exit to get off.. I asked them about ten times and it turned out to be the complete wrong exit.. called again.. gave me another wrong exit.. after 2 hours I finally got there. When I was on the phone.. and DID tell them I lived pretty far and just got an hour out of the way lost they did not tell me they had a 4 hour wait time to look at my clothes. So when I finally got there and they told me that I was furious. 2nd time i went there was the week after they opened. Got a little lost again.. got there and they told me there was a 4 hour wait again.. the one guy remembered me and said ok this is yours second time here and you arent local so we will look at them.. Id say I had about 30 brand name tops, 10 pairs of jeans, 3 pairs of heels, 4 pairs of flats. Everything brand name and lightly used. While they looked through my stuff I looked through the store. The purse selection was ok, the clothing and shoes were 100% out of style. ALL of the sneakers were so old and in disgusting condition.. the heels were OLD styles, the jeans were mainly flare.. no hip skinny jeans. There were about 2 pairs of jean shorts.. that were a mess, way too many pairs of ugly plaid shorts, tons of NON brand name items. They ended up taking half my stuff, I only got $45, I expected at least $90 or so because they were high end brand names but I just took the money, the clothes they didnt take were probably the nicest I had in the bag? I was VERY dissapointed because I was waiting for this store to open and I was excited. Im positive they take styles from beyond three years ago.. even though they say it has to be the last 3 yrs styles. I did not find one thing.. It was so crowded and smushed together after a while I didnt even feel like looking through the rest. AND the few things that were decently new/in style were RIDICULOUSLY priced for a COSIGNMENT SHOP. For example.. decent pair of Victorias Secret sweat pants.. $20! I can pay $5-10 more and get them brand new in the store! PLATO'S CLOSET WAS A DISSAPOINTMENT, DONT WASTE YOUR TIME.

I went to Plato's closet for the 1st time, to sell a lot of my clothes, found out my dress was missing, my expensive name brand dress(my most expensive item out of all my stuff) and they said they never saw it, Plato's closet is the worst store ever, neverrrr go there.
I brought in a new Free People top with tags attached. It had been purchased a year ago and never worn. The tag said 78.00$. They offered me $4.90 for the shirt. I couldn't fathom handing over this shirt for 4.90. What perplexes me is that there are vnecks from victorias secret all over the store. They were probably originally purchased for about 25% of the $78.00 spent on the free people top. So are these people only getting $1.24 (25ish% of 4.90) for their vnecks? And that is of course assuming they are new with tags attached. Many of those vnecks I assume are worn, so the 1.24 would be further reduced. Is this really the case? It just seems that unless you want to sell a lot of stuff, youre barely going to make enough money to cover your gas getting there. I was shocked at the prices I was given, and I went gome with all of my stuff excluding the old uggs which I sold for good money. In case anybody was curious, I did end up selling that free people top for 35 dollars on ebay. If any employer could shine a light on my questions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Honestly, this place is the best place I have ever worked. The management and staff are some of the nicest people I have ever come in contact with. The two store owners and the managers are literally the best people I have ever worked for. They are flexible with you schedule, take time out to tell you that you're doing things right, and make you feel extremely appreciated. I have nothing but awesome things to say about this place.
@Ashleyshopper345; I would just like to point out some illogical statements in the above post. How is Plato's Closet at all responsible for you getting lost a second time? I'm not sure if you're familiar with the internet at all, which I believe you are seeing as how you found this site to write this post, but there is this thing out there called Google maps and it can easily give you directions to anywhere. As a frequent customer and seller, to me your complaint about the 4 hour wait couldn't be more rude to the employee's there. I would rather the staff take their time going through my items than quickly glance and shuffle through my bags. What would you suggest they do when customers bring in ten garbage bags and they are required to go through every item individually? What makes you so special that you should be pushed to the front of the line? It's funny to me that you describe the store as being out of style when they only take items that have retailed recently. If I were you I would consider getting your eye sight checked because I have bought nothing but skinny jeans there and in fact they pass on all flare jeans. Her's the part in your post where I need a little clarification. You complain that you only got paid $45.00 for your "brand name" items, but in the store Victoria's Secret sweats are priced too high, so would you have rather walked out with a $20.00 as opposed to what you got so the store could price those sweats at $6.00? I think you may need to do a little research when you say you can buy Victoria's Secret sweats for around $25.00 when they in fact retail between 39-70. Yes Plato's Closet is a business so therefore for them to continue to give customer's a quality product for cheaper than they would normally find it, they do need to make a profit. I know it sounds silly a business trying to make money and stay open but these are things people need to realize. Everyone has something to complain about no business can be perfect, but I feel like nothing you have stated has any logical basis and these statements should have zero impact on future customers of Plato's Closet.
I am also an employee at Plato’s Closet and have nothing but contradictory opinions to the prior grievances. I am going to address each complaint in condescending order as they appear above.
