I've been with BB&T bank for 10 years. Today went to bank and tried to deposit $1040.00. I was told I had to have my id. I asked why, and they said it is a policy, and I could be money laundering. It's a shame that I was considered a crook by BB&T. I will be taking my business elsewhere. If that's your policy, then every bank should do it, not just 1.

Truist Bank (formerly BB&T Bank) their system didn’t register when I opted out of overdraft, now i’m stuck with fees

My husband and I's had an overdraft on our account two weeks ago (October 1-4, 2019) with $180 in overdraft fees, not knowing that we didn't have overdraft protection. Okay, that was fine since we obviously didn't have the overdraft protection, but that same week (on October 4, 2019) we OPTED OUT of overdraft (meaning no overdraft can happen) in both sections (ATM and one-time purchases, and the checks and reoccurring payments). Well we had another overdraft situation this week (on October 15-16, 2019) resulting in $216 in just overdraft fees, even though two weeks ago we OPTED for NO OVERDRAFT. Well BB&T is saying that it doesn't show in their system that we opted out two weeks ago, even though I know for sure that we did. So now we're just stuck with the $216 in overdraft fees, even though we opted out and our account shouldn't have been able to overdraft. So because their system didn't register that we opted out, now we have to suffer the loss of all that money! It ridiculous! And I would like a refund for the $216 in overdraft fees because I opted out of overdraft and I shouldn't have to suffer the loss of that money since I did everything the right way and their system didn't register that I had opted out.

BB&T has put so many 36.00 overdraft fees on me it's a normal thing every month, usually 4 or 5 every month! I am so far in debt I need to go bankrupt! They hold things on you, they put the big ones through and hold a lot of small ones so they can get as many 36.00 dollar fees as possible!! I make very little money a month and it seems like they get half or...

Truist Bank (formerly BB&T Bank) checking account overdraft fees

BB&T is capitalizing on the poorest, weakest, indigent and voiceless people of the banking industry. It is technically illegal according to the lending laws of North Carolins, it needs to be stopped and I will be damned if I will be silent any longer and continue to watch them take advantage of people while they make BILLIONS on the less fortunate. Here's why I say this and here is a short version from my personal point of view & witnessing this issue first hand. I have come to this, by tracing someone I care about's banking history, for the last year and half with BB&T.
He is embarrassed and does not want his identity revealed at this point. My son, 29 years old.

What started with an offer for "Free banking with Direct Deposit" ended up costing them so far, 15% of his salary over 1-1/2 years. Most people, especially young people, do not read the "fine print", "disclosure notices". Hell, they do not even know what a disclosure notice means much less the jargon used henceforth. I know ignorance is not an excuse, but neither is hiding major facts in fine print.
How it started? He forgot he used his card at a gas pump as a Visa card, the charge didn't show up for 3 days, not even a pending $1.00, and the cycle began of things clearing because he took some cash out thinking he had some money! Here we go:

In 9 months, this person paid over $2700.00 in fees.. 15% of their yearly income

Their allowing anyone to overdraft their account regardless of credit worthiness, as long as they have Direct Deposit Set Up! The least fortunate of its customer base are the ones suffering from this cycle and end up overdrafting their account 2, 3, 4, 5 times during one direct deposit cycle & getting charged $36 each time and another $36 every 7 days the account is not put into the positive. It can start as simple as an accidental miscalculation to end up landing you at a negative -$376.00 or more within a week. They require you to have direct deposit, big balances, big saving balances etc..., for no fee banking, so most people opt for direct deposit & most employers require it. That is how they get you. You have to pay those fees, the money paid out on your behalf, and then you need more money to pay your bills the next pay period, so what do you do? You purposely have to O.D. your account, which they graciously allow you to do for a fee. Then, the VICIOUS CYCLE BEGINS.
This is nothing more than PREDATORY lending, PAYDAY lending at it's best in North Carolina, which is illegal in N.C.
If you ask these customers, 94% were not even aware they had overdraft protection like this until it happened by accident the first time. I spoke to another woman who told me, she called customer service who told her..
."Yes mam, it's a courtesy we provide if you have direct deposit so you will not have retun items. You can have 1 overdraft ATM withdrawal, 1 overdraft check covered, 1 overdraft debit or Visa card covered and we will charge $36 each time but it's better than getting charged an NSF fee and the items getting returned anyway. You must get your account into the positive within 7 days to avoid another $36 fee just for being in overdraft"!.
So they charge them per item and then charge them again every 7 days per direct deposit cycle that the account is negative, knowing the majority of the population only gets paid on a Bi-Weekly Basis! Not to mention, they are basically encouraging them to take advantage of the service by telling them they will cover the above items (at the time the customer calls to inquire about the very first $36 fee and paid item) with what seems like a small fee if their electricity is about to get cut off, or their tire went flat on their car, or they desperately need groceries for the family til next payday, or worse, medical emergencies and they need medicines or medical care.. See this population does not have credit cards, access to legitimate credit lines, savings accounts.. They already live less than paycheck to paycheck..

