Never order from Belk online. They will place a whole on your bank account so you cant access the amount of your purchase and then debit each item as it ships to you so it's like your paying for your items twice until the decide to release the whole on the total amount of the purchase. Besides all that each item you order ship seperately not all together like most stores. I will never shop at belk again in store nor online ans will be telling everyone I know not to and the reason why.

coat with incorrect belt
I purchased a coat for my daughter black friday. Due to belks error the coat belt was much smaller than the size of the coat. The coat was a size large but the belt was a small. I went to belks at friendly center to see if I could exchange the coat purchased with my credit card (my first purchase) and I was advised that they did not have one and that they would check other stores. The store in boone had one but would not do a even exchange and would not ship it to be at no cost even though it was s belk error. I tried to speak to a superivisor but was hung up on. I then spoke with a supervisor at belks and she said that she could not help me unless I was willing to pay $39.00 for the coat and pay to have it shipped. I could not believe that belks customer service was so poor that I could not even get any assistance getting the correct coat without paying more for it. I then kept the coat and left the store. I am so disappointed. I will not be using this credit card and do not plan to shop in belks! Regina mebane.

I wasn't even sure if I still had that gift card left because there was nothing left on it. So the manager comes over and void's the transaction off the gift card and could...
Read full review of Belkno associates tending fitting rooms
My husband was taking me shopping for my birthday friday the 5th of december around 8pm. I picked out a outfit to try on and went into the fitting room to try it on. Usually there are associates there to assist you at the door. None to be found. As I was undressed and trying on the outfit a teen boy walks in on me. Why is there no locks on the doors? Why is a boy in a woman's fitting room? Where are the associates? I will never again return to this store! I felt like if there were someone assisting customers at the fitting rooms this would have never happen.

Had purchased a dress among other things in April 2014 during the 'employee appreciation sale'.The said dress didn't have a tag attached to it, and do we were made to wait an additional 20 mints or so and a similar dress was found and scanned. After I tried it at home, it didn't fit me.After a month or so, went to return it.The staff politely declined saying that since it didn't have a tag (as if it was my fault), I have to get the receipt(I had misplaced the receipt). The transactions in my Belk card was of no help. After a couple of months, today, 08/03/2014, I had my receipt and tried again to return it.This time I was told extremely rudely by a store employee, called Lori, I can't take it as it has no tag(again, as if it was my fault), moreover she blamed me of wearing it and returning it.Her behavior was horrendous. The store manager was called, she was even worse, with a very negative attitude right from the beginning. She even said the dress was soiled(since I know except for trying it once I didn't wear it, Belk must be selling soiled clothes). Is this the way employees are appreciated, since this was our first time, now I know why only a handful(6-7) were present during the so called employee appreciation hour.Would like to draw the attention of the concerned authorities to make sure they keep well behaved staff at the stores, if one doesn't want to take it back, it's ok, some dollars don't hurt, I can donate that amount, by Gods grace, what hurts is the sadist bahavior and lack of etiquette, I am sorry to say that, but the fact remains .Thanks

