customer service / work
I have been trying to have my tank removed since I am replacing the unit with a ductless system for heat and air.
Originally scheduled for 4-21, no call no show and tank still there. Apparently had a sick employee so it didn't get done. rescheduled for 4-3, again no call no show. Just called 3 times to get someone to help other than 'i'll call you back'.
Both times I have had to reschedule the work being done around the tank removal. (windows and new system). I deal with the Woodbine, NJ office, Nancy. Told her that any additional charges I incur due to them not doing their job, or even CALLING to say they will not remove it, will be passed to them. Nancy's response is 'that's not our problem'.
Refusal to refund unused propane
will not give refund for unused propane when tank had 60 % left in tank when picked up. They put a lock on it 6 months ago where I could of been using to bbq. talked to local representative and they are clueless. After on hold for 10 minutes they claim it is company policy to not refund on a leased tank. Sent email with no response. they could care less due to I am no longer a customer.

2/23/17 @ 3:30 p.m. EST I called Amerigas in Fredericksburg, VA and spoke with "Darcy" regarding a gas leak as my tank was empty due to an issue with a faulty gas gauge on a hot water tank. I was given the $173 fee for a representative coming to check for leaks and that I had to purchase a minimum 240 gallons. this was all okay with me and I should call back if I had not heard anything by Monday, 2/27. I had not heard anything by Monday, 2/27 and I call back and speak with "Darcy" who informs me that as I was on a monthly payment schedule they could not come out. They were NEVER going to service my tank until I paid the balance. I asked if paying the balance would get someone here, and Darcy said "yes, Ma'am". The balance was then paid, and Darcy then informs me there will be a 7-10 day waiting period and someone should call me 24 hours before they come. It is 30-something degrees in Stafford, VA, I have NO heat, no hot water, and it will be another 7-10 days; however, DARCY did say that she was very "sorry" and then she asked why I was on a "monthly payment" schedule if I could pay. I am a single mother of two children and $2000 dollars is a lot of money to me. She acted as if I did something wrong by setting up payments and making those payments.
Tank
Our tank was filled on 12/9/2017 and the then emptied on 1/27/2017-They tried to tell me that this can be normal? After the nice weather and knowing how conservative I am with our heat and other appliances, I knew better, plus calling their emergency service line they told me they do not do emergencies after 7pm? We were on 0 and they did not care, period. I had to ask the twice to come and safety check the tank! What is wrong with these people? I am switching in March as soo as our contract is up!
Withholding information on "billable" charges
I had phoned them on 12/22/2016 about smelling propane. A service person came out and checked for leaks, found the source, and I agreed to have them fill the tank with 100 gallons. About a week later, I received a bill for the gas.
I payed it via credit card over the phone. The representative said that my bill was paid in full. Then around January 15th, I get a new bill of $151.00 for "service labor" and "service call". At no time on my initial request to the company on 12/22, or 1 week later when I was told my bill was paid in full, was there any mention of this additional charge. I have checked with other propane companies, and they have all stated that any time a service is "billable" they tell the customer in advance of the service.
I seriously object to this unethical practice. I can't imagine that they have any good will built up with customers when they deceive them.
I would love a credit, but from reading other reviews, I realize that this is highly unlikely.
Tank refill
This is absolutely the worst company i have EVER had to deal with. The first time i have gotten propane filled with them it took 3 weeks to even come to the house because i needed a safety check and they were that booked. Then they said they would deliver 3 days later. Nobody showed. After i called they finally showed up 2 days after that and said they needed to do a pressure test. I have a small heater in an office that he said did not pass the pressure test so locked out that heater and said he would let Amerigas know to send a repair man. He said the other heaters were fine and filled the tanks. I called and called to find out when they were sending someone to repair. After 3 weeks they said "we dont do repairs". Huh? 3 different people have told me they would call me when they could set uo an appt to get someone here. Whatever, ill get it repaired on my own. We dont use the office often, if i need heat in there ill leave the foor open. I called again last friday to get another delivery to come. She said "sometime next week". What the hell is that? Every company ive ever used tells you your delivery day. It is now a week later, nobody has come..im at 10% now and a snow storm is coming. So i call again. The lady informs me that im lying about calling to get a delivery and they will not be coming till i get that heater fixed. I told her we are not using that stupid heater but i do need heat to the rest of my home. After arguing with her and then the manager who continuously would not listen to a word i was saying, the manager hung up on me. She insisted my tanks were locked out, i insisted that the heater we dont use is locked out. I have never written a bad review about any company, but this one is over the top. I will spend as much time as humanly possible, in my soon to be very cold house (because its now friday and cant get a delivery from another company last minute) To let everyone i can to stay far far away.