Consignment Shop:
Plato’s Closet is not a consignment shop, hence us preferring not to be labeled as one. There is a large array of differences starting with payout. Plato’s Closet pays out about one third of what they will retail it for in the store, where as a consignment shop will pay out on average of fifty percent of what they sold it for in the store. There is a very specific reason that Plato’s Closet chooses to pay out this way and there are many advantages and disadvantages to both scenarios. Consignment shops do pay out more money if they sell your item and this is due to the smaller risk they are taking for accepting your merchandise. If it does not sell they simply hand the clothing back to you and all they have lost is processing time and a miniscule amount of shelf space. Plato’s Closet pays out a smaller percentage of their retail margin because of their increased risk in buying your clothes outright from you. If they do not sell the selected item, they do not ship the item back to you and say, “oh well, we tried”, they cut their loss on the investment after already paying for the products. This would also explain the augmented standards for which clothes they do choose to accept. There is also the payout period. If you would prefer to wait for over two months to receive your compensation after the item is sold, then consignment shops are probably a more adequate fit for needs. Many people praise us for paying cash on the spot and continue to tell us that the consignment shop process is nothing but a hassle and an inconvenience.
Customer Service:
I have only one word to describe the “they do not train their employees to be friendly or helpful” statement, and that is simply ignorance. I have worked for many retail stores in the past and none have come even close to adhering to the standards of excellence the owners of this store set towards customer service. Staff meetings are held on a weekly basis, and the number one dwelling point of each one is, how do we improve on customer service? It begins sounding like a broken record after a while, but it is what sets any business apart from the competition. I personally feel extraordinarily satisfied that from the over three thousand customers that have been through this store, two manage to find minor things to complain about, one of those being a disgruntled employee who was terminated. If we were to have deplorable customer service we would not still be in business to this day.
Salary Cut:
I will wait to address the salary situation in my closing arguments which will help portray the reliability of this complaint as a whole.
Skinny Jeans and pointy toed shoes:
Ms. Peacock obviously paid no attention while attending work for those two months, because we repeatedly requested our customers to bring in the skinny jeans, it was specifically what we were looking for. We continually denied any flared denim and even went as far as measuring the length of the flare to make sure it was within a certain criteria. Skinny jeans are “in” and we do cater to recent trends and styles, which if we did not, we would not continue to be in business. As far as the pointy toed shoes go, we are extraordinarily selective on which ones we do take; this does not mean we do not accept a single pair. We choose to be wary of this style of shoe because they always manage to find their way to our clearance rack. We lose a lot of money being under selective on the pointy toed shoes, and as you all know we are not in business to lose money.
Plato’s Cash:
I have been an employee here for over two years and have never handed anybody Plato’s cash in exchange for returned merchandise. We in fact prefer to do the opposite, as customer service does come back into play here. We are more than happy to refund any customer that comes back within our seven day policy with tags still attached as our contract states at the bottom of each receipt. Items are not returnable or refundable if any of these conditions have been disregarded, with the exception of accessories which are all final sale. Having said that, I do not know how many times I have requested permission from the owners of the store to make an exception to these rules and have had absolutely no disinclination to make any exceptions for the customer. I wouldn’t be able to count the amount of times we have gone out of our way to inconvenience ourselves in order to convenience our customers.
Nerdy and rude owners:
I had the “privilege” to work with the person who wrote this complaint and this portion is by far the most baffling complaint of them all. His name is Joey, and there wasn’t a thing in this world that the owners of this store did not try to help him with. When Joey was first hired for this job, he had no money and asked the owners for an advance of almost a thousand dollars, in which they did not hesitate to hand him in order to hold him over until his first pay check. As I’m sure you can guess, they were never paid back for this loan. Joey was put under a one month trial period to make sure he was competent to manage Plato’s Closet, for this one month he would receive managerial pay. During the first week, Joey called off two days and was late two of the six days he was scheduled. He gave the owners a ridiculous excuse, and they decided to give him another opportunity. After the second week he had racked up five sick days and had been tardy four of the other days, anywhere from one hour to three hours each day. Needless to say, Joey was not responsible enough to manage a store, for he was not responsible enough to get to work on time if at all. They kept them as a normal employee for another month or so, which I will never understand, but beyond my control. Joey was terminated shortly after these incidents for larceny. He was caught stealing money out of our cash registers and attempting to smuggle merchandise out of the store. This gives you a general description of why he may not have had such a pleasurable experience throughout his two months of working at Plato’s Closet.
As anybody that has been to a Plato’s Closet is well aware, we are nowhere near perfect, and that is in no way what I am attempting to imply. Although we do try exceptionally hard to be, it would be an unreasonable and unachievable goal to achieve. You must also understand that we employees are not all fashion majors at the worlds most recognized fashion institutes, but are eighteen to twenty year olds working a minimum wage job day to day like anybody else. We are all liable to make mistakes and everyone does manage to do so from time to time. All I am attempting to do with this post is to help reconcile some of the unreliable slandering of a business that a lot of people have invested so much time and money to make it what it is today. I hope you continue to support the business and the local economy it is helping to sustain. We sincerely appreciate all of our patrons, and suggest bringing your complaints to our attention and see what we can do personally to refurbish any wrong doing on our behalf. We appreciate every penny of business that comes through our door and we plan to maintain our high standards of excellence we have set for you the customers.