Most do not even realize they have O.D. protection default until something like this has happened, and/or when they do realize it, they think, ok, here's a chance for me to pay my insurance on time so it doesn't cancel or something similar... Hey, it's only $36 dollars.
What starts as something innocent, ends up being a nightmare.

Please help me spread the word to stay away from predatory banks like BB&T, and find a class action attorney willing to do something about this. Attorney General of North Carolina #JoshStein,
I am reaching out to you on Facebook and your website about investigating BB&T. Please, someone hear us. Help me fight for those that are already lost in this nightmare.

Truist Bank (formerly BB&T Bank) bb&t lies and gives wrong information costing us a service charge that bb&t refuses to cover even though they admit they were wrong!

An employee called saying that our account would go dormant in the near future if we did not show some activity on it. 2 days later we wrote a check on it . When Synchrony Bank received it they could not get the funds because, as I was told by another BB&T employee, the first employee, at the moment of the call, made the account dormant. We were sent to collections and many hours of research later found out that it was completely BB&Ts fault, yet they will not send us the fee charged for the returned check. When I first called the branch in Del Mercado they told me there was no manager and in the same breath said he was with a client. When we went to withdraw our money, never to use this bank again I again received more misinformation and was told that the it was in the hands of the "back room" people. I asked to speak to them and the employee refused. I asked if the "Back Room" people were human and he assured me they were but they don't speak to clients. Such a warm friendly bank! We then went to another bank and opened an account there, I was also told by the new bank that some of the information I received was wrong and he was reading directly from the State of Maryland laws.
Anyone using BB&T should definitely think again.

Truist Bank (formerly BB&T Bank) wrong account wire transfer

Unfortunately, the wrong account number of my checking account was given to an international recipient for a refund back to me. The international bank says the funds were wired to my account, but they are not there, due to one digit being off. Can't bbandt check to see who's account number the money was wired to?
If the name and the account number doesn't match, how can they let the wired money go thru?

Truist Bank (formerly BB&T Bank) business loan & checking account deposits

Our company has been banking with BBT about 20 years. We received several loans from the Grafton, WV branch about 16 years ago and they were all paid off recently. When we became larger we were told Grafton was too small and we had to go to a larger town to do business loans. WE chose Morgantown because that is where we live. Since then we have received no further loans. Each time we apply we never get a denal letter just hear nothing and then we go to another bank. This last time I applied in May for funds to make repairs after a hugh hail storm destoried the roof on all our properties in Grafton. Our credit scores are over 700 and we have never had a past due. In June I was told the loan was approved. Then heard nothing. Phone calls were unanswered and emails ignored. Last week we went into the bank. Our loan officer in business funding is gone and it appears she left suddenly or was fired. Then we were told our loan was denied in June. This is August. Today one of our tenants tried to deposit their rent into the bank and the bank refused to take it because it was cash. They told the tenant that she was trying to launder money and had to get a money order. She got the money order and then they bounced the money order and took the money back out of our account. This has happened before where they refuse to allow us to deposit cash and make the person go get a money order. I am female and my partner is hispanic. Our business that applied for the loan was SanDiego Properties, LLC based in Morgantown, WV. WE operate several small businesses. All are formal enities- LLC or C Corporations. All are over 20 years in business. Did our loan officer get fired because she refused to be part of this discrimination skeem? She told me my business records were the best she had ever seen. Marlene Newlon, MS, RD, LD And we all have advanced degrees.