No communication/locked tank/no propane=no heat
On November 23, 2016 my husband (a career army veteran of 20 years) called Amerigas to kindly ask them to fill our tank as it was at 10%. They required us to pay the full amount which we did with no complaint over the phone and the funds were immediately drawn from our account. The woman we spoke with through the Eaton Rapids, MI office informed us that the fill would take between 7-10 days to happen. My husband was surprised it would take that long but said ok and thank you.
Fast forward to November 30, 2016 where we came home to a fill ticket on the front door. It was printed out and said they had filled the tank with a total of 200 gallons (this was accurate for what we had pre-paid over the phone). There were also numbers written in as to the percentage of the tank at the start and end of the fill. These numbers were illegible to me (keep in mind I'm an elementary/middle school teacher of 18 years so I'm pretty expert on reading poor writing), so I asked my husband what they said. He said 40%. That made sense, they had filled to 40% based on the 200 gallons.
By the late evening/early morning, my husband discovers that the furnace isn't kicking on and my son reports cold water for his shower. A call was made to Hager Fox to come and check the furnace for issues. My husband stays home all day waiting for the repairman who arrives at 7:30 p.m. The furnace man takes a look at the furnace and states there isn't gas coming in. "Of course there is, they just filled it, " my husband states confidently. After a bit more checking, they go out to check the propane tank and discover there is a lock on it.
Obviously, we were stunned by several facts:
*There was never any communication when we ordered the gas that someone might need to be home upon delivery.
*There was never any communication after the fill that the tank was locked or needed further service.
*We had just paid $95.00 in service fees to the furnace man to find out something our own gas company should have told us.
*It was by this point 8:00 p.m. and was going to be very cold all night with no shower for work in the morning.
My husband immediately called Amerigas and got a corporate operator. My husband asked to speak to a manager. They had to have a manager call him back. He spoke with Sabrina. He told Sabrina the situation and indicated his dissatisfaction with the situation. Sabrina indicated there was nothing that she could do that night and that it was company policy to do a pressure tank if a tank was empty (keep in mind we called at 10% left in the tank a week earlier) . We asked Sabrina why we weren't notified. There was no explanation for that and then she proceeded to tell us we needed to deal with our local Amerigas office out of Eaton Rapids, MI in the morning even though my husband to ask for a supervisior above Sabrinan. She did say she could send an after-hours person out but they would charge US a fee to do so. Very insulting and disappointing to be treated as such and again here we are paying customers, a war veteran at that and we have to freeze all night and have no shower in the morning for work.
Today, December 2, my husband did as Sabrina suggested and called the Eaton Rapids office. They had more of the company policy excuses, no apologies, no explanation for the lack of communication, and no other viable solution then for US to pay an ADDITIONAL $100 for a service tech to come out and check the lines and hook us back up. I feel that this is terrible customer service, and an unsafe practice.
*Why would he fill the tank when he couldn't check the pressure? Is that safe?
*Why were we not made aware that someone would possibly need to be home if we were already at 10% and it might take 7-10 days for them to get there?
*Why wasn't a very clear, distinct notice left to CALL for further service?
If customer care is really a motto of this company and they wish to improve their customer reviews online and with the BBB, I would hope they would take a look at how they are treating people. I would also hope that they would consider improving their communication.