I worked there once, for about 2 months. They do not like to be labled as a consignment shop, however that is what they are, whether they like it or not. They do not train thier employees to be friendly or helpful. They are a rude family owned company that refuse to offer a smile, let alone any help finding anything. They offered me one salary, and within a month, lowered it for me after i had quit another job in which i loved. Biggest mistake of my life. They only buy items that thier staff personally wants to buy. They belieove skinny jeans are a waste and that pointy toed shoes are a thing of the past. Look in any fashion magazine. You will see they are current. The place is a joke, and care little about thier customers. I would say there were so many complaints daily, that it was just easier to "ignore" them. I do not recommend traveling any real distance to shop here. You will get the item home, realize there is a spot and thier idea of making you a happy customer, isnt to return the item, it is to give you $5.00 in platos cash, so that you can waste more gas to shop there. The owners are nerdy and rude, with no flare for fashion. They constantly pick on customers and degrade what they bring in to sell. Wow what a joke.
don't waste your time trying to sell to them.
Okay so, I went there with 2 bags full of popular clothes from Hollister, Aeropostale, Charlotte Russe, etc. All of them were in perfect condition and about a year old at the most. The cashier said she would go through them. So while she went through them I looked around the store and I came back when she called me up. She offered me 2 bucks and said she could only take a necklace I brought in. On top of that she had an attitude about it. You'd be better off donating your clothes because they don't even take the ones they say they will. I'm not even wasting my time with Plato's Closet again.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
They dont take items that are out of date. They buy NEW TRENDY AND CURRENT STYLES.
A year old and in perfect conditon? Unlikely.
sell your clothes on ebay instead
If you've ever thought of selling your clothes here, don't! Sell on ebay instead! I had a few higher end clothes which I usually take to a local consignment shop but missed the summer cut-off, I didn't want to donate these because a few had tags on them yet & had too many to list on ebay so I thought I would take them to Platos..I had never been there before & the local news said it was a good place to buy and sell...WRONG! I walked in and was told I'd have to wait 45 min. buy a very snobby girl. So I looked around, what I saw was outdated, dirty clothes...I've seen better clothes at Goodwill while looking for a Halloween costume!...plus they were overpriced! There was a pair of boots that I swear was from 1990! After all that time they took my older clothes and gave back the newer ones? Funny since she said things have to be no more than 1 yr. old! I contacted the owner & she pulled the pieces I told her shouldn't have been bought & apologized for eveything & she offered me a gift card to come back, which was nice of her but I politely declined...there was absoultely nothing in there that I would wear, I guess that's why the racks were so full, no one else wants it either! When AE & Hollister have clearance you can buy the stuff cheaper new than Platos sells it for used! So if you even think about selling (or buying) visit ebay, craigs list or your local consignment shop!
Wow, I post one comment to try to warn others not to make the same mistake I did & sell somewhere else and all I do is get verbally attacked by people who sit around all day & have to put their two cents in...amazing!
This was my first time...I will never go there again. Retro may be fashionable, but these clothes were just plain worn out & nasty.
Do you people even read...I didn't walk around & pull everything out & show the owner...I emailed & told them about a pair of boots which were disgusting & worn out looking. No one said everything can be 100 percent perfect but they claim to be so picky with what they take and then sell worn out, dirty, out of style clothes!
Um, I didn't say they didn't take my clothes, I said they took the older ones...and I'm advising people to sell elsewhere if they want to make more.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I agree with Drake54, you walking around pulling out everything that they shouldn't have bought and showing the owner is very rude. People make mistakes and not everything on a used clothing store floor can be 100 percent perfect.
You seemed to take this too personal. Why would they not buy YOUR clothes when that is what they do. Something just doesn't add up.
they only take junk!
WOW! Is all I can say! I went to Platos Closet with lots of brand name clothes that I bought THIS year and maybe wore once...what can I say I get bored easy!
They took several items, mostly crappy t shirts and some shoes. They gave me back tons of Bannana Republic, Arden B, and BeBe! They really not friendly girl behind the counter says "these are the items we didn't take due to showing some wear and older styles!" Really? They need to be trained to have a response that is actually accurate! I ONLY took things bought in the last year due to reading the store "How it works" policy on the web site! What was in the store was RAGGED out and mostly not name brand! So I tested my theory and went to the mall and bought a few things from the most trendy stores. I took them straight to the store and what do you know! "These are the items we can't take due to showing wear and older styles!" I said really I just bought them 10 minutes ago. The girl just stood with her mouth wide open.
Platos Closet is a really great concept, and I don't expect to make a fortune off of my used clothing. Actually I would be happy to exchange what I don't wear for other things I like!
