I have worked part time for Walmart for over 2 years. I have always had the same hours due to my full time job and I have always worked in the same position. Recently, I was told I had to change my hours of availability or drop to a cashier with a cut in pay. I explained that because of my full time day job that changing my hours of availability was impossible and that I felt it was not right to tell me unless I did I would have to drop to a cashier with a cut in pay. I was then told, I had no choice, those were my options, take it or leave it. I thought Walmart was supposed to be so family oriented and so concerned with their associates lives. You hear all about customer satisfaction, but how about associate satisfaction. No member of management has ever told me thank you for a job well done or praised me for going out of my way to do things I don't have to do. I hear other associates complaining all the time when they are are asked to do things, making comments like "that''s not my job". I always do what I am asked respectfully even if I don't like it or want to because I feel that Walmart is my job regardless of the task. However, to be told I must change my hours or be demoted with a cut in pay does not seem fair to me at all.

Welcome to Wal-Mart, who reluctantly hand you your paycheck, as they consider it a "perk" of the job in our ### economy. They would chain you to the cash register if they could. Saves them money.

Soon it will all be done by robots anyway. So, no worries...

I am in the same position as you. I've worked there for amost 3 years, and always closed from 2-11 in my dept. A few months ago we were all told "A computer is now doing the scheduling. Either change it or you won't get scheduled." While we weren't threatened with paycuts, they dumped out dept managers, sent away our assistant managers (To get new asst mgrs) and hired a ton of "Zone Managers". I went from 40 hours to 24... and was one of the luckier ones.

They've done nothing but lie to us since this went into effect. And god forbid we bring up the fact that mgmt is the one doing the scheduling... not many of us believe the computer thing anymore... too many "if they won't work, cut their hours" and "yeah, I scheduled you to work even though you requested those days 4 months ago and they were approved."

So now I get to play 4 an a half hour shifts in other depts, while my own goes unstaffed.

I have been with Wal-Mart for 11 yrs. now and have worked for 3 Super Wal-Marts. I worked in Texas for 10 of the 11 yrs. Now I am in Oregon and am very unhappy with the way the schedules are done in our store. We also have been told that the computer does our schedules so therefore almost all of us work strange hours opening, closing, mid, split days off! We are all making more mistakes, complaining more half the time we don't know what day it is. There is favoritism some people have set schedules so that does tell me that they do go in and fix it for some but not all. The store manager does have power because I came from a wonderful store because the store manager was for his people and knew he would not be where he was if it was not for all of us. I could go on and on but the bottom line is we all can fight back if we stood together. It is a shame that we are afraid to speak up for fear of losing our jobs.

I've worked for "Wally-World" for two years (since building of new superstore)
When I was hired, they asked me about my shift preference. I said days of course, since hours were an open choice.
Now, since the new "better customer service policy" came into effect my hours are so radical that required rest between shifts is non-existent.

Actual Schedule for 1 week: 7-4, Off, 8:30-5:30, 2:30-11:30, 7-4, 2-11, Off **Notice the 7 1/2 hours rest between shifts...Illegal?

This new system has everyone so messed up we are ceasing to function to "better serve the customer" Now, most of us are too tired to care.
Sam's policy of "Respect for the individual" went right out the window.
As far as customer's concerns...Walmart doesn't even listen to the customer's concerns. Products are CONSTANTLY being moved around the store in various places. Most times, more than twice a week. If Walmart would listen to the customer they would find that a customer wants to FIND what they're looking for when they come in...not TOUR the store in hopes that they find it! Things change so much that often times we don't even know where some items are located. This is just a taste of the problems we are going through.

I myself have been working for walmart for almost 3 years now, so our wal-mart is doing this thing where if you decide you want to change your availability, you have to sign this sheet saying that if you don't get enough hours that you are in turn "agreeing" to quitting... EVEN IF YOU ARE OPENING YOUR AVAILABILITY YOU HAVE TO SIGN IT! Does this not sound very unethical?... it doesn't seem right, a lot of us are talking about going to the board of ethics with this one... So if you sign this sheet you are signing away your rights to unemployment if they decide they don't need you anymore..

