We usually go to this store because it is the nearest to our home. On saturday, march 26, around 3:00 pm my friend"s brother (Who attends to college) my friend and I (Which we're freshmens) were defetly mistreated on this store. We entered looking for some birthday products we needed, however since her brother is a guy and gets bored really easyly, he began...
Read full review of Dollar General and 1 commentno breaks for working sometimes open to close and more than 8 hours
I am a former employee for this company and while working there just over 2 years, I can count on the both hands the number of lunch breaks I was able to take. I started there as a 3rd Key holder and worked up to assistant manager. I started working for them in Vestal, New York. Worked in a few location there, before relocating to Cleveland, Ohio, where I transfered to. In all locations, I either did not get to take any kind of break, or was told, if you have to do something, punch back in, take care of the problem, and punch back out. From what I know of the federal law, it states, at least a 30 minute UNINTERRUPTED break. I even sometimes worked open to close shifts, because none of the other Managers would come in to let me leave or to take a break even. I would like to know if there is a lawyer that would take this on as a case, because I know it is still happening within this company. Is there a lawyer or does anyone know of a lawyer? I have copies of most of my scheduals from the Ohio store for proof of hours worked for the 7 months I worked there before leaving.
customer service
Hibe priorly had problems at this particular store and there was one lady who acted and voiced that I was a thief. Which by the was I am not and was not at that time and haven't been for years. Which is why it aggravated me so. Anyway I tried to speak with another lady about it and was rude and would nou hear me out and almost a year later at the same store I was shopping only to hear yelling about thats why they have carts and don't do it again so I figured it was an associate yelling at another associate and when I said it's not polite to yell in front of customers I was all the way at the back of the store btw she said she wasn't she was yelling at her and pointed at another customer! And for what? Placing the items on the counter to purchase them and at the last minute ran to get a candy bar! I couldn't believe it so I voiced that that is no way to treat a customer to insure they come back. The woman says you've said that before and here you are and I looked and it was the same two women as last year! What do I do

i found out an item in your ad is a miss print and would like to know if i can still get it at this price it is the everpet cat litter lb. size on page 5 i called the store and they told me it is a misprint thak you.
Mine is NOT a complaint about a Dollar General Store. It is about the District Manager for Livonia, Michigan. He is an arrogant, nasty, little man who really does has a little man complex. No matter what day or time of day I may shop at Store No. 08139 this 'little man' seems to be there. He Directs/Demands the staff (which is absurdly small - 2 at the most at any time) to move stock, re-arrange while customers are in the store. I have never seen him step in to help just criticize and as stated Direct. When I held a manager's position, it was not to direct, but to address issues and lend a helping hand. This guy really needs to go. As well as this store desperately needs to be allowed to hire additional staff. The staff now is wonderful but very overworked and I can imagine they are only being paid minimum wage for their efforts.
excused me of using fake coupons
I demand an apology. I emailed dollar general directly about how I was treated by the staff and management on friday, march 4, 2011 and recieved a confirmation of receipt at 7:47am stating that if my email required a reply they would be contacting me shortly. Well shortly is not 5 days later and still no reponse. The staff and management of store #02558...