If they want crappy clothes that are off brand as opposed to clean in style name brands, then that's what the store needs to advertise. What is in the store in Columbia SC is really not good and very out dated for the most part!
I actually ended up selling all of those clothes for $100 on craigslist the next day. Hmmm imagine that!
Oh and just on a side note. I took some of the same items back to the store another day that they wouldn't take the first time. A different girl went through my stuff, and guess what? Several of the items that were "older styles and showing wear" the first go round this girl kept!
I have told all of my friends to stay far far away! Taking our clothes to a fabulous consignment shop in town!
They may not give cash up front, however they appreciate good taste and REAL name brands (not Forever 21 Crap) and you get real money for your stuff! Not this $30 for a whole bag of very expensive beautiful clothes garbage Platos tries to pull off!
really? my clothes are far better than those on your racks.
Today I made the 30 min drive out to the "local" Plato's Closet, hoping to sell some of my clothes. This was the 2nd time I attempted to sell my clothes there. The first, they bought 6 items, Old Navy shirts that were nothing special and 2 pairs of jeans. I got a total of $25.50.
I tried my luck again today. I dropped off 3 large bags of clothing, all purchased within the past year and still in good or even brand new condition. They rudely told me it would take at least 3 hours. To pass the time I decided to scour the racks until I found the clothes that I had sold weeks earlier. I found my 4 Old Navy shirts, all priced at $8, my pair of American Eagle jeans, priced at $25, and my designer pair of Earl jeans priced at $40. They were selling my clothes for almost $100 when they only gave me $25 for them.
As they carelessly trashed through my clothes I could hear them criticizing almost every item and complaining (and openly swearing) endlessly of how they hated going through peoples clothes. Now, I'm not quite sure but isn't that kinda sorta what you signed up for? Two girls went back and forth saying things like, "Eh, I wouldn't wear this so we're not gonna pay for it." and, "I feel like no one would buy this, the color is ugly." Sorry for maybe sounding stuck up but, when I bring in 3 bags full of mainly Express, New York and Company, Hollister, American Eagle and Victorias Secret, half still sporting their original price tags, and they don't buy them...thats ridiculous.
I ended up walking out with $4, earned from selling one pair of PacSun jeans.
They told me they didn't take my other clothes because of their condition. I'm not quite sure how the condition can be bad on new clothes with price tags.
My stuff was way better then what they had on their racks. Maybe they should try hiring people with fashion sense and manners.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
then don't go there. period.
WoW! I can't even tell you how true all of this is! My experience exactly! WHAT A CRIME SCENE PLATO'S CLOSET IS!
These comments are completely on point. I brought in items purchased within the past year. Leather boots, leather purse, both trendy/current, express jeans, Lucky Jeans, Joe's Jeans, and I can't tell you what else that are still very current. Three bags of very upscale stuff (all in sizes 4-8 by the way) . I hated to sell them but I have so much! Anyway, it's like the girls at the store had no clue what's in style -- they offered $40.00 for $900.00 worth of stuff claiming "well the computer gives the pricing"! OMG WHAT A RIP OFF THIS PLACE IS! DON"T SELL TO THEM. Keep your dignity. Don't sell there. They are either clueless or thieves!
Frenchie, if you think your clothing is worth so much then sell it on Ebay or Amazon or Craigslist.
I agree with this person's complaint...I UNDERSTAND the buisness and tacticts of price margins and profit and such...thats not the issue. HOWEVER...the issue is that I agree with the point "my stuff is better than what you have on your racks" AND the attitude of the people who work there. I went to my local Plato's closet yesterday in ORANGE, CT...my 11yr old sis wanted to go and I brought a bag of things that dont fit me...as Ive lost weight...and figured I'd give it a shot. Ive worked in a similar consignment shop so I know what it's like and all my things were freshly washed...or new with tags...and even ironed! Of course they took all my really nice and expensive items (7 items)...gave me 20 bucks back...not the issue. HOWEVER...the things they did NOT take really shocked me and so I had asked "why?". The clueless lady behind the register started spouting off this almost rehearsed speach..."the items were old, styles or tags out-dated, and the brands weren't all that popular" ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?! There were 2 button downs from AE, hoodie from AE, tshirt from A&F, bag from the gap, ked's sneaks (never worn) and are very popular right not, Nine West heals and converse sneaker flats...and a couple of belts. I work retail and I KNOW and have a sense for fashion...there's no reason for this UN-fashion savy RUDE lady to tell me their out-dated styles and arent decent brands. I was completely embarassed as she wasnt quiet either and even went further to say, rudely "just because there's a tag on it doesnt mean that its NEW". If it wasnt for my 11yr old sister...whome I promised to take shopping there, I would have walked out! I mentioned to them that it just did not make any sense because as I was walking around shopping...there were MANY items that were out-dated and well past its "gently used" mark. I did end up walking out with a pair of panent leather heals for myself...and come to find out there was a mark on the toe that I hadnt noticed in the store! Like I said I understand the buisness as Ive worked in a consignment shop before...but to be totally humiliated and ripped off in a way of TIME, ENERGY, and GAS...Im extremely dis-pleased. If the items were not good...its whatever...dont humiliate me! Their not getting my buisness...and I will continue to give my clothes to charity.