Wal-mart sucks. they treat their employees like [censor] the managers are rude and dont give a crap and the ones i work for are wores then hill billy hicks what a freak show at my store managers date employees asst managers date employees and get pregnet.What a bunch of unprofessional [censor]. And what a joke open door is i used it more then once the last time they told me well its wal-mart wtf? WTF? Really?! walmart. the hours suck "COMPUTER GENERATED BS".. 85% of the customers that shop there are rude and have no home training and expect everthing for free like it's not cheap enough already. this is why i am going to quit very soon and put my diplomas and licenses to good use and make real money. the money at wal-mart is not enough for what this company ask of you.

ive worked at walmart for 3 years, and metaphorically speaking, I would love to see the place burn to the ground. with no customers inside of course, except for those especially nasty ones who think it's their job to ruin other people's [censor]in day!

the walmart here is good about making people change their availability. they tried that crap with me so i waited until there was a 2 truck night and walked in and quit. my department had 19 skids that night. no one else would be able to get them done

That's how I feel everyone writing ESP the one about hillbillies and [censored]s welcome to my Walmart half of everyone is rude they yell at the cashiers which I am one if we are caught talking to another cashier even though mangement and csm are standing around talking to each other about bs to my availibitily is ridiculous I know I'm lucky to have a job but why do I have to close at night and wake up early the next day no I havent complain to anyone because i am one who doesn't want to lose my job or make it look like I hate working here or something but after reading eveyones comments I decided to take a stand today and demand my schedule to be a set schedule I can't work late at night come in early next day and smile or be happy and cheerful like they except hell icant even sleep at night Walmart is controlling and I'm tired of it

I just got fired from Walmart on Wednesday. I'm very hard-working, very customer-oriented and polite and friendly. I do, however, have medical conditions that affect my mobility at times. I do not complain, I simply work hard and do the best I can. I constantly got coached for not being able to do the work of 2 people, being tired and making minor mistakes(Putting a shirt on the wrong rack for instance) even though the erratic scheduling and lack of sleep was the obvious cause for that particular issue. They allow supervisors to make discriminatory and harrassing comments to associates and claim they reprimand them, but one supervisor in particular has had numerous complaints against her yet still has her job. (I'm the, I believe, 5th associate under her to either quit or be fired within the last year or so)...The whole respect for the individual is a joke. I actually got reprimanded for "wasting too much time assisting customers causing me to get behind on my real job" at one point. Never mind that in the back by the time clock there's a big poster that says we should go out of our way to help customers with anything they need. As hard as it is right now to not have income coming in, part of me is a little relieved to be out of that hellhole. (oh and on firing me I was told I was rehireable after 31 days...so, guess I'm not a horrible employee? Whatever.)

Mrs.Penguin, as long as Wal-Mart was made aware of your medical condition, (and I mean store mamagers, dept. managers, supervisors), reasonable accommodations / expectations specific to your capacities are required by law under the Americans with Disabilities Act. If you believe they fired you due to your medical condition (which they probably did, but likely covered their ### by saying it was something else), then you ought to collect whatever documentation you have and attempt to sue them. They can't keep doing this to people, and will continue to do it unless people make noise. Workers are losing their rights every day to big corporate entities who do not care about employees in the least. They are a-moral entites and will not do the right thing, or learn their lesson unless the ousted people force them to. That's just how it is.

I was fired nearly two weeks ago, and it is a hellhole. I was written up three times by the same manager, then fired by her. The first one was for leaving the game case unlocked-which isn't possible without leaving the keys in the case, and I had the keys the whole night. The second one was for not working fast enough, and even though another employee and I were working the same pallet and I was working faster than him, I got a writeup and got told to mind my own business about other employees when I argued with that response. The third writeup was for watching TV. Now I understand this is a real reason to be written up, but let me explain: electronics at night is terrible. You work on freight for four hours, do what they call "zoning" (basically just making all of the products pulled to the front and nice looking) on two other areas and the entire electronics area, and then you have 2 hours to walk around and do absolutely nothing because all of your work is done and it's 5:00 A.M., IE, no customers. There HAS to be someone on staff in electronics, and you have no tasks to do, and the TV is playing a movie in the background. So I watched for customers and waited for the day to end while watching the T.V. The thing is though, EVERYONE does this, and I'm the only one in the history of that Wal-Mart who's ever been written up for it. I've gone into that Wal-Mart during the day and the employees were too busy watching TV to ring me up, and I immediately dropped everything for customers, no matter if I was in the middle of working or not. The last day I worked there, I got fired for not putting up THREE boxes. Out of the three hundred I'd worked earlier, I'd say 1% of the boxes is not a bad amount to miss, considering other employees constantly missed up to 10 boxes per day and I had to go back and put them up.

