auto - billing scam
Care.com is very deceptive in their subsciription renewal process. I agreed (or so I thought) for a "1 month subscription" to the website... those were the words on the link that I clicked and agreed to. Long story short, my card was charged for the next month before I caught it.
Not to mention, the website is a complete joke. I used it back in 2008 when it was still free and it served me well... however, now that they require a paid membership to be featured, I was unable to find a job in the month I was (knowingly) an "advertised caregiver". Unless the other person is signed up and paying money too, it is impossible to communicate with other members about a possible job.
This website is a waste of time and is very confusing and complicated as well. I tried for weeks to get ahold of job posters, but never could because they "weren't paying members". Meanwhile, after 1 day on craigslist community page, I found a great nannying job... for free.
All in all, Care.com is a total waste of time, and they steal your money. Just stick to craiglist people, SERIOUSLY!
auto billing
Something needs to be done with company. I used the service one time in June of 2013. Since then they have billed my credit card for 12 months before I caught it. This is a total of $443.00 in fraudulent charges. They have no customer service to call and they only correspond via e-mail. They refunded me $39.00 and said that was all they would do. I would be careful investing in a company such as this.
I am a caregiver. I started coming to care.com when I was out of work( in August I believe), 2015. I opted to pay the 20.00 a month that would let me participate in their help for work in my field. I had no idea that it was actually to become a monthly charge taken out quietly every month.
Just found out this horrible company charged me $480 before I just noticed the auto billing. I only wanted one month... as advertised. If I wanted 8months I would have signed up for 8 months. What a horrible company... and they blame the consumer because it is written in tiny letters in the terms. If they don't want to be shady they should advertise this upfront like other companies do. I will make sure I tell everyone I know who has children to never ever use care.com. What we need to do is blow up the Internet and even contact the media to run an article on their unethical business practices.
I have had the same experience. In July of 2013 I signed up for, what I thought would be one month. I have been continuously charged
monthly and am now out $433. I am usually very thorough in checking my credit card statements, but, somehow this one slipped by me until just a few days ago. I realize that this is my fault for not checking the rules and terms and not being more vigilant. Other organizations that automatically charge one's credit card on a regular basis, always let you know a few days before that such a charge is taking place. I assume that legally they are in the right, however, a company that resorts to such practices leaves a bitter taste in one's mouth. I certainly will do my utmost to let my friends and family know to stay away from them.
I just had the same issue with CARE.com. I signed up for what I thought was a three month membership. I got charged $84 three months later after it expired and then 3 months after that I got charged $84 again! I caught it that time and I called and they took the most recent charge off but would not remove the previous charge. I never realized when I signed up that they would automatically keep renewing it until I cancelled. They of course said that it is their policy and that I should have known this when I signed up and it is in their terms. They never sent me an email to remind me that my membership was about to be renewed which I think they should have done so I at least had the option to decide if I wanted to continue or not. In my opinion, CARE.com is using sneaky, deceptive business practices and they do this on purpose to steal your money! They hope you forget about them so they can keep charging you! You also cannot speak with a supervisor if you call to complain, they just send you an email that you cannot even reply to! I will not deal with a service that treats me like this and refuses to even speak with me or hear me out as a customer. Care.com should be called careless.com because all they really care about is your money, not you as a customer. I will never use them again and will tell everyone I know not to either.
Same here, I canceled my membership on their site and all they did was stop sending me emails. 7 months later I find out I was still getting charged every month. How convenient for them to just stop the email so I don't even think about them anymore.
