Was employed with the company as a shop manager and Senior tech. I was the only mechanic, secretary, purchasing agent and responsible for more trucks and equipment every year, with no help. Fleet size at the time of my Feb 12 th, 2009 termination was 24 units. Upper management had verbally attacked me in "meetings", that were held behind closed doors. I had asked for assistance for approx 4 years, out in the maintenance shop; nothing was ever implemented. But during these meetings I was asked over and over to work a night shift, alone on heavy equipment. I had spoke up and said that I wasnt comfortable working alone at night, when no one was around, as the site was closed @ 5pm daily. So in Feb, 2009; I had been off work with my Son, as he was ill. Upon returning to work after being gone for 3 days, the site manager called me into his office. As I sat down @ 0830, he said I was being terminated for misuse of a company cell phone. No prior written or verbal warnings were ever issued. And to add more insult and discredit my way, Waste Management's employer response to reason for termination to the local unemployment agency was, " employee violated company safety policy, and was employed as a driver? For entire employment period, never was I classed as a driver, only senior tech, and the pay scale for senior tech. And not once had I ever texted any one from a company vehicle, nor was I ever warned or spotted using a cell phone in a company vehicle, sending text messages. The employers response was appealed, and the appeal was reviewed in my favor.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer's satisfaction.
>>during these meetings I was asked over and over to work a night shift, alone on heavy equipment. I had spoke up and said that I wasnt comfortable working alone at night, when no one was around, as the site was closed @ 5pm daily...
hence the reason u got fired
if you are ever asked to do something more than once at your job and refuse, warning flags should be going off in your head. It doesn't matter what your reasons for not wanting to do it are; if the company wants you to do something and you feel you have the right not to, you are putting yourself on the fast track to joblessness
I was laid off from a Fortune 500 company in Minneapolis April 2009 after nearly 19 years of very favorable word records. Six months ago our team got a new manager who was a terror and had a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde personality. I gave him two chances to treat us ethically and he failed. My company has high ethical standards that are stated to everyone, which we are committed to follow or can be reprimanded. My manager violated many of those standards. A number of women had taken him to HR and they did very little as his work behavior did not change much, if any, at all. He bullied and verbally abused some of us with threats in front of witnesses (though they weren't illegal). HR said they would do an investigation into his background but had to deal with the current verbal abuse he did to me. He immediately started retaliating against me and HR did nothing. Nor did I hear they where conducting the investigation they promised. I "cried" for help and was so desparate because nothing that I knew of was being done that in my return emails to my management and HR I said they were unethical, allowing a hostile work environment, etc. (no swearing or illegal threatening). Their excuse was that I wasn't completeting my job, which I could never do. I was laid off for an unfair reason.
Very unethical and morally wrong.

thanks for sharing your experience with waste management.it has helped me to speak out on my issues with them.your situation and my situation with waste management is very similar.
did you get a lawyer ?if so let me know, i have been looking for one!
I totally agree. Waste Management is infamous for keeping useless managers around. One of the idiot is the current IT QA manager. She knows absolutely nothing about QA, yet they continue to keep her around. she is very a bully, rude, and very unprofessional to everyone that reports to her. I was a contractor there and had to quit because of her. I spoke up to the director but that didn't get very far. apparently - almost everyone that are reporting to her think that she is stupid and unsuited for the position but sadly...this bad economy is preventing them from speaking up. I wish they would get rid of her and let someone else be in charge. But yet - they got rid of a lot of very good managers and directors...i am truly lost for words.
OMG...is her name Gina Long? She is such an idiot.
I know her too. She just got rid of an employee who spoke up to her and she felt intimidated. I use to work with him and he is the most knowledgeable member of the performance test team. Now the team is left with 2 useless dudes. I heard she is a real [censor] to work for. She is not knowledgeable with anything pertaining to IT yet the senior leadership at WM keep her around. she will get fired one day when she get exposed. I can't wait...
i SMELL CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT stand up fight for your rights
hosea_4vrs6@msn.com
I agree. People like Gina Long needs to be exposed for the cowardly bully that she is. Stand up for your rights at Waste Management. people like her makes me sick.
