My wife’s RAV4 used to run so well!
I took our two cars to this Midas on Thursday 10/19/23 for oil change and tire rotation. On Monday 10/30/23, with only 60 more miles on the odometer, I got into our 2014 Rav4 to go to work and it started very rough with the oil pressure light on. I turned off the car and checked the oil. Oil levels looked okay. I called Midas and they told me to bring the car in and they would make it right. When I had someone to watch our baby, I took it back to Midas. When I did the oil light went out but it ran very rough for a few blocks before smoothing out. After looking at it for 30-45 minutes, Midas told me that the alternator was overheating, causing the problem and quoted me just over $1200 for the repair. This did not make sense to me so I told them that I might return later and took the car to check elsewhere.
I took the car to an auto parts store and had the alternator tested. It was putting out correct voltage but this did not tell us what the problem was or whether it was overheating so I took it to the Toyota dealership where my wife had bought the car and had serviced it previously. I told them what happened and asked them to do a full diagnostic. The dealership removed an incorrect filter which had been twisted/crushed into place and said that Midas had put incorrect oil in it. Too viscous. We told the mechanic to go ahead and correct what Midas had done but he said the engine may already be very damaged and that we may need to replace the top half or even the whole engine.
Thankfully, after the dealership performed the repair, the engine does seem to be running much better, although the tech cautioned us that we may see further evidence of damage as time passes. We were advised to seek compensation from Midas. We received the car on Tuesday and my wife and I returned to the Midas on Karl road to show what the second opinion had uncovered.
Daniel, the assistant manager in charge at that time seemed professional and concerned but, seemingly in an effort to close the issue, took one of their pamphlets for buy six oil changes, get the seventh free, and stamped out six, offering it to us. A free oil change?!? Realy? I showed him the invoice from Toyota Direct for $317.71 and told him that would be a start. Nevermind that I lost a day and a half at work. Nevermind that I’m still holding my breath on the engine. He let us know that for Midas to address that, he would have to wait for his manager who would be in tomorrow (Wednesday). Wednesday passed. Thursday passed. It is now Friday and we have heard nothing back from Midas.
Claimed loss: Loss of $317.71. Loss of one and a half days work/vacation time. Possible loss of engine or top half of engine pending.
Desired outcome: Midas should cover the invoice we received from the 2nd party. Covering the cost of an oil test. An offer to compensate me for the lost time at work would also go a long way. If the engine fails from this, Midas should be liable.