They are a big scam! Stay Away from this company! they will continuely charge your card even when asked to stop and offer no refunds! FRAUD
Hello Jeff,
I am a Member Care Representative from Care.com. I wanted to inform you that we are an automatic renewing subscription service, which is disclosed on the enrollment page before subscribing. Ultimately, it is the member's responsibility to cancel if they do not wish to receive further billing. I apologize if you did not find the experience positive, but many of our members find this policy useful, which is the reason why we have it in place. I certainly do hope nothing but the best and hope this information was useful.
terminated member unfounded
I was a member as a caretaker for a few years and my email got hacked, so I changed it. Care dropped me like a hot potato and I couldn't reach anyone at the business to talk to so I asked about it by email. They have this generic statement that they need no explanation! That is rude, unfounded and unfair! I think it is ludicrous how they can just throw you away like that! I am a 60 year old women, a previous teacher and business owner running a school for children over 20 years. I have never broken the law, and have the utmost respect with previous clients and employees. What a horrible way to conduct business!
Shame on you!

My story is similar. I am the mother of a young man with special needs. I had hired two different caretakers from care.com. I submitted valid complaints about both of them. My account was promptly deleted. I don't know if the people I had hired then complained about to care.com retaliated but I do know I was never contacted about any allegations of wrongdoing on my part.
Hello Bestnanny,
I am Member Care Representative from Care.com. Per our Terms of Use, Care.com does reserve the right to remove anyone and due to our privacy policy we cannot disclose the specific reason as to why your account has been closed. It is unfortunate that you were removed from the site and I apologize for the inconvenience it may have caused you, but I wish you luck in your job search and hope nothing but the best.
While I did not have the email issue, I am in the same boat as you. However, they claim I am BANNED from the site because they previously deleted an account I had on there. This is a bold faced lie and I reported them to the BBB. Did you know that they state that while they do not have to give you a reason for deleting your account they can and will contact the families you have been in contact with to tell them you have been removed from the site. They tarnish people's reputations after removing them from their site so that nobody will ever use them again. This company is HORRIBLE.
bait and switch
Care.com offered me a 'special' contract for $70 a year. I accepted the contract, and agreed to " all contracts renew unless canceled ".
At years end they canceled my contract!
I inquired by email (They aren't ' There for you' any other way) why it didn't renew according to the agreement.
Care.com did not respond to my question.
Instead, they decided to bill me $39. for monthly subscription! -6X the amount higher-(monthly) (They choose this contract because it bills at the highest rate!)
I did NOT sign up for this!
I wanted to auto renew my annual, as per the contract.
Ben the supervisor said that contract doesn't renew.
This is a ' bait and switch' scam.
They defaulted on their end of the contract: " All contracts renew unless canceled ". And i never canceled.
Furthermore, instead of correcting their problem their solution was to cancel my membership and make me ineligible.
Apparently, the " There for you " slogan is just marketing.
I was a paying member in good standing.
This is the worst customer service at best.
This business should be investigated for fraud.
Hello Bgauler,
You are correct that all of Care.com contracts will automatically renew until the member cancels, on top of that, Care.com reserves the right to cancel any contract for any reason. This policy is disclosed within the Terms of Use, to which you agreed to when enrolling. Furthermore, I apologize for the negative experience you had with Care.com and hope this information was helpful.
deceptive billing
I cannot believe the billing practices of this company! I signed on for a one month subscription knowing that I had to have a nanny within that time frame. I now realize they have been charging my credit card for months after I thought the subscription was over. Thank goodness I caught it, but I'm out $117.00 that could have went towards diapers, formula etc. I found a great nanny on the site, and was completely satisfied with the service and outcome. I am just horrified that they would use deceptive practices to have their customers sign up. Why advertise for a month subscription if this is a continued service. Disgusting!
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I have talked to an attorney at a Chicago-based consumer protection firm about a possible class action lawsuit; however, I am personally unable to proceed with it because my credit card company reimbursed me when I disputed the charges. If you signed up via smartphone app and you live in a state with an "evergreen clause", such as IL and CA, please email me and I would be more than happy to help connect you with this firm. It actually will not cost you anything. So if you are as appalled as I am at this unethical and illegal auto-renewal billing, and you want to help protect other busy caregivers, let's do something about it! Email me at tlschnei@yahoo.com and I'll share more details. Thanks! -Tracey
Their subscription page violates California's Auto-Renewal Law. They are deceptive and don't see to care that they are scamming their members.
