extra charges
Big thing to watch for is if you have people you call that are on small independent phone companies you may experience the need to purchase prepaid minutes. Magic Jack won't identifiy who is charging them only claim someone is so you have no way of knowing who or how bad you are getting ripped off -- you do know the company collecting the money is Magic Jack.
There only solution to constant loss of dial tone is plug it in again. Other items work fine plugged into same pwr location and internet service is steady. Certainly it doesn't bother Magic Jack if I have no dial tone and have to go unplug the MJ plus leave it off for 60 seconds and plug it back in so that I may use the phone

porting of phone number
I contracted with Magic Jack 9/13/2011. Mid-August when I tried to make a call I found that Magic Jack had stopped my service. I contacted customer service and they told me that because my contract was ending that I had to renew my contract before I could use my phone. My contract was due to end 9/13/2012 and they disconnected my service mid-August 2012. So I decided to get another provider, Vonage. For 6 weeks Vonage tried to port my number from Magic Jack. I contacted Magic Jack today for them to tell me that it would cost me a total of $39.94 for them to release my number to Vonage. $29.95 to renew my contract with them and $9.99 which is a fee for my original number. I chose to forego my number port request and voice my complaint here. I will also send my complaint to FCC and BBB, my friends, relatives and any other forum I can find.

devive does not work and no refund
Just got off the phone with magic jack billing and will not refund my money and hung up on me. It's been more than 30 days. Device not working. Tried numerous occasions to contact live chat and they could not get the device working. Spent two days on live chat total or 10 hours? Thought is was my computer and bought another and device still not working. Also have this number for tech support [protected] a recording comes on of the magic jack inventer saying please hold for support but no one seems to pick up. Called during the hours it says. If anyone can help. Please let me know.
I't appears you have SOME issues. I won't waste my time on you anymore. So comment all you want. I see your other post comments and will be REPORTED YOU TO THE COMPLAINT BOARD.
What a raciest comment. I'm white and live in Valencia, Calif. You stated " Magic Jack customer + liar = obviously black"
What a stupid question! Cell phone and land line. I was going to use for my business line.
Squadfather is genuine bigot. He's the numpty of all numpties.
rip off
Product didn't work at all. Total Rip-Off. Spent 4 Hours on the Phone with 4 Different People including Supervisors and they couldn't make it Ring for Incomming Calls. Got Return Authorization and sent back during the 30 Day Free Trial (careful, they start the clock ticking from the second you place the order, NOT when you receive and activate the product). They then refused to refund my $21.00 Fee to Port my Original Number I had for 20 years from my previous provider. As if that insult wasn't enough, they held my Phone Number Hostage for a Ransom of an ADDITIONAL Fee of $30. in order to Port my Number OUT to a new provider that actually Worked. I sent a complaint to FCC as Magic Jack has a "Policy" that allows them to Extort Money from Consumers after they send them Defective Products. Chat Text Below...

Adam: Hello, how may I help you?
Tom Holderbach: I ordered Magic Jack on the following order number TS21588556 and had my number ported from Brighthouse. The Magic Jack failed to work properly (would not ring for incoming calls) and I spent over 4 hours working with you call center reps and I did everything properly and no one including a supervisor could get it to work. I got a return authorization and sent the product back and switched to Vonage. I need a full refund for all charges to my Credit card and my number ported to Vonage for Free (apparently you want $30. to Port my number which is Illegal under FCC Federal Law). Failure to resolve this wil result in a formal dispute for the charges to my Credit Card Compant since your Product was defective. A Formal Complaint letter about your Fruadulen Consumer Practices to the FCC. And I will personally Discourage everyone I come accross in any internet forum or in person to NEVER use Magic Jack as it is a patent rip-off and doens't work and they keep your money. Hopefulle we can resolve this today so I do not have to go through those legnths.
Adam: I'm sorry for the delay. I'll be right with you.
Adam: As I can see here, you are already refunded on your device.
Adam: Unfortunately, you need to pay $30 to port out your number.
Tom Holderbach: That is Illegal.
Adam: Unfortunately, it is our system that is asking for the charge Tom.
Adam: You do need to pay $30 to port out your phone number.
Tom Holderbach: You need to port my number if I request it in the Specified waiting period. That is FCC Rules. I don't care that your company has a policy that lets you rip off consumers.
Adam: I believe I have provided all the necessary information that you need. I will end this chat now. If you have any other concern, please don't hesitate to chat us back. Thank you.