When they bring you into the office, they bring one or two other managers with them. Then, they corner you, make you feel stupid about any mistakes you've made (even small ones like being sick and not able to work very hard), and then write you up and make you write a response about it. If your response solicits that it was your manager's fault (even if it was), they make you CHANGE your comment, or make you put "no response".

They are PREYING on you, people. They are taking advantage of long unemployment lines to reap the benefits of someone willing to work twice as hard for half the pay. Don't work for them if you know what's best for you.

i completely agree with /b/nonymous, walmart is nothing but a stupid ### hole, im on a written for attendance (mostly my fault but when a family member is rushed into surgery, thats important too me, they REFUSED my docs excuse due it was only for 1 day) not only am i pissed off about it, but they cut me from 38hours a week down too 21 hours, not sure what they hell there trying too do, but 21 hours a week can barely pay for anything lately, then too top it all off, im a Cashier, and being stalked by a CSS at work isnt the greatest environment too work in, i notified walmart 6 weeks ago and still nothing has been done, went too the next step and got nothing there not exactly sure what to do...any suggestions?

Companies do this to exert control over you. There is no room for a personal life in big-box retail. They have not soul, no tolerance for human troubles of any sort. It is serfdom. They act like they own you. Unless you eat, sleep, and s#it Wal-Mart they will treat you like ###, then take issue with your attitude should it react to such treatment.

I have worked for walmart coming up on 3 years now. I injured myself almost 2 years ago going to make this long story short. Turns out i had a bone cyst that was affecting my job. Had to have surgery was out 5 1/2 months UNPAID. wasn't work related so i was told. Finally get back to work. Changed position to salesfloor from backroom fine whatever i prefer change anyways. After being back for 6 months I had to go on a short LOA issues with my gallbladder turned out to be life or death situation. They said there had to be a date of return so the doctor not taking any chances did 4 weeks out but was ready to go back 2 weeks out. Brought my paper in so i could get back to work. Then was basically told that i had 3 different job choices on a different shift. Why do i have to move to a different shift if they have openings on the one i was on? I just want the shift i have been on for 3 yrs I don't care what i am doing just need that shift!
Am i turning down my complete job if i am turning down the shift and not the offers? In walmarts eyes probably.
Sam Walton is probably doing summersaults(sp) in his grave with the way his store(s) are being run now.
OK enough from me for now. Was just venting. but if you want reply i will read.

I'm a 20 year old male and I work at Wal-Mart. I started about 6 months ago as a grocery associate and had 5 other associates on our team. In a period of 3 months I was the only one left on that side of the store. Having to unload frozen/dairy trucks with a manual pallet jack -by myself-. Each and every time there is a truck I beg and plead with the managers to have someone train me so I don't have to bust my ### just 30 minutes into my shift making the rest of the day drag by.
I'm expected to pull full water pallets without help and to be in multiple places at once. I have 5 or 6 bosses and I'm constantly being pulled from one project to be put onto another and sometimes being sent to the door to greet people for a few hours.

