Southside Regional Medical Center Service

My mother was sent to the emergency room by her primary physician, Dr. Ahmed, to have a CAT scan and bloodwork because of excruciating head and back pain, along with a fever. We arrived around 4:00pm in May 17, 2021. FOUR HOURS later, and after everyone who came into the ER after us, she is still waiting to be seen. It is is incomprehensible to think a patient who has been referred after being seen by her doctor would not be expedited. At hour three, I inquired with two desk employees as to the status of someone seeing her, at which time I was advised a nurse would let me know. An hour later, we had not been told a thing. Absolutely unacceptable. There has been a complete change of shift, along with new patients who have been called to the back. I approached security and the desk personnel. At that time I received the number to the patient advocates office. I have called and left a message.

Desired outcome: Better service and communication with patients.

Southside Regional Medical Center Patient information

I called to check on my sister rosa davis, she's a patient there, in 508, when I called a nurse name patrice immediately stated to me that no one was available to talk due to shift change, which I clearly understand being a nurse myself, she went on to tell me about when I should call, she then stated that the nurse had already talk to someone earlier about my sister, I am the only contact that she should have talked to about my sister, no one from my immediate family had called, I didn't particularly care for the way she handle me when I called, nor did I appreciate someone giving information to some random person that called

Desired outcome: Just asking for politeness and courtesy, it's a rough time right now, we just want know how she's doing

Southside Regional Medical Center Covid Exposure to Nurses and Patients

This hospital is purposely putting their nurses and patients at risk. Patients are coming in, testing positive and the hospital is NOT taking precautions enough to protect the staff or their patients! They are not giving N95 Masks to all nurses. They are literally requiring nurses to come in and work, even when their immediate family members are positive with Covid if they are required to come to work if they are not "showing" symptoms. The hospital IS NOT providing Rapid tests for these staff members which means they could be carrying. It has been proven in studies regular masks DO NOT completely prevent the spread of this virus! They cannot get travel nurses due to their low pay rates. They have even taken away pay from staff with the buy out by Bon Secor DURING the pandemic. These people are putting their lives on the line every single day willingly, hospitals should be under a mandate to ensure the well being and safety to every extent possible of their staff. They should be required to provide the PROPER approved PPE for ALL staff EVERY shift! They are currently offering $35 EXTRA an hour for employees to work an extra 12 hour shift during the holidays because they are so short staffed. There is not HR on site, it is through a 800 number only. This hospital has always been a small hospital with not the best resources. It is however inhumane how they are risking the staff members and the families of staff members with their current policies. They need to be held to a higher standard with protection for ALL!

Desired outcome: Rapid tests for staff, more staff, adequate quarantine time for those exposed.

Southside Regional Medical Center racism at workplace

To whom it may concern;

Hello, my name is Raheem Spady and I'am currently working with 4-West/telemetry. Lately, I've been receiving racial remarks from a Co-Worker (Rose Elder) and Racial Discrimination is something that I will never deal with. Its been going on for a while and now it must STOP. She would call me (Boy), (MonkeyMan), and etc. The straw that broke the camel's back was on last night (June 4, 2019) at 11:00 pm. I came in and spoke to everyone in a (well-mannered) way and Ms. Elder replied hey "MONKEYMAN" like that was something nice to say. This isn't the first time but it needs to be the last time. It's so sad that we have to get bullied at a work-place. Racism shouldn't be displayed in any facility and Repercussions are to be made.

I would like to also add that when I went to my supervisor for help; she basically didn’t care about my feelings because she wouldn’t have brushed it under the rug like she did. If the roles were switch; I would have got fired on the spot. But if I don’t get any justice now I will be going to the higher authorities.

Southside Regional Medical Center care

I was admitted to hospital to icu with double pnemonia... Very low oxygen level... Very poor heart rate... The treatment I received was horrible... I got no sleep the whole time in icu... You had a mental patient at the end of hall yelling day and night... The food was horrible... And a prisoner in the room next to me... You had one black nurse that was hateful and rude as [censor] to my family... I was moved to the 4th floor... Not in good shape... I fell trying to go the bathroom... Had yellow band on my wrist... I ask one of your black rn's for help to go to bathroom... She said I will get someone to help you... What is it beneath her to help me... I waited 30 minutes and noone came to help me so I took a chance going by myself... Again the food was horrible... I had to get my husband to go to cafe to get me food... The other nurses on4th floor were wonderful except for the black rn... The poor girl that tried to keep my room clean tried but your nurses thru there trash on floor and left it there... Uncalled for... This was in icu... This was the worst hospital visit I have had at this hospital... Noone offered to changemy sheets at all...in 5 days... I know this complaint will be ignored... Next time I will go to chippenham...