After reading the numerous complaints against the company and having been charged for months due to care. com's deceptive policy of a "one month membership". Care.com please don't offer or advertise a "one month membership" if it automatically renews.
These types of tactics just make consumers mad and ultimately tarnish your reputation as being a legitimate business.
It is clear to consumers that having an automatic renewal policy in place on a "one month membership" is not in place to benefit anyone but care.com. This was made clear after navigating through the process of trying to make contact with someone at the company.
I am on board for a class action just out of principal.
Our family was also a victim of this company's deceptive advertising. Thanks to all of those who have been helping to raise awareness about the company's unscrupulous business practices!
I was taken big time for almost a year and a half before I realized they were charging an auto pay credit card that I rarely use except for a gym membership. I called the manager and explained I never used the service. She logged into the records and agreed she saw that I had never even logged onto the system one time. She refused to refund hundreds of dollars I got scammed for. I demanded they change the wording and sign up method for a supposed no risk free service. I did not see anywhere that I had to cancel anything! I DID NOT USE IT! RIP OFF! How do they keep getting away with this?
I agree-the same exact thing just happened to me with a three month membership. This company uses deceptive business practices and refuses to give refunds. What can be done about this?
I have also been scammed! I say yes to a class action suit. They should be ashamed at how the operate.
They have deceptive auto-renew billing. We were charged for no use and had no idea we were getting charged. Their customer service won't give us a refund. How do I get these guys to budge?
it starts with you reading the terms of use when you signed up.
Signed up for account via facebook which is offered on first page. Then signed up and paid for background check. While none of my info was being "approved, it was apparently because my facebook moniker does not match the name on my application. So I opted to close that account on facebook and open a new account ...Email the same, social the same, address the same..
I called today( with much difficulty because they dont have a contact number on site) and they can't transfer that background check to new account...again..same info.
This place is a joke. Id rather take my chances on craigslist!
Must be the same developers that worked on affordable care website.
care.com is scamming subscribers
Like many complained here, I have been had by care.com’s predatory billing practice too. I used one referral and later was promised to get “downgraded”. But found out only recently that I have been charged for one and half years. They prey on people who are less than careful in watching their bills. Even when caught, they would drag their feet hoping to charge a little more. They counted on a regular person’s unwillingness to go to any length for a couple of month’s charges. This practice is unethical and perhaps illegal. I wonder how they can sleep at night knowing that their earnings are largely from cheating. I hope consumer protection agencies will pay attention to the negative consent issue. And better yet, hit them with a big fat class action.
unauthorized auto renewal program
The auto-renewing subscription employed by Care.com is in violation of California SB 340, which took effect on December 1, 2010. The California Negative Option Law was specifically implemented to end the practice of ongoing charging of consumer credit cards without the consumers’ explicit consent. Care.com is inviolation of multiple aspects.
A copy of the Legislation is readily available at www.leginfo.ca.gov. (“Business and Professions Code Section [protected]”)
Many states in addition to California have implemented similar legislation.
Specific violations include:
(c): “Clear and conspicuous”...means in lager type than the surrounding text…”
The copy of the webpage provided by the merchant readily shows that the type referring to automatic renewal is not larger than the surrounding text.
(a) (1): “It shall be unlawful for any business making an automatic renewal or continuous service offer to a consumer in this state to...fail to present the automatic renewal offer terms or continuous service offer terms in a clear and conspicuous manner…”
The wording used by Care.com is not compliant with “clear and conspicuous”. The term “subscription” is generally reserved for the purchase of ongoing services, not a single purchase, therefore customers purchasing “1-month” are not purchasing a “subscription”. “Subscription” is located under the “3-Month” and “12-Month” plans (“subscriptions”). Because a customer purchasing “1-month” is not purchasing a “subscription”, the automatic renewal plan is not invoked.