bad workplace
I am a seasoned belk associate of 11 years now and though I have worked in numerous places this is the worst place to work! After ready all the complaints by current and past associates on this site and others, this site's complaints I can identify with totally. I served in the lp department 10 of my 11 years ft as first an lpa and then lpm. I have over 30 years experience in the business and law enforcement in general. You think that matters ? Not a bit. It shows that belk does not care about it's customers or those who work for them I once thought it was only the lower management, but have come to know it's much higher, and gnerates unfortunatley with th belk boy's !
After enduring personally the same things I have read here as well as seen it first hand on others, I had to add for all to see my experience. Being in management I was privy to their behind the scenes ways of getting rid of people they otherwise couldn't but wanted to get rid of. That refused to play the games with store management and mid-upper management. Policies are broken and only used when it's to managements benefit.
Want to get rid of an associate? Make life miserable for them and nit pick as much as you can and pile up the write ups (Which you have no recourse to refute) , until they quit or you get enough to then let them go. I sat in on phone management meetings by corporate to detail new ways of implementing polices ie: if you have associates wanting to attend religious services by law we must make an allowance for them, so tell them they can only have every other sunday off, and if they have 2 services they must decide which of the 2 to attend but they cannot have off to attend both. Therefore we have met the legal loop hole. (Peggy watts, chief legal
Person made the statement).
Take complaints by other associates against an associate, but do not allow the associate to know who made the written complain, will not allow them to see it, refute it etc, issue the write up regardless, and move along in the documenting process. Who cares if it's true or not. Good way to get your favorites to help remove those you can find no other way to get rid of.
Double trouble - no cell phone's allowed on the floor, if caught write up etc. But manager can hide their phones in their pockets and come up with excuses for same, oh and store management and regional hr dismisses it.
Insubordination - whatever they feel it is. No clear definition anything from a look to objecting to doing something you are told to do even if you have a good reason for it.
Now - lp, lpa's and lpm's shot at from both directions. Since store managers allowed to have say and control, your rlpm tells you one thing and store manager tells you something else and if you tell your lpm your a rat and disloyal tom the store manager... Oops your soon to find the door behind you one way or the other.
A friends exp. Great shrinkage, impeccable arrests and convictions millions saved for the company etc. Observed a known shoplifter trouble maker enter the store, another associate recognizes as well. Statement quietly made as a manager comes out to take them back for job interview. Sure hope they don't hire him or we will have to watch them for sure. Based on knowledge of the subject in question and past dealings.
2 weeks later, called in someone complained, not told who asked about statement, said had investigated and had written statements from others regarding same (Only 2 people present) asked for 2 written statements describing why statement was made and how persons known to the lpm. 2 weeks later, called in after 11 years he was removed from lpm position, busted $ 10, 000.00 a years (After 11 yrs of raises) , given 48 hrs to accept a position in the rocc team or resignation would be accepted. No longer had confidence in his leadership regardless of his past work and years with company and outside background, even though statement was made for a positive reason for the company. By the way subject didn't know about the comment, and wasn't hired anyway! Said he was profiling ! One statement !
Oh otm made similar statement about someone they had interviewed making statement about how the person was dressed etc and made it to several subordinates (Subject was brother of another associate!) , lpm was aware and countered, supposedly investigating for fareness was made, statements backing up the lpm allegation were presented by others result — - after getting the
Written statements, it just went quietly away ! Oh not the same situation ! Bull ! Otm has blood sister working under her as well... Oh that's right another written belk policy ignored about family members working in same store under family managers !
All in all, belk does not care just rake in the dough ! Don't like working here, get out ! Lastly, after no further raises and no opp to move up ward, associate ask's store manager to give a long term seasoned associate a reason why to stay with the company, something, anything answer after long quiet stare... You got a job!
Those who read and work for belk, get out if you can. A lot of 20 plus associates will tell you it is not the belk company the brothers who started it or rather got it from their grandfather, and not the belk company it once was and is putting on a sham to the public.
Discount - no... Raise the prices on items about a week before your sale so people think they are getting a sale, nope they are just getting it at the original price after deducting the shell price. The customer doesn't know ! Hehehehe.
A very deceptive and deceptive run company and the owners do not care !

false advertising
Belk issued an adverisement in the Middle Tennessee area for "$39.99 all sizes 400-thread count 100% cotton wrinkle free sheets by Home Accents Full, queen and king orig. 90.00-110.00." When I went to the Belk store at Cool Springs Galleria, the woman in the Home Store (outside the main Belk store in the mall) said that "they never stock the full sheets." So, I went to Customer Service to have the sheets delivered to the store (usually free shipping if you pick it up in the store at most places). "We don't provide that service. Shipping is $9.50." Well, it does not state in the adverstisement that you have to pay $9.50 extra to get the full size sheets. She called the store in Murfreesboro, TN only to be told that they, too, never stock full sheets. So, I call the main customer service number from the website [protected]) and explain the issue. The representative states that the ad is only "while quantities last." However, they did NOT sell out of full sheets, THEY NEVER STOCKED THEM IN THIS AREA yet still advertised them! He refused to waive the $9.50 shipping fee, instead telling me that I could "drive to the Huntsville, AL store which is only 110 miles away." This is not the first time I have gone to Belk for something in their ad that was not available for the advertised price. BAD CUSTOMER RELATIONS!

