This review was chosen algorithmically as the most valued customer feedback.

I ordered this from a TV ad on 5/15/08 which stated that you had 30 days to use it before being charged. I was charged immediately in the amount of $47.90. I finally received the Magic Jack and it does not work on my computer. There is not a telephone number for the company with the package nor is there one provided on their website.

Please advise smb!

Actually, it worked very well for about 2 months and I called all over North America with it. Used another phone for overseas, but Magic Jack did work well for about two months. Then there were constant repetitve issues that took forever to repair over the 'Chat' line that is used for support. The people try, but they are given a manual and you start from the beginning each time, with each person. The redundancy is a complete waste of time. The CSR's try, but the company itself is terribly run. As you can see now, there is a special off of the renewal, with the economy as it is customers would be screaming to renew the service if it worked. An incentive would not be needed to entice one to renew. If the retention of the existing customer base is failing, that also means the new market has fallen even more sharply. This is not a good sign for a Company's longevity or its survival. Best advice is to stay away at this time, in 3 years or different management, this could easily be a very viable concept and company. Just not now.

Regards,
Steve

paul: yes

Harold: Yes, that's not true, Paul.

paul: hello?

paul: what's not true?

paul: Please confirm that this is not true...

paul: Magic Jack states there is NO CONTRACT TO SIGN. When you plug in your magic jack, it then up loads it's software and agreement that you are bound to. The last paragraph contains BINDING ARBITRATION and that's the WORST KIND OF CONTRACT for anyone to sign. This is FRAUD. They say there is no Contract. After you buy the product you then learn their is BINDING ARBITRATION. You have no rights in BINDING ARBITRATION. The ARBITRATOR always rule in their favor and not yours, even after you hire an attorney for more than $100, 000.00 to prove you are right AND you can not win against them. Normally in a Court of Law you are innocent until proven guilty. In Arbitration, you are guilty based on false allegatins until YOU CAN HIRE AN ATTORNEY FOR $100, 000.00 TO BABYSIT YOUR CASE FOR 3 YEARS and you still can not win in ARBITRATION. Once I read the agreement and saw the BINDING ARBITRATION, I new to cancel out before agreeing to their FRAUDULENT BINDING ARBITRATION. Remember, ARBITRATION VOIDS ALL YOUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS FOR A JUDGE AND A JURY. AVOID ARBITRATION LIKE IT'S THE PLAGUE. I am speaking from experience. I have been tortured IN A $10, 000, 000 ARBITRATION SUIT for 3 years . I did not even have a contract with the company who thru me into ARBITRATION. And, I am still trying to prove I do not have a contract with these MAFIA COMPANIES' ATTORNEYS AND ARBITRATORS. Also, you are responsible for paying the attorney fees and arbitrators fees for both sides which will equal hundreds of thousands of dollars. They will then get a judgement against you and THEY WILL take all your owned assets. All this based on the false advertisement of NO CONTRACT. All the arbitrators and attorneys are in on the take. ARBITRATION IS MAFIA'S NEW TOOL.

My magic jack hasn't worked right for months, since I received it. Can't tell you how many hours I've been on live chat. Might have been 3 hours today. I followed directions, then was told to shut down my computer and reboot. The gal assured me it would work. Nahhhhhhhhh.

btw the problem is I can't receive or make calls.

I ordered the Magic Jack after being told it was a great product. I went online and ordered the product then decided to do some investigating on the product. After reading all the negative feedback about this company I decided to cancel my order. I replied to an email confirmation that I recieved for my order. I told them to cancel my order as I no longer needed it. I was amazed at how fast they did this. They cancelled my order and released the hold for the $110.80 that they had on my credit card, or so I thought. Today I go on my credit card account online and I notice that someone had a hold on my credit card in the amount of $46.80. I called Capital one and they told me that Magic Jack had a hold on the credit for that amount. I am PISSED! They have no reason to put a hold on my credit card as they cancelled this order less than 24 hours after I placed the original order. They only refunded $63.10. No reason at all for them to hold onto any of my money. I sent this scam company another email telling them that they need to release my credit and do it now.

