So you start working for a company at an early age. They decide to offer benefits and those include pensions, and healthcare, etc. So as you get in your 50's you and your co-workers in this age group are obviously being targeted for layoffs, termination, and "reduction in workforce". You play by their rules for decade and all the sudden you’re worth nothing.
The CEO of your company sends out a letter and says the right people are needed in key positions and we need people who are in their 50’s to think about taking another job somewhere else. Obviously what was a very carefully planned event to avoid litigation, but how can you specifically target one age group in America? Oh and by the way JCPenney won't tell you the details of this "voluntary/suggested" request for leaving for 18 days and if you decide to take this deal targeting your age group you must agree to not sue us and must stay at work until your release day or you forfeit any deal.
Well, obviously there is a lot more detail and the full details will come out along with a copy of the communication. This is the new JCPenney and when you shop with them this Christmas I want you to know how they treat people who have been dedicated to them their entire lives. I am going to make this kind of employment tactic known and I plan on making a website, handing out flyers, contacting local media, politicians, and anyone else who cares about this kind of tactic to reduce older employees in your workforce.

I was dismissed on 4/30/12 along with thousands of others--excellent work record--good annual review--only thing wrong?--I am over 50.I find it amazing that they get by with tossing out their best employees strictly because of age! The media needs to be alerted and jcp needs to be called out for this! Ron Johnson you are 50--don't you still need to eat and pay bills?/

They need to be turned in for their discrimination and all the other foul tactics they think they are getting away with. Hope they are sued and go out of business...never been treated so badly by an employer...

One other thing, it's really pathetic when the store manager, in their employee meetings, let's the employees know she's reading all comments posted on comment boards, and in so many words, threatens them to watch what they say or else...isn't that against the law? I guess that's their new definition of fair and square...

I've never worked for JC Penney - but judging by their latest catalog they sent to me, they seem to have a particular disdain for older people. Everyone in their catalog is under 30, except for Santa Claus on the cover! Mrs. Claus is conspicuously missing! There were many clothing ensembles in this catalog that could have been modeled by older women - what's the matter with someone like Christie Brinkley, Cheryl Tiegs, or some of the older actresses? If they're not even good enough - then I'm certainly not good enough for you to send your catalog to. I'm insulted that people in my age group - the "elderly" (I'm 56) are deliberately left out as though we don't exist - and then Penney's thinks I want to BUY from them? Sorry, I'm shopping elsewhere this Christmas. Especially seeing that you've apparently discriminated against your older workers.

I agree with all the above comments. I am so disappointed by the "new" Penney's. I used to shop there for great sales, good quality, and excellent choice. The catalogs showed diverse customers of all sizes, ages, etc. There were employees over 30 who had worked there a long time and were friendly. I don't see them anymore. The store seems a little more organized, which is good, but the new employees are not friendly; I miss the sales and coupons; and I cannot find any clothing to fit my average, curvy, size-12, mature body in classic types of styles, since they have dumped their terrific Cabin Creek, St. John's Bay, and East5th styles. I tried on a JCP blouse in a size large and couldn't move my arms in it, it clearly was designed for a skinny teenager. I throw their catalogs out because I cannot relate to them and take my business to a "K" store now (not mean K-mart).

Mark .. Please let us know if you were able to get anywhere with your protest.
Yes ... all the former management employees know they were targeted for thier age and higher salaries ... company saves a HUGE sum to knock out any of the management on the 60 year old retirement plan before they hit 55 ..