Wal-Mart is the cause of my depression as of late and I'm not going to take much more of this. I wish I had another job lined up so I didn't have to go without work and pay. Here' to everyone who leaves this horrible "family oriented" [censored]hole.

my mom has worked many years for Riverton Wyoming’s Wal-Mart. After 9 years (I may be off by a year or two) of working 8:00am to 5:00pm. before that she worked up front . She was told by her area manager, Johnny. That she would have to change her availability. She will not so he cut her down to one to two days a week. She is a full time worker, trained as a photo tech. they give her hours to a younger part-timer. Then they have the gall to say its not discrimination (may be the wal-mart Lawyers call it defacto discrimination) because Johnny didn’t use the word old. What's the phrase “ actions are louder then words.”? The part-timer even got to come in early on one of her days because there was no help— why was there no help? Because the full time person had the day off to “teach her a lesson " by Johnny maybe if he can make her use up her vacation and personal time to pay her bill then she will bend to the Wal-mart Philosophy apparently is that the older Generation are only good to be door greeters. The part-timer has limited availability and is in the toys! but she is much younger in age and experiance then my mom. I worked at the kmart aross the street did the same thing people started doing all there shopping at Wal-mart. Brandan-store manager must want to give the shoppers back to them. if he wants to get sales he and his team should get back to the basics and whats the three rules ones like respect the individual? better yet listen to the survey they failed

I started working for Walmart less than a month ago. My interview had been nearly a month before that, and I had to keep calling in to ask when orientation was going to be. I wound up calling the morning of, and they claimed they called my housemate's cell number the day before. Well if they did, they left no message. I doubt they actually even called since we checked the call log and found it with nothing from Walmart. I decided to ignore that sign.

Then, when I was suddenly being told by the person who was supposed to be giving me a ride on the days/nights that I could not get to and from work by bus, that they couldn't drive me there and back anymore, I tried to explain this to the assistant manager who oversaw my department but was told if I changed my availability at all, I would not have a job. I tried to make this work, and I though I was, until twice, I wound up being given incorrect infomation about the hours I was scheduled. Unfortunately I did not have internet at home or home phone or cell phone with which to call. I had to rely on friends' internet and phone to double check. The first time, I had checked my schedule for the next day on the time clock. It told me 18:30 to 23:00, which is 6:30 pm to 11 pm. I arrived the next day, thirty minutes early. Clocked in right on the dot of 6:30, and then found out at 10 pm that I was supposed to have been scheduled for 5:30 pm to 11:00 pm. I had even tried to check online that same day but the mywalmart.com site was not letting me sign in. I brought this to the attention of a manager as soon as I could but the same thing would happen again. I had tried to check on the wire just after my lunch break and print out my schedule for the next couple weeks. However, I couldn't, because there was no paper, and I wasn't familiar with the kind of printer that was being used. I didn't want to break it or something so I waited, forgot til I had just clocked out because I was feeling rushed, and was able to talk someone in the HR room to check my schedule. It did not show my name scheduled for the next day or the day after that. According to it, I wasn't scheduled until Wednesday. I visited my sister on Monday evening to help her with an issue on her computer. Decided to check and see if I couldn't get my sister to let me print screen my schedule and then I could take it home on my flash drive and print it on my computer. It said I was supposed to work Monday. So, when Wednesday came, I made sure to come early. I was nearly 45 minutes early. I had some coffee, read a bit of my book, and tried not to stress out. Between these messed up schedules causing absences, one honest mistake on my part, and being late due to traffic, I was getting close to the 3 absences limit given for 3 months. I had not been able to sleep the night prior, nor the one before that and had a very screwed up dream involving my literally getting burned at work.

My dream was prophetic. That very morning, when I went to speak to Mary, the assistant manager in charge of the front end, she said there was no way that my schedule changed, that I should have made sure that the information I was given was correct (I saw it with my own eyes) and that because of the attendence issues, I was being terminated.

It took a lot of mentally going over the consequences, to convince myself that I shouldn't go and find some way to end my life. It has only been a couple of days and I still find myself crying because I don't know what to do and feel as though because of this bad experience, I might not be able to find another job in the same type of setting. I loved being a cashier. It was fun and kept me busy. Yes my feet sometimes hurt after a long shift, but I wasn't going to bed exhausted either.