I have to say I have a bittersweet relationship with MagicJack. On the one hand, I LOVE the savings they provide and the call quality is decent enough to pass for occasional business phone calls (beats shelling out $80 a month for a BASIC business phone line when I only take maybe 5 calls on it a month...most of the time clients call my cell phone). So it was a good way to get a "local" number other than my cell phone, and I have to say I have been very happy with the service. On the other hand, it is true that they are EXTREMELY hard to get ahold of, and the customer service reps who you have to talk to via chat are dumber than a box of rocks. You ask them a question and they give you some completely irrelevant answer. I'm like "HELLO? DID YOU EVEN READ MY QUESTION?" I didn't have any billing problems like some people listed, but mainly just wanted to ask them to change the "no forwarding to 800 number" policy, but couldn't get a straight answer about how to submit a customer suggestion. And they absolutely will NOT give out their address or corporate phone number. So that is very annoying.

I ordered Majic Jack because they told me I could "split my phone line" and keep my land line while giving my child the mj number. LIES. Then, they charged me before my 30 days was up, but said it was just a hold and they didn't have my money! LIES! Thier reps will do NOTHING to help. They have no complaint resolution. They DO NOT CARE. Now they have almost $100 (ordered 2) and I have never even used the stupid things!

What they fail to tell you is that if you can only get your high speed internet through the phone company, then you will not save very much money at all. A stand alone internet service is almost $50! Why not have a regular phone for that price!

I bought magicJack on line for $39.95 + $6.95 Shipping + $59.95 for 5 additional years of service.
The infomercial stated that they would hold the charges for the 30 day free trial period. After I had given them my debit card info, the last thing on the screen was that the hold period was for charge cards only. Debit cards would be initiated the NEXT day...which mine was for a total of $106.85...totally fraudulent. Should be prosecuted by the Attorney Generals of all states. Buyers beware. This is a fraudulent operation with no customer service telephone numbers, and overloaded online tech support that is poorly trained and unable to solve the many problems of magicJack. The whole operation will be bankrupt in a few months. Save your money and trouble. I don't expect to receive a refund.

First, if any of you complainers used a cc to order, then create an Appeal for a return of charges. Why go into the "I got ripped off" mantra. It is rediculous and childish but I am sure some of you will complain that this action would not work also. Secondly, being an engineer, I know how the majority of folks treat everyday equipment, i.e. computers, TVs, cars, etc and it is usually not very well. I am always asked to fixed something broken down junk that was never taken care of in the first place at someone's home. I know folks that couldn't take a bolt off a bike and replace it without screwing something up, so I take these complaints very lightly. There are always two sides to every story. I have not purchased a Magic Jack, but tonight I will. Claiming fraud is quite a sweeping statement. I wonder how much of the trouble is actually caused by you folks? Of course you'll neve admit to this anyway.

Pay attention to when you're inputting your cc/debit card data. It clearly states as I have read it about five minutes ago that if you use a debit card, you will not receive the 30 day free trial and that you will be charged immediately.

I have had Majic Jack for a year, we just renewed. I did have problems but they do help. go to the original web site, scroll to the bottom of the page, click on customer service, once you get to that page there are options there to get to a chat room and they will walk you thru it. We love it.

I got my MJ, plugged it in and Viola! It works just fine. I don't know what some people are doing that makes theirs not work, but first of all you have to have a high speed connection, it will not work on dial up! I admit when I was researching this to see if it would work, I had some questions that could not be answered at that time. Since then, they have all the answers to just about any question you may have. My main concern was that it does not work if the pc is no on, , well yes, it will not work, it makes sense duh! BUT, reading on further just recently on their site all my questions were answered, one being that you can forward your MH to your cell phone while you are away and this enables you to turn off your pc. Yes, your callers message will be forwarded to your cell phone, office phone, any phone you like. Then when you get back home, you simply reverse the forward! I think the MJ is the best invention since bubble gum! And if the good lord made anything better, he must have kept it for himself! LOL.. Another great feature is the way your callers can leave a voice mail and you can listen to it when you log in on your computer while it was off during the day ( that is if you did not forward your incoming calls) My other great concern was, hey, you can't have an extension, yes this is true, but you can have a MJ on each computer in your home even if the two computers are networked together! Hey this is great! I have had the MJ for a couple of months now, I wanted to test the waters before I got rid of the LAND LINE! That nasty thing that charges you so mu ch money and half of it is taxes! Good bye LAND LINE! Just saved myself over 45.00 a month. Next Im going to get the adapter so I can watch all my tv programs on my tv with out having cable or satellite, and its going to go through my pc too!

