Waste Management [WM] review: Waste management smart truck & excessive overage fees

Waste Management recently implemented a "Smart Truck" program to photograph trash pickup. They claim they are doing it to improve recycling or for safety. In reality the reason appears to be a cash-grab from its customers.

At the properties I manage, my trash bills have more than doubled because WM is charging "overage fees" If the lid won't fully shut, they charge egregious fees per incident (example pictures attached). At one of the sites I manage, our fees went from $2,200 per month to $6,000 per month. We looked to cancel our service but were told that to get out of our contract would require a payment of over $15,000. In short, WM is playing hardball with its customers and customers are given no mechanism for contesting the ridiculousness of these charges.

At one of our sites, our contract was expired and we moved to another hauler. We have our calendar carefully marked for the time we will cancel our other contracts. I strongly recommend anyone needing trash hauling services to avoid using Waste Management.