Marykate: Thank you for waiting, Tom.
Marykate: I am a supervisor.
Tom Holderbach: i am losing income and my girlfriend is losing work because, you will not release my number, how do you plan on fixing it?
Tom Holderbach: your product did not work, i returned everything within the 30 days, money back guarratee correct?
Marykate: Yes, Tom.

Tom Holderbach: how do you plan on fixing this problem?
Marykate: You already returned the magicJack and technically Phone Number: [protected] still belongs to magicJack after you transferred it in.
Marykate: You were the one who made the transfer, right?
Tom Holderbach: no it does not belong to you, you did not fulfill your obligation
Tom Holderbach: you sent me a defective product

Tom Holderbach: Okay, I want the name and address of the CEO of your company
Marykate: Now, may I ask if you want to port out phone number: [protected]?
Tom Holderbach: port out?
Tom Holderbach: I want my number released to the new company that actually works
Marykate: Our CEO is Dan Borislow but we are not allowed to provide his address.
Marykate: Alright.
Marykate: In order to transfer a number on your magicJack to a new provider, eligible requests should be initiated by your new service provider, who will coordinate the transfer.
Tom Holderbach: they have tried
Tom Holderbach: you all keep holding it
Marykate: Your new carrier should request a customer service record for your account and we will send them your account information. You must provide your new carrier with your account password, which is the same password you use to access your magicJack.
Marykate: Please read my post message above.
Tom Holderbach: that is ok, it's easy for my lawyer to find his address and contact him
Marykate: Okay, good to know.
Tom Holderbach: I have done all of that and yet you still persist in not releasing my number
Tom Holderbach: I want the name of a supervisor and a phone number to call, thank you
Marykate: As I have checked here, an email confirmation has already been sent to you to complete the port out request.
Tom Holderbach: I am losing income because, of your company and it's faulty equipment
Marykate: As I have checked here, an email confirmation has already been sent to you to complete the port out request.
Tom Holderbach: the only emails I have from your company are letting me know that there are now 7 voicemail messages
Tom Holderbach: that I CANNOT access
Marykate: I will provide you the content of the email.
Marykate:

Marykate: The email confirmation above was sent to Email Address: [protected]@ATT.NET last 09/19/2012.
Tom Holderbach: you want to charge me over 30 dollars
Tom Holderbach: LOL
Tom Holderbach: seriously
Marykate: Yes, that is correct.
Tom Holderbach: you lose a customer for faulty equipment and bad service
Tom Holderbach: then have the nerve to charge them for a phone number that has been their number for over 20 years?
Tom Holderbach: that is how you do business?
Tom Holderbach: really?
Marykate: I fully understand how you feel. Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do for it as this kind of process is system generated.
Tom Holderbach: I call BS
Tom Holderbach: brighthouse cable compnay
Tom Holderbach: company*
Tom Holderbach: released the number with charge
Tom Holderbach: you are losing money, so the easiest way to make money is to rip me off over 30 dollars for horrible service
Tom Holderbach: with no charge*
Tom Holderbach: you have to refund my money because, of your guarantee
Tom Holderbach: what a joke
Tom Holderbach: you get it back by charging me to get my personal number back
Tom Holderbach: mean time, I am losing personal income?
Tom Holderbach: this is how you do business?
Marykate: Yes.
Marykate: I respect and appreciate your sentiments because I would feel the same way if I was on your shoes. However, please understand that a company policy is a policy that we need to follow at all times.
Tom Holderbach: I want to speak with a supervisor right now
Tom Holderbach: and I want a number to call to speaqk to this person
Tom Holderbach: speak*
Marykate: As I have stated at the start of this chat, I am a supervisor.
Tom Holderbach: I have been in customer service for over 30 years
Tom Holderbach: I know policy and when a customer is right, they are right
Tom Holderbach: so...
Marykate: We'd love to help you by phone but we only have Tech chat support as of this time. Please do not worry as all chat sessions are saved for future reference. We are open 24/7 to serve you best.
Tom Holderbach: I want a supervisor
Tom Holderbach: not another marysomeone
Marykate: As I have stated at the start of this chat, I am a supervisor.
Marykate: My name is Marykate.
Tom Holderbach: I am unsatisfied customer
Tom Holderbach: and I am being ripped off by your company to get my personal number back
Tom Holderbach: how do you plan on fixing that?
Marykate: All you need to do is pay the $30 port fee and you'll be all set.
Tom Holderbach: NOT GONNA HAPPEN
Marykate: Okay, Tom.
Tom Holderbach: I was looking forward to using your service
Marykate: I respect your decision.
Tom Holderbach: you sent me faulty equipment from day one
Tom Holderbach: none of it worked
Tom Holderbach: i lost income
Tom Holderbach: i sent everything back
Tom Holderbach: now you want to actually charge me to get my personal number back
Tom Holderbach: you have a good racket going here
Tom Holderbach: I will make sure to spread to everyone i know, business and personal wise, just how your company works
Marykate: You definitely have a good point however I know that this can be frustrating and I would have accommodated your request if it were possible.
Tom Holderbach: It is possible
Tom Holderbach: you just refuse to do so
Tom Holderbach: not my problem
Tom Holderbach: I will make it my goal in life to make sure that everyone I know and do business with that magicjack is a ripoff
Tom Holderbach: copy paste, facebook, twitter and anything else I can find to post it all on
Marykate: Okay, I respect and it is your right to do so as well.
Marykate: Is there anything else I may help you with today?
Tom Holderbach: Give me my phone number back
Marykate: Your new carrier should request a customer service record for your account and we will send them your account information. You must provide your new carrier with your account password, which is the same password you use to access your magicJack.
Tom Holderbach: and it will not cost me anything?
Marykate: Please be informed that there is a $30 port out fee.
Tom Holderbach: why 30 dollars?
Tom Holderbach: no one else at any company charges this fee
Tom Holderbach: so that means it is a fee only charged by your company
Tom Holderbach: so, i am guessing the majority of your customers are unsatisfied so when they leave and want their money back, you make sure and get your money by holding their personal phone numbers as hostage until they pay you a fee to get it back
Marykate: I believe I have provided all the necessary information that you need. I will end this chat now. If you have any other concern, please don't hesitate to chat us back. Thank you.