My ideal resolution would be a refund of the $100 to have a tech back out to check the lines and a refund of $95 to cover the furnace call due to Amerigas's lack of communication of the true problem.
I pray that there are still compassionate, reasonable people running companies out there. I pray that people like my husband didn't face what he's faced for people to just piss on the little guy without a thought.

Horrid customer service
"Thank you for calling Amerigas, where customer service and safety are our number one priority"... is the on hold message that you hear.
It could not be further from the truth.
I am a tenant in a house, I moved in on Feb on this year and I have had to put out nearly $2000 since. First a bogus $500 deposit, then a $250 safety inspection (which had already been done, but they denied delivery until it was done... again), and a $200 charge to hook up a stove which my landlord paid... but then I got billed for it (trying to scam double payment).
But the biggest slap in the face just occurred.
I was shocked to see that the tank was at 15%, since it has only been used for cooking and hot water since I have not needed heat for awhile.
I called to set up delivery on Wed 05/25 and was first told that I had to pay for it in advance (which I never had to do since I moved here, I was always billed). They had me up against a wall and they were unwilling to budge, nor explain why and how the account switched to COD, so I was strong armed into having to pay for this up front.
That following Friday, I noticed that they had not shown yet, which is odd because they have not yet once taken more than 2 days to fill the tanks before. I called and was rudely told that "because of the holiday weekend, it is taking longer to get delivery that that it will not completed until sometime the following week". I had a house full of people expected to arrive that Sat, and now was forced to cancel for fear that it would run out from cooking.
Flash forward to today, Thursday June 2, they still have not shown. The tank is now at 2%. I had to call their 800 customer service line to be told that it will take 10 business days for them to deliver. I explained that the tanks are very close to being completely empty and he was willing to expedite the delivery for an additional $300 PLUS $100 for after hours delivery.
I have never been treated like this before from a company that exclaims that customer service is their priority.
... and I just saw a truck drive by as I type this.
Stay away from this company, all they care about is draining the cash out of people from every orifice.
This company is a complete failure at customer service!
I have been trying to have my tank removed since I am replacing the unit with a ductless system for heat and air.

Gas Delivery
We rent tanks from Amerigas, so can't get filled by another company. We called on a Friday to get gas the next week-we were originally they would need until the next Monday, but my husband explained we needed it by the weekend and were told it WOULD be delivered by Friday at the latest. Saturday morning came and no gas. When we called we were told it COULD be delivered that day with and Emergency charge! We spoke to a supervisor..they wanted $210 extra charge. We will end our contract with Amerigas, but so disgusted by the customer service. I will recommend NOT renting the tanks from them...terrible terrible terrible!
Charging me $150 extra to fill my propane tank BEFORE Thanksgiving
11/23/15 Work up to realize we had no gas for our stove. Called our local (Beaufort County, South Carolina) AmeriGas provider to fill our tank, , and was told they would be out next week! We are hosting Thanksgiving for 15 people THIS WEEK...Representative claimed they would have to charge an additional $150 to come earlier...YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING! Also we noticed a STRONG smell of gas in our propane fuled fireplace...they did not seem to be concerned that we may have a gas leak...What is with this company? So...4 days before Thanksgiving and we are being charged $150 EXTRA just to have a driver come and deliver the propane...ALSO are they going to check for a GAS LEAK? Perhaps we have to have our home explode before they will listen. Noreen Sisko Customer Account # [protected]
charge to pick up their equipment
I did not get propane from this company for over 2 years. Each time I called and asked for a propane price it was different because I didn't use a lot. I asked if they sell me the tank so I could get propane from the lowest priced company. They would not sell the tank to me. So I told them that I would be buying my own tank. So I did and I called and told them to pick up their tank they said that they would charge me and I told them that I would not pay them but they picked up their tank and I now have received a bill for them picking up their tank. I originally did business with Backus Oil and they bought them out but most people have gotten rid of them because they charge much more than everyone else.