Some of the original post sounds plausible and some ridiculous (like the markking up of what they bought from her the last time - imagine that!).
I have been to Plato's in Syracuse while at school and here at home in GA. It is a great place for what they do - provide a better option than consignment.
Did you ask to speak to a manager? Personally, I like to confront situations like this directly before lodging complaints on the web. Usually management cares enough to make some effort to make customers happy no matter what kkind of business you are visiting.
manager
Junky products, priced wat too high, Manager/Owner is rude, undignified, unclassy and has no business knowledge and experience. Needs to be replaced by Franchise or whomever. Sad for employees in there. Would never reccomend to anyone and will never enter there again. Want all to know in Reno
I took two whole garbage bags of my old name brand clothing. Hollister, Abercrombie, Aero, American Eagle. Most were not much older than a year, year and a half. They took 3 shirts and 2 jeans... They said all the other items were not in style anymore, yet they clearly were. I mean they all have the company's name plastered across the front anyway. Sometimes the girls working here only pick out what they, themselves, would wear. And not the general public and their customers. Seems kinda stupid if you ask me. I ended up getting about 25$. The rest of the clothes are still sitting in my trunk from that day. I may just go back and try to re-sell them for ### and giggles.
I recently took a bag of literally all American Eagle, Hollister and Aeropostale clothing to the Plato's Closet in Fredericksburg, VA store. No rips or stains and was offered $3.00. Two of the shirts I had purchased for my son the weekend before from Aero that he didn't like. They cost a combined $25 alone. With the tags still on them! yet I was offered $3 for the entire bag? The teen girls working there acted shocked when I told them they were crazy. They sell crappy clothes and shoes that are old and worn out. Never again.
So do you work there or did something set you off?
dissapointment
I went here with high hopes of selling some of my clothing I no longer wear, my mom and I PACKED our car with probably a total of 8 trash bags of designer names such as brand new express jeans with tags American eagle jeans barely worn hollister jeans barely worn brand new forever21 clothing with tags and Steve madden shoes along with a lot of abercrombie and fitch clothing all purchased within the last year to year and a half they went through out stuff and offered us only a total of $100.35 for a brand new forever21 dress and a new pair of Steve madden heels and abercrombie jeans, and a bunch of other items worth a lot more than what they offered. And we came home with our other 7 trash bags. As for the merchandise in the store, it's nice but the markup is absoultey rudiclious they had old style hollister shirts and were asking $10 for them and they had forever21 jeans (which you can buy new in the store for $12.50 or less) that were well worn and were asking $15 for them. The store was very small and packed with clothing, personally i dont think they shoudl even sell forever21 clothing because in forever21 the clothing is so cheap and is good for only about a season until it goes out of style, and they were trying to sell year old tops for the price of a new one. I would not reccomend going there at all. You would be better off donating your clothing and having someone in need recieve them.
Okay, here's the thing: Consignment Shops are not obligated to take anything that they feel that can't sell or they just don't want. I don't understand why people get so insulted when these shops won't take their items.
i agree, i was selling stuff there today and i had put everything neatly in bags and the ### behind the counter didn't even go through the bag. the jeans at the bottom were still folded perfectly and so were a few shorts, and then everything else was thrown back in on top.
managemnt sucks in langhorne
went into the langhorne store twice and both times found designer purses and when i went to purchase them they were taken down and i was told they were the owners personal coach bags.. first of all platos closet is not suppose to be purchasing coach bags and also a juicy bag.. there is a young blonde girl in there that is awful.. she said she couldn't sell me the ugg boots they were being held for someone.. the store is run awful management is a joke can't believe this woman has not lost her franchise yet..
i can't believe the nonsense in the langhorne store.. we stopped going there they purchase designer handbags and sell them to the person who will pay the most
i totally agree the langhorne platos closet is terrible.. they have things on the wall for sale and when u go to purchase them you are told we cannot sell them . they are being held for someone.

You do realize how stupid you look when you respond to your own post right?
rip off to sellers!
I spent hours cleaning out two closets of clothes to take to Plato's Closet. I only chose them because I knew I could get the money for the items right on the spot. When I got there, she said she would only take one bag, even though I only had two medium sized bags. Strike one. Then, she told me to come back in a few hours because they have to inspect it all. Now, before I go any further...I was a label [censored] in my teenage years. I had Abercrombie jeans, Banana Republic tops, Juicy Couture galore. I only gave them things that weren't worn to death, so I figured I'd have a good shot at getting some money. Three hours later, had lunch out, and a drink at the bar and a game of pool later ... they were finally done going through my ONE bag. Out of an entire bag ... and three hours of waiting ... they took 4 things and gave me $11.25. Really.
