My son just turned 16 years old, and applied at Wal-Mart. He was so happy when they called him for an interview. He came home and told us he had the job. Next, he went in for the so-called orientation where they sent him for a drug test. He did it and passed. Then they had him fill out information for a background check so he did, and then he waited and waited and waited for them to call him to start work. He then got a copy of the background report in the mail with a clear background, nothing on it and called Wal-Mart to find out when he can start working. They told him to call the background place and give them permission to let Wal-Mart have the information, so he did, several times back and forth phone calls, .

He received another background check:. Finally, the background check company told him he didn't get the job and they sent him a turn down letter". He went to Wal-Mart and they said that is their policy|. It turned out that when he filled out the paper work for the background check, they told him (while he believed he was an employee, an implied verbal contract by Wal-Mart) to put everything he ever did on the paper; if he got in trouble for anything, put it on the paper'. He did get in trouble as a minor (he still is a minor) and the records are sealed, of only minor fractions of the laws, that of a misdemeanor!. But he listed everything anytime he had a situation when the police were involved?. They told him to put everything down because if they found something that he didn't put down, he would lose his job?. And then when he was found clean with nothing on his record, they fired him or reversed the hiring because of what he had put down on the form.

I am so angry that this is Wal-Mart's policy, and I intend to make people aware of this policy, also to suggest people don't shop there anymore. Being a student in the College of Legal Studies at Kaplan University, I feel his civil rights have been violated as well as him being a minor and assumed Spanish but because of his background was discriminated against. This was his very first job, so it really sucks he went to such an awful place for employment, but the one who misses out is Wal-Mart. My son is a genius with computers, and is gifted as named by the schools for some extremely high scores (100%) on state tests; probably one of the hardest workers, biggest team player, and the least likely to steal. I don't think that Wal-Mart could have had a better employee, but now I know why they are always short on staff, who are overworked and treat customers like they are a burden, and have to lock everything up so no one can buy it, instead of a staff that is friendly and can help customers with questions, much less releasing the merchandise into a good paying customer's hands.

I can't tell you how much money they have lost because of the lock down of merchandise. Anyways, I don't shop at Wal-Mart anymore and I feel Americans should boycott a store that violates the civil rights of the American people especially its youth. When you are 16 years old, you can't have much of a background. Are they kidding me?

Part of the reason he was not hired was because even if they did not do a criminal background check they still would not hire him since the undercover security who arrested him for shoplifting 11months ago was transferred to this store he was applying at. He was honest about this and put his arrest for shoplifting at that other Walmart, and he wrote about his shoplifting at Kmart which was 12 months ago. However it was not his fault, his friends used peer pressure on him and they forced him to steal. They threatened him if he did not. They mocked him, and belittled him.

if a hiring manager has a choice between two employees...one with no ciminal background, and the other with a criminal background, which do you think they will choose? Hmmm...

Gino, I think the better lesson would be not to do things you are not supposed to do in the first place. As for hiring the criminal because they know how how other criminals think that's one way to look at it. :D

Okay your son just turned 16 and he already has not one but several encounters with the police? That should be your first indication that you need to step up and shape him up. But like many other teenagers who are arrested, the parents act like their children are innocent. If your son was threatened into stealing than when he informed you about this you should have contacted the police. Seriously if your friends are going to pressure him into doing things he knows is wrong and then going to threaten him if he does not than he needs to find new friends. Also if he was not honest with his past history, someone who knows him would eventually tell the store of his past history an he would have been fired anyway for not being honest about his past. Instead of making excuses for him discipline him for his behavior.

I had something similar happen. I applied to walmart and was called in for an interview. I get there and the manager to interview me was no where to be found. i finally found an employee to find the manager. 15 min later, the manager finally shows up and interviews me. It went ok. then she told me I had a second interview with the assistant manager. she goes to get him, im waiting 20 more minutes. then she comes back, and we both wait 10 more min till he shows up. Then he walks by saying he will be with us in a minute. 15 more minutes before he finally comes and sits down. the employees were all running around like chickens with their heads cut off. he leaves several times through the interview for 10 minute intervals. after 2 hrs of this, he tells me im hired and i need to take the drug test within 24 hrs (which i did immediately after) and i would get a call within 24-48 hrs about orientation. 3 days later the call never came. I called to ask about it and the manager i spoke to didnt even let me explain that he said i was hired and did everything before she said "that means u werent hired" and hung up. I have no history with any issues with the law or doing anything wrong. i know my background was clean and this was completely unneccessary rude not to mention a waste of my time money and gas that i now cant make up.

I have also applyed to walmart, And I receive a call for an interveiw and once I was there I was interveiwed by 3 managers and they had told me that they decided to hire me and i went over to file out the paper work on the computer employee agreement of hiring. I went straight from walmart in wooster and done my drug screen and walmart sent my background to be check 3 weeks later they told me I failed to pass my criminal background which I thought was odd because I could passes a FBI, CIA, and Dea background check. so yesterday I got a call from walmart in masslion ohio for a job interveiw and I explianed to the women on the phone what was going on she gave me the number for the company whom done my background check I found out I did Pass my criminal background and drug screening but I was still red flag for no reason!

It's been 14 days and I'm still waiting on my background check to clear. I call and ask for the hr department and she's busy or not around. I did speak with her once and again they are still waiting on background check. I was interviewed only once and sent for drug test in one day. I know I passed the drug test and as for the background check I was honest. I do have two dui convictions from feb/ march 2012 back to back. It was a bad year and I went through a divorce custody battle for my son. Anyway I was honest about it on the application. I'm not sure if that's why it's taking so long or if they are just avoiding me but I need the job.

Walmart didn't hire him because he is underage. It has been policy for quite a few years that you must be 18 years old to work there. I know back in 1999 and 2000 they did hire 16 and 17 year olds but it became a problem because in some states there are rules as to how many hours and what hours a minor can work a week because of school. Another thing is that a minor is not permitted to operate power equipment such as slicers, balers, floor polishers etc.

I worked for Walmart seasonal for Christmas 2014 and 2015. I had a background check done both times and passed. Now 4 months later I accept a permanent position and have to do another background check. The third. I don't get a call and after a week I go to the store and talk to the HR lady. She tells me my background check is still pending. She calls them and they tell her I will receive a letter in the mail. I finally get the letter and it shows a bounced check from 2000. Why did this not come up the first two times? Plus your really not going to hire someone who bounced a check 16 yrs ago? Get real Walmart! Who goes back 16 yrs on a background check for a stocker anyway. You would think I was going to be the store manager or something. I know of people that work at Walmart that have drug convection and they get hired. Go figure!

This happend to me today, I got the job and I was waiting on a call for orientation, but the call never came, I got a review of my background check and it was clean, which is weird because I have a A misdemeanor, but because I was HONEST and put down that I did have a record their "policy" says I lied and somehow I cannot work there, IDK if a diversion program happend or what if so I wasn't informed of it and SHOULD have been, anyway its pretty dumb that because I was honest, I didn't get this job because my record is clean, I don't see how that is grounds for not hiring someone a clean record is better then something on it, WTF Walmart, just keep losing good honest workers over your stupid policy and lazy HR people. The system is broken.