Unfortunately, Care.com is the subject of literally hundreds of similar complaints. It would behoove them to ammend current business practices in accordance with the law.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I am the victim of over $500 of "subscription" charges when all I did was to pay for a 1-month-membership. Has anyone been successful getting their money back?
false job postings
I've been a free member as a child care provider for almost a year. They email me job postings in my area. You can tell which ones could probably be legitimate. Some a have photos and some don't. MANY of the job posts in my area are all the same. With the same exact description "Summary: Hello, we are searching for a responsible, reliable and energetic babysitter with a few years experience who can help us with our child. Thank you so much for considering our family." Why would there be more than one job post with the same exact paragraph? The only thing that is different is the title. One would say-"Looking For A Babysitter For Our Child" and the other, "Attention: Babysitter Needed For Our Child"
It's types out the same exact way. Most parents put a more detailed description of their ideal childcare provider. Also they state facts about their child such as- I have an energetic 5 year old who requires someone who is also energetic. Things like that. Or also state which intersection they live on or how they need someone to assist with laundry. Not like one i quoted above. I just think it's odd that I've been a member on other sites and I've found jobs through them easily. And their posts are never like some of the ones on ca.care.com.
I know there are real families looking for child care on this website too but not many in my area. The majority are fake. They probably have some of the people who work for care.com posting these ads . That's why those fake job listings never have a photo.
They shouldn't be aloud to fake this sort of stuff.
After seeing many nannies available and logging in daily I paid the fee and contacted several nannies. Several responded that they were no longer available so I asked if they had actually logged in that day or previous days and they stated no, they didn't. I have since looked at the nanny availability and the log in dates have changed. I feel like there many be some false log ins to entice you into paying for the service, very disappointing since it's fairly expensive and I am in serious need of childcare. I would have used my money else where if I even suspected this would happen.
Hi A. Lauren, Thanks for your comment and I'd be happy to address it and help clear some things up for you!
All members have the option of including a photo, and while many choose to do so, having a photo is not required.
In regards to the job postings sounding the same, these are not fake job postings, and I'm so sorry if you thought otherwise! Some of our families use our "Job Wizard" feature, which allows them to quickly select different criteria and have a job automatically created for them. This would explain why you are seeing some jobs that have similar phrasing! Please rest assured, this does not mean that the job is fraudulent, and we encourage you to also apply to these jobs if they meet your needs!
I apologize for any confusion, and I hope that this helps clear it up! Best wishes!
racists
If I could give them 0 stars I would. We have a group of 250+ people who have all signed a petition and are filing a class action lawsuit against them. There are a couple morbidly obese ###s that work there by the names of Caitlin and Laurie, both of whom are extremely racist white women. When I placed an ad stating that our housekeeper needed to remove their shoes upon entering our house, they cancelled my account abruptly and without reason and after 20 emails and calls, finally got Caitlin to put down her jelly donut and answer my call, and she said "we dont understand your culture here in america and we dont want your kind of people on our site." to which i replied "that is very discriminatory" and she replied "well we can cancel your account for any reason we want." Unfortunately for her, laws in the USA still apply despite whatever ###ic personal company policies she thinks she is abiding by, and we are going to sue the living hell out of them and have their entire operation shut down. I also have a PR team that isgoing to start taking all the stories of Care.com racism and discriminations and publicize all of them for people to know. Its about time their competition gets the leg up and care gets shut down. Disgusting awful KKK-wannabee employees. BOYCOTT THEM AND WRITE THEM LETTERS EXPRESSING YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT THIS!