customer service
We went to belk, wanted to purchase 10 perfumes between four of us. We went to ladies perfume counter and talk to manager about the complimentary gifts. She said we are offering free gift bags. We decided to purchase perfumes for Mother's Day gift. After 3 people purchased new sales person named terry came in and old girl had to check out. Terry refused to give us the complimentary gift was decided by manager. She was very rude also.this is the second time this has happened and both the times she did the same thing. As soon as we see her we just walk out from there.i think she does not know the customer service concept., ultimately the store is loosing sales.

terrible customer treatment
I was treated badly by a customer sales person working in ralph lauren and lilly pulitzer at belks, at oglethorpe mall, in savannah, ga. She was a young girl in her 20s or 30s, and she rolled her eyes everytime I asked her a question. She did not want to be bothered. She hung around the cash register and sulked. I am a diabetic and my blood sugar was getting low. I had a hard time getting my credit card through the machine, so she yanked my card out of my hand and acted angry. I contacted the store manager, jennifer, and she seemed not to care. She took my name and address and wanted to send me something. Something never came! I contacted the corporate manager who was over all the managers at belks stores, across the nation, and he listened to my complaint and said he was going to send me a gift certificate. He seemed to not care either! Shock, the gift certificate never came! It was not my intent to try and get something for complaining, but if you're going to do something or mail me something - do it! This is belk's way of getting me of their back and trying to shut me up! I have decided to rip my credit card up and will never ever, ever, ever, ever, shop at belks again. I will take my business to macy's, neiman marcus, nordstorms, and other stores and I will shop online, but belks has lost me as a customer forever! Customer service is non-existent at belks stores! Good bye belks!
sundays
It is a shame the way Belk is open on Sundays. The founder, Old Man Belk, didn't believe that the store should be open on Sundays. When he was on his deathbed, he asked his sons to promise that they would never open the store on Sunday. They promised.
Old Man Belk died on a Tuesday. The following Sunday, all Belk stores were open.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Sundays should be a day of rest and a day for family...like it use to be. Belk and so many other retailers only care about the $$. If consumers would stop shopping, they would have to close.
I dislike the fact we have to now work longer hours without notice, standing at POS while it is busy, ringing for 3-4 hrs straight and they will not even provide a padded mat for employees. But, they say the care :/
That's because Tim and Johnny Belk only worship one god: the almighty dollar.
I understand J.C. Penney o. was the same way, their stores did not open on Sundays until after Mr. Penney died. Personally I'd like to see a return to stores closing on Sunday. Think of the impact on the environment closing stores one day a week would have, less greenhouse gases produced by electricity generating plants and cars.
store manager
I was shopping in the belks in beaufort south carolina and I am here to tell you that a ms. Olszewski is a very rude individual and I will not ever shop in your beaufort belks store again as long as she is there. I didn't know that a belks manager could be so rude and crude to patrons who spend money in their stores. You need to do something with her, according to her employees they agreed that she is rude and not a very nice person. What is belks coming to these days.