Plato's closet is literally the biggest waste of time and you will get pennies for your stuff that I'm sure you paid good money for at some point. I'd rather give it to a homeless person on the street, than waste my day for $11.25. Plato's sucks. Go elsewhere to sell your clothes!

I dislike the store myself. We just got one in my town and i decided to give it a try. I wanted to get rid of some of my old clothes because I'm planning on moving across country soon and can't take all my clothes with me. Its really simple. I wanted to liquidate my clothes into cash quickly. Tax returns are too slow and only come around once a year so goodwill was out of the question. I sold three pair of shoes, nine fitted caps, and a jacket. For this I only recieved about $34. I was very dissapointed because the clothes were in great condition. I am not angry however because most of these clothes were older than two years so I know the value had depreciated greatly, but still it was a great loss. I wouldn't reccomend the store unless one is really desperate for quick cash.
I buy & sell to my local pc alot. They don't have that bag restriction rule which I totally agree is a huge strike and crap. But hold up on the rest of your comments. You said in your teenage years you were a label [censored] but now you're going for beers, etc. That means your stuff is old. Hello who wants to buy clothes from 3+ years ago even if it is abercrombie or juicy. My mom wears banana republic. Hey we all need some cash but get real.
Wow whatbPlatos store was that? All the stores are notlike that
What Plato's store did this?
horrible customer service
I must agree with the person who originally wrote this email. Today, just about 2 hours ago, the manager of the store was so rude to me she did everything short of spitting on me. I really love Platos closet and I was certain the owner would want to be made aware of the situation. I phoned one of the other stores nearest to The Woodlands, I believe it was the FM 1960 location, but it could have been the Willowbrooke location. I told the person who answered that I was trying to get in touch with the owner of the Woodlands location and she told me this was the 5th call she'd received from a customer complaining about the rudeness of The Woodlands Manger this week. Can you imagine, the 5th call this week? It's only Tuesday! She tried to help me and explained that most of the other locations around Houston are owned by the same person and they have a district manager that manages these location, but unfortunately an individual ownes The Woodlands location. She was wonderful and apologized (made me feel a little better, even though they have no connections to The Woodlands location.)
I drive to Katy, Texas a couple of times a month. I will be sure to take my business there. I think the manager in The Woodlands would be a good bouncer, but she has a lot to learn when it comes to customer service. It appears to me that she's looking forward to drama at the front desk. Not a good thing when you're trying to run a new business. Hopefully the owner will read this post and contact both the Humble and Willowbrook stores to confirm they are receiving multiple calls this week about the disrespectul, aggressive, rude manager in The Woodlands. The new employee standing beside her today was in shock and very uncomfortable at her manager's behavior. I felt really bad for her. I hope the owner considers finding someone who will help her business thrive. Many of us will be waiting to see if she's listening and takes action.
If the manger of The Woodlands Plato's Closet would truly like to hear from me and the other customers about our experiences with the brunette manager (I believe she has a lip ring) and the experiences of the other patrons being upset daily, I would like to suggest she have her phone number or email posted near the register or on the front door. I imagine her phone will be ringing off the wall in no time. I hope it's not to late, I'd love to have a fabulous Plato's closet within miles of my house. I have been unable to locate any contact information for the owner of The Woodlands Plato's Closet on their website. I tried to phone the corporate headquarters, the folks that own Plato's Closet, as I'm certain they'd be shocked at what I learned today but they were closed when I called. I too agree 100% with LiveToShop2010 and obviously their are many of us. Have a great day!

THE WOODLANDS PLATOS CLOSET SUCKS! THE BEST ADVICE SOMEONE CAN GIVE YOU IS TO GO TO THE 1960 ONE. ITS KINDA FAR BUT WORTH THE DRIVE TO BE TREATED RIGHT. THE STAFF IS EXTREMELY RUDE AND ESPECIALLY THE MANAGERS. THE [censored] ### THAT IS THE STORE MANAGER WITH MULTIPLE COLORS OF HAIR IS VERY VERY RUDE I CANT BELIEVE SHES A MANAGER AND ALL THE OTHER MANAGERS ARE DUMB AS MUD.
OMG! I live in another state and the first time I went into a Plato's Closet to trade in clothes the girl was SO RUDE. She acted like I was stupid and demanded me while rolling her eyes to come over to the counter, threw a piece of paper at me FILL THIS OUT, is all she said to me. She looked at maybe 2 pieces of clothing. I had maybe twenty pieces, she wadded up the ones she looked at and in a snotty tone said we can't take any of this, and walked away. I was so shocked! I don't know if she was having a bad day or what but she should never treat customers that way. Years later I actually ended up working for Plato's closet, and I believe the policy is if the employee gets 3 strikes against them they are to be terminated. So with 5 I think she will. Good luck!
not honoring discount cards
Plato's Closet is a clothing resale franchise so I am not complaining about all of the Plato Closet stores - just the one in The Woodlands, Texas. This store, like the other Plato's Closet stores, have issued customer discount cards that the customer can have stamped for every $10.00 purchase. Once all of the "coat hangers" have been stamped, the customer can get a 20% discount on their next purchase within a 30 day period of time, and on the card it clearly states that the customer discount card is good through December 2011. However, when I was shopping at the Plato's Closet store in The Woodlands, Texas, this December (2010) I was informed that the store would no longer honor the cards 20% discount. When I pointed out that the card clearly stated that it was good through December of 2011, the store manager told me that she was really sorry but that the owner wasn't making any money giving such a discount and so regardless she would not be honoring the cards starting January 1, 2011.