i was a loayal custemer for over 10 years my mj stoped ringing and no dial tone i called for help they told me i have to pay for service help what the hell majic ripoff is what it is this was with a a nother 10 year paid in advance so this company can blow it out their [censored]
Thieves, 30 day trial starts when you order the item. takes 3 weeks to arrive so there is no return, works crappy even on high speed cable. No customer service,
I just went to the website and read that they had a 30 day free trial that would expire today. No billing on your credit card (until after the FREE trial). That was the lie right there. I got a notice back that my credit card did not go through. I know I didn't have the full amount in at this time, but it would not matter, unless they were a scam and they are. They did not even process my order, but were greedy enough to debit my VISA checking account $1.00. Who do they think they are? We need a class action suit on this company. Also the tv ad should be taken off and they should do a follow up of advocating a scam with a lousy guy that uses his daughter and her puppies that our money has bought. What a loser.!
I tried so many times to use the Magic Jack. Out of all the times I tried, I only connected once and my contacts could not hear me, and the phone kept going off all the time . I tried to contact them, returned their rubbish and have not been credited for my purchase. I am still trying. It's a full fledged rip off.
BUYER BEWARE! These people are a joke. Saw an infomercial and ordered it. Thought we had 30 days to try it out, but they charged us $126.75 within hours of ordering. Returned product back to them for refund and still have not received refund, even after them telling us we would see refund within 48 hrs. Unbelievable! These people are rip off artists...I am going to report them to the United States Postal Services, Better Business Bureau and any other agency that will listen.
GET YOUR MONEY BACK QUICKLY!
BBB pls regulate magic jack web design scheme and shame to the owner.once they see your CREDITCARD, youre done!the software just finishes the registration for you and customer service does not do anything about it. i tried to register my phone and mistakcenly picked "i do not want a phone#" but i couldn't change my option(no back button)so i shut down my pc before hitting the submit button etc.but when i turned my pc on, there the software just pushed thru with the registration anyways.i chat/complained right away about this online and they did not want to correct to even give me a choice of ph# for free.i have to pay the regular fee of changing ph# if i wanted to they said. but as far as what their system says, i registered completely and nothing is wrong with their system. to the owner pls correct this situation. it is unprofessional and even your call ctr reps seem helpless and are not even probably empowered if a courtesy override is due or not nor probably even can do anything regarding charges to services.all companies i dealt with are able to deal with these instances fairly but not your company.it is not the money but the the thought of being RIPPED OFF and not corrected that is not right.
Bought magicjack several months ago. Worked Ok for a few months, then started having problems daily. Dropped calls or too much static to carry on a conversation. Bought a new phone to make sure it was not the prob. Calls come in and party on the line cannot hear you when you answer.
Just stops working regularly. Spend more time trying to get it to work than I do using it. Customer service is non existant. Don't even bother trying to contact them.
And I paid for 5 more years. Stick with your land line or cell. BEWARE! All they want is your money. In the last two weeks I've got a message "audio not found" and cannot place or receive calls. The last time I had to disconnect and restart magicjack several times before it started working again.
Read the complaints on this site. I would bet that they are all true. If you are in the trial period I would suggest you get out before the real problems start. Whatever you do, don't sign up for additional years. You will be pulling your hair out before the first year is up.
I hope this saves somebody some money and aggrevation.
This outfit goes to extra lengths to ignore your complaints and give you a material return number. When your 30 days is
up, they bill your credit card --then tell you the 30 day return period is up- so sorry.