The store manager treats her employees, as well as customers with disrespect. She cuts people short and acts as though she's busy about the sales floor when in all actuality she is catering to her favorites. She has a small clique(Mean Girls) I like to call them, which consists of Candy West only one I will name. Candy is one of the maintenance chicks that very rarely completes anything she starts, understandably because of a cut in hrs I suppose. The time spent chatting it up with her people could be spent doing her job. The others behaviors fluctuate depending on the time of day and season. She has also hired a new ASM Tanya NOT SURE OF HER LAST NAME, if I had it I'd give that as well. She's like a Minnie Me version of Debbie Zoha. Tanya has done a better job of getting things done than the store manager, however she talks to people like she's talking to her children(belittling/berating) the staff. Back to Debbie(SM), she runs around like a chicken with her head cut off, which she doesn't needd to if she would just release some control to one of the many managers on duty. Doris/Patrick are the newest managers. They have been excellent in customer care, as well as being considerate of employees. The store is falling apart and I think it's KARMA mainly. Loss Prevention is lacking, therefore merchandise is walking out the doors at a rapid pace. Belks is supposed to be a family environment rooted in good morals/values. No such thing has been displayed to me. The store would be a great success and a better work environment if they would let go of a few bad seeds, mainly(Debbie, Tanya, and Candy).

refund policy, quality issues
I have shopped at Belks for years, but I will not shop there any longer. I, like many people, use my check/debit card when shopping mainly because I live in a Metropolitan area and it is dangerous to carry cash. The last time I shopped at Belks in Bethelehem, Georgia I bought 67.68 worth of clothing. Over the past few years I have noticed that the quality of clothing has gone down. I have had to return items that were under the "Belks" label (disguised as a different label name) that pilled badly after one hand wash and items that actually became stretched with careful washing and would not fit properly around the chest and neck anymore. I was always given the money back on the debit/check card I used without any issues.
The last time I went in, I bought 67.68 in 3 separate shirts/blouses. These items have also become mishapen after carefully following the washing instructions. In fact, one of the items lost fibers that were floating in the sink water and the cloth now has a sheerness to it that it did not have before.
It is a quality issue. So, I want to return them.
The problem is I no longer have the debit/check card I used when purchased. I am being told I cannot get cash back and they would only offer a gift card for purchases in store. This is unacceptable for me as I no longer want to purchase clothing there since I cannot depend on the quality. I was told the store does not have any exceptions to this rule and never gives cash back unless cash was tended, even when a card is no longer valid. This policy is not posted on any signage at the point of purchase, although the back of the receipt simply does not list any cash refund policy at all but only the policy regarding the use of cards.
I feel that Belks is inflexible and unreliable. I absolutely don't want to buy clothing there any more. I would rather shop at SteinMart or Macy's who oftentimes have better sales and prices then Belks.
I have a manager (on duty) checking to see if there is any resolution to this dilemma. Belks has been a part of my shopping experience since I was a young girl. My mother worked there for years. She bought my school clothes there. I bought my "prom" dresses there. It is a part of my memories and I am 57 years old. The store in Decatur, Georgia was a fixture in most city dwellers lives.
But it isn't the same anymore. They don't care about their customers anymore and make shopping with them very difficult. So, after all these years, I have decided not to risk buying subpar product from them and shop where I can get better goods and services.
I just can't afford to have money sitting on gift cards that I may not use for a long period of time and I will not carry large amounts of cash on my person and risk being mugged or held up in a parking lot.
So, goodbye Belk's. You've changed too much and you don't love me anymore.

bad management
This is the worst company I ever worked for, period. Managers gossip and show favoritism on a daily basis. They have a different set of rules for associates who are their friends than they do for the rest. I have overheard them gossiping about associates on the sales floor and I think this is so unprofessional. As far as working conditions go, it is a bad place to work. Management is never happy with your efforts and they expect you to do the work of 3 people for very low pay. Now, they started walking around with a notebook to write down exactly what you are doing and how you are doing it! They nitpick everything, even the way I was signing the fitting room log! Instead of micromanaging overworked, underpaid employees they should put all that effort into overhauling their management practices. Do not work here!
I realize that I am not paid to think but sometimes I just can't help it :)