I purchased a large box of Clover Valley Bite Size Frosted Mini Wheats Cereal on Feb. 21, 2011 at Store 00366. On February 23, 2011 around 6:30 am, I poured my 1st bowl of cereal from that box. Every time I go in and get ready to check out there is no one at the counter. I have to wait for at least 5 minutes for someone to come up. Today there was myself and two other customers in line and when I finally said hello, here she comes with an attitude and a ipod in her ear. What is that? Then she just pushes the money in my hand and on to the next customer. What happen to "thank you have a nice day"? This is an everyday thing.
Interesting customer "service" I encountered today. I'm a retail manager by trade and have managed a small box store in the past. This company hands down has got to be the worst in the industy. For example, on 4/21 I went in to purchase some weed killer. I had never ventured into this establishment before and thought, "why not". I found a few interesting things while perusing for my purchase. One, there's clutter all over the place making weaving through the small aisles next to impossible at times (and it wasn't even busy). Two, their freight door was wide open in the back and no person "manning" the door (what, free for all?). Three, I could not find what I was looking for so I asked the only person with a yellow Dollar General shirt for assistance. "Excuse me, do you carry weed killer." The response..."I'm not sure that we do." Huh? Some acceptable responses might have been, "no, sorry we don't have those products, but we do have..." or "I'll be with you in a minute to help you"...or "I'll get someone to help." I felt like I did not matter to them (what's that also say about their "Management"). See ya, Dollar General, you could have gained a lifelong customer, oh well, you probably think, so what, we are too big to fail and let one lost customer get in the way...I say...GUESS AGAIN! I will let other people know how you operate. Actually, I should be thanking Dollar General, this experience reinforces the fact that the great customer service my store provides is kinda tough to come by these days!
A joke, toots, a joke... I don't see any four letter words, do you?
Besides, you set yourself up for that one.
And I notice that you did not answer; did it give you something to contemplate, perchance?
If you refuse to put up with a--holes all day, HOW CAN YOU STAND LIVING WITH YOURSELF?
I work in a department store. I understand your position, as a customer, but try to see it from the other side. I cannot tell you how many times I have gotten attitude from customers, who think I am not doing my job because I am not standing behind the register like some mannequin. My store doesn't have a bell to ring, but most dollar stores I've been in do. This is for a reason. Ring the bell. The associate likely has no idea you are even standing there, because they are 50 feet away behind a shelf, WORKING! She shouldn't have pushed money into your hand, but these people are very stressed so if she failed to say "Have a Nice Day" get over it.
seriously. maybe the employee was new? maybe it was their first day and they werent completely familiar with the store yet. And weed killer is a seasonal item which means that the stores do not have a 'home' location for the product, things are always moving and for someone new it can be difficult to find things. I would say that this employee could have found someone else to ask, but in a store like dollar general often times there are only one or two employees in the store at any given time, which means that everyone is extremely busy. its not right, and i think that the company should give the stores more hours to keep the days better staffed, but thats the way it is and it isnt the employees fault. pull the stick out of your butt
i wirk for dollar general and yes i do answer that im not sure that we have it but i always look and try to find it .. may be you shouldnt judge people by their answers, may be he did care maybe he couldnt give a **** less but dont go all holier than thou customer service on people im sure you dont deal with as much **** as we do so all you have time for is kissin peoples ###. smart ###
fired
My name is Chris Wittkamp. First off, I thought that you needed to have three write ups to get fired, but the district manager fired me with technically only one write up (I have yet to see the second). So now they will not listen to me at all. I asked constantly to be transfered or to get more hours, and they kept refusing me. Also call the old manager of the Delphos store, Catherine, about how the new manager got her job since it goes around corporate policy. I was told in secrecy by the new manager about that.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
my name is pat maikowski i started working for dollar general in november 2010. i did a good job and was told i did a good job by my manager scott. i had a family emergency in march and needed time off which was fine. when i came back to work i had a customer who said that she wanted to pay for her stuff with her credit card . i rang up her stuff but i put it in as cash by mistake. at the end of the night my drawer came 90.00 short. i was fired i think i should have at least had a verbal warning.
first off it depends on the nature of the offense. a lot of things are a one time offense termination. money shortages, harassment, threatening harm to person or property, etc.
YES I AGREE WITH THE OTHERS SO WHAT HAPPENED WAS YOU GAVE AWAY 90 DOLLARS WORTH OF STUFF AND YOUR DRAWER WAS SHORT AND WHEN IT IS MORE THAN 50 DOLLARS OVER ARE SHORT IT IS GROUNDS FOR TERMINATION THERE IS NO WARNINGS
mistakes like that could happen, but you should of called your mananger for that.
out-of-date products
Appr. 2 mos. ago I purchased my usual Clover Valley Diet Colas. When I opened the first one I noticed it was very flat-tasting. I looked at the expiration date and was horrified to see that it had expired in 2010!
Again this past Friday I purchased another case of the same diet colas. I didn't think to look at the date becasuse I was in a hurry. AGAIN I was disappointed. The expiration date was MAY, 2010!
Needless to say, I won't buy any more. I could not take them back since I don't have a car. I wasn't wasting anyone elses time and gas/
rude associate
To whom this may concern my name is tasha jones and on 1/25/11 I went into the dollar general in lynn haven fla. Store
07141. Im alway sat this location and mind you I spend a lot of money in this store. Im a single parent so it helps me out alot with the location of the store, well after I gathered all of my groceries the young cashire advised me that his ebt machine had stopped working, so he ask me to to go to the next cashier which was an older gentlmen, so he rung up the lady that was behind me to make sure his ebt machine worked and it did, so I proceeded to put my groceries on the table to be rung up, he rudely told me that I would have to wait and began ringing up all the people that were behind me, he made me stand there for 45min before he rung up my groceries and the only reason I stayed because I needed to get the things that I had for my daughter. This was very unacceptable behavior from the male associate and I am a loyal customer to the dollar general store in lynn haven fla. So I would appreciate a call or somthing from somone in upper mgt or coporate because I know this behavior is not acceptable and I know the company would not tollerate associates being rude to the customers. My name is tasha jones and my contact number is [protected]. Please call me with sme feedback it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and have a great day

poor managment
I have noticed that the manager of the store is never there. It is always the assistant and the third key working. I asked an employee about this one time and the informed me that the manger is supposed to be there 40 hrs a weeks because she gets paid salary, that she puts herself on the schedule and never works those hours in fact there are times when she...