Amerigas quoted me $3.99/gallon for propane last November (11/2022). When I called in, I got an obviously overseas call-center representative, and told her that my neighbor (next door) had a quote from FerrelGas for $1.79/gallon, she said - and I quote: "your neighbors, sir, in West Virginia, are paying $4.11 [she literally said four-point-one-one] for propane, sir... so this is very good price." I said "My neighbors in West Virginia? I'm talking about my NEXT DOOR neighbor." She responded by saying "Your neighbors in Kentucky are paying - yup - four-point-one-five - per gallon." I said - no joke - "are you looking at a f-cking GLOBE? I'm talking about my NEIGHBOR, next door." Anyway, we agreed to disagree, and I told her that I wanted to cancel my services after 5+ years, as I was going with another provider. She told me how "sorry" she was to be losing my business, and that she would schedule a tank pickup, but that I would be charged a fee if there was more than 10% left in the tank. There was about 5% in the tank. This was in November, 2021... and they didn't pick the tank up until June of 2022. I had a new tank installed, and filled, in December 2021. Last week - LAST WEEK - I received a bill from AmeriGas for $185.99 that was listed as "past due". I called AmeriGas - FIVE TIMES - to dispute these charges, and was finally told that there would be a $146 charge for removal of the tank - THEIR PROPERTY. And that I was charged a $35 late fee for not paying the bill in June. The math doesn't add up, and the fee is RIDICULOUS! After spending a few hours trying to resolve this issue, I was told by the broken-English rep on the phone that their "system" was down, and that I would need to call back later to try and resolve this issue. AmeriGas has rapidly become the WORST company that I can think of. They don't care about you, or customer service, AT ALL! Anyway, I've filed a complaint with my State Attorney General's office, and was told that there are more than 1,700 complaints in the last 8 months. This is a [censored] company, folks. Never do business with them again. They closed ALL of their local offices during Covid, and now you are FORCED to deal with foreigners who don't even know, or CARE, where you live.
June 2016 - looking at the current Fed report on residential pricing (Oct to March 2016), price per gallon is 2.016. Why am i charged 3.712 in California? It costs 100.00/month just to keep 3 pilot lights on (wall heater, water heater and stove). Not being able to price shop is criminal. Think I'll write a letter to my legislators: http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/
Purchased gas on 12/09/09 it was 287.44 purchased again on 1/06/10 it was 352.94 purchased again on 2/17/10 it was 245.00 I feel that they charge whatever they want It depends on whoever answers the phone when you call.
I have been a loyal customer for 14 years and my husband at least 5 before that. We have dealt with constant delivery driver problems, being lied to about drivers trying to deliver when NOone has come to our residence.
Always run out of gas even though im on an automatic delivery. The company does not answer their phone and when they do and you schedule a delivery they never show up. I have been a customer for over 27 years tired of the horible service, im moving on!
Hi Resister. You can contact your local AmeriGas office to get the current price of propane. You can find your closest office at the following link: http://www.amerigas.com/find-amerigas-propane-locations. Or, if you prefer, you can email your account details to Fran at customerfirstfran@amerigas.com and we'll see how we can assist.
Actually, fuel prices change day to day. That's why it changes everytime you call.
I could have written your complaint with the exception of the twenty seven years.
Had them for about twenty before I moved.
propane tank rental increased from $40 yearly to $150 monthly when i refused fill
Got a great deal on first fill, yearly rental of tank was $40. once empty they would not partially fill. they would only fill for $400! At minimum wage there was no way. went back to 5 gallon tanks, told them to take thier tank. Six weeks later i get a 'rental bill' for $150 MONTHLY to rent tank. Called again, come get your tank and im not paying that. per agreement it should have cost $38 to pick up tank plus 3 or 4 months prorated rental. maybe $50. Now they reported to my credit and have harrassing collection costs.
They won't refund my money
I overpaid my budget account by $236. Additionally, when I cancelled service, Amerigas picked up their propane tanks and said they would refund me for the amount of propane that was left in the tanks. Both tanks were 3/4 full (~75 gals in each) for a total of 150 gallons of recovered propane. I have been trying to get my refund since September of 2014...