Lots of technology going on here and I'm loving it! Any time I can turn off those high price, over rated utilities, I will do it. Hoping someone can come up with a better solution to the HIGH ELECTRICITY BILLS!
Oh, and by the way, I just picked up my second MJ at WALMART! yes, for 39.95, will be installing it on my kids computer so he will have his own private line and then, we are done with LAND LINES FOREVER!

A SATISFIED MJ CONSUMER FOR REAL, , NOT PAID BY MAGIC JACK, , IM JUST AN OLD LADY TRYING TO SAVE A FEW PENNIES HERE AND THERE!

When I requested the MJ and went through the purchase process, I printed out the page of charges I would receive. When the bill came through on my credit card, the charge was higher than my printed page, I tried to contact the company. The message says they only provide live chat help. I contacted one of their reps.
Jaden said the charges were legitimate. I argued I wanted the over payment back.
Jaden argued with me. I told Jaden I wanted a refund of everything. Jaden said I was over my 30 day time period. I explained I only got the over charge after the 30 day period and that because of his/her attitude I wanted out.
Jaden said "You don't know how to read simple instructions" and other insults, you are outside your 30 day period.
I advised I had printed out the page with the charges on it and they charged me more than that page indicated.
I said this is a crocked company.
After a lengthy discussion I said OK I paid an additional $59.95 for an additional 5 yrs of service and because of Jaden's attitude, I want that back.
He/she said he would refund that in 3-5 business days.
I'm waiting to see that happen.
I then told Jaden that if he/she had only refund the extra charge, all of these bad interactions would never have happen, they would not be giving me a $59.95 refund and I would not be leaving the company. I may have stayed as a customer but because of the way he/she spoke to me, I will leave the company once my year is up. I let Jaden know I would not want to stay with a company that has such poor customer service and adds charges that are not posted.
I also let Jaden know I am a manager in a call center and would be fired if I treated a customer the way I was just treated.
I also let Jaden know I would advertise any where that the company is dishonest and has very poor customer service.
All of this because I disputed a $5.99 charge, so I get insulted.
This is so sad.

I have had Magic Jack now for 2 months. They did honor the 30 day trial period before billing my credit card. I had no problem connecting and so far it works great - good voice quality. The only downside would be what some are complaining about - customer service is bleak and the chat people do try to help but it isn't the best. But for $19.95 a year, hey, what else can you get for that. You are lucky to get one dinner at a restaurant for one for that amount so I wouldn't complain too much.

My magic jack works perfectly. I don't know why you all are saying that Magic Jack is a scam when it isn't at all. There are some internet companies, such as Windstream that do not support magic jack, and the help people at Magic Jack can go in and make it work.. that is what they did for me. I have already called several friends from different states.. and they only charged what they said they would charge.. if you have a debit card instead of credit it will get billed right away... that's a given anyway.

Why would Magic Jack target you all and not me, and not other people I know that are very happy with it? All you needed was to get some help from the reps on the chat like I did.

Your computers must be out of date if the Magic Jack didn't work for you.. or your Internet provider doesn't support magic jack. The thing is if you care enough to get it to work, just go on the chat and let the tech support install it for you. That's what I did since my Internet company does not support the Magic Jack. The tech support went into my router and adjusted the settings so that it would accept magic jack. It works beautifully. The connections are great and the communications are clear on both ends. No complaints. I don't see why people are saying it is a scam. If it were a scam everyone would be scammed. I think they just don't have the right connection or they have an old computer or too slow of a connection.

A scam is a scam... scammers don't pick and choose who they will scam, now do they? Sheesh!

In trying to return this device, I've run into some serious problems, the company headquarters are a mystery even to "Ask.com" and finding a real phone number took reading through many posts.
They offer the kind of diservice that should be considered criminal, and if even 1/10th of the posts about credit cards being overcharged/double charged, then the company should be subjected to a class action lawsuit.
Anybody interested?

I am a Pastor & want to convey my comments. MagicJack is a GREAT item. My old landline was through Time Warner Cable, which is also an internet type service. I have been told that the sound quality with my MagicJack is BETTER than what I had with Time Warner Cable's phone service.

I bought my MagicJack back in Dec. 2008. I paid $46.90 & was told I had 30 days to try it or return for a full refund. After trying it for 2 weeks I was very satisfied with the product. I had my regular landline disconnected & am now saving nearly $40 per month for a landline using MagicJack.

I don't know about all of these complaints, but people need to know that a minimum of 128kb broadband internet service is required for MagicJack to work properly. The USB may also be an issue for people with older computers having only USB 1.1 ports. This can be easily remedied by buying a USB 2.0 adapter cheap on Ebay. There is also a very good possibility that the problems these people are having are ISP related, or their other hardware (routercable modem, etc.).