I've been trying to get a return number since Jan 28th without success. They just turned down my BBB request to return my
money. My next step is to get Illinois to go after them.
Ticked Ray
We Ordered The Magic Jack and Returned it. We have Postal proof they recieved it. Shortly after out bank card # was given out through this state. We have made many phone calls trying to retrieve our money and they tell us they can keep the Magic Jack and Our Money? Very Discusted and feel They are running a SCAM .
I had a similar experience with this horrible company. My MJ Plus worked for a couple months and then stopped working. They do not accept phone calls, so you must "chat" with reps who have terrible customer service skills. They chat with several people at the same time, so it takes 10-15 minutes for them to respond to even the simplest of questions or comments. I spent 6-7 hours total doing this before I finally gave up and went back to Vonage. SO not worth my time And of course they could not fix the problem, and also refused to send me a replacement unit. When I signed up with Vonage, MajicJack tried to charge me $30 to port my phone number back to Vonage. I learned from other forums they cannot do this, so I simply did not pay it. They then released my number as the law requires them to do. Failed attempt at extortion! Of course, they also refused to refund the money i wasted buying the defective product and paying for the year of service. Someone needs to sue these crooks!
misrepresentation of service
I purchased a MagicJack in 2011. I then ported my home number for a one-time fee, and paid for an extra 4 years of service. Without notifying me, my ported phone number "expired after one year. They want an additional $20 to revive it plus $10 to use it for a year. The "free" number is not available because I had ported a different one. So, I now have a Magicjack with service until 2016 and which I canot use because I have no phone number associated with it. They have a no refund policy. This was never stated when I purchased the product. Total misrepresentation and theft!
beware! associating your iphone with a magicjack account, there's no going back!
BEWARE! Associating your iPhone with a MagicJack account, there’s no going back!
My wife Kate works for a nonprofit organization in Canada, who uses MagicJack for their phone. During the last week of August she filled in on phone duties for someone who was on holidays. In order for her to be as mobile as possible I decided to install the MagicJack FreeCall app, on her iPhone and associate her iPhone / the FreeCall app with that account.
It worked great! She was mobile and responsive.
Last week she took on a new role and they asked her to get a new MagicJack, we did and created a new account.
Here’s the problem!
When we went to associate the iPhone with the new account we couldn’t because the iPhone was already associated with another account. Simple solution just deactivate it from the one account and associate it with the new one, right, WRONG I couldn’t find a way to do that.
So, I contacted customer support 3 time via their poor live chat (which I’m not totally convinced is not a boot), and the continued response was, can’t deactivate, can’t move, can’t cancel, can only ever associate an iPhone with one account. WHAT! So then I asked to move the number, and the new MagicJack device to the other account, they told me nope that can’t be done either. So now we are stuck with a MagicJack number we can’t use with her iPhone.
Why would MagicJack care if you activate and deactivate iPhone / FreeCall app between accounts, it’s a free option?
my i-phone magicjack app stopped working, saying my service expired end of October 2016. However, the service did not expire. After 3 online chats with the very useless and incompetent customer service, I was told 3 times that it's above their grade, and that I will receive an e-mail from customer service. The only e-mail I received stated that they have received my request. I still had money for international calls on my app, that is gone too. It's the worst possible customer service, not offering any help whatsoever at all.
I have found the solution:
http://drummer10630.wordpress.com/2012/09/21/magicjacktalkfree-iphone-app-fix/
cannot call an alaskan gci number
They want me to purchase extra long distance numbers in order to connect me with my magic jack number [protected] to my son's phone numbers in Alaska and they are blaming the Alaskan Carrier GCI (A LIE!) foe blocking my calls to go through.
Below is a copy of my last chat with them.

