We bought a Maytag side by side refridgerator in the spring of 2018 for our new house. About six months ago, the ice maker started to act up, working intermittently. Finally, it just stopped working. Doing some research on the issue, it was noted on various web sites that the cable harness, connecting the freezer door to the main unit can become intermittent or break completelty. The wire harness carries the signals to and from the ice maker to the main unit.
Looking at the bottom of the refridgerator door, I noticed that four of the six wires within the harness were broken.
I was told the only way to fix this is to replace the freezer door at a cost of $ 900 and labor running close to $ 200.
Maytag offered me no assistance on this.
For a cable like this to break within two years brings into question a company's design and quality control standards.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
We have the same model Maytag refrigerator and had the same issue of non-working ice maker due to broken wires at the bottom of the freezer door. This occurred less than two years after installation. We have also been told to replace the entire door. Extremely disappointing.
Same model, same issue for us. Certified Maytag repair tech said the door alone cost $1, 092.00 which is more than half of what we paid for the fridge itself. Ours is 4 years old, but it's clearly a poor design and the lack of quality and customer service from Maytag really is disappointing.
After initially being told by Maytag that the part (and indeed the freezer door) was only warrantied for one year, my negative but honest review prompted a response from customer service. I agreed to pay $140.00 for the labor to install and Maytag agreed to provide a replacement door. Installed over 6 weeks ago and we're very satisfied with the resolution.
Wondering how this was resolved to the customer’s satisfaction as we have the exact problem with the exact same model. Was quoted nearly $1,400 to fix, with complete freezer door replacement.
Find it hard to believe this can't be fixed with a wire harness replacement.
I have a Maytag model MSC21C6MFZ00 with broken wires at the freezer door harness and have sent a message to their Facebook page but no reply so far.
I’ve been dealing with this same issue since 2019. I bought mine in 2017, and less than 2 years later, the ice maker stopped working. Of course the unit was out of warranty. I initially replaced the ice maker since I’m fairly handy/technical, but when the new one didn’t work, I took to the internet to investigate. I found pictures of the exact issue. After inspecting my unit, that was indeed the problem. I did a live chat in 2019 and got nowhere. I ended up soldering the wires back together myself. 3 years later and I’m dealing with it again, only this time ALL of the wires have been severed where it was only 2 wires the first time. I called Whirlpool this time but didn’t get anywhere again. $900 door or scrap it. Super frustrating. The customer service agent admitted that she has heard this complaint before.
Same exact problem wire harness cutting bcuz poor design. The wire harness is being pressed into bolt for foot pad holder.
The problem i have is i bought my unit 2019 they are still selling unit with same defect.
Where do I go? BBB? Whirlpool is adding revenue selling known defective that could cause shocking hazard or fire! This is ridiculous and illegal. I'll update been on hold for 15 mins. Smh
I bought my fridge the end of 2018 and have had the same problem. The first time the Maytag repairman was smart enough to look at the wires and repaired most of the know 2 years later the same problem except this Maytag repairman wouldn't look at the wires he insisted that it was the ice maker. After charging me over $285. dollars and had the same problem the the repair person asked me where the problem was before and I showed him where the problem was and after repairing 4 wires everything except the ice Despenser works. The Maytag authorized repairman informed me that I would need to replace the door in order to fix it, the door would cost me $1200. dollars plus installation.
This seems to be faulty parts and or materials and should be replaced by Maytag at no cost to the consumer.
I am extremely disappointed in Sears and especially Maytag for selling a product with the problems caused by faulty materials and neither company contacting me for a recall on a product that will fail.
Same problem 6 months after buying this refrigerator the wires under the door are broken they told me there is no warranty on that .
I should also state that the icemaker is not working and have not had ice for years so what do I do thrown this away and buy another Maytag ? definitely not .
Same issue here, I bought mine in 2018 and the unit stopped making ice about a year later. Local service technician showed where the problem was and stated the only way to fix it is to replace the door. Maytag was no help on this whatsoever. Very disappointing, This is obviously a design flaw on their part. I have repaired it several times and getting to the point where the harness is becoming unrepairable due to the wires constantly breaking. I will never buy a Maytag product again
Hi there! I’m experiencing the same exact issue! I discovered this issue on YouTube that seems to be common for Maytag/Whirlpool. How were you able to get this issue revolved?
I too have the same refrigerator also from 2018. I have been repairing this faulty harness with a horrible design about every 6 months since it was about 18 months old. Its a good thing I'm handy and know how to solder and make some repairs. Now its so frustrating to me that I can not repair a perfectly fine refrigerator other then the harness problem and that this will end up in a landfill somewhere way before its time if it wasn't for a faulty horrible design. It now appears on the newer models that have cut back on the plastic guard at the bottom so the harness does not rub and constrict as bad. I eventually did the same thing myself but it was to late. What a shame for people to have to go out and buy new ones after not that many years. With all the complaints about the same thing here and on youtube someone should start a class action suit against them. Its not right. If it were a car there would have been a recall.
I have reported this to the BBB. Please do as well. These units should be recalled.
Yep, exact SAME design flaw by Maytag! Model MSC21C6MFZ00. See photo.
