bad service and no support from cust service
This is a complete joke. This is a great novel idea, if only in the hands of the right, knowledgeable people. Firstly, they lie and say that its free for 30days to use but charged my debit full amount . Then I paid 10$ total with express shipping from Florida, where its shipped from and site says should receive it within 3-10 days regular shipping and expedited 2-4 days, which I received it 5 days later and i only live in nyc. Then I get the thing, with very little instructions on the box. It just directs you to their website with all the details of how to register. There's a FAQ section that explains how to set the device up, but you have to scroll through pages for hours just to get this info. Until you finally get fed up because the damn thing doesnt work, theres an option to speak on live chat. Only to get someone more clueless than you on the other end. I spent 7 count it, 7 hours on chat with these rude, incompetent #@#$%. They are very unprofessional and rude and make sure they dont provide a cust service number or even address for complaints. Dont waste your time. They are a rip-off. God forbid you chat live with the stupidest reps Reyna or Josh. You'll wish you could drag them through your computer screen. Extremely rude and unprofessional. Dont waste your time or money folks.

refund policy
Magicjack refused to refund the unused portion of my service after I canceled, stating their policy is no refund. They expect the customer to "spread the word" about their company, but obviously only if it's a "good" word. Well, I went with another company because my magicjack worked less often than it should have; was constantly causing me to reboot my computer and had a faint signal about 80% of the time. It was also very slow to boot up every day. I asked for a refund and was told that the company didn't give refunds. Well, I don't support companies which don't support the customer. Business is a two-way street. No magicjack for me!

I would appreciate the charges that I made three (3) days ago to be returned or credit my credit card as I cannot get the satisfaction of the use of magic Jack. I have been online with several "live online agents", only to receive stalling techniques and continually transfered to yet another "top agent" - what a crock. I supposed I shall have to go to my Banks and report a fraudulent deduction to get the charges reversed. How can they continue to get away with this - seems straight up FRAUD.

I had to change my telephone number once because of the bad reception and two way line, I thought it would clean itself up, but of course it did not, and will not because this is a company that knows that their are going to be a lot of complaints and this is why they do not have customer service contact nor could you get a Magic Jack company mailing address, yes it is do good to be true. Well...I have to disagree here. I have heard a few people complaining about their MJ and I can completely understand IF you do not have adequate computer skillz.
The problem I find withe most people is they do not understand how VOIP works and how if you are band with is usage is being used up by other things in your HOUSEHOLD you will have problems.
For instance if you have a low bandwith package from your ISP. You are downloading a movie or music or maybe watching a YouTube video. This will effect your MagicJack call quality greatly. If your kids is playing XboxLive and you are trying to use the MJ...this will effect it if your bandwith is low.
Not to mention many other things that can be wrong with you computer and causing the MJ not to work so well...Possible Virus can do this also...someone could be using your computer as a drone or using your PC to access the internet without being detected. Oh not to mention if you have a wireless network and it is OPEN. The kids next door or down the street could be sucking up your band with.
I am currently living in Colombia, I have used the MJ in China, The UAE, Panama, Colombia and so far It has saved me THOUSANDS of DOLLARS calling home back to the US!

Magic Jack works for about 5 minutes and then I lose reception. I sit there with this blank look on my face, probably a dumb one, like what THE ### until the operator picks. I have to dial again.
The seond cath to this low costing phone service is you must always have the ocmputer on. What a waste of electricity to have it on 24/7 so people can get a hold of me if my cell is dead and the charger can't be found.
Electronics have always let me down. They never work when you need them to. This magic jack is REALLY cheap b/c it's a cheap piece of ###, that's all there is to it. Cell phones also suck. We should get them all for poor quality and poor service.

The Magic jack was working for a couple of months, but I was already having trouble with the service. I could not hear the other person on the other line or the call would get dropped. I plugged it into my computer just the other day and it asked me to confirm my e-mail address or my phone number and my password. I did exactly what it asked me to do in order to continue with my service. I did all that and it keeps telling me that the information is incorrect. I put in my phone number and it tells me that it is wrong. How can this problem be fixed? I tried talking to on line chat representative, but it cuts off when I start telling them of my problem. Is this a rip off or a scam where they take peoples money. It works for a while the you start having problems with it. I have tried every thing. Getting fustrated.