On 2 Feb 15, Amerigas, Sierra Vista, AZ was charging $3.88 a gal for propane! Barrnetts, Sierra Vista, AZ was charging $2.85 a gallon! GM Propane in Huachuca City, AZ was charging $2.25. I verified the price per gallon by calling and Amerigas was verified on my BILL! Propane companies DON'T have to post their prices so you get the bill and get the nice surpise of the cost of the refill of propane. Most companies adjust their prices, but Amerigas thought they would just keep the prices high and steal from the people who depend on gas for their heating. Over $1.63 more than than the other propane companies! This should be illegal. All companies that provide fuel services should be required by law to post their prices to ensure companies like Amerigas don't steal from the citizens of Sierra Vista and Hereford, AZ.
Boycott Amerigas. They deserve it. I changed to Barnetts and will NEVER use Amerigas again. Unless you don't like your money, never use Amerigas.
Over the past few years Amerigas bought out a number of propane suppliers in Michigan - essentially all of their competitors. The result? Propane has doubled in price. You can't sell a house heated with propane in Michigan these days. I suspect Amerigas got some government money to do that. In fact, I'd bet the rent they did. Eliminating competition in the marketplace is very important when it's socialism you're after. It's basic to it. Just remember that the next time you go to the polls - but even more important - never EVER! vote for an incumbent. I don't care who they are. You must assume they are all in on the game. Socialism is first and foremost all about big government. Government = big business without any competition. Do you get it?
20 lb cylinder
We have been using a gravity fed heater for years with a 20 lb cylinder which really isnt 20 lbs but I will come back to that. I exchanged the tank 1/28/2015 which when I exchange them I take 2 at a time. Came home from work that night and hooked it up because it was chilly. Which I've been doing for years. I sat down at the table to talk to my sister on the phone and happened to look in the sliding glass door reflection only to see a flame going up the front of the heater. I turned to see flames at the Amerigas tank so I jumped up and turned the heater off and ran to get water to put the fire out. To my surprise water did not put it out. My other half was asleep because he is disabled and hurts a lot but I had to wake him up to put it out. I burned my finger trying to help him put it out as did he. He is a retired engineer so he knew what to do. He went back to bed but I stayed up and watched it to make sure it didnt do it again. The next day he tested it to see if it was my fault only to find there was a nick in the seal on the tank. He use to rebuild steering for cars which you drive everyday and the pumps and wasn't allowed to make mistakes so he knew what he was looking at. The seal was nicked so it was leaking at the tank. If I had not been sitting there and seen the reflection of the flame in the door it would have blown up with me only 3 feet away the dog at my feet. We called Amerigas the next morning and told them what happened. They sent out 2 guys with a new tank (and to no surprise it is a BRAND NEW tank best we've every seen in 7 years of using their tanks) they wanted to take the tank that was bad but we refused to let them have it. We have called several times to no avail to see if they are going to replace the heater which got damaged and regulator but no one seems to want to discuss it. We know they don't fill a 20 lb cylinder to 20 lbs they only fill to net weight of 15 lbs. Thats the deal Blue Rhino and Amerigas made to cheat the consumer. That was admitted by one of their employees but if you take it to be filled you would get the full 20 lbs. The seal for the tank is only .03 cents per seal so for less than a penny you put people in danger of fire and or bodily damage or even an explosion. I'm using my oven as heat right now waiting on a call from them. This isn't the first tank that I've had to get exchanged I've had 2 others that the valve didn't work and the other one leaked even after the valve was shut off. So please be careful when getting 20 lb cylinders you never know what might happen. I guess I had an angel watching over us that night because we both could have died. My other half s advice is people use 10% windex 40% water with it on stream setting gently spray the solution on ever valve and connection use glasses as needed and watch for bubbles. If you see one grow or produce a lot of bubbles then the seal is bad and you shouldn't use that tank... PS this is from my better half Rick he holds patents on test procedures for seals.