Julius: It seems that the carrier of the phone number you are trying to call is not allowing magicJack to have FREE calls on it. It is asking for prepaid minutes before you can connect to that phone number.

Julius: The carrier of the phone number you are calling is not allowing magicJack to make FREE calls anymore.
Julius: magicJack is offering FREE calls, however, we don't have full control over other carriers.
Eleanor Maus: INCORRECT! I just called the carrier and they informed me that the problem starts on the "Magic Jack" end, and that YOU need to fix it with your program.
Julius: There is nothing we can do if the carrier it self is not letting us to connect to their line.
Eleanor Maus: ONE MORE TIME!
Eleanor Maus: IT has to be fixed on your end! the GCI people tell me that they do not block my calls! If you cannot help me, call your supervisor to the chat!
Julius: There is nothing we can do if the carrier it self is not letting us to connect to their line.
Eleanor Maus: Quit repeating me LIES!
Julius: Is there anything else I may help you with today?
Eleanor Maus: YES> Get me a mailing address where I can send a letter describing your lack of cooperation.
Julius: We only do chat support at this time, Eleanor.
Eleanor Maus: Never mind, Julius...I will figure out how to get to the right people. I am not planning to roll-over and play dead. Neither do I wish to keep paying double for a sevice that does not perform as described.
Julius: Please do check our Terms Of Service regarding this matter.

stolen credit card
I purchased one year of Magic Jack phone service using my Capital One credit card. Two days later I was notified of suspicious acitivity on my credit card. Some one had stole my credit card number (not the card) and was using it to attempt to use it in Texas. I live in Wisconsin. Luckily Capital One notified me immediately and canceled my card and I was not charged for the fraudulent purchases. I am pretty sure it was someone at the Magic Jack Company who stole the info because I had not used that credit card in over 6 months prior to using it to purchase the magic jack. BEWARE OF MAGIC JACK!
payments
I am not a dissatisfied customer. I have Magic Jack and depend on it. I just want to renew my subscription. I went through all of the procedures the customer service department told me to do. I registered my credit card and made my payment. My bank received the debit request (six times) but the company never acknowledges receipt of the $30 payment. I asked for an alternative means to pay but your policy is only to accept credit card payments. This is a policy issue and could be resolved on their end. I do not have any problems making credit card payments with any other company I have ever dealt with.
My name is lisaE731
I just found a real number for magic jack that helps with everything not just payments

I believe there is criminal intent to commit online credit card fraud
I received an email offer as an existing MagicJack user to get MagicJack Plus for $34.95 plus $7.95 S&H (total $42.90). There was a link in the email to click to place an order. After I entered my information and clicked on the button to submit my order, I received an error message that my payment method had failed and that I should submit another card. That was on 09 DEC 2011. I did not submit another card and am glad I didn't because it appears that the error message is being used as a technique to collect card numbers in order to make fraudulent charges. I tried two or three more times to place an order but received the same error message page each time. I received a call from my credit card company because of unusual charges, which amounted to 7 from MagicJack for $44.96 each. I contacted MagicJack via online chat through their site. They tried but were unable to resolve the issues I found with their order site. They stated that someone from MagicJack would contact me by email to resolve the problems and that the improper charges would automatically be refunded. No one has emailed me or refunded the charges as of this writing. I inquired why $44.96 was being charged when the only charges stated totaled $42.90 and was informed that there was a 4.8% tax for online orders that wasn't disclosed. I found an email address for MagicJack by searching online and sent a message 11 DEC 11. Someone responded quickly that they have no record of any charges to my credit card. I called the credit card company 14 DEC 11 and was told that two more charges of $44.96 from MagicJack had been added to my account. I had done nothing in the meantime, and two more improper charges appeared?! Given the circumstances, I don't see how the charges on my account from MagicJack could be mere errors. I believe there is criminal intent to commit online credit card fraud either by MagicJack or their agent(s) or employee(s).
... had a Magicjack for a couple of years now... got the 5 year extension a couple of years ago...recently they emailed me with an offer that for $35 they would ship me a magicjack plus... I took the bait and requested one...well if the deal looks too good to be true, it usually is, and in this case it was. During they sign up process they use a form of negative option marketing where you HAVE to accept yet another MagicJack for $48, which they will bill you the next day... your supposed to have the option of returning it within 30 days...at your expense which is from Canada here almost the cost of the purchase. That night and before the second purchase was processed, I cacanceled my MasterCard credit card. For not buying what I didn't want in the first place, they claim I now owe them the $48, saying they will put the account to collection to ruin my credit rating, , and they cancelled my Magicjack Plus which I paid the original $35 plus and the $69 5 year year extension.
This company employs unethical business practices. they are a pure ripoff... it's little wonder they want only your credit card and won't or cant use Pay Pal as a payment service.
Stay away...
charges - breach of contract
When I originally purchased Magic Jack a number of years ago I was told that in a matter of months I would be able to port my residential number for a one time, nominal fee. The months took years and they finally moved my number to Magic Jack. I paid my fee and was happy. At the same time MJ deleted the originally assigned number. Recently I receive a bothering message that my "Number has expired" every time I try to make a call. When I texted with their customer service they told me that I now have to pay a $9.99 "Maintenance" fee for my number. When I told them that this fee was never part of the contract with them and that I had paid for service until 2016, they told be that is too bad and I had to either pay my $9.99 yearly fee for my present number, or pay $9.99 for a new number. This is clearly breach of contract. I paid in full for a service with an end date of 2016 and after the fact MagicJack is changing the contract and now is charging an additional fee. I will contact my state Attorney General office and Better Business Bureau and file complaints against Magic Jack's deception and breach of contract. I urge every Magic Jack customer that is also hit with this to do the same.