Truist Bank (formerly BB&T Bank) keeping cash deposits so you can run a scan of cheating hard working people out of their money

I've never in my life had a bank, including yours up until this past month scam me and many others out of their Cash Deposits made through an ATM after 6pm. I along with many others that I hear complaining whether I'm standing in line in a grocery store, or dining at a local upscale restaurant, that you now take cash deposits made at an atm after 6pm in an effort to not get hit with an overdraft/to cover potential charges that might come through after midnight on the business day, hit myself and many others with Overdraft fees! It's CASH money it should be treated as Cash. Not the BS story that "sorry you made the deposit st 9:25 pm EST (after 6pm) regardless of the fact that the cash deposit would have more than covered the day's transactions if it had been treated as Cash as it use to be not long ago and not a check, we get to take your money so we can pay the top Executives their million dollar or thousand dollar bonus' and/or their nice salary increase each year while the middle class gets poorer, regardless of their Bachelors or Masters degrees and that they work 12 to 14 hour days". Thank you for giving to the rich!

Truist Bank (formerly BB&T Bank) business checking

I have a business checking account and every day my credit card receipts from the prior day are direct deposited right into my BB&t account automatically. All of my vendors are set up on auto pay so I can't control when the payment comes out but the bank will take out all debits before applying the credit and then charge me countless overdraft fees which is a completely deceptive practice.

It's not like I'm asking them to approve charges and then I'll run into the bank in a few hours and make a deposit. The deposit is there the same time the debit is and it's a ridiculous practice! Using this trick they've been able to charge me nearly $1, 000 since I signed up with them less than a year ago in overdraft fees. I'm running a small business and my cash flow is everything. To be charged several hundred dollars in overdraft fees can completely mess up my cash flow for a day.

Truist Bank (formerly BB&T Bank) overdraft fees

BB&T is the worse bank I have ever encountered. I work in finance and accounting and understand debuts and credits as well as checks and balances but bb&t has the worse set up and they top it off with bad customer service. I have racked up almost $800.00 in overdraft fees in a 2 week time frame. I went to bed with a negative 16.00 in my account bc it didn't pull from savings to cover any overdrafts and woke up with -53.00 balance! Hours later it was -216.00! I got charged with 3 overdraft fees for 0.65 and 1.00 transactions! Ridiculous. And you have to get an attorney and summons the dept of revenue to be able to get a refund on these ridiculous fees. I hate this institution and the sad part is everyone I know that is currently banking with them say the same thing.

Truist Bank (formerly BB&T Bank) appraisal

We were gonna get a home equity loan on our place that a few years ago was valued at over 150, 000 dollars. Since that time we probably put 20, 000 or more into it, including a new metal roof, another bath, etc. We were very displeased with the man that was sent to appraise our home, and the 120, 000 appraisal that he came up with. The bank sure let us down. Our home is very nice in the town limits of Richlands, Va.
We have opened several accounts and will be closing them ...We ‘ve never had a downward appraisal . Eddie Baldwin

Truist Bank (formerly BB&T Bank) bank services

This bank definitely does not seem to care about their customers. I did the math in my checking account, even transferring $40 from one account to another. Somehow my account still goes negative by $5, and they charge me a $36 overdraft fee for five dollars. Even though my daily posted balance was still in the positive they charge me this fee. I've never known the system to show the daily posted balance, not the account balance, in the positive and still charge an overdraft fee for any kind of debit. Banks do make sure their systems re-order deposits and debits and other fun tricks to cause people to go negative, BB&T is above and beyond in this area. It clearly shows online if you look it up that they are one of the worst banks for causing overdraft fees, they rank in billions yearly.
Then I have a deposit go through and they still push through another debit and charge me another fee even though I had a deposit go through.
I called customer service and they are unwilling to waive at least one fee considering the deposit and considering I know it's the system. They will re-order debits and ACHs and deposits, but they will claim to you that timewise it worked in a manner that causes overdraft fees.
And to top it all off back in November, there was a date in which a deposit clearly posted. The same date they show after the deposit there was a debit and an overdraft fee charged. So on one date in November money was taken out with an overdraft fee included after a deposit was made with more than enough money to cover said debit. BB&T just doesn't care about us.

Truist Bank (formerly BB&T Bank) overdraft fees

I have a pending transaction which would left my account $7 negative. Which I would've had time to deposit before it cleared, but since it was a pending transaction it caused me overdraft fees totaling $108. For $7 is crazy I refuse to just lay down and allow this bank to just take my money like that. I'm sure that have to be violating some law so I will be seeking an attorney or looking to see if another suit is already in the making

Truist Bank (formerly BB&T Bank) holds placed on deposits and fees incurred

I travel often on business and my primary client makes regular deposits into my business account. So often that not only do the employees in the florida branch where the deposits are made know him, the branch manager and some of the employees at my branch in north carolina know him as well. On november 19th, 2018, my client entered the same location in naples florida that he always makes deposits into my account. Then he emailed me a photo of the deposit receipt to verify he had made the deposit, as he always does. There were no indications of a hold being placed on the deposit. The deposit receipt said nothing about a hold. The teller at the branch in naples where the deposit was made did not give any indication verbally or on the receipt of a hold being placed on the deposit.

