I have a 2 year old Kenmore electric range model number 790 [protected]. The other morning we heard a LOUD boom only to go into the kitchen and find out the glass oven door had completely shattered and glass was all over the floor. The unit was cold and had not been used in over 24 hours. After making several phone calls to Sears and Kenmore, being disconnected after 45 minutes of being passed around, I was told Sears would have to come out and look at the unit. A few days later and 59.00 Sears informed me that they did not know why this happened but it would be 226.00 to fix. When I asked if it would occur again the serviceman did not know. I showed the repair man the spider cracks on the bottom of the oven and he said they were unrelated to the door breaking and that ALL self cleaning units have spider cracks due to the high heat used in cleaning. Since then I have looked at many self cleaning units in friends homes and none have cracked bottoms. So far no one will tell me why this occurred and take responsibility for what sounds like to me a defective unit. I am thankful my children were not standing in from of the unit when the glass exploded.

Yeah, this just happened to our range too (model 790.[protected]) also ~ 2 years old - off warranty, of course. Oven had not been used in a week or more. 11:30 p.m. we hear the same CRASH! Haven't talked to Sears yet, but my expectations are now appropriately low.

Hello, this happened to us also. It is a GE oven. We had not used the oven for 8 hours and it was cold.
Suddenly when mu son was near the oven it the front glass window exploded all of a sudden.
The oven was not in use, it was in room temparature and the glass shattered.
When we complained to GE they said it is common and they can't do anything about it. We have to pay $250 to fix it, they said.
Further my son was injured due this incident but luckily not serious.
Should we sue GE for this.
I find GE has a very bad reputation on handling such incidents and their quality has come down drastically.
I will avoid buying any GE products in the future but do not know what to do now? Help?

This just happened to my range tonight. I was coming in the laundry room door and actually SAW the front glass shatter without anyone near it. The oven was off, and cold, had not been used in days. I bought the house new in March and the oven came with the house, also new. When my wife called GE, the operator actually laughed a bit, and said they would be out in a week to fix it.

This is the most disconcerting problem I've ever heard. While in the upper level of our home. Without any warning, the glass oven door of our Kenmore Sears wall unit completely shattered. Glass traveled across the entire kitchen. To accomplish this, the force of the explosion had to be enormous. My kitchen is very large. My husband had to use the shop-vac to collect the shards of glass. What troubles me most is that this is not a singular event. Even if the problem only happens to 5% of ovens. Doesn't it make sense to investigate the cause of the problem before someone seriously gets hurt.

We are vacationing at my sister's condo in Naples and I was cooking soup on the front burner of a GE Spectra Stove (7 yrs old). I heard a loud noise from the oven area and the inside glass was shattered in hundreds of small pieces. Waiting to talk to GE about it today. After reading previous posts, doubt they will do anything. This sounds like a MAJOR LAWSUIT, expecially the posts where injuries occurred. Whatever happened to pride in workmanship instead of shoddy, overseas manufacturing? MD

Well, our oven just did the same thing...We bought a Kenmore oven (Item# [protected] | Model# 92903) 4 months ago and had no problems until last night when the glass door spontaneously shattered. My wife opened the oven door to take out a cooking tray, closed the door and few minutes later the front door glass literally blew apart sending glass all over the kitchen floor. The door wasn't slammed and nobody banged into it. After doing some online research (including finding this site), this isn't an uncommon problem. I would hope that Sears addresses this very serious and dangerous product concern with a recall. We've scheduled an appointment to have a Sears technician inspect next week. We'll see what happens. PS: Very odd...for some strange reason my "poor" post on the Sears site won't stick. JJ

Last night my son called me to say he was with his step-son in my kitchen and all of a sudden... crack... the glass on the door of my self cleaning oven explosed. At first I thought they must have been ruff housing and somehow "fell" into the oven door shattering the glass but he assured me neither of them were even near the stove. After reading the comments above, I see my oven is not the only one to spontaneously shatter. I'm so thankful my little grandson and my son was not hurt. Now I'm off to go oven shopping... I'm thinking I may stick with the old fashion, clean it yourself, model...

We just had the same thing happened to our GE. It was late morning and the oven had not been used since the night before. The inside glaas was shattered. The oven is about 5 years old and there was no obvious flaw in the glass. No physical damage had happed prior, or any extreme temperature changes. The only difference I have noticed about the previous post is that ours is not a self cleaning oven. This is an extremely dangerous issue that these companies need to address.

The same thing happened to the outside glass on our Kenmore oven tonight. My husband was cooking on top front burner, the oven was off, and it shattered all over the place. Ours is a self cleaning oven. The pieces of glass were jumping off the tile floor like mexican jumping beans! What a weird sight! Luckily, my husband did not get hurt and he used the shop vac to clean it up.

We just had the same thing happen. Ours is a GE wall oven. My ex-husband (different story) pre-heated the oven to 350. He went to open it and it exploded all over the kitchen; as another user complained some of the pieces shattered some 8 feet from the oven. My grandson was standing there and just luckily he did not get cut. Reading the many complaints about this issue I am getting very frustrated and anxious that nothing has been done about this and the manufacturers have gotten away with selling such a defective and dangerous item. Why haven't they been forced to be sure the glass does not shatter-the older model ovens never had an issued like this so obviously these manufacturers are either using a cheaper product or a defective one. I am going to call Sears where I purchased it to see what they have to say; of course, it is a year out of warranty but there should be some type of resolve that doesn't include me coming out of pocket. This is not an ordinary repair or wear and tear issue this is dangerous and defective and GE or Sears should take responsibility.. I will let you know how it turns out.