For the people complaining about "Ugly Screens" etc, there is an upgrade you can download from their website that gives you more options, including minimizing the interface screen. MagicJack says it is a good idea to d0wnload the upgrade regularly to receive all new changes to the software.

I am not saying that MagicJack is God's gift to mankind, it isn't perfect, but for the price it is well worth it. I have worked with a very high costing VOIP phone service that had worse quality & echoing, using the same ISP I have now. MagicJack wins hands down!

It may be very true that many of these complaints really are fake, and have been put on by competitors.

I agree with the pastor here. I have no problems. I don't believe any of the people that are saying bad things about it. There is just no way that Magic Jack would pick people to scam and others to please.. it doesn't make sense to do that. I just don't believe them.. or if they are telling the truth they don't have a proper hookup to their computers... it's something on their end why it doens't work.. it's not the fault of Magic Jack.

Be aware people, I have not found any problem with mine. Those big companies may have people working in order to kill this emerging new product that aims to run them out of bussiness...I used to have At&T and I used to be billed over $50 month (long distance not included) and now I am not even charged $50 a year What a monster difference! What a savior is magic Jack! You have just come in time baby otherwise I would have been bankrupted by these money suckers that call themselves "companies"...

I too purchased the magic jack. And also had the same problem with the "customer service". The advertisement states, "they will even pay for return postage", well after hounding them over and over and over again, putting a complaint into the BBB they eventually refunded all of my money. It took quite some time, but I did not give up, I saved every chat, and one person would say yes I would be refunded, and another would say they do not know what I am talking about. I was actually on the live chat with them when the tv commercial came on and typed verbatim what the guy was saying on tv and they STILL stated that they do not pay for postage for the return. I asked if they had ever seen the commercial and a manager finally admitted to not being aware of it? My problem was the fine print. They state on tv that you keep your phone number for life. Fine print states they can change without notice. There was more fine print I won't bore you with but my advice is to READ IT. It is a scam, and now they are selling them at radio shack? Which will probably drop their stock price even more. Good luck to anyone who takes this item. It is the cheapest made product I have ever seen. It is a light weight PLASTIC, how long will that last? Buyer Be WARE!

You know, you can check with the BBB about the complaint that I put in. Whoever is saying that we the consumer, are people trying to run them out of business for other companies, I would put money on that person, is from magic jack. The ones who "got their backs".

They are not a part of the BBB but you can still put a complaint in. The more complaints, maybe the better service. I am speaking of customer service, product service, etc. Especially the customer service.

Now they are being sold at walmart, radio shack, etc. I would be curious as to how many returns are being made.

My advise again, go to the BBB and save every chat, becuase they have a nice little habit of hanging up on you. And don't think that if you click the icon, to have the chat e-mailed to you that it will work every time, becuase it does not.

Good luck, but I would not reccomend it until the fine print and the product have been stopped with the lies.

Again, read it, you will be suprized as to what the fine print states.

First off people, learn how to write and spell. It's difficult enough to understand your argument, let a lone read your horrendous literacy skills.
MagicJack is fraudulently misleading people--plain and simple. Does the product work? Yes it sounds like it does in some cases and it in others it struggles. However regardless of the product's functionality, here are three very specific falsehoods about their advertising:
1) "keep your phone number for life" as stated on the infomercial. This is simply not true. This is a major contradiction in their FAQ which states they can change the number any time.
2). "only 19.95 a year." as stated on the infomercial. Again, this is a fraudulently misleading clause as the price will vary in year 2 and beyond unless you prepay up front. Then again you can't even prepay for life to keep the $19.95 a year price. At this point it is not possible to lock in $19.95/yr forever and therefore this claim is fraudulent.
3). Misleading and fraudulent requirement information.
The product packaging and the FAQ on online states
To use a magicJack, you MUST have the following:
A computer with an available USB port; AND
Any computer with Windows XP, Windows Vista or Intel-based Apple MAC operating system; AND
One of the following: Broadband, High-Speed Internet, Cable Internet, DSL, WiFi, Wireless, WiMax, or FiOS;

However you MUST also have a working sound card. Not ONE piece of information divulges this information and yet it is absolutely required. So anyone with sound card issues, missing drivers, bad software etc.. will not be able to use the product.