If you have a MJ like I do..there is always an ad on the pad that encourages current uses to purchase another year on it or 5 years for a discounted price..so these comments have given me food for thought
As for the chat, that pretty much sounds like the fedback I got when I complained about their prepaid international minutes being charged for calls that were connected BUT were disconnected when the receiving party picked up their telephone. The explanation I got was as long as I hear the ringing bell, the call is charged, even though I could NOT speak to my intended party..so I prefer to use Skype for international calls or $ 2 prepaid international calling cards so I don't waste my time and money complaining to a support desk that "CAN'T trully help"
Thanks for posting this chat. I'll just find an email address or trouble shoot myself, that customer service chat looks horrid. As for the commercial I was never under the impression that the device its self was 19.95 as they were always sure to speak of the rate of the phone service. To guarantee the 19.95 you would probably have to purchase their 5-year plan. other then that im waiting to see if the rate increases

I purchased a Magicjack in May 2008. There were always problems hearing clearly BUT the day I ordered it, I also purchased the additional 5 years, not knowing that it would not work. After using the original unit, I tried to return it because it would not work properly. But I was slightly beyond the 30 days. So, I purchased another unit and returned the one that did not work... after the technical rep agreed to this.
However, my additional 5 year purchase was never transferred to the new unit. On top of that, the NEW Unit has never worked properly either. I am very disappointed with Magicjack. It is now October 2009, and my purchase amount in excess of $100.oo was absorbed by their company, yet I have never had the use of either of their products... (2 different units).
Since you can no longer (although originally it was a very difficult pocedure) speak with anyone from the company, and it is next to impossible to be in touch EVEN BY E-MAIL; I would not recommend Magicjack to anyone.
My recommendation: Save your money, or use it with a telecommunications company that will actually allow you to speak on a telephone and make phone calls.

the worst customer service / magicjack what they don't tell you
MagicJack and Ymax Communications Corp have the worst customer service on any company that I have ever done business with.
Also, note that they only have online support. Their support people don’t have good communication skills – probably an off-shore outfit.
Their only option is online on their sales/support site. It will probably take you five to ten minutes to find the support line and get someone online.
I had an issue where the Magicjack (M.J.) would not work. They said they would send a new M.J. and not charge me. I did receive another M.J. It didn’t work either. Later I tested it with a different computer. It turned out that the computer I was originally using wasn’t fast enough to handle the M.J. – a P3 laptop with Win-XP, 512MB of RAM, and a 56MB wireless connection. For some reason Magicjack doesn’t list a minimum set of computer requirements. After I returned the additional M.J., I waited about three months to receive a refund. I started contacting them online. They would say that they would have someone in their accounting department email me as to when my credit would be processed. About five times and one month later and still no credit, I filed a dispute with my credit card company. They did get my refund for the additiona M.J. I did pay for the original M.J. and the one year of service.
Later in the year, my subscription expired. I never received a renewal-email prior to my expiration. We tried to renew online and there was as error. We contacted online support. They said they would email us in 24 hours with a response. We never received an email. Four attempts later – we asked for a manager or supervisor. We asked who the current president of the company was. They were not willing to discuss or comply with these requests. They said that they would be able to talk with us after we had filed our lawsuit. We said “what lawsuit”. Not sure where they came up with that information. Very poor customer support!
I did write a letter to the original founder of the Magicjack, about 4 weeks ago. I have not heard form them. My service is now turned off. Not a very friendly company to work with. I wonder how someone could trust this company with any of there personal information. They don’t want to be accountable to anyone. Everything they said about emailing or contacting us was never completed. Buyer beware!
I have also included some other issues that you should be aware of if you think the Magicjack phone system can be used to replace a more reliable land-line or reputable VOIP service provider, like Comcast, Vonage, or Lingo.
Cons: To have the phone available 24x7, you will need to have a computer setup that is on and running 24x7. The service is only available to ring in your house if your computer is turned on. I did have many issues with the Magicjack where it stopped working, (approx. two to five times per month). Usually the computer or some software (Magicjack software) would interfere with the M.J.’s operation. I think the computer would go into power saving mode and that would cause the M.J. to stop working; or, Windows or other software would have an update that would interfere with the M.J. service. I would say that the M.J. is not for a beginner computer user. There will be many issues that you will have to correct – with updating the computer to keeping the M.J. operating which will require advanced to intermediate level computer skills. The quality can be very bad at times with cutting in and out. You can also just have your call dropped without notice. Customer service is not responsive to issues. They say they will contact you with answers and they do not.
Pros: The price is very low. Having voice mails emailed to my email address was a nice feature.
I bought mine a week ago and have had tremedous success with it. Easy install and instantly up and running. I leave my desktop on 24/7 anyway and have for years. I've called all over the USA and nobody could tell the difference. My son ask me if I bought a new phone (He's in Iowa and I'm in Texas) The sound was so much more clear than before when I was using my Verizon Land Line. I don't understand it but who cares...It's fantastic!

