As a customer or should I say former customer of Dollar General, I can say it is the worst place I have ever seen as far a treatment of employees goes. I know for a fact the DM walked in and fired the Manager on A Saturday morning the first of Feb. 2011, and had the audacity to make one of the Assisstant Mangers work on her days off. The 2 Assisstant managers began working 10 to 14 plus hours a day with the promise of a new manger in a few weeks, it's been a few months and they still have no manager and have been working 60 to 70 hours a week with basically no time off. They look and act very tired, a lot of times I have been in the store only to find just one person working the entire store for hours at a time, usually one of the Assisstants, this has happened on more than one occasion. Why would a company treat people who are so pleasant and hard workers in such a way? I truly feel sorry for them. Dollar General has no family values at all, the only thing they value is the big old dollar. They put their emplyees in danger by having them in the store alone and expect way too much work out of them for what they pay them. They are making millions of dollars a year off the blood of their employees, welcome to big corporate America, I thought slavery had been abolished!
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I have a feeling you are not just a customer. Perhaps you are friends or family with an employee or are a former employee?
I just want to warn those of you that plan to apply to work in management at Dollar General. Please, for the sake of your sanity, DON'T! If you want to work in management, do it elsewhere.
I was hired as a keyholder earlier this year at $7.50 an hour. It was my first management position and I was excited for the chance to gain experience. It turned out to be one of the worst choices i've ever made. In the interview, they were straight-forward about what my responsiblities were and kept emphasising how EASY it is to be promoted. So, for the first week or so, it was an enjoyable experience. But then the manager got sick, and that's when all hell broke loose. As it turns out, the whole damn district was in such a chaotic mess that they had me opening and closing two different stores and not bothering to tell me what my schedule would be. This was fine for a week or two, but when it looked like NO end in sight, I went to the district manager. He did NOTHING but made me promises. Here I was, barely knowning what I was doing, working nearly 60 hrs a week! I finally quit when after it started taking a toll on my health (because not knowing when i was working, I had to eat out/junk food) and my relationship. Keep in mind, I don't blame my immediate managers...they had their hands full too. However, upper management needs to remember its employees and GET ORGANIZED!
Again, please don't work for them...you might not get your sanity back!
Honestly, this doesn't shock me at all. It happened to me when I worked there and that's one of the reasons I left. I feel very sorry for the management that is still there. It could be for a variety of reasons (in my case, they didn't hire enough managers to cover my manager that got sick, so since I was the key holder (3rd tier manager), I got stuck with the insane hours and workload), but either way it's BS and corp should hire more management AND employees if they want everything to run smoothly.
I was excited to be hire for 3 days a week. It was only maybe 5 and a call to come in another, and still hire someone else. The mgr said she had to give her hours cause she was sent from another store to place. LIE. I myself gave her the app and was hired the same day. This mgr forgets, and forgets a lot of what she tells me. The woman couldnt even find an employee packet; I never received one. Only a mgr and a cashier is on duty. The shelves mainly stay empty on all staples, esp chemicals while they just work on the newly displays. They dont allow any more employees on the payrole! As I was placed on the register, I needed to call for all things I ran into cause of NO Training, but they would come running and speak like I should already know how to process a check, ring up ice etc... I knew after that, and I didnt appreciate the rudness. Employee ID for paystubs: I asked for assistance but they were just too busy. I dont even know If I got paid for all days and dont know who to call? Has anyone ever tried to locate contacts on the web for DG! Then one day she called and wanted me to come sign something. Well, I wasnt wasting my gas; I waited till I was sceduled. When I saw the Work for Credit, I told her I was NOT eligable, but she said I HAD to sign it, and it was checked off to where I would be commiting purjury. I signed it, but lined OUT the stuff on the form. An employee survey I was given to fill out at the register in between customers. It was about our hiring process, training and mgrs. She waited for me to finish. If it was confidential I definately would have filled it out differently. No training, No communication and a lot of other stuff. When someone did not have a receipt I told the customer "yes" ; it can go on her card or gift card. When her card did not work she was screaming at the mgr saying that "Why did she (me) say I could get it.?" It was not my fault her card was bad, but in front of customers the mgr said I never should answer a question if I did not know the answer. IT WASNT THE ANSWER, IT WAS THE CARD. I also complained to her of the other mgr and she agreed that I should NOT ask customers for help. This is in ref to the big steel boats outside loaded with coke cases or charcoal or whatever. Its a two person job to get them inside at night and she just tells me to get it in and walks away. I dont know what she was told after my complaint, but on my last day she said "Get the stuff in and my advice to you is to ask the customers". One day as a male was helping push and pull he mentioned his 'bad' shoulder. On this day the big guy's glasses fell off and nearly broke. If anyone got hurt, do you think they would admit that they told me to ask? That mgr just found it to difficult to come hold the door for me. I only had a couple months one or two days a week totaling 10-12 hrs. I really loved my little cashier job, the customers, and straightening them shelves, but they made me miserable, liable, etc... so I left. You see, I still am searching for a part time job, and now I have to put Dollar General on the top of that app and try to explain why I left and hope they dont call them ugly people.
Also I believe their mgmt training needs to include employee relations/human relations/leadership qualities ...something to that effect. The comments were constantly flowing with rude and ugly.
I was a part-time cashier at Dollar General and my experience was indifferent. Store Manager, Assistant Manager and Lead Cashier are the only employees that work full-time. It's great to have multiple cashiers, however it's not enough money to survive weekly. I believe a cashier @ GD needs to find second job for my $$$$, unless they are high school or college students that only need some cash. They want their cashiers to restock huge amount of items which is unrealistic if its busy. The only thing I enjoyed was working with a few nice employees, meeting nice customers and being offered other positions by them while cashiering.
I think corp have impractical $$$ goals for their stores. Employees work themselves for sorry benefits and low pay. Promotions within the company is difficult for what I've noticed.

I feel you, I am on the edge of quitting and I only been there for a few weeks. Low pay and they want too much of their cashiers while the MOD and Lead keys get all the breaks they want and treat you like crap. Place is worse than Walmart, I would rather work there.
Um, actually, "little kitten", you could not be more off-base with your accusations. I am an assistant manager and several of our cashiers are so freaking lazy all they think about is taking a cigarette break and then having their 30 or hour just as soon as they can. Meanwhile, my manager and myself NEVER take our breaks because one of us is always the manager on duty while the other is off. Same goes for our leads. They only get a break if another keyholder is at work. So MAYBE you should check with your DM into getting some of your store's issues solved. Our DM has proved himself a very valuable resource.