Unfortunately, I totally agree with this person's comment. My wife is originally from Thailand and she set up an account on Care.com for some additional work. When she attempted to apply for a job her account was abruptly shut down too. I couldn't believe it and sent an e-mail off immediately to them asking for help. The reply I got from 'Jessica' was that they had the right to shut down any account at any time and for any reason. Really? If you are an experienced person and are trying to provide a service to people who are really looking for the help that you can provide, isn't it up to the family of the child to decide if the person who responds to the ad is a good fit for them or not? After I received that e-mail, I sent another one telling them that I would do what I'm doing right now. Let others know. Plus, I believe that the only logical explanation for why they did shut down my wife's account was because they are blatantly racist. It is the only logical explanation. I just got done filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau (only one of hundreds of complaints against them). I can't believe that a company with so many complaints can have an 'A+' rating. They probably pay off the BBB to keep the 'A+'. What a crock of ###.
I would like to know why am I still be in charge for something that I only paid 1 month for there's no way to talk to any body can't get a refund guess they're trying to tell me I have to cancel my card that is not fair
I don't know what these people look like, but if they made discriminatory comments, then they deserve anything negative that they get. I'm here because of their crooked behavior and stumbled on your post.
When you start name-calling and berating people for their weight your complaint loses all credibility (as if it had any to begin with) Basically, a load of C R A P.
caregiver killed our dog
Care.com does not do all that it should in terms of background checks. Several months into having hired a house and pet sitter, we discovered that she had a juvenile record, which she had never been questioned about by this company. By this time, we had hired her to petsit our dog, whom she killed due to neglect, lack of feeding and watering and over stressing him with a hike in 100 degree weather. I do not recommend this company and feel their hiring practices are entirely self serving and deplorable to the customers they claim to serve. I will never use nor recommend this company to anyone. As far as I'm concerned they are just as responsible for death of our dog as the person they claimed to have thoroughly checked out and hired.
Hi Wargmom, We are very sorry to hear about this experience, and can assure you that any concerns you had about a caregiver on the site were taken in to full consideration by our Safety team. We take safety and security very seriously here, and provide you with many tools to make a safe hiring decision. As with all background checks, the ones we offer vary in comprehensiveness. We always recommend visiting our Safety Center for information on the background checks that we provide, and what is included in these background checks on a state and county level. We again apologize for this experience, and if you wish to share anything further about the incident with us please visit our Contact Us page to get in touch.
This website is useless. No jobs, not even a single message from anyone, and I paid 40$ to be "featured" on the website. The site is all take take take and gives you absolutely nothing in return. Money grubbing, useless website. They should be ashamed.
sided with deadbeat client
A client of care.com ripped me off of a shift's worth of work. When I complained to the client and care.com, care.com's deadbeat client lied about me in a false review on their site. When I complained about being ripped off and lied about, care.com cancelled my account. Care.com stood by lying thieves instead of their caregiver. I'm sure it's because the lying, deadbeat client paid care.com and I had a free account. I am booked all the time through care.com's competitor. I checked with all my current, paying clients, and all of them found me through care.com's competition. I guess it's no loss, but what a horrible experience. I was ripped off, lied to, and care.com stood by the lying deadbeats and not their caregiver. I guess care.com should be called doesn'tcare.com, huh? Boo. Extremely negative experience. Stay away! Yuck!
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
Hi MollyB,
We're very sorry to hear about your experience with Care.com.
Care.com takes the safety and security of our site and our member community very seriously and, based on the Terms of Use that each member agrees to, reserves the right to remove access to the site for any reason or no reason, with or without notice. You are welcome to contact our Member Care team at any time to discuss your removal from the site.

Care.com Member Care Representative
whats the competitors name? just curious because we the people who have been scammed would like to know!
horrible customer service
I am a "premium member" on the site as a care giver which means I pay annual dues to the website to get job postings faster than the non paying members and I show up higher in search results to local families looking for help.
Everything was fine until I paid my annual dues a couple weeks ago but my background was not updated.
Not only was it not updated, but my social security number was suddenly coming up as "non verified" which makes me look like a liar I guess.
I tried to pay the $9 fee to update it... four times... and got a message each time saying that there was an error and it wouldn't work.
However, I did get charged $9 four times on my bank statement...for a service I never got.
Now families will not even respond to me once they see my background report because I don't look like a trustworthy person.