If you need any info on more of their bad acts send someone to Steamboat Co. The mechanic there wont fix trucks, bobcats, or anything that needs to be done just to show his power and try to make others feel they are learning a lesson for things breaking. He will spend most of his time yelling at his assistant and sitting around talking on his phone or try to find someone to listen to his stories of anything but work. The stories they tell about keeping recycles separated from trash is a lie. they throw out so much recycles it's insane. If someone came and just watched the drivers and how they run their routes, the place should be shut down.
I worked at waste management for 11 yrs last three yrs was a night mare they was doing everything they could to get me to leave finally they found some lam way to lay me off, all because I complained about the way they dont take care off the trucks, and because I didnt kiss [censor], wm sucks, worse place ever to work at, they dont care about employees, and the management well what management, they only reason I stayed is the money < I had 2 in school and wm pays good. but Im so glad Im out of there.alot more to the story, but im still thinking about a lawsuit, everyday work off the clock etc amoung other things . dam trks blowing exhaust in cab day after day, place sucked. not to mention things like charging for 5 day a week dump and holiday week give 4 dumps, making you run over weight otherwise u dont get rt done.
I heard some good news at work yesterday. Gina Long finally received her walking papers...YAYYYYY I here that there were multiple ethical complaints filed against her and her bonehead lack of skills also caught up to her. Payback is a Bitcccccccccch...I love it.
I love it. I'm glad people like Gina Long got what's coming to them. Workplace bullying have been going on forever. So whenever a bully gets taken down...it's always a good thing. Karma worked her magic again.
My husband works with waste management in BridgeportW.V. But is quitting soon he leaves at 4 am for work and does'nt get home till 8 or 9 pm but this is not the reason I'm writing . The lady that works in dispatch her name is Linda is total Bleep if you call there she is rude and thinks she is above everyone else. She will send the men 50 or more miles out of their way to back track to pick up gabage that was'nt out to begin with. Making men late on their other pickups and if they get help it takes away from productivity which cuts their pay. My husband is not getting his vaccation because they have so many ppl quiting the can't let anyone off. Linda puts pressure on so many men that I feel A few of the recnt accidents are her fault she gets these men so aggrivated and in a hurry that they make mistakes . These guys work far too many hours too they need to do something on corporate level to fix the problems and hire moe competent people for managers .. Telling te managers and boss there does nothing
I worked with WM for a little bit more than 2 years and I stopped going to work because a supervisor and his followers wouldn't leave me alone. I know its because I was the shop steward before called the integrity line wich by the way its nowhere near an integrity line. Talked to theold manager about it and the new one too didn't do bleep. Worse experience in my life working for them. Even the supervisor was "worried" about loosing his job and told some people he was going to call enviromental companies so they shut the place down. WM Stay away from them!
I worked for Waste Management for quite a few years and gave it my all 200% everyday. I saw alot of things being brushed under the rug. Toters being given to employees in areas that didnt even offer it as well as back door service given free of charge to employees and nothing wrong with them or spouse. Bills not being paid in full and service still restarted employees families. I had turned in into Corp office that was a mistake. I knew too much information. Then one Saturday I signed up for OT and got injured 3 weeks later I was fired yes fired no unemployement no work comp no nothing. ( I live in Pa what do you expect) So now I haver been dealing with Gallagher Bassett of Pa to pay my medical bills so far so good there employyes are real ingornant people and your nurce case manager thinks you must talk to them by law no you dont they get there report every time I go to the Doc you want to know how Iam you ask the Doctor.
If there is anyone in the corporate office of waste management that can contact me in reference to a major employment issue please do so. I need someone who is in the upper management please. My name is Frank Basile [protected]