Magic Jack customer service always gives you the run-around. It is quite the joke when you try to get an issue resolved. Very Micki-Mouse customer and technical support. I cannot make any decent phone calls because their mj gadget is of poor quality and definitley a waste of time and money. I paid $59.00 for their five-year plan and then it does not work half the time. I would certainly advise anyone who is considering buying one of those to stay clear of it. It seems to be a scam company because they do not stand behind their product and they refuse to refund money once they get their hands on it I found out from the customer service when I tried to get a refund for the 5-year plan. Now I am without phone service. It is truly a rip off. It is cheap technology that is totally worthless!

After buying magic jack and bringing it home, I was excited to finally save money on my phone bill. Everything hooked up ok, just as the package said. I tested out a few numbers and everything seemed fine after I went through the registration process. I had magic jack hooked up in the room adjacent to my bedroom. Two nights had gone by, and I awoke in the middle of the night to hear heavy breathing noises coming from the very room that "magic jack" was hooked up in. I got out of bed, crossed the hall, and peered into the room. The heavy breathing suddenly stopped. This very pattern continued off and on continuously throughout the remainder of the month. At the end of the month, my att&t telephone bill came in. To my surprise, the bill was a total of $3, 974.22. After closer examination, I noticed that the calls were placed to 900 numbers, which I had purposely blocked when signing up for phone service initially. So I called att&t and they investigated the matter, traced the calls, and got back to me with shocking news. "magic jack" had worked his "magic" alright! After the so-called simple set up. After "magic jack" waited for me to go to bed, this little "as seen on tv" "gadget of the year", disengaged my 900 blocking, set up an incoming/outgoing international phone sex operation on my damn computer! And it didn't stop there. "magic jack", after using the gadget over the course of a few minutes, was able to digitally replicate my actual voice. When it knew I was not home, "magic jack" made several calls to friends, family members, and even my boss's wife. Using my digitally replicated voice it made several sexually explicit phone call comments to my boss's wife such as: "hey deb, just sitting here wondering what color underwear you're wearing right now." or "hey deb, me again, your husbands favorite employee. How about you talk your husband into giving me a raise, and i'll let you know how many times he's slept with his secretary." I was fired immediately that afternoon. "magic jack" made it appear the calls were coming from my work telephone at my desk and outgoing to my boss's house. Within just over a month, I lost my job, some longtime friends (magic jack made phone calls, using my voice, and made sexually obscene, and often rude comments to some girlfriends and wives of some longtime friends), my family has all but disowned me. Oh yeah! "magic jack"... "pc magazine editors choice of the year award". "over 2.5 million sold"... More like: "over 2.5 million lives destroyed for the low price of $39.95. Don't buy this product!

i saw an ad on tv with special offer, no shipping charge if you order today. i ordered. said the magic jack cost, $19.95. no shipping, and $19.95 a year for service, and if you pay like $50, you get 5 years.
i got the magic jack. but no 30 day free trial . they charged my account right away, then charged another $50 next month. i never gave permission for that. so i called a number and could not ever get humans. only recording. so online i tried and to this day all they say is, you are wrong, listen better next time, nothing but abuse online, and so sorry, shipping $6.95, and $19.95 a year. and $39.95 for the mj. and on the tv it was no shipping and special $19.95 for the magic jack. a total scam and lies and they will go down. i am putting in complaint to fcc and bbb and consumer dept. anyone had this happen with that piece of crap company?