I've messaged the care.com 8 times now and still no response that is not completely automated.
I have filed a complaint with the better business bureau and will not be recommending the site to any more of my friends and family...I have gotten many people to join this site over the years and I am starting to regret sending them any business because when you're a paying customer and you need technical support...
THEY ARE NO WHERE TO BE FOUND WHEN YOU NEED THEM.
HANDS DOWN WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER NOT RECEIVED ANYWHERE FOR ANYTHING THAT I HAVE EVER PAID FOR.
Hi Ava Liese,
We are very sorry to hear about your experience. We can assure you that you have not been charged for those background check attempts. The charges you were seeing were pending charges and never went through. The reason you were receiving an error when you were trying to process a new background check is because the card was being declined.
Again, we apologize for any confusion, but we hope this helps.
Regards,
Care.com Membercare Representative
Hi Cocogrovemom,
We're sorry to hear about your experience with Care.com. As clearly stated on our upgrade page, as well as in section 8.2 of our terms of use that you agree to upon enrollment, all of our subscriptions automatically renew until cancelled. You can edit this setting at any point after upgrading by logging in to your account and going to your Account & Settings page, or by contacting our Member Care team via phone or email.
I hope this helps clear up any confusion regarding our billing policy!
Regards,
Care.com Member Care Representative
I tried their service and they continued to bill me. Total scam. I had to get amex involved to stop it. NEVER NEVER NEVER use care.com.
background checks
I paid for a background check when I started with care.com because they said I could get more clients. After a year they did another check and said that I had felonies. I called and spoke to the company that did the check. I gave them more information and came back clean. My problem with this is care.com said that when they receive this new information I would be reinstated. I didn't realize that I would have to do it myself. I was then unfairly
terminated from their site. They said it had to be done by a certain date. A few years ago there was and probably still isn't a contact phone number, everything had to go through e-mail. I wouldn't recommend this company to anyone. Go to your friends, neighbors, fb, or newspaper.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
I had the same issue. I had just signed up and was told I had a failed background check. I was terminated off of the site as well, indefinitely. What they don't realize is that I have a job and was looking for a sitter. I went through an extensive background check for that, and passed. I will not use Care.com to find a sitter, ever.
The same thing happened to me! I emailed them and got a response and we emailed back and forth forever to no avail. And recently I needed care for my dogs and they terminated me from their site. No reason...just did. I would not recommend them either.
termination for no reason
I have been with care.com for around a year now. I recently upgraded to a premium membership and things were going fine. Well yesterday I responded to a women who needed help with cleaning and organizing. She stated she was going through a divorce and needed someone who was non judgmental. I told her I would love to help her and I completely understood where she was coming from, being divorced myself. Today I got an email from care.com saying my services had been terminated...WHAT ? No explanation, no anything. I also recently had my background check done again, since it was about to expire. I had been with them for, like I said a year, and haven't done anything to worry about. I don't understand. Talk about a slap in the face ! As someone said earlier, I don't care about your policies. If I haven't done anything and I have been a good client, then why not give me an explanation ? What is there to hide ? Then to find out they will let people who I have corresponded with know of my termination ? What am I supposed to tell them, they just decided to dump me for no reason ? Please...give me a break, when did common courtesy go out the window. I will definitely be one of the ones contacting BBB and anyone else I can think of. If they can't have the decency to tell why they let me go, then they aren't decent enough to do business with ! And please no responses from care.com. If you couldn't tell me by now, I don't want to hear it ! There is no excuse for plain rudeness, policy or no policy !

Same thing happened to me while seeking care for my mother. I paid, communicated with several possible caregivers and then an email stating I was removed from their site. What the hell? When I tried to reach out to them I was told decision was irreversible and they could not tell me why. What a sorry excuse for a company not to mention the rude costumer care employees. I would not hire anyone affiliated with this company to care for my dog at this point.