I work at walmart have been working there for 5 in a half years and recently was asked if i was interested in a promotion to first shift inventory supervisor of course i said yes its a little bit more money and gets me off third shift i did request one thing that my days off be sunday and monday and they told me that is fine. Now this week i should have my interview and now my wife who also works at walmart as a merchandise supervisor was told that if i request those two days off in a row my hours will be cut. i have changed my avaiability before and had my hours cut by this same assistant manager. shes the only one that does this to me all the other ones including store manager are fine with changing availibility. My wife told that assistant manager that if they cut my hours i will seek underemployment. she replied with the response to that if i do then so be it. Im just so sick of the way they treat employees managers at our store work four and are off for four and yet fulltime hourly associates gotta work 5 days a week and cant even have 2 days off together. except for midnight shift. I seriously wished i had all the money in the world to over rule the walmart world i know i have the skills and the heart to run a retail business and run it for my associates so they can have work and family time. Sam Walton did not intend for this place to be ran the wy its ran today.

I have worked for Walmart Overnight ICS for 5 years now. This is the second store I've worked at. My first store I got injured at, slipped in a freezer doing pick list and messed up my back, and am still paying for it now. As a result I can't walk as fast or lift as much as some of my co-workers but I do my job as best I can. Over the past two months I've had numerous days where I was Scheduled off at 6 a.m. The management team has stated repetitively that "Regardless of the schedule, All ICS must stay until 7 a.m." If I'm not mistaken that goes against Policy. When I confronted one of the managers about it he threatened to nit pick all my work from then on and coach me for each mistake until I was terminated. He also threatened to change my schedules (even those already submitted to home office) to eliminate the issue. Again under policy, management cannot change the posted schedule without the associates approval. I have heard of other managers at this store going into the system and getting the passwords for associates so they can change and do whatever they want. My first store I wanted to report about such a thing when I had a coaching show up that I never had even been spoken to about or put in my password for. If anyone has a copy of the policies or the employee handbook can you double check me on these to make sure I'm not mistaken.

I totally agree with all of you. I have worked for Walmart twice and they are terrible. I just started working for them again last year and already I want to quit! The managers are rude and that store is so unorganized its pathetic. This is store 3119 Panama city beach area. I work in the photo area and electronics and I never have what I need to get my job done. I have been days since we opened and the week of the 14th they decide to give me a partial shift but a late shift with 2 days off to follow. I put in for a shift change before that schedule came out and was approved but I still got scheduled late. Im so sick of walmart I cant wait to quit. . I mean I love my job and my area but the managers are for c***.

My wife was recently promoted to assistant manager, hours haven't been great usually 8-8 3 on 2 off. untill last week. she's now working 8-10 and isn't going to have another day off till the 19th. that's 17 days straight of 12-14 hour shifts. unfortunately i don't see any recourse except telling them she quits

I have worked for Walmart since May 10th (the date of my orientation). The week of the 4th I got 30 hours. The following week it dropped to 20 hours. When I inquired I was told there was some fluctuation from week to week. Some fluctuation I can understand. I can understand my schedule fluctuating by two, three maybe even five hours a week. But ten?

Then I looked at my schedule for the last week of the month, the week that ends in the no sales tax weekend for school related items. One of the busiest weekends of the year. As everyone buys school supplies that weekend. Anyways as I said I was looking at my schedule for that week. I went from 30 again down all the way to 10. A loss of twenty hours, I can't afford that.

I'm going to ask them again why I am loosing hours. But if they give me the same BS about fluctuation I am going to think about finding another job.

I really like my p/t cashier position at WalMart. It has always been what I expected and agreed to. Here comes the however though. I have been trying to transfer from a store 30 miles away to one 3 miles away for well over a year because of the declining condition of my auto. Now I have a chance to make that change. HOWEVER, was over at the closer store today and they will not honor my availability nor even looked at it before calling me to ask me to transfer if I still wanted to. Somehow, since this is the same company, this doesn't exactly seem the way it should be. Wow. Never thought I would have any sort of complaint concerning my WM job. What a shame. I am treated like gold at my present store. If I transfer I realize that all that will change immediately.

Mr Sam Walton would roll over in his grave, this wasn't the way he ordained Walmart was to be.He was for the family..Of course he had a moto that the customer was the boss, but he didn't let the managers walk over the employees when he was alive, I was one of the fortunate ones to get to work there when he was alive.. I'm still any employed there and boy the changes are unbelievable..So Sad!