Thanksgiving morning at approximately 7:02 am I entered into this store and ask the cashier where were the digitial cameras and she told me that she had phone calls the night before and had put all the camera on the side in the warehouse for those call in customers and co-workers. I worked retail before and I know that the workers are not allowed to do that, Okay I was in the line after purchasing cleaning supplies and the ladies came up to the register and ask for their cameras and the other cashier was told to go and get the cameras for them and it was 6 of te cameras. The other customers fussed with the ladies but those cashiers at this store did the same thing last year and I didn't get the camera. The address of this store is 2019 N.Parkerson Ave., Crowley, La.

Regardless the actions, I will go ahead and tell you, the employee did you a service. Dollar General has always sold crap digital cameras.
"I worked retail before and I know that the workers are not allowed to do that" So you have worked every single retail job ever? Because not all stores have the same policies.
accused/threatened
I walked into a local DG to be welcomed by a new young employee. I headed to the back looking to see if they had any Hot Wheels for their two for one Thanksgiving sale. When I turned around this employee told me I had to leave. I asked why, and he told me they have me on camera going into the back and stealing a cell phone. I couldn't believe this because it is absolutely not true and I become offended when accused of something I did not do. I looked him in the face and claimed to be innocent and that if he really had me on video to call the cops which I'm pretty sure he did not do. I left the store and he smirked in a way that gave me the feeling that he was the one who might have stolen this cell phone, apparently from a worker out of the back room. Now I should be honest here. I regularly stop in this store and check for new Hot Wheels. I also sometimes pop my head into the back room to see if I spot any cases on the carts. However, I have NEVER nor would I EVER steal anything. I'm upset over the accusation that I would be robbing a dollar store. I am a college educated professional and am personally offended. I am considering my options about complaining but, after finding this forum and reading the horror stories from former employees, I think it might be best to not give Dollar General my hard earned dollar instead.
I'm telling you I didn't steal. I wouldn't be trying to clear my name if I did. Just like td577 says, who would steal a cell phone? If you stole one, it would just get disconnected then if you went to get it connected you would most likely get busted for trying to activate a stolen phone. I have a cell phone and I don't need someone else's.
You are obviously missing the point of being accused of stealing something that I did not steal. Actually that employee was probably covering his own ###. His smirk when I left gave me the impression that he was the thief.
Wow what great advice. How about I just spend my money where it is welcomed?
Claims to have video but, refused to show me it. You would think if they had video the cops would be there.
He was standing with the manager when the employee welcomed me. I think after he welcomed me the manager sent him to me.

i was in dollar general shopping and someone did steal they confronted him while me my daughter were shopping i was ticked off about it he stole gain laundry soap and they put me my daughter and grandson and who ever was in the store at risk of possibly being hurt or shot all over a 5 dollar item omg NOW THat is stupid in my opinion Now I am hearing from you they accused you of stealing and having it on taped and you say you didn't do it I would have called the cops myself and demanded they showed you the tape
I would call the Customer Service # on your reciept, they r suppose to folow-up on ALL calls...If nothing else turn them into your local Better Business Bureau...I work @ DG in Hastings, NE and we ALWAYS make it right with our customers there. There should be NO questions asked as to why u r returning it, especially if it does not work.
As a manager of Dollar General, , I agree with those who say not to be in the back room. What makes you think that you have the right to step foot back there? And further more, , putting yourself in a place where you know you shouldn't be tells me that you obviously don't always do what's right. So who's to say that you didn't steal the phone? I'm not saying that you did because I wasn't there, but if you put yourself in a position to be suspected then don't complain when someone does suspect you. It's that simple.. From now on, don't go into places that you know you don't belong. That's just common sense.
Wow. I think everyone is missing the point. Sure, it's not right to look in the back room, but the point is that he was framed and asked to leave the store for something he didn't do. Why is everyone making such a big deal about this? That employee needs to be fired.
inoperative debit card machine
Tried three times to pay with a debit card. Refused card contendin I had no balance. I had a balance of over $3500.00.
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
In addition to the comment saying that the equipment is junk, the equipment also tends to have two or three generic messages it gives for why it won't take a card. And there have been several times that it was on the bank's end. You would cry if you knew how often banks cover up hacking incidents and computer glitches.
It very well could have been the DG machines. Our machines are junk, and we have daily issues. I spend about an hour a day on the phone with ERC trying to fix all of our computer issues. They never send anyone physically to the store. They just make us shut the machines down while they send new updates. I'm sorry, but these updates are obviously not helping. The computer have to be from the early nineties, first off. They can't handle all of the updates and ADs that get sent to them.. the computer constantly freeze in the middle of transactions, the other day the EBT Food option conpletely disappeared from our pinpads.
I don't disagree with you that it could have been our machines, but you have to understand that it isn't our fault. We, at least my team, does what we can to fix the problems on a daily basis, but nothing ever gets done, because DG is far too cheap to actually put forth the money to take care of the problem.
I am pretty sure the problem was still on your end. When credit card systems are not working, they display different messages than the typical "declined." Do you have a daily limit, perhaps?
rude... no customer service
On Nov. 7th I purchases 4 items from this store...Amount paid $15.58 for items. Day or two later tried to return the pet bed for $5.00. The sales person said could not return until check cleared. So I went back to store on Nov. 17th to return the pet bed. The person who was at register this time was Richie...think he suppose to be manager or assistant...