rude and incompetent chat agents
Was owner of original MagicJack that I used for a year and then purchased five additional years. I recently purchased a MagicJack Plus (should have known better as the thirty day guarantee does not come with it if you use a debit card for the purchase) and transferred my remaining four years to it. The conversion did not go well and I ended up on their customer service chat (they don't give customers any other way to contact them that I can find). Chatted with Sheri for a while and she passed me over to Paolo who was supposedly one of their top ten percent agents. He finally got my conversion done and I gave him an excellent rating (before I figured out that I had a problem). Hooked everything up and the MagicJack worked as advertised without a coumputer. I then noticed that when I picked up the receiver on my phone, the soft phone did not pop up on the screen. Without it you can't get to your contacts, call logs, 911 information, menu of features, etc. There was a soft phone icon on my desktop so I clicked on it. It was the start program for the old MagicJack and when the program discovered you did not have a MagicJack plugged into the computer, it would not work. I spent several days trying to get an agent on the chat without having to wait for an hour. Today, I logged in and waited until I got someone named Jayne. She had me try several different things (none of which worked) and after about two hours I told her that if I could not get it to work that I wanted to return the unit. She then sent me a message that since it had been so long since she had heard from me (about a minute), that she was leaving the chat and pulled the plug. I guess they are trained that when refund is mentioned, head for the hills. I tried to print the entire chat session and when I did, the page was blank. They must have some way of preventing any proof from being generated. Now, don't get me wrong — my MagicJack works fine so far for incoming and outgoing calls. I just can't get to the softphone to simplify the process. I guess in this case, the new improved version does not work as well as the old one.
not allowing to call work conference lines, and calling cards
I have recently purchased Magicjack plus. Their advertisement says it is equivalent to home phone number, we can even completely replace a landline or other VOIP line with Magicjack. I thought I can try this and see how the service works.
Major issues I face:
1) I use to do work from home few days and join the conference calls. Or sometime when we work late nights for production support we need to join conference calls. Magicjack not allowing to join any conference calls. It is ridiculous.
2) It is not supporting calling card’s local access numbers to call any other countries.
Then how come they advertise bold stating this can replace home phone lines. There should be some regulations in VOIP business to provide basic features.
I am facing similar issue as well. i am trying to use some calling cards to call abroad using the local numbers and Magicjack is not allowing me to do so. The product is not as it is advertised. I will suggest anyone from trying to switch over to magicjack to rethink their options.
poor customer service!
I got an email from Magic Jack stating that their MJ Plus device is half price and I can transfer my current MJ subscription (5 years) over to the new Plus device. I chatted with a representative, who told me that the new Plus device comes with 1 year, so I will get 6 years total of subscription (1 year with Plus device AND the 5 year subscription I paid for). Well, not true. When I registered the new Plus device, it was just a transfer of my current transcription and it took away the one-year subscription that comes with the Plus device. So I basically paid $45 (device plus shipping plus some "fee") to get a new device, when the old MJ didn't bother me at all that it required a computer! When I chatted with someone, she told me too bad. And I would have to pay shipping to ship the MJ Plus device back during the free trial, even though their people screwed up and told me that wrong info. Then when I wanted to talk to a supervisor, she bumped me off the chat. I also had international minutes on my account, but apparently they expire after 6 months of inactivity. The first rep said she would "push" those minutes back to me. Never happened. The 2nd rep said it was not possible to refund those minutes or "push" back. She would make note of what the 1st rep said. But that's all she could do! What kind of company is this that didn't care about customer service?
After reading the complaints here, I am afraid to send the device back even though it's still during the "free trial" period. I'm afraid I would never see my money and I would have to pay for the shipping. Plus I might not get my subscription back yet. UGH!
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Poor customer service! I called today because they deactivated my account because I hadn't plugged it into my computer in a few months. I paid for a full 5 years and they were telling me I had to reactivate my account and pay $10 for that service. They also told me I would not receive a refund for the remaining 5 years if I requested it. I also got "HUNG UP ON" via chat by a customer service rep for Magic Jack, named Eric.
Eric: You should pay for the $10 to reactivate and claim the number
Leah: I'm not doing that. I received no email warning or anything. We are a military family trying to keep in touch with family. You will hear about this
Leah: I want a full refund for the remaining years then
Eric: We tried to process the payment for the number, and we intended it for you to keep the number and still receive calls with the number, however it was not successful and the device was not used for a long time that is why the updates was not connected
Leah: you shouldn't have to process ANY payments! It was prepaid in full for 5 years!
Eric: That is for your device and license
Eric: The device should be used for it to keep active Leah
Leah: So you are charging fees beyond what was stated. I was using it...for incoming calls. HELLOOOOOO?
Leah: Class Action lawsuit?
Eric: Yes Leah I am still here
Eric: I believe that I have already provided you all the information needed; I would like to ask permission to end this conversation with you. Thank you.