This JUST happened to me! I did nothing wrong and now I can't get a new account with them! I attended a program where you couldn't work for 9 months so I'm looking for a job and I had several interviews set up. I am EXTREMELY upset about it! They did, however, refund my background check. I've noticed quite a few people are having this issue. I have a totally clean record and everything.
general... scam?
This is quite frustrating! Is this a scam if some sort? I taught at the college level nursing classes for 8 years...I applied for a position to someone who is looking for someone to help her with tutoring in her RN classes. I have a MSN in Nursing Education plus 30 years experience. To say I am not cleared for applying for this position is ridiculous and insulting. Please advise. Thank you.
Hi Jeanne,
We're sorry about any confusion with your applications.
I would first check that you have created a service profile that matches the job category. For example, if you are listed as a child care provider, you wouldn't be able to apply to a tutoring job. You can create as many service profiles as you want with the free basic membership.
A second reason might be that all profiles have to go through an approval process. There are a number of reasons why a profile might be rejected, and you would be notified if you're profile hadn't been approved. If this is the case, feel free to browse our FAQ page or contact our Member Care team to discuss specifics of your case.
I hope this helps, and best of luck in your job search!

unfair billing practice and refund policy
After being charged 7 months for premium service that I didn't use or need, because I forgot to downgrade to basic membership after my one month subscription was up for renewal, care.com offered only a partial refund and not a full refund. They were thus unjustly enriched because I received absolutely nothing in return for what I paid. Also, I never received a reminder email that my one month was up for renewal, nor did I receive any emails prior to my credit card being charged each month. Had I received a reminder email, I would've been alerted to the fact that I forgot to downgrade. Care.com, why do you not send out billing emails? So that you can take advantage of consumers who forget to downgrade after they no longer need your services? Shame on you, Care.com, and shame on me for not reviewing all the negative reviews about care.com before signing up.

Terrible company. We NEVER got anything out of their site. I followed their steps to downgrade and still have been billed about $400 total. We missed the billing on our account and of course they don't send you any billing notifications or this would have been found sooner. So although I downgraded to the free membership they still charged me. Fraudulent. I just called to talk to a manager and got put into a "queue" for their manager to call me back. Really? A queue? I guess I'm not surprised. There must be a lot of pissed off customers trying to get their money back. Gotta go call my bank now..
What can be done about this? I signed up for a 3 month trial at $56. Now, $500 and two years later, I notice I'm still being charged! The charges were being made ever 3 months, and while I check all my bills, I apparently had been missing this care.com charge, perhaps thinking it was a medical charge. Is there any recourse I can take?
BEWARE!... This site is steeling your money. If you don't track your credit card for each and every transaction and pay your monthly bills blindly then you are this company's target... They love customers like you. One day after months you will realize that you are paying for something you didn't even know you had signed up for. And yes no refund policy!
I had a similar experience. I'm from Canada and they are no more honest here.
They force you into a subscription that you did not agree to, and then send you out NO notifications that you are still being billed or that your expiration due date for the month is coming like most other honest companies.
They don't even make it easy to cancel, they just want to make your downgrade, even though they claim in the first payment notifications I got that 'it's easy to cancel, just click here'. NO such thing happened.
They didn't help me, nor did they refund all the money they stole. They designed their system in such a way to ensure maximum money gets stolen. Because customers forget and that's why they send no notifications out. And they don't let you cancel. And when you complain, they ban you like they did me. Just disgusting.
care.com is a scam
Please join my group, "Care.com is a Scam", if you have been ripped off by this company. What they do is get you to sign up for "free" membership. In order to access the contact info of caretakers you must upgrade to premium membership, for either a one-month, three-month, or twelve-month period. After the membership period you have selected is up, Care...