I hate magic jack
I got my magic crap from my mother-in-law for christmas 2 years ago. She only gave me the box it came in and a piece of paper with the email address the account was under. It worked on and off for about 6 months or so. I had multiple problems with it, firewall issues, not loading properly, then finally it saying defective device contact customer support. Haha good luck with that. Customer support what a joke, there is none. Just some people giving you short answers and some pre-typed bs over an live internet chat. No live people to talk with. I worked for over 3 months trying to get this stupid thing to work. Nothing, just frustration and a lot of wasted time. I finally had to get my mother-in-law in on the fun, they told me that I would need her to contact them with all the information, order number and her original credit card, witch I think is crap to ask someone for the cc # over an unsecured site. Any who now they finally listened to her, got her to buy a new one at 39.95, 30 day money back, and for me to send them my magic crap defective device which we paid for. The thing doesn't work... Why should I send it back to them? Its mine. I hope this saves some people from getting ripped off. It is nothing but trouble and a headache. So please if you decide to buy magicjack please take what I said into consideration.

Purchased Magic Jack online from their web site; product installed on computer with no problem, and worked fine for making outgoing calls, however, when anyone tried to call me, they received a message that this was long-distance call. I got on the live chat customer service and spent 45 minutes going over the problem with representative (he did at least try to help, and was polite). In the end, the only suggestion he could offer was to get a new phone number, choosing a different prefix under our area code. The only one listed that should have been local was Longview, however, callers Still get the long distance message. I was then advised to keep an eye on the site, as new prefixes would be added soon. However, to try this again when additional prefixes are available will cost me $10.00, as you are only allowed one free change and I wasted mine. There is also no guarantee that your choice will work, so, if the next change didn't work, I would be out the $10.00. Overall, I am quite unhappy with this, since this product was purchased to use while working remotely in my home office and now the only way my customers can call me on it, is to call long distance. Since this won't work, I am reduced to trying to do business on my cell phone, which, in our area, is somewhat unreliable. I guess if it saves me in long distance making outgoing calls, it will be somewhat helpful, but is certainly not what it was touted to be. They don't quite tell the "rest of the story" when selling the product.

They ripped me off for 50.85 charged my card then tell me my card was declined and they refused to issue a credit or send the product. T
Like many others on here I was ripped off by MagicJack. I saw the tv advertisements and checked it out on the web. Since I had used internet phone services for the last few years, I thought this would be a great thing to have. Man I could not have been more wrong. I never actually received the device to see if it works but from other reports on here apparently there are issues there as well. My beef is in billing support and being ripped off by the company itself. I use a throw away debit card for all internet purchases so in case the card gets compromised i don't lose everything, and I minimize the damages. I simply go to WalMart and add funds enough to cover the amount of purchase I am going to make. Then I go home and make the charge. When I placed the order online I was billed for 39.95 for the magicjack and 6.95 shipping. I was then asked if I would like express shipping for an additional 3.95 I checked yes on that box and approved a charge of 50.85 That was on Friday 2/13/09. Yeah I know I should have known doing it on that day. Anyhow, On Monday I thought I would follow up to see if it had shipped and to get a tracking number. I quickly found out I could not call, they sell phone systems but do not do business with phones, so no phone number. No email either. They do have a chat line so I tried that. After about twenty minutes of mostly waiting and about two minutes of actual communication with an agent I was told my purchase was on hold due to my charge being denied by my credit card company. Like I said earlier, I use a throw away card and it showed the charge of 50.85 on 2/13/09 leaving me a balance of less than 2.00. Since the charge 50.85 included all shipping charges including the express shipment, I tried to explain to the agent this charge must be in error and that I was already billed and the amount was deducted from my card for express shipping. She would have none of that and after an additional twenty or so minutes she finally put me through to the "next level" of support. I re explained everything to this person and eventually she understood and told me she would bump this up to the billing department and that my product would ship that day Monday. Total time wasted on chat just over 1 hour. I asked to speak to someone in billing and was told that is not possible. I asked for them to call me, and was told they do not have phones (odd a phone company would not have phone lines, and a BIG RED FLAG I might add.) I was reassured the product would ship and all was taken care of. I asked that at least I be emailed when billing had released the product for shipping. No email, nothing came back to me. Not an hour later a day later or even by the end of the week. On Friday, I clicked on the chat link again and here is my conversation. This company is a complete rip off. They went out of their way to talk in circles, not directly answer my questions and to for whatever reason not agree I had been charged the initial 50.85. In case you are not aware, all land line companies have an equivalent clause while advertising unlimited calling. It's to stop people from using a cheaper *home* line instead of a business line. That would like for a calling center, ok? Is that so hard to understand? What purpose could an average home user have to ask that question and NEED an EXACT FIGURE if he wasn't trying to abuse the system? Additionally, the customer is NOT always right when he becomes disrespectful or abusive toward the customer service reps, as this person clearly did.
Once again, the reps made it clear it was NOT about HOW MUCH TIME you are on the phone, it's about HOW MANY OUTBOUND CALLS ARE MADE.
How about the next time you go over to Transporter's house, you tell him to lighten up.
I'm actually happy you will never have a MJ, that's one less customer who is looking for problems and can't be pleased for them to deal with.
I've had 3 years of excellent service, I AM looking forward to 5 more.