This is what happens when you have no Unions to support employees...
in store account payment
I was in Staunton and wanted to make a payment against my account with Belks. While Belks will gladly take your debit card or credit card for purchases, I had no idea that they would not accept a debit card for a payment against my Belks' charge account. I was informed that their in-store policy is to only accept cash or checks. I had already tried to make the payment on-line, however, since this payment was going to be from a different account than we normally pay it from and they only allow for one account, I made the trip to the store. Won't be using my Belks' card again. Paying it off due to such a ridiculous policy. Luckily there are enough other stores around that will get my business...oh did I forget to mention that with a large family, I used to use my account there frequently.
There ought to be a law...if you are greedy enough to take a debit card for purchases, you should be mandated to accept them for payments as well.

hostile work environment
I worked for belk less than a year and was written up numerous times - based on things 'someone else said' - people who knew the truth about events that happened to anyone were too afraid to speak up - because they didn't want to lose their jobs. After working nearly 30 years I never experienced such a hostile work environment. Management participates in gossip; lacks professionalism; the store manager is moody and grumpy; and most of the department managers and associates are disgruntled. The only truly content workers were working part time - or temporary - and didn't care about their jobs in the first place. Management expects a lot of work from all employees - with extremely low pay. It also complains about everything the workers do - and only acknowledges associates getting credit card applications - a corporate mandate - but not the treatment. Also for a management that lies to it's employees - it should not expect to have top achieving sales associates - after awhile - a company cannot get good employees - because they all leave - and word spreads in a small town! I came in to work several occasions to find my schedule changed the night before - and I didn't have to work - or my shift started at a later time. The hr department is a joke - it is as lame as the rest of the managers - and cannot be trusted - the hr manager gossips as much as the managers. This is a terrible work environment - and calling corporate - won't help - if you are considering a job at belk - don't - and if you are still there - run!

Are you sure you don't work at store 304 in Covington, Louisiana? (LOL!) This sounds like my store (except for the H.R. gossiping, our H.R. is awesome)! Our managers pull the same B.S.! If you work your tush off, you get reprimanded for every little thing, even things they make up so they can have an excuse to write you up, so they can set you up to fail. But if you hog the register even when the store is dead, you get patted on the back especially if you kiss up! Also we have two Penetecostal associates who have been told they can't wear long skirts anymore (even though it's a part of their religious convictions), and over three years ago, our regional manager fired an ASM because he was gay! And back in November, we got a new store manager from J.C. Penney and she won't let associates use the restroom unless they're off the clock! She even stands by the restrooms to see who's going in and out of the restroom! This company is such a bunch of Nazi slave drivers, they make Wal-Mart look like a walk in the park!
unfair
I have worked for belk for a while now. The company makes a ton of money; however, they do not pay employees fairly. They want belk to be a place where people want to work but they don't want to pay anyone anything either. Their loss prevention positions do not make any money at all. One of the lp's I work with made multiple stops, felony cases, and investigates a lot and only received a 10 cent raise! That lp has saved the company more money than he makes a year! They base the lp's review/raise on what their stores shortage is. If your store doesn't meet the shortage goal you do not get a raise. So that tells you it doesn't matter how many stops or cases you've made they won't give you a raise. ### place i've ever worked for. As soon as I can find another job, i'm out of there.

store management
I have worked for Belk for almost 10 years. I loved working there for a while. Now I hate it. The local managers are put under a lot of pressure by corporate to get credits opened. Charge cards drive our stores. Without them, Belk would go under. The money they make off the cards is incredible. No money is put into the stores for updates, cleaning or for additional employees. Our restroom is nasty, our dressing rooms are filthy, for some reason the floors are carpets and are full of "who knows what". All corporate cares about is selling credit. An employee can be terminated or have their salary cut significantly if credit goals are not made. It is insane. If the general public knew how sorry a company Belk was to work for, they would probably start shopping somewhere else. To corporate, we are all just cattle, associates and local store and department managers. They cannot be pleased.