MagicJack’s website and packaging therefore is a complete lie!

Regardless of the product's functionality (I personally think it stinks, hate the desktop shortcut, can't go on standby without unplugging it, drops calls..), MagicJack LP, based in Florida is practicing fraudulent, misleading and very poor business practices. I've not seen a major company operate this poorly in a long time.

mine works fine i set up magic jack to run on an old amd 900mhz duron laptop (built in 2001) and decided to use it as a print server and extra network storage space as well, its been running constantly with no restsrts for 3 weeks and i havent dropped a call nor have i had any problems with the magic jack. keep in mind that magic jack is soley dependant on the quality of your internet connection. i know i sound like a magic jack employee but im actually a 10 year eployee of my current internet, video and former telephony provider.

i will say that peopel have claimed magic jack wont work with your existing phone wiring in your home or an alarm system such as adt or brinks. not true. if you run a double phone jack that is jumped together on the green/red primary pair from your magic jack with a dedicated cat 3 or cat 5 line to the nid (netrwork interface demarcation) you know, the little box outside yoru house that is usually by the power meter. simply unplug the incumbment telephone provider from the test jack and then wire one of the pairs to the green/red posts on the nid just like your adding a phone jack (usually blue/bluewhite and blue goes to red blue white to green which is the common color codes the phone company uses for the primary pair) go in and plug a jumper from the magic jack to the jack you ran and bingo dial tone throughout the house wiring.

now if you just want to make the phones work and arent worried about an alarm you can simply unplug the phone company at the test jack in the nid and plug a 2 way phone splitter into the nearest jack and plug in the majic jack to the splitter thats plugged into the jack. as long as your wirning is in good shape it will be fine. apartments can be a bit different as far as the demarcation points, they usually have the test jack in teh kitchen or some of them have structured panels it wont work if you cannot disconnect the incumbment provider from the house wiring.

most of the problems ive read about were caused operator errors, computers with issues like software problems or a crappy internet connection this is from a seasoned telephone worker and i will vouch for this product. i will say that most people shouldnt use it as a primary phone line if you arent capable of understanding the way it works. i use it at my house for a land line to call peopel for long periods of time to keep cell time down. my family has spent countless hours on teh phone with magic jack and i havent heard a complaint from anybody.

I've been using Magic jack almost a year now, and I am planning to renew it. This product saved me a lot of money. I recommend it to my freinds and they liked it. maybe thats why there magic jack doesn't work it depends of what kind of computer they were using or they have a old version and also maybe there internet is so slow. For me I give credit for them. Where ever I go I take it with me, and it works fine.

I am very sorry to read what happened to you but I can not agree to your statement. All of my family lives overseas so I purchased 4 devices, configured and sent them over to them. The savings are huge! I can always count on being connected with my family. A missed phone call or a computer reboot is a very small price to pay for the actual savings and service we receive.
On another hand, the fifth MagicJack device I purchase was defective, being a tech guy I troubleshooted it myself but needed to contact them for a replacement. While chatting with customer service, I jumped through all their hoops and they concluded it was a defective device. I was issued an RMA on the spot.
I am very skeptical and negative guy but when it comes to MagicJack, all I can say is that they get a score of 8.5 from 1 to 10.

I am looking for the corporate office of magic jack, After buy this product I tried to get it going. only after getting on line and having someone walk me through it. was I able to use it. Then after a few months it stopped working the green update said "Error: Broken Storage" In red! I sent the magic jack back with NO RETURN! several time I was on line with people from magic jack.
I bought a new magic jack and was on line with on line help! From Magic jack! A supervisor told me I was stuck with the new Number and Basically I was OUT THE EXTRA MONEY THAT I PAID FOR THE FIRST ONE I PAID FOR 5 YEARS OF SERVICE. i HAVE BEEN WITHOUT A HOUSE PHONE GOING ON 8 MONTHS, ONLY BECAUSE I WENT THROUGH MAJOR SURGERY.
MAGIC JACK HAS GIVEN ME THE RUN AROUND WHEN TALKING TO A SUPERVISOR HE OR SHE DISCONNECTED ME AFTER I ASKED FOR HIS OR HER SUPERVISOR. AND THE CORPORATE OFFICE PHONE NUMBER. I DEMAND TO TALK TO SOMEONE WHO IS IN CHARGE TO MAGIC JACK AS A CUSTOMER I DEMAND IT!

Where is the inventor and does he care how his customers are being treated?