The following day, I paid bills and used my debit card as usual. Then to my embarrassment, my card was declined for a transaction. Thinking that something was wrong, or that possibly bb&t's system might have gone down, I called the 1 800 number for after hours customer service. It was at that time, I was informed that there was a 10 day hold placed on the deposit and that I had incurred over $600 in over draft fees. Having to go back out of town early the following morning, I sent my wife to the branch to discuss the issue with the branch manager. He stated that although he didn't agree with the hold being placed, it was out of his hands. He was able to release the hold but claims he does not have the authority to refund the $600 in overdraft fees. My wife showed him the photo of the deposit receipt and she was told it was not good enough and needed to produce the original receipt in order to get the overdraft fees back.

I contacted my client who like anyone else would do, had thrown out the receipt as he figured it was okay since he and I both had a photograph of the receipt. He then contacted his bank, (wells fargo) to check if there was a problem in the deposit going from his account to my account at bb&t and maybe that was the reason for the hold. Wells fargo informed him that with in 6 hours of him making the deposit, the money had left his account electronically through automated clearing house (ach) and the money was in bb&t's possession.

This is nothing more than theft by the bank.

Therefore, this brings to us another question of what is bb&t doing with my money while they decide to hold onto it for 10 days for no other reason than to have 10 days of its use to make money first from overdraft fees and then again by having a 10 day interest free loan on my money to use to invest with. Think about it... With all the depositors that bb&t has, if they have only 1000 depositors that they are holding just $1000 for 10 days, that is having a free ten day loan on $1, 000, 000.00 (one million dollars). If they do that every 10 days over the course of a year, they are borrowing $36, 500, 000.00 (thirtysix million, five hundred thousand) dollors, interest free! And without their customers permission! Not only that, but they are charging their customers overdraft fees on money that they have stolen from their customers!

With a $36, 500, 000.00 free loan, (and that is based on only 1000 depositors at a time) if they invested the stolen money and made a measly 4% apr (and we all know that they are not settling for that little amount of return, as anyone who has ever used them to buy a house, car or applied for a consumer loan through any bank can attest) they are making a profit of $1, 460, 000.00 on that stolen money.

When I look at it in this perspective, not only do I believe that bb&t needs to change their policy, I believe that the executives and employees behind this ponzi scheme need to go to jail, as I have seen far less on episodes of the hit television series american greed!

The problem is bb&t continues to get away with this practice because they believe that joe consumer is not intelligent enough or has the energy to go up against the corporate giant that is nothing but a bunch of white collar thieves wearing suits and acting like they care about their customers.in truth the only difference between bb&t and a chicago mafia is a bank charter license. Bb&t thinks that they can get away with it, and if one or two complaints are made loud enough they can settle a suit or pay off a customer to get them to shut up about it. Look at wells fargo, they were recently assessed a one billion dollar fine for fraud and it hasn't fazed them because they paid the billion dollars with money they made from stolen money as well. Bb&t just hasn't been caught yet. Let me emphasize the yet part.
Bb&t believes they as a corporation are too large to fail. They need to take a look at some of the other institutions who also believed they were too large to fail, such as countrywide home loans, freddy mac, fannie mae, circuit city, sears roebuck, the list goes on... They also fail to realize the power of the internet and the negative press that they are getting ready to receive when I post my story on every social media site from facebook, twitter, instagram and youtube, just to name a few. And we wont list every newspaper editor that will be receiving an editorial letter from me in every city where bb&t holds a branch location.

I urge all people who have complaints on bb&t to not just stop at this web site where you post your complaint. Do as I am and make the next step and file a complaint with the federal reserve. They are the senior governing agency over financial institutions. If a lower agency is over bb&t, they will forward the complaint to the proper agency based on the complaint. If enough complaints are taken to the next level, we collectively can put bb&t back in the stone age where they belong.

"This is nothing more than theft by the bank."

Exactly right. This and a myriad of other comments warrant a law enforcement investigation on this "banking" institution. RICO charges sounds appropriate.