Well, hate to sound like a broken record but the same thing just happened to our oven. My wife walked into the kitchen to start dinner opened a cabinet door and the front glass of our oven shattered and blew glass all over the kitchen floor. Fortunately she was wearing sandals but unfortunately did get some glass residue in her sandal. Thank goodness we don't have small children anymore. Our oven is a GE and came with the house. It is 10 yrs old. Regardless of age, a glass should not shatter or explode and should be considered a manufactures defect. I understand how mfg want to cut cost to reduce prices for the consumer but they also understand that quality and safety cannot be compromised. I am going to call GE but really don't expect them to do anything about it except take a note.

This just happened to us on the 3rd of Feb.2013. The outside glass Just exploded . My first thought was to get my 5 Dogs & 2 Cats to a safe place . Needless to say I was shocked. We are in Canada & the stove is only 2 yrs old . The handle on the door attaches thru 2 holes in the front glass panel. They think the handle was getting loose & the movement is what shattered the glass. How Safe is That Setup. I had extended insurance so they ordered me a new front glass . WELL --- that went well --- after I picked pieces of glass out of everything for a month the repairmen comes, has the door on the Kitchen table, screws on the new front & it SHATTERED ALL OVER AGAIN. ! I wanted them to order in a new front with a bracket protecting the glass from the handle but they said I would have to pay for that myself. $300 maybe ! The store was pathetic & cried about the cost of being an independent agent for Sears. They can't afford to do extra or it comes out of their pocket not Sears. I'll never buy another stove from them . What if this happens when we're out ? Now I will have to put a large bath towel over the front of my range for safety when the new glass arrives . GRRRRRRR

What the hell is going on with these stoves? I was standing in my kitchen with my back towards the stove, when BOOM! Glass all over my kitchen floor. My Kenmore Self Cleaning Double Oven, bottom door just shattered. And like so many of you, I've had the stove for 2 years, and it is now out of warranty. Is that perfect timing, or what? And what's the use in replacing the glass when what, in two years this will happens again? Who has money just to give again like that? I know I don't. NO SEARS! I don't want a new glass, I WANT A NEW STOVE! You can keep your SELF CLEANING PIECE OF CRAP. It's not worth the taxes I paid, let alone, the price. And believe me, I WILL pass the word to EVERYONE I KNOW about this. I am waiting for 9:30a, and I will be the first call that goes through on their switchboard. I will post the results from my call. I totally agree with the LAW SUIT comment.

Yesterday I preheated the oven to 325, reached for the handle to open the oven and the front glass shattered. The oven is just over 2 years old, the extended warranty was expired. Sears wants $75 to come out and give an estimate to repair the door. Model #92803.

My Sears Kenmore model [protected] front oven door just "exploded" at 11:00 p.m. It had not been on for about 4 hours. What a frightening event. Thank goodness no one was hurt. Sears should replace these or take them off the market. Our model is 3 years old. We paid to have the glass replaced, but how long will this one last? Nonsense!

Model # 7909745 Oven glass exploded also. Found this website searching for the top. Scared us all to death. Gladd hit my 12 year old son's legs and made a few minor cuts. Very frightening. Was glad our pet was not standing in front of the oven. Calling Sears tomorrow. Not expecting much given these responses, but on principle I'm letting them know I'll never buy one. Came with the house only a couple of years old. Would love to buy an oven with no window period.

This just happened to us for the 2nd time. First time we waiting a long time for Sears to fix the door. They sent the wrong door and we had to wait longer. Now tonight it shattered again while I was making dinner. Glass all over the inside of the oven. This is so dangerous and it is very upsetting to see reports of this dating back to 2011. Why hasn't there been a recall and why hasn't Sears and GE developed new doors that don't shatter. So thankful that no one was hurt. Having read these reports and reports on other websites I am not optimistic about Sears being very responsive to our problem.

My 13 year-old son called me at work this afternoon, upset and terrified that our oven glass just shattered! The oven was cold, and hasn't been used in two days. He was just sitting there and heard a loud bang, and saw that it was the oven glass. At first I couldn't believe that this could happen on it's own, but after googling "my oven glass just shattered", this was the first site to pop up! Are you kidding me?! We have a 3 year-old Kenmore glass top, electric range (not sure the model, because I'm not home) - How does the glass just break? I have called Sears, and they will send a repairmain in 6(!) days, but I don't feel that this is your normal repair-past-the-warranty-date, that I should have to cover!

This evening our Sears induction range oven door spontaneously shattered. The oven had not been used for weeks, only the cooktop. My wife was cleaning the cooktop and had just opened the oven door just enough to wipe the top edge.

My glass oven door shattered this past weekend. Sears Kenmore induction stove. Scared me to death. While trying to get away, I hurt my leg. I cannot believe how prevalent this problem is! Why is this continuing to happen to others? If Sears (and others) don't rectify the situation, there will be a serious injury. Millions of pieces of glass were everywhere.