And if they advertise their "thing" as UNLIMITED, it supposed to be, don't you think? If you are not sure here is the definition:
1 : lacking any controls : unrestricted
2 : boundless, infinite
3 : not bounded by exceptions : undefined
In my humble opinion if the company states in their commercial a phrase "unlimited phone calls" it means you can be 24/7, 365 (or 366) days a year on the phone and you won't be charged a penny.
Well, I am sure even you can see that their "unlimited calls" it's just a slogan for them - simply put a lie.

I have a magicJack, I use it every day as my primary phone number. Every now and then my call gets dropped but not as often as my cell phone. I think a rational person could easily understand that 20 times the average is going to be a HUGE amount of calls. If you use it as you would your landline, you will have no problems.
I have also had to use their customer support which was stellar. I have no complaints about it at all. The reps in this complaint case made it very clear it was not how long you talk on a call, it's the volume of calls you make.
The magicJack unit is $39.99, which is less than my phone cost. Service is $19.99 a year, but can be as low as $12 a year if you buy 5 years at a time and I think another package where it ends up being $15 a year. Are you seriously telling me you could not get your money's worth out of THAT? People like the author of this complaint and Transporter will lose out on a great service because it's not perfect, even though it's a tremendous value for the money.
This product is wonderful and I'm getting ready to sign on for another 5 years. If you can't see the value in this product, then you are possibly one of those people who complains about everything.

I understand your frustration I too had issues when I ordered 2 Magic Jacks. I tried their complaint system online. It did not take very long to realize I was talking to a computer, and to prove it I asked a football question very easy question. The computer could not understand the question. What I will say is that both my Magic Jack lines are working great and I will buy one for my teenage daughter. (she is on my phone all the time). I hope all works well for you.

Don't buy magic jack! I have now permanently disconnected 2 mj phones and chucked them into a bottom drawer. Too many complaints from people and business clients I tried to call and talk to. They complained about often hearing a "beep" sound, as if I kept accidentally bumping a button on the keypad of a phone... And I wasn't! They also complained that my voice would cut in and out like the worst cell phone service you've ever experienced.
The sad thing is that the first 2 weeks I had bought the first mj phone, I didn't hear any of these complaints. Based upon that fact, I got excited and went out and bought a second mj phone device! I should've had my head examined. Within about 4 weeks after buying the second phone, all the reception quality of my phone calls went to hell.
I have the feeling that the mj computer network has a way of giving first time customers preferential reception quality and separately dedicated transmission lines from their central servers. Then... Once your trial period has expired, they throw your phone numbers back into the 3rd rate service quality of all the other millions of idiots that went before me and bought their mj phones. It's a bait and switch tactic, and it's a scam! It's very frustrating that you cannot get anyone to talk to, or get any kind of reimbursement. So the best I can do for now is to plead with anyone thinking of buying a magic jack phone... Don't buy this piece of junk! Order a land line cable company phone, or even as a last resort, use at &t if you have to. Anything is better than this garbage technology.

blocked access to conference numbers
I have been using the Magic Jack product for the last five months. It worked just as advertised. Yesterday, however, they started blocking calls to domestic conference numbers. I use the Magic Jack almost exclusively to call conference calls for my work from home. The conference numbers are not 800 numbers and that was the reason I bought the device and service, it advertised (and stilladvertises with no disclaimer) unlimited US phone calls.
I used their online chat technical support and explained that they changed the terms of my service midway through my contract. I asked for either a refund on the product or to re enable the access until the end of my first year subscription. They eventually told me they could not help me with either of these issues and told me they were done with the support session. I then called their billing department and asked for a refund and the person I spoke with could not help me at all.
I sent an email to the CFO of the company and explained my complaint. I have not heard a response at all.
A typical consumer like me has almost no recourse for this situation. I would not have purchased the product if the original terms of the agreement included restrictions on domestic conference numbers or any domestic numbers for that matter. If I filed a lawsuit in small claims court it would wind up costing me more than the $40 I paid for the device. This company should be the subject of a class action lawsuit with penalties in the settlement to protect the little guy from predatory practices in the future.