magicjack porting
MagicJack LP
PO Box 6846
West Palm Beach FL 33405
Complaint Description:
June 11, 2012 - MagicJack Plus Paid $30.00 - MagicJack reported that my phone number port will not be done until June 17th, 2012.
According to FCC Regulations a Phone company cannot take more than "One Business Day" Magic Jack has already taken "Three Business Days" and has no plan to return my phone number until "Six Business Days" Which include a weekend. On top of it all they charged me around $15 to port it in, took only a few hours and $30 to port out and says it will take 8 days!
"The Porting Period The FCC has changed its number porting rules to shorten the porting period for"simple"ports from the current four days to one business day. The new deadline applies to all simple ports, including"intermodal" ports such as wireline to wireless, wireless to wireline, wireline or wireless to VoIP or any other combination. Simple ports generally do not involve more than one line or more complex adjustments to telephone switching equipment. Wireline, wireless and interconnected Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers are required to meet this new, simple port deadline, which will take effect in late summer 2010 for most carriers. Small, rural carriers have a longer period, until the beginning of 2011, to meet the new porting deadline. Can be found here. http://www.fcc.gov/guides/portability-keeping-your-phone-number-when-changing-service-providers
Your Desired Resolution:
Port out my phone number today.
This case will be reviewed by a complaint specialist at the Better Business Bureau, and then forwarded to the business for their response. It is our policy to allow the business 30 working days to respond to your complaint. You will be notified when the business has responded.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Magic Jack also took an unauthorized payment from my bank account. I filed a complaint with BBB, logged a dispute with my bank, wrote Magic Jack and canceled my order. I have yet to receive the $90.85 refund and/or the Magic Jack.

service
I've had a Magic Jack for quite some time; the original and now the plus. It worked reasonably well with my internet connection. I was generally satisfied with it, so when I got the plus I subscribed for 5 years. I used the service when I need to make calls where I'd be on hold for lengthy times, and my cell phone account couldn't handle that. BUT today I tried to call a toll free number...Magic Jack never told subscribers that they could no longer access toll free numbers. If I'd have known that, I'd have never continued my subscription. Communications from and to the company are dificult at best. It is probably the cheapest way to have a voip service, but nowhere near the best.
I bought the Magic Jack a year ago. Initially, the USB port would not support the MJ. Moving the magic jack to the top USB port fixed things quite well. Over the last year, I have had the intermittent reset issues, and occasional dropouts that have not bothered me. These things have happened rarely, although more often then with a legacy phone company. Just reset and there you go.
HOWEVER, I had to call my house from down the street the other day on a pay phone. My cell went out. It cost me $.65 to do that. I got on the magicjack cue this morning and found out that even though I was told that my exchange was local when signing up, IT IS NOT LOCAL. Folks who call me from the local area, on a land line get charged for a long distance call.
Now, I live THREE blocks from the headquarters of the Discovery Channel, in DOWNTOWN SILVER SPRING, 8 miles from ground zero and the White House.
PC Magazine should most DEFINITELY qualify it's endorsement of Magic Jack. I read about these exchange issues others noted with interest, because I had been assured that folks who called me were not getting those charges. THAT IS NOT THE CASE.
NOW, I am very dissatisfied. I would tell ALL of you to go down the street, and call your house from a pay phone, and see what happens. I was SHOCKED. Magic Jack promised to email me the minute that I was able to get a local phone number. Oh really, I have had the service for a year already. Interesting company. I would be interested to know if ANY metropolitan area is covered by magic jack. I would bet that they are criss crossing things so that they can get a share of those long distance charges on each call.
This seemed too good to be true and it was. Never worked right from the beginning. Was on their chat customer service for 6 hours and they screwed it up even more. Every time you call in they have you do the same process over and over again even if it does not work. They will not stand behind their product. I wanted a refund and they were sorry buy that wouldn't happen. Save yourself a lot of grief and keep your land line.
I, ve had Magic Jack since May 2012, And it cuts me off of important calls, any kind of call at lease five times a day. when i call custom service, I don., t get answer
It has become the habit of Magicjack to charge for calls that do net get through or connected. When I contacted Magicjack through their service chat representative, I was told that the "provider of the receiving call is responsible for the charges." The answer sounds strange to me, and I think magic jack is fraudulent in their claim, as no receiving company will charge for services they did not provide. More so, I think a receiving company can only charge their own subscribers and not a subscriber on another phone carrier.
The problem I had with Magic Jack was there is no phone numbers for Hawaii. At first the chat rep asked well does it work anyway? Of course it works but I had to pick a Florida location which means anyone in Hawaii will have to call me long distance. The chat rep final said that Magic Jack is working on getting a Hawaii connection. If they don't have one by the end of my subscription I will not renew.