I worked for Dollar General for 3 1/2 years. I was one of the only people who would work extra to replace a person who was in need. I am disabled as known by the manager the reasons of disability. The manager named Dale...fired for calling in sick. I worked very sick the days before, until I became too weak to work. I called in the second day of illness and was told that if I did not come in, I would be fired because she (the manager) did not have any one to come in and work with her that night. Needless to say, I was fired, longest working employee at that store... At that store I was the only male. The new female hirees some would work a day or week and not show up or call in...She hired one that worked a short time and never called in but would not fire her until after the 3rd day of calling in. She had one female employee that took a 2 week sick leave right before I was fired. The reason for the sick leave...Boob job! When the manager was being questioned about her use of obscenities at the customers, my brother told me to lie for her, due to the fact she had a heart trouble.Well you can see how she paid me back, fired me for following the rules, simply because she did not like my disability. Dollar General is without a doubt a very poor job choice. I take pride in my work, but the some of the managers could care less. I have turned this over to the EEOC and to my Attorney who works for Dallas Hospice. I worked for 3 managers at this store, and Dale was #3. I was done dirty, but intend to pursue this case, maybe some in Dollar General Main Office will wake up to what goes on in thier stores if they care, If not they deserve a state of constant litigation. The attorney said I could get my job back, but who would want to work for these people? I do have witness to what I have said working at and some that have quit the store, I can back up everything I have said.

On 11/11/10 I was suspended wrongfully by my dm didnt tell me how long or anything I have been with dollar general for 5 year they dont support their empolee treat people like dirt they want you do do all this work and pay you pennis. I have call my dm twice to ask about my suspended she has not call me back. Didnt think she would because they never bring people back.

Have you complained to the Labor Dept. employee at your local state employment agency about your treatment? I had an employer whose HR person fired me without his permission when he was in the hospital. I went to the state employment agency and sent a letter to the unemployment appeals board explaining the circumstances of the firing and the duties I performed at the company. I asked the appeals board to okay unemployment benefits for me even though I was fired. They did.
If you have to put on an employment application for a new job that you were fired without cause from the last one, you can add statements like the one above to explain your firing.
While you seem to have a somewhat legitimate complaint, I would suggest you forget Dollar General and go back to school to learn better skills, including writing proper English, which I assume is your native language? Your writing shows limited education, and employers tend to think that if you can't express yourself properly, you are unintelligent or lower class, although that may not be the case at all.
If you need to finish high school, please do. If you need a GED, get one. If you then are ready to go to college and learn some skills that could get you a REALl career, not just a job, you can probably qualify for financial aid in the form of grants, scholarships or loans.
The most important thing, ladies of Dollar General, is not to let companies like this take advantage of you just because you are women. You are worth more than that! And never, never, never give up! If you need help to get ahead, don't be ashamed to keep asking until you get it.
God bless you.
false advertising
The dollar general sale ad comes in the sunday paper they offer trac fones for $5.00 not one store I called in the state of indiana have them its just a scam to get you in the store so you will buy something else when they dont have what you came for to bad for them i wont be back and plan to tell everyone i know this is what happens when greed gets the best of you we also called an 800# for help but for some reason they couldnt name me one store that had the phone sounds a little funny to me just the same old run around DG is full of BS !