I emailed another Plato's Closet store, Plato's Closet College Station, that I had shopped at asking them what their policy on this matter was - would they honor the discount cards or not. I have not received a reply yet eventhough I sent it about 3 weeks ago.
Not honoring cards that clearly state that they are good through a particular date cannot be legal. I have thought about going and trying to use my card on January 1st, but at this point I have decided that I am not interested in doing business with this store, or with any Plato's Closet store. There are plenty of other stores who do honor their promises to their customers and high end resale shops are a dime a dozen. Sansing
To Pobarjenkins:
Ironically, I was given the "buyers discount card" at THE Plato's Closet in The Woodlands that I am complaining about. However, I still have the card in case I decide to pursue a different course of action.
As for as going back to that store, or any Plato's Closet stores, the answer is no, nor will I.
I should of stuck to "Marshalls" or a store called "My Best Friend's Closet" in the Woodlands (Tx) which is a high-end resale shop. My advice to those in my area: skip Plato's Closet and go to either "Marshall's, " or "My Best Friend's Closet, "(if you're unopposed to shopping at resale stores). I have never had any negative dealings with, nor heard of any, from either one of those stores.
To the owner:
You can post that as of January 2011 we will no longer honor the 20% discount any month within the period prior to January 2012; however, it does not negate the fact that by law you must honor your agreement as is written on the card.
The fact that 7 of the Plato's Closets in the Houston area have decided to NOT HONOR their promise to accept the cards & give the customers a 20% off of their next purchase within thirty days, as written, only reinforces my belief that Plato's Closet stores are not trustworthy - so BUYER BEWARE!
Frankly you, and the other Plato's Closets in Houston, would have been better served not to give customers these cards starting in October 2010, rather than post a sign that you would not be honoring your agreement. Sansing
I just experienced the same problem at Anchorage, Alaska's Plato's Closet and they will not get my business again. I had my 20% discount card and was told it would not be honored as stated, but rather for only 15%. They have nothing posted and no expiration date is written on the card, nor any statement about the owner changing the terms of the card. A reputable business would honor a "promise" made to their customers. I will be contacted the owner, if the information given me by underage and naive managers was correct. They did not seem to understand the principle of the manner is what was at issue, not the 5%. I am extremely disappointed in this business and feel they are taking advantage of young customers, simply because they lack experience to understand how wrong this is.
I don't know which other locations you have been going to, but the one in front of babybrook mall is definitely honoring the stamp cards and their respective discounts, I shop there all the time. I got the discount last week.
I don't know what you are talking about. They had big signs posted on the registers talking about the changes they had to the stamp cards and the willow brook location had those stipulations on their cards for a long time. And unless you and the owner of Platos closet signed the card together there is no law that they have to take your card and give you what you want. In fact they have the right to refuse servicing your needs in the first place. It seems to me you had a bad day and are taking it out on a retail store. It's my favorite store. I go there so often they know my name and they take great care of me every time I'm there.
Actually, The Woodlands location still honors the cards.
The only change is that all of the Plato's Closets in the Houston area (7) have decided that as of 1/1/11, the cards now have a maximum value of $20. They used to be good for 20% off any purchase. However, the cap is now a $100 purchase. This change was posted at each register as of the end of October with an effective date of January 1st.
Did you get your discount card at the plato's closet that you're trying to use it at? Since some are privately owned, they may not be required to accept them.
what is wrong with these girls??
I am very displeased with the service I recieved at Plato's Closet in Manchester, CT. I brought in an entire bag of clothes which were fairly new, stainless, and in style. I left my clothes there for an hour. they were not ready when I got back to the store, though I was told they would be. I had to walk around the store for another half hour waiting for my clothes to be looked through (I believe this is done on purpose in the hopes that you will purchase more of their merchendise). When my clothes were finished being looked through, I was told they had stains? And that they could offer me 6 dollars and 37 cents for the clothes they took, mind you it was about 10 shirts and a skirt.. I left. Thank you so much for the embarassment.