Same here. back in 2010, I bought a majicjack to use as a second line for my work from home days. I frequently call into Bell Canada and Verizon (US) conference calls. since around mid 2012 the local numbers began to be blocked, however the 1800 numbers still worked. now it's September 2013, and I'm finding even the toll free numbers are being blocked, or just not connecting, leaving me to tie up my landline for these calls - the very thing I bought MJ to avoid.
I have 2 months left on the service before it expires...I will not be renewing it...time to look at other providers for my second "line". MJ is cheap to be sure, but you really do get what you pay for.
Their ads make no mention of all these restrictions. buyer beware.
I too have purchased MJ for the same reasons as everyone else. To save money. Now before I even get through my first year, MJ is adding charges for conference calling. This is flagrant misleading advertising. There should be a civil suit put against MJ for misleading customers. IT IS NOT FREE!
I too have the same problem. I work from home a few days a week and have been relying on a free conference line in order to speak to several of our locations at once and now I cannot due to their decision to alter the terms of service without offering incentives to the customer who was mislead into believing we could make "free unlimited calls inside the US". I bought MJ to replace my MA Bell carrier and was okay with it until that day they blocked the external conferencing facilities.
They've really impacted my business. My clients tell me what conferencing facaility to use. I don't tell them. I have to use my cell phone now for most of my conferencing calls.
MJ is definitely NOT 100% equal to my old MA Bell service.
I'd no longer recommend this product to anyone who needs it for any business use.

Meanwhile, your frantically checking your phone, your cables, and looking at that little pop-up window wondering WTF?

The thing costs $20 a year to talk to people. Even has a free voice mail. Unless the thing will not let you make calls at all then it cannot be a ripoff. I suspect those claiming it to be a ripoff are shills for phone companies, vontage, and other long distance carriers.
we bought the magic jack and when we plugged it into the computer nothing appeared. A registration page or dial pad was suppose to appear, but it didn't. I tried to figure out what was wrong but i couldn't. so i went to their website and looked for tech support. they had this live person chat feature and i tried it. for four hours, i've chatted with about 6 different tech agents and asked for help. they gave me steps on what to do and i followed it all but none of them worked. i finally gave up. i am just going to return this piece of crap. and they better not have charged me.

After seeing all the ads on television about how great, easy, and best of all, cheap Magic Jack was we decided to check it out because money is tight and we need to cut bills wherever we can. We do not have cell phones, only a home phone and our home phone bill was in a bundle with our internet coming to over $80.00 a month. That was ridiculous! So Magic Jack sounded like a great solution. We ordered it and it came days later. It was easy to install and we got our new number, set up our contact list, and started making calls. At first it seemed to work well. I could hear the other person clearly and they could hear me. I could finally call my friends long distance. I thought it was great and was very pleased. A few days later the bugs started to show themselves. Now being on the phone is a major pain in the butt and I have come to detest it. Having Magic Jack is like having the worst cell phone service in the world, but worse.
The problems I've experienced are as follows: Calls get dropped mid conversation. The person on the other end constantly hears what sounds like someone pushing buttons or dialing numbers. The other persons voice breaks up a lot and I have a hard time understanding what they are saying. Sometimes when I dial a number I get nothing but a dial tone. Sometimes when I pick up the phone to dial out I don't have a dial tone. It often sounds like someone is eavesdropping on the conversation. There is often times a delay of about 30 seconds and that gets really annoying to both parties on the phone. When I get another line while I'm on the phone, sometimes magic jack clicks over even when I've done nothing to get the other incoming call (all of a sudden the person calling in starts talking to me when I didn't even click over to answer!). When I do click over to answer the other line the person I was talking to either hears music or hears me talking to the other person I can hear both of them. That gets very confusing and I have to hang up with both people because they both think I'm talking to them when I'm not. I can hear both of them and they can both hear me but they can not hear each other. It's gotten to the point where when I call my friends they tell me that they want to buy me a cell phone because they can not stand to be on the phone with me if the only phone I have is through Magic Jack.
Their customer service is bogus and none of the issues I have are addressed in any of their FAQ's. But the old adage of "you get what you pay for" rings true time and again with this product. If you are poor or money is tight, Magic Jack is better then nothing, but if you can afford a different service, then I highly suggest it. Magic Jack is a terrible product that does not work as advertised. We will definitely not be renewing Magic Jack when our year of service is up with them!
YIKES ! 31/2 hours of trying to figure out how to change my number-ended up having to open up another browser to get the page to fully open up. After that I only got static and broken up conversations only to hear from the live chat that is you have satellite for your computer-they don't recommend it. Where was that in all the commercial hype? Noticed they already have taken the money for the 30 day free trial. Am sending this crap back and is I don't get it resoved-I will notify the BBB because they do not mess around. There statments are false. They do not tell you they are taking the money until you have placed your order. Whoever says this is a fine product are full of crap and do work for their company. Seen one submitted praise on here for this product-see it on every co9mplaint board I ever read.