Southside Regional Medical Center Health Care

I went to the ER for severe spinal pain regarding a herniated or bulging disc. The worthless Sara, the physician on hand told me there's nothing she will do for me. My spine is burning, on fire, hurting, and it feels like there are nails driven into it. Southside Regional gives the utmost worst care ever. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, though my recommendation doesn't matter. Horrible care, the worst I've ever had. Avoid Southside Regional Medical Center at all cost.

This is a complaint about SRMC and their Home Health service. My son had a diabetic foot ulcer and was in the hospital on IV antibiotics. The orthopedist told him he would be discharged on IV antibiotics for at least two weeks, but the hospitalist came in and discharged him on two weeks of oral antibiotics. His foot continued to get worse even though his cultures had shown no MRSA. He went back to the hospital with the ulcer worse than the first time he went in and they put him on IV antibiotics and then told him he had MRSA which obviously was hospital-acquired. He was discharged on self-administered vancomycin and was to have his dressing changed every two days. He had it changed Friday and the nurse said there was a tremendous amount of drainage, the dressing was completely soaked and the wound was macerated and he probably needed it changed daily. No one has come back since Friday and he received a call today saying they can only come once a week and will be there Tuesday. They are not concerned that my son had to have surgery while in the hospital the last time and a portion of bone removed, and he could end up with a foot amputation. What happened to patient care. It seems all they are interested in is money. My son cannot work and has no insurance due to this problem. It is all about money. He cannot change it as he is is to have back surgery and cannot bend over that far. It is really sad that our health care has come to this. I remember what Dr. Thigpen said to me (may he RIP), "Patient care used to be top priority and now it is all about money." He never received discharge orders from the orthopedist and home health had to contact him and he was told by the nurse wound dressings would be every other day and now it has come down to once a week. His case manager at the hospital said he qualified for everything to be covered and he would not be expected to pay anything. That may be true, but if you don't have the money you are left to rot.

Southside Regional Medical Center Neglect

Dr. Khalid Khan-
I made the mistake of taking my son to Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, VA Thursday February 10, at 3:30AM. The nurses I delt with were extremely rude, did not listen, and did not act like they cared about my son at all. My son is only 10 months old and when they attempted to draw blood from him he began to cry a little, but still tried to be patient with them. They tied the tourniquet to his arm and did not attempt to find a vein until several minutes had passed. Once my son's arm began to turn purple they decided it was time to find a vein. Although they could not find a vein they stuck the needle in the crease of his arm and began to use it to dig around in hopes of finding a vein. As my son wrigled in pain one nurse cranked his wrist to hold his arm still. His father and I became very upset with the way they were handling the situation and their evident inexperience. We told them they needed to stop and give him a break but they refused to do so. They continued to try and try as me and my son's father begged them to stop. My son now has a bruise on his arm and spots from where too much blood pressure had built up and made little "hickeys" all over his arm. I would also like to add that I did not witness the nurse taking the blood wash her hand, but she was wearing gloves. She claimed she couldn't find a vein with the gloves on so she tore the finger tip of the glove off and began to try again. I was also not explained why they needed to draw blood. The doctor assured me that the only tests they had to do were two swabs of the nose. After about 3 hours of waiting for test results we decided to leave the hospital and take my son elsewhere. One of the nurses at the hospital called my cell phone and left a very nasty message. In this message she declared that I better bring my son back for reevaluation and went on to say "...how dare you not allow us to draw blood.." They then proceeded to call social services on me and I recieved a visit from a worked around 10am the same morning. My son's real doctor told me she could tell by looking at his arm the needle used was too big, the tourniquet was left on too long and too tight, and that there was no reason for the hospital to take blood or even attempt to. She also ran the same tests and the results only took 10 minutes. I would like to add that they came back negative and he is now fine. I would also like to add how enraged I am at the hospital as a whole and that my son could not bend or move his arm for a few afters. I am dissapointed that a hospital would be so rude, careless, and most of all hurtful. Now I have a note of "Medical Neglect" on my record and cannot get any county job or school job, even as a janitor. The fact that the hospital was being truly neglective only enrages me further. As far as I can see the hospital is guilty of "Medical Neglect" and should truly be shut down until some real doctors and nurses can fill the building. I am thinking about sueing the hospital for hurting my son and practically ruining my life with their ignorance. How would you feel if they had been handling your child this way? How would you feel if you couldn't get a decent job because someone called social services on you basically out of anger, not concern. The social worker even said she could see how much my son loves me and what good care I take of him. Southside Regional Medical Center is a true disgrace and dissappointment. I can assure you I will never return to this hospital and will be sure to tell everyone I know and meet to not enter this facility unless they wish to die. The last thing I would like to add is I know for a fact I am not the only person who has had a bad experience because when I went a time before that a woman showed up and her young son had a broken arm. She sat there for over 2 hours before they even took her to the triage room.

Disgusted,
Cathryn Keifer

I would also like to add that his physicial page says he does not accept children. Obviously this shows why he was so inexperiences along with his nurses.