I went into the platos closet in Williston, vt I brought all clean nice stuff american eagle, Levi's, old navy, American eagle, LEI shoes and all was turned down except two sweaters and a couple pairs of earrings for 11.05 WHAT KIND OF IDIOTS DO U HIRE THERE THEY NO NOTHING OF WHAT TO BUY. I told them they were a joke and a waste of time and I would never enter there store again. I will thank the idiot ### that denied my stuff though for being so unbelievably stupid walking back to vehicle a woman and her daughter saw me carrying box of shoes out made $100.00 outside from woman and her daughter 2 pairs LEI clogs (denied by ###) 1 pair Anne Michelle heel boots (denied by the ###) 1 american eagle skirt (also denied by the ###) and 1 cordoroy skirt ( again denied by the ###) so in closing I will never waste my time or my clothing in there but at same time THANKS FOR BEING AND IDIOT THAT KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT CLOTHES!
YEEESSSSS! My sentiments exactly!
I went to the rochester new york location and had the same bad experience as everyone else. They said my clothes were "worn" etc. and was not offered any money for them. Many of their items on the rack were in poor condition. I don't they have a very high volume going out based on the amount on the racks, so are trying to reduce what is coming in. Ditto to being able to get better prices elsewhere.
buying and selling clothes
Plato's Closet is a JOKE. I went in there one Saturday afternoon, and i had 2 bag loads. I had 11 pairs of jeans and at least 10 tops. They went through my stuff and told me that they couldn't sell my jeans because they didn't sell those certain brands which is pathetic. It's crazy because I had a pair of caprees that I bought from Aeropostale and they wouldn't take those either. I had several american eagle and aeropostale tops and they wouldn't take those either. Instead they picked a skirt that i payed $1 for when Steve & Barry's was going out of business and a pair of shorts that i got from an outlet store called Vanity Fair. They gave me $4 for them which was some bull. They were doing everyone that way, because there were several people with bags of clothes and they wouldn't take their stuff either. Plato's Closet's commercials are misleading and i won't be using their business anymore. I recommend that everyone takes their clothes to a real consignment shop where their clothing will actually be appreciated.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Can not even stand this "store"! They will buy your items for as cheap as possible then turn around and sell them for at least 10-20% more than what they offer you. Ridiculous. Also all the Platos I have gone to are messy as hell and the employees are rude ### little ### that think they are above the customer. PLEASE! You are working at a ### store, therefore you are not a lick better than anyone. Plus most of the itemsd they do buy are usually ripped, stained, torn, half missing, etc.
customer service
I am contacting your Corporate office because I don't know who else to contact. I have visited your Woodlands store on several occasions and it has never been a pleasant experience. I have always loved to shop Plato's Closet but I am strongly considering no longer shopping there and suggesting to my friends that they avoid the store also, especially if they...

Plato's closet Sucks. I've been to that store less than 5 times and every time I've gone I get no money for my clothes. Today for example, I tried selling a hurley dress (costs around 55 dollars), an oakley bathing suit (valued at 75 dollars), and a few other big clothing brands like victoria secret, roxy, billabong, american eagle, and hollister. I got 3 dollars for a vest, a necklace from forever 21 and a book. They told me all my clothes were outdated, Everything that I had taken in I've bought them less than a year ago. I think that Plato's closet is a horrible store. I was looking around in the store just to see if i have a chance to make atleast 15 dollars, well as you know, i got 3 dollars. Sorry, $3.50. I eel that you have to be friends with the employees or know them to be able to sell your clothes. I think its bogus what they give you for the clothes. The clothes I saw there today were all worn out, they had deodorant stains, and the whole store smelled like a gross second hand store. All the employees there are always sarcastic and rude. I know I can't sell my clothes for 100% profit but I think i deserve a little more than just 3 dollars and change and for all my clothes to be bought. I'm better off trying to sell my clothes on Ebay or Amazon.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Having been a former Plato's Closet employye, I know about the buying process somewhat, although I never sorted through the clothes. The customer only recieve around 30% of what the actual selling price of the clothes are, which is how Plato's Closet receives their revenue. In regards to the clothes being "outdates, " some brands change their labels every few months, which is how they can tell if it is an older style. It also depends on what they have already in their store. If all else fails, try other Plato's Closet stores. You never know.
You must live near a poor plato's closet, as the one I live near usually has decent clothes (usually). Of course they pay out poorly. That is how their clothes that they sell are so discounted. You don't get to decide what is "outdated" or not. They decide that based on what is selling. Certain styles or brands may sell for years while another style or brand is considered "outdated" in a few weeks. I suggest donating your clothes to Goodwill. It's doubtful someone will buy used clothing for even half of what it was paid for new.

I have been to two Plato’s closets. The quality of clothes at this Plato’s is extremely high for a cost that’s extremely low (usually $5). It doesn’t surprise me that they don’t pay well for your used clothes and it shouldn’t surprise you either. The company needs to turn a profit somehow. Though I must say that I am no fan of Hollister or abercrombie clothes, so that is not what I look at. Either way, it’s important to remember that every Plato’s is different, and those people that defend Plato’s Closet can be just as correct as the people that dislike it. Overall I am a fan, but I can understand all the complaints and problems people been having lately!
thank you...very good to know., , & duly noted.