Heather: Ideally, the power saving options of your system should be disabled when the device is plugged in. We have purposely designed our updated software that way because when a system goes into power save, most likely its USB ports and internet capabilities are limited which is a requirement for our device to function correctly.
Heather: There have been instances wherein customers missed important calls thinking the device is enabled while on power save. We want to prevent that from happening to you, which is why we disabled the power saving options of the system while the device is plugged in. If the device is unplugged, your power options will kick back in. Of course any calls that comes while the device is unplugged will go to your voicemail or to the number you have set up to forward it to.

Magic Jack 's advertising is false. You cannot call New Brunswick, Yukon or Saskatchewan. (last I heard, they are a part of North America). Also, there is no 911 service available to Canadian customers. I was told I needed a Canadian number for 911 services and paid $10 for that number plus $10. to change my number and 911 still does not work. Good luck when seeking Customer Service...there is none. Do not buy this product...and tell your friends.

My mother always told me not to buy stuff from as seen on tv - well magic jack is one product that I can say is the biggest money/service scam I have every come across. It all seems so cost effective and I should remind you that "its too good to be true!" this item never worked effectively to hold a line and did you know that you have to register with your town for 911 service?!?!?!?! Magic jack fried my 6 month old hard drive. Yes! Thats right it fried my brand new hard drive. I barely have had time to back up my documentation and now I have to pay for service to repair my computer. Some money saver magic jack is! For product that was supposed to save me money, its costing me money. Not including that I have to try and cancel the service that I can no longer use with through my credit card company and return a defective product to a store that magic jack will not support the returned product from. You can be sure I will send this to every telecom publisher and pc publisher I can contact. Magic jack is a joke!

As a computer and network IT, I can difinitivly say that the MJ device will not fry a hard drive. First it hooks through the USB port and that hooks to the 5vdc powersupply port and the serial bus on the main board. The only connection that the MJ device has to the hard drive is that the application software is stored there. All MJ information is stored on the MJ network server.
I have used my MJ device for about 3 and one half years. I tried to take a few short cuts on the install and had problems. I contacted customer support and while I understood everything, the instructions may be a bit beyond anyone who can not believe that they made a mistake.
My best tool for the magic jack was my patience. Once I understood all of the instructions, I had it fixed. I thought that it was a real pain until I had all of the instructions written down and installed a second device. That is when I realised that the special instructions that I got from customer service were the same as the original and complete installation instructions.
If you take shortcuts or do not follow the install instructions (which are rather simple) then you will have problems, but it will not fry your hard drive. This individual must have done something drasticly wrong, unless of course the individual is using incorrect terminology, which I think is the case.
Messing with the install procedures and doing it wrong can cause the Operationg System to "lock up" and unscrupulus computer techs can reset the registry to last known good condition( it just takes a few key strokes if you know what you are doing) and then charge for a new drive and OS install time and data recovery time and anything else that they think they can get away with. Unless you have the serial number of the HD you will never know. Really shady techs will reocver your OS then Ghost the drive onto a drive removed from another computer. Then use your drive on the next "repair."
I have had my Magic Jack for 3 years now. I am very happy with the service I get from this product. Of couse if you are using all your ram or running other heavy downloads and high performance videaos or backgrounds there will be some cutting in and out. I have found that if the speaker box on the PC. is turned off that there is no interferences. I believe this is because of screensavers or runnung programs. I do not know what everyone is expecting for $20.00 a year, I mean come on people. Of course this is not going to run perfectlly without any interference or malfunction, but this product does work and I have not ever been charged more than is expected of me yearly. Really this will save the average household hundreds of dollars a week and I have to say if you are pinching for money this is a great way to save on bills. No this is not for the person that wants high quality service and usage for close to nothing a year. This is for the average person that needs to lower bills and still have a home phone for less money, or to avoid disconnection from the services that charge way more than they should for a service that is mostly a requirement. I commend this person for putting this service out there for people that may need it's services or for emergency purposes, it shows that there are people out there that still care about grandma or the average person that can not afford home services.
Magic Jack fried my hard drive as well. My laptop was barely 2 years old so I must agree that it was the magic jack contraption which ruined my computer worth $600. I am fairly sure it was magic jack because it had only been connected barely a month before my laptop became inoperable. What else could it have been? I am now in debt for a new compter at the cost of another $400. I suppose I have little recourse or do I? Does any one have some sound advice?