I signed up for a one month premium membership at Care.com, advertised to be $35/month. In fine print it states that your subscription will be renewed if you do not cancel your membership. There is actually no way to cancel your membership, you have to remember to downgrade to free basic membership (which is completely useless) otherwise your credit card will be charged without notice. 9 months later, I find out from my husband (who pays the bills) that there had been recurring charges on our credit card by Care.com. I called and explained my situation and Care.com was only wiling to refund up to 90 days, which is their policy. I could not find this supposed policy anywhere on their website. This company is so shady, buyer beware!

Hi Dani,
We're sorry to hear about your experience with Care.com, and about any confusions about how the service works. If you have an account, you are able to post a job anywhere in the US. The job will go out to people who are within the zip code of that job.
As stated in our terms of use, all prepaid background checks are non refundable. However, these background checks will never expire, and the credit for the background check will remain in your account until you choose to use it. Per our policy, all cases must be reviewed by a supervisor before a follow up.
All of our subscriptions set to automatically renew unless cancelled as clearly stated in our Terms of Use, and on the upgrade page when you had initially signed up. This is a setting you can change at any point in the Account and Settings section of your profile after upgrading.
We apologize again for your experience.
Best regards,

Hi Chloe,
We're sorry that you misunderstood our billing policy. As clearly stated on the upgrade page, as well is in our Terms of Use upon enrollment, all of our subscriptions automatically renew until cancelled. You can set the account to downgrade or cancel at any point after upgrading in the Account & Settings section of your profile, or by calling or emailing our Member Care Team.
Our refund policy, as clearly stated in Section 8.3 of our Terms of Use, states that we are only able to refund the most recent charge on any account, only if the Premium features have no been used, and the request for the refund is within 30 days. Ultimately, it is the member's responsibility to cancel the subscription when they are no longer in need of the service. Many of our members like the auto renew policy because it gives them full access to a community of caregivers, as well as access to our back up care feature, and our WePay feature. Additionally, we would not want to interrupt members in the middle of communications or the hiring process.
We again apologize for your experience, and hope that you were able to find the care you were looking for!
Best regards,

I called Care.com to ask if there was a way to post a job on a national forum, rather than the smaller local forum. The representative had to put me on hold to find the answer. I was taken back a little. Even the newest employee would know the answer to this question if the company was legitimate. I cancelled my membership when the representative returned to the phone. Unfortunately, my fears that the company was seedy were supported immediately. They refunded a portion of the payment that I found steep but was acceptable. However, they refused to return a prepaid background check. The representative also refused to let me speak with a manager. As I suspected, a standardized rejection email came that afternoon. I have called several times to be told that it is the policy of Care.com to never return any prepaid money, even if the corresponding membership is terminated. Care.com has not responded to my emails. Meanwhile, I read a previous customers’ commentary on the Better Business Bureau site that warned Care.com aggressively charged renewal fees after stopping membership online. She warned that Care.com requires a call before membership renewal would be stopped. I checked my online account, and although I had already called to stop renewal, it was still set to renew. A legitimate business does not treat their customers in this way. Now, I am compelled to call my credit card company to set a block against Care.com.
unauthorized billing
I am in the same situation as a previous posting. See below: The only difference is I was signed up longer and charged more money. I have already contacted the BBB and received a note back from care.com that they weren't going to do anything about it. I wonder how many others are being charged for access to a service that they no longer need and aren't...

Care.com is a wonderful tool to connect parents and like minded caregivers. In the past to hire a babysitter the parents had to post an ad in a newspaper or hire a teen from the local highschool. That was risky. Today all the tool are available to parents to narrow the search and make a sound judgement based on media, back ground checks that Care.com offers. Judicial search, local police records..If you hire a college student the parents will often have a high risk of no shows and a short term commitment. If you hire a middle aged person and dont do any leg work other than run a care.com background check (One check from any source is not enough) The info might not be correct or only partial information. The person should have at least a few personal references and at least a few professional references other than babysitting..and solid local, current babysitting references from working professional families. Not a pizza delivery driver or a gas station attendant. Google the parents that they worked for, look them up on facebook who are they? If you dont do the work you will get what you deserve a loser.