They only send us a case usually for the double minutes your talking about. We sold out within 2 days. All of our Thanksgiving day electronics where gone in the first 5 min of me opening my store.
terminated
Im a store manager... Im currently under suspension pending investigation... It was said in our last meeting that they are firing anybody and everybody for anything and everything... Ok I will admit I did have someone in my store that wasnt a dg employee helping me. My dm told me to do what I had to do to get the job done, no other stores had extra people to lend, no good apps, and I was running 200-300 under payroll a week what a waste! Any store manager would agree, ya'll would die for that right? Anyways, there was nothing stolen from the store, I have camaras to prove that, during the conversation with lp, wait I failed to mention my dm had "quit" 2 days prior, who knows what really happened, ok... Lp... He stated to me and I quote "so if I contact"dms name"and remember I still have his number, he will tell me he said it was ok for you to work a non-dg employee?" I said "no, he told me to do what I had to do to get the job done" so I did.. Yes its 110% against policy but either way if my store wasnt done I was losing my job, and if I got caught working the nondg-employee I was losing my job. However, with the statement he made, contacting my former dm, means he would be discussing dg with a non-dg employee? Hmmmmmm 2 wrongs dont make a right... Our region is well I dont know how to explain it, but I will say when you have around 9 dms w / the rm, also around 150 employees cleaning up 7 stores in a 48 hr time frame for a kathleen visit, lets just put it out... Would it be safe to say renting uhaul trucks and putting rolltainers full of product in them, taking them to a disclosed location for 24-48 hrs (Until kathleen was back home) without a outgoing transfer against policy? That could fall under employee theft, it was removed from stores by dms w / rms permission... Ok so it was brought back... I saw it leave, but never saw it return... So I will lose my job for struggling in a store that cant keep a manager... I run a perfect store before I agreed to take this one... Never any problems (After I got it model) I was one of the lucky ones... And dms and rm will keep their... I see a problem w / this... Not to mention that lp went outside and yelled at one of my employees she wasnt even clocked in... I just dont get it guys...
Update*since I first posted this... I was fired for stuff the rm and dms allowed also... And now im finding out that the manager previous to me was making 2, 000 more per year than what I was... He was only with the company 6 months...
Id fire myself to! Of course I truely believe that laws of this nature really need to be taught to all...I never heard of this law until the day i was suspended...i didnt even know about that labor poster until I stumbled on it on a website...DG please train managers BETTER is all im asking
Yes I understand that NOW...i admitted to it all...as you could see, i apparently learned to do it from someone...they need to practice what they preach...I know of 4 other stores in the district that are doing the same thing right now today...
The complaint has been investigated and resolved to the customer’s satisfaction.
district manager
I was working for them part-time to help with finances due to my husband losing his job and after finding another was much lower in pay.
I honestly can say I have never heard such rules and stipulations in the workplace.
Cell phones I understand, uniforms/clothes specifications ok no big deal, but... No employee is allowed to buy any! Product after 6pm, to take home. Period. Why? If u keep sales recpt and manager cks you out. Why do the employees have to go elsewhere to buy products that is sold right there? Nobody knows if family calls and needs bread, medicine etc after 6pm. Also there is no! Support from district managers to their staff. Yes I understand the customer is right but, , , , not all the time. There is a line there and they should take up for us to some extent if it is crossed. I watched an incident, we wont go into here, and confronted the person, after that is was chaos! I was never talked to by dist. Manager for my side only asked for written report... He watches camara ok fine, nobody should have to take the abuse I took and stand there quietly, then to have the person say they are not going to stop until they have my job! Well congratulations you got it! But by my choice. There is no employer/employee connection at all. The employees are robots, not humans. Watch cash register but stock shelfs, dont make customers wait, but dont stand and do nothing, come on... There is no mirrors, or bells for customers to ring but I guess we are to have esp or something to know when someone is at cash register. And show no emotions when your being attacked for doing your job. Oh and if you are a cashier you better check with your immediate supervisor to make sure what you can and can't do. Because if you witness something suspicious you better just ignore it because your not allowed to acknowledge it, because your cashier... Don't know how they expect to win cases in court without eyewitness but they know best huh?... Sorry for sounding off but what is happening to our world today. Our we so greedy that we want to get what we want no matter who it hurts or destroys... As in my case, makes it harder to live, because you do not qualify for any state/county assistance. Hope your satisfied lady. God bless you and yours, because I know he has me. Thank you for a blessing in disguise. What you intended as harm as been a gift to me. Have a great day. Jp 10-07-2010