VOIP & recognition issues between traditional landline and new variations of landline services do occur, I use 8x8 at home ( packet 8) I have had the privledge of learning while in a hospital 18 miles away that the hospitals phone service Northstar access, did not recognize the contracted exchange numbers in the next towns that 8x8 had contracts with, BUT qwest (former bell family) the orginal exchange did recognize them so of course I complained to Northstar and to 8x8 about what was to be local calls not working. Same thing when at the U OF M dental clinics in mpls the payphone company did not recognize the contracted metro number. I only know when one encounters connectability issues it helps to complain, I dont know for sure BUT think there may not be any kind of central clearing house for ALL these firms to use to learn about each others exchange numbers.
alaska
Will not call Alaska and they changed the terms mid contract. I am told for an additional fee, it can work, however, no rates are to be found. There is no warning that it does not work and retailers such as BEST BUY assure customers it works to call everywhere in Alaska and the rest of the United States. I understand why it does not work here, we have high connection fees to the phone providers, that is why ATT bought Alascom, it was pumping big millions a year for a company it did not even own. They got our satellite and we lost our exclusivity to 1 800 478 numbers, and now we get random 800+ numbers. I had fun with it when it worked, enjoyed it. Who needs it with GCI's great service? Sucks to be you if ACS is your only choice - was I not surprised when I got my $650.00 lifeline phone bill...and they threatened me as I was paying it off. I quit paying them. Why did they let it go so high?
will not call in my country he blocked me its force to take its lonag distanes card .
charges for calling conference numbers
Magic Jack started charging for making calls to Conference Numbers . Pathetic ..!!! To make a call to conference number we need to have pre paid balance under your account... Thats Rip Off ..Another way to make money ..I see this added under new terms of service -- " We may require prepaid purchase and/or we may charge you for calls to conference lines, "...

MagicJack device was shipped March 06, 2012 with 30 days money back guarantee.(Order#DM05862998) I was not at all satisfied with the performance, requested for RMA, for return. Returned the device in original package (RMA# [protected]) on 3/22/2012 for full refund. Meanwhile my original Phone Number [protected] was transfered from previous Phone provider 8x8 Inc. to MagicJack. Now after almost 25 days, Magic jack is blocking all my incoming calls, With the message" MagicJack customer is not available, please leave the message" without any ring on my phone or any confirmation. I have decided to go back to 8x8, Inc, my previous phone provider. 8x8 Inc. and I have requested repeatedly to MagicJack to cancell my service, release my original phone number [protected], stop blocking my incoming phone calls on [protected], and provide the full refund as per their money back guarantee
deceptive
I started an order for an advertised free trial. Once I realized that the free trial did not apply to me (must use a credit card not debit card) I did not go through all of the stages to submit it. When I got to the screen "If you hit confirm, your card will be charged on 4/12/2012" (the next day) I looked for a cancel order button. Since there was no way to cancel only proceed, I closed out the window and restarted my computer. Magic Jack charged my debit card anyway, and sent me an email stating that I had 1 hour to cancel. I contacted customer service, which is only available via chat. The operator was rude, told me once you enter your card info the order is processed even if under different terms, and regardless if you confirm or not. She then and ended the conversation while I was typing my response. Extremely negative experience. Not only are they deceptive, but they blame the customer for everything.