Over pricing / price gouging
DO NOT USE AMERIGAS! They over charge an average of a dollar to a dollar fifty per gallon above other dealers in the area. We were stuck using them because they bought out our previous propane outfit and jacked prices. Took us quite a while to find a tank we could purchase so we could dump Amerigas. Finally found a tank and we had another local propane dealer empty Amerigas's tank into our new one, move the old tank to the side, and hook up our new tank which we own. Amerigas did not pick up their tank for almost two months then sent me a bill for $70 pick up fee, $9.59 hazmat fee, $7.79 fuel recovery fee (tank was empty), and tax. I an going to bill Amerigas for a month and a half tank storage. It sat in my driveway that long. I am so relieved to be away from that outfit!
AmeriGas is charging me the same $4 and some cents a gallon because they own my tank. I called and if I owned the tank It would be under $2 a gallon.
Billing
I was thrown to them as a customer promised my contract I bought into would be honored. I have not seen any of my bills within the agreed range of gallon price and they wont call my husband back on his cell to square it away. Also they said our program wasn't available with them. I was promised by my other gas company that I would get the same price. NOT. Calling AG. Sent letters called and asked for all backs on the cell and they call the house number that is not with someone at every moment. DONT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY>

fraudulent billing
Amerigas took over Ceninial Propane co. of which I had been a customer for 25 years, and I had never had reason to complain. After Amerigas became my propane provider I have had nothing but problems. They have delivered propane only one time. The driver over filled my tank and the gas would not vaporize, so the whole gas system in the house failed. This was in Oct. of 2012. I paid them $444.00 for the gas. Last year I called them three times to have gas delivered and they did not answer the call, there was no message promp, and they did not return my calls. In Jan 0f 2014 they sent me an invoice saying I owed them $375.00. I have had no service since Oct of 2012. I have written them numerous times about this fraudulent charge, with no response, all the while they are compiling late charges. I will be changing to another gas company as soon as possible and filing civil charges for fraudulent billing of the elderly.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Price Gouging
propane tank filled 12/19/2013 amerigas owns tank! $4.48 per gallon Price Gouging! Have friends with lease tanks. $2.89--
$2.99--$3.29 called amerigas they didn't seem to care, called national headquarters, recieved call from manager in my area,
she says price do to propane shortage in America. ask her why other gas cosmpanys sell same product @ $1.00 to $1.49 LESS
PER GALLON NO RESPONSE! once i recieved bill now charge is $3.529 per gallon! she did reduce price by 50cents per gallon, BIG DEAL gas is still $1.00 more per gallon, once tank is empty, no more gas from this company!
PRICE GOUGING BIG TIME! NOTE: been customer for 13 years always paid bill on time, this is how they reward you!
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Amerigas is charging/gouging me $5 per gallon! I got a very shady explanation and decided to shop and just got a $1.46/gallon quote for 500 gallons. Is anyone looking into suing them?
Amerigas was charging $1.25 a gallon over local propane companies. We switched companies and I called to inform them. They said I should of called they would of lower our cost per gallon. I asked them what they wanted to do about the tanks. They informed me they would pick them up. They did not pick them up for weeks. I called and sent email numerous times. They arrived 6-8 weeks later and picked up two of the three tanks. I now received a bill of $39.99 per tank for pick up.
This company ripped you off at every turn. They overcharge unless you complain, you pay a tank rental fee and when they come to pick up their tank they charge you for that too. Don't use Amerigas. It is a terrible company.
Hello, they took over the account of hertitage propane in 2012, and got filled up last week and here's the bill I received yesterday 1/18/2014 36.5 gallons @ 5.89 a gallon plus 15 tax 7.50 fuel recovery fee, and 9.59 hazmat fee, total is $247
I have another place and got filled up in Oct @ $3.59 a gal. you figure

Betrayal
I am searching for other former employees that have been betrayed by AmeriGas and their so called letter of why an employee left. I filled it out and everything I said in it got back to my former boss and everyone I worked with there. So much for their "confidentiality". Please email me and let me know if you have had similar incidents.