I am a computer tech. I think your hard drive just failed at an inopportune time (as if there is ever a good time). All VOIP phones have to be registered as you state, because there is no way fro them to know where you are calling from otherwise. I wish you luck, but I dont think it was the device that has given you all the trouble
I use Magic Javk at home and even overseas. Imagine having a local US number in Greece. I saved a fortune on one trip alone. I have it running on a Dell PC laptop - runs on Vista - no problem at all. The guy with the bad hard drive had other issues, Magic Jack was not the problem.
I've had a magic jack for a year and I'm absolutely astounded at how good it's worked...I'm an Computer IT by trade and can safely tell you that the little program you install to use the Magic Jack would do no such thing to your hardrive. You may have had another problem but Don't blame Magic Jack. If you experience any reception issues with it you just need to use a different usb port and always check for updates from the Company. I applaud the man who came up with this ingenious way to save thousands of dollars potentially on your phonebill. Furthermore, I live in So. Calif. and I'm able to call Canada at no additional charge. with att it was about .50 a minute.

I bought an international calling card for $20.00 in the magic jack website. After making several phone calls to Dominican Republic I was told I had 214 minutes left. Again I tried to call a cellular phone in DR; I couldnt connect it, but when I went to tried again the machine told I had only 107 minutes left, what! I did not used any minutes of the 214 mins I had, how can they charge me 107 minute for a call that did not go through?; theyare charging me 107 minutes to try a phone that did not answered my call? We have been Getting several Telemarketing Calls from Connect2world from India, they keep calling and calling day and night.
Finally, we signed up for $20 with my Visa card. They Promised that they will activate my service within 10 mins of time. It has been more than 25 Days, my service is not activated.
Moreover, today when i received my card statement, I was a bit shocked to see a $200 Charge by connect2world.
Now, when I called the customer care number: [protected], no one picked the call. I was more Surprised when a Person by the name of Maksud Received the Call and said that the order was placed for $200 by me. When I said no, he started Arguing with me and later he started abusing me in very bad words.
Finally, he said that he will block my service and make sure that I do not get my Money Back.
For my uttermost Surprise, I also had a talk with the Call Center owner and he was just laughing his hearts out.
I just want to aware all the Indians in USA and Canada, that please do not entertain any telemarketing calls from connect2world as this is my experience with them.
I have nothing more to say apart from making a complain to BBB and lets see what else I can do to them.
I did refer my friends to Maksud, I also need to check what He has done to my Friends.
Connect2world is a Fraud Company, so please beware of Scams.

I have had Magic Jack for about three months. I have had no problem as long as you keep your computer on. I bought a new phone system with all cordless phones four of them of course one has a land base that plugs into the computer. It works fine every time. and for less than I paid in taxes and surcharges you can"t beat it.I think it is the best deal I have ever made.I think that I would not buy anything if I listen to everybody's complaints. I strongly agree with this complaint and wish I had seen it before I bought. This is a flagrant affront to customers by not allowing any contact other than through the chat process which is designed to have you gove up in frustration.
I have wasted hours and a renewal fee in trying to get this to work or to get contact info - csrs refused to give.
I am now giving up and they will keep my $70.00.
Not an honest american business.
